Author's Note: After playing the mission where Mary dies in prison, I just knew I had to write a Kiddway Ship on them both where Mary's baby and pregnancy is caused by Edward. In the game it is never explicitly mentioned who the Father of her child is, but in my head it's Edward after he finds out about her identity as a woman. Anyway hope you enjoy the alternate version of events!
Edward was sitting by the gallows on a wooden bench, watching the sentencing and hanging of other pirates - before it would be his turn, all the while being harassed by Governor Rogers behind him
"Edward James Kenway, born to an English Father and a Welsh Mother. Fancy seeing you here" He cooed as Edward rolled his eyes
"Married at 18, to Caroline Scott Kenway." He continued with the taunts
Edward, fed up with his games, snapped at Rogers. "I swear if you lay a finger on her..." he trailed off
"Oh? Didn't you know? She's sick and dying these days anyway" he laughed
Edward frowned at him, before two women approaching the gallows and the court got his attention.
On the left was a redhead, and on the right was a familiar face that Edward had known for a good while.
Anne and Mary?! What are they doing here? Last I saw, Anne was just a barmaid at Nassau and Mary was with the assassins, well except for that night at Great Inagua. A night that I want to forget.
Before he could dwell any longer , a man with red hair obviously the Judge spoke up with a posh accent disturbing his train of thought.
"We are here today for the sentencing of Anne Bonny and Mary Read for the crimes of piracy. The crime being is that they took on seven boats, all fishing merchants and robbed them on the high seas"
He stopped to look at the two women, who just continued to smirk in front of everyone not having a care in the world.
What's up with Mary? Why does she look so happy and amused when they're going to hang her soon? Edward thought with confusion
"And for this they shall be hanged, as with any other pirate" He was about to bang the hammer on the table and dismiss the case, until Anne stopped him in his tracks
"We're pregnant!" She screamed out suddenly, much to the shock of the crowd, including Edward
Pregnant?! That's what that vision I saw at the observatory was about. Must be Rackham's baby the two were in a relationship. But what about Mary? Who made her pregnant or is she making that up?
Then he remembered with a shudder and dread. Oh no. Please don't tell me that drunken night in Great Inagua. Don't tell me that's my Kid and I'm the Father. No other man knows about her secret. They all think she's Kidd. I hope she's making it up...
At that moment Mary spoke up interrupting Edward's thoughts once again.
"Aye. British Law says you can't hang women who are with Child" She added in smirking at their faces
No wonder they were so calm about being sent to the gallows. They knew. Edward thought
"Sir. She's right. British Law does forbid Women with Child to be hanged" A advisor added in to the Judge
"If what you say is true and that you both are quick with child, then your sentences will be dismissed. You will serve your terms in prison. Take them away" he ordered the guards slamming the hammer once more
Edward watched on, as the two women were led astray to the prison.
"Now your turn. Since you didn't tell me where the Observatory was, it's your turn for prison" Rogers snapped behind Edward, tugging his arm and pulling him away from the gallows
Hours later, Edward was trapped in a gibbet as punishment for not telling Rogers where the observatory was, until Ah Tabai came to him and rescued him on the condition he help find Mary and Anne and break the two women out of prison, one Edward happily obliged to.
As he jumped out the gibbet, Edward's head and heart pounded with excitement.
I can't wait to see Mary again and catch up with her. It's been too long, I also want to find out if that kid is mine. Or if it's another man's. Guess I won't know till I talk to her again.
He infiltrated the prison grounds as fast as he could, moving from bush to bush stealthily taking out the guards without raising the alarm.
Edward had reached the prison and was nearly at Mary and Anne's cell when he heard a conversation that enraged him.
He could hear Anne's voice calling for help.
"Guards help! My friend here is sick and she just had a baby and needs food care and treatment. Help a woman out here!"
The guard snickered and laughed at Anne and Mary as Edward watched on behind cover, observing the situation
"Shut your gob. Before I go in there and shut it for you!" he barked threatening Anne
"So that's it then? You're just going to leave a pregnant woman to die here and a woman who's just had a child. Shows how low you are!" She shouted angrily at them
"Yes, not just any woman. Pirates. You deserve to die here, even better if she dies in Childbirth. One fewer menace in this world" He said referring to Mary.
That was the turning point for Edward. He couldn't just sit back and let them talk about Mary like that.
How dare you talk about Mary like that and possibly my child. I'll shut your gob for you.
He marched up angrily, hidden blades at the ready - and stabbed both of the guards. Anne looked up at him in surprise and shock
"Edward!" She hardly rasped out.
Edward unlocked the door, using the key he stole from one of the dead guards and freed Anne.
"Can you walk Anne? If you can get to the boat. Ah Tabai is waiting for you there he sent me in to rescue you and Mary"
"I can. Just get Mary out quickly will ya?" She replied springing into action
"Will do, see you on the boat Anne" Edward said as Anne scurried away quickly towards the boat.
"Mary. Mary it's me" Edward said, shaking Mary
A weak Mary rasped "Edward. Didn't expect to see you here, and didn't think you would care either"
Edward was taken aback from what she said, before he quickly regained his composure and held his hand towards her, pulling her up so she could stand
Get out of here first, then ask questions later. His head reminded him, springing into action.
"Of Course I care about you, Mary. Let's go. Lean onto my shoulder here" he said instructing her
Mary weakly compiled, clutching her stomach and leaning onto Edward for support as they slowly navigated the prison's corridor trying to find a quick exit.
She stopped catching her breath and coughing. Edward turned around and faced her with concern
"Are you alright?" he asked
Mary leaned onto the wall, to stop herself from falling before she nearly fell and Edward managed to catch her with his hands just before she collapsed
"It's alright Mary. I got you" Edward reassured her
"Just give up on me, Kenway. I'm holding you down and slowing you down. Just leave me here. I'm weak and not as strong as I used to be. Just give up already" She scolded him, using all the strength she could muster up.
Edward placed her down, sighing as Mary weakly sat on the floor leaning against the wall.
"I heard a rumour. I heard a rumour that when they captured you, you and Anne - the pair of you fought to the last second until you both couldn't anymore. Against a dozen men from the navy. At first I was in disbelief, then I realised that it could be true, the great Mary Read against a dozen soldiers, fighting to the very end not giving in to anyone- like the Mary and Kidd I knew. You're a fighter, Mary. We can get through this, but I am not leaving you now" Edward said determinedly
Mary weakly smiled and chuckled. "Aye that is true, but not anymore. They took my baby away - our baby actually, our daughter. That baby was yours, Kenway, I'm a lost cause Edward now I'm sick and dying"
Edward was lost for words, he couldn't quite believe it. What he heard. So that was our child, she wasn't faking it. She really was pregnant, by me.
Once he had regained himself over the mental shock, he spoke.
"All the more reason to fight back and live. We can find our daughter, We can get her back. Find some normalcy in this madness. Don't you think your daughter needs her Mother?" Edward tried to persuade and reason with Mary to no avail
"You can, Edward. I'll always be there watching you in spirit. Go and get her Edward, you can still be a good Father, I know you have some heart down there" Mary weakly rasped giving up
Edward looked around desperately, panicking as he knew time was running out, for Mary and for him both - they had to move. If they didn't move now, there would be no chance for them both.
"No Mary, We can. We'll get through this, Like we always have" Edward said in one last desperate attempt to persuade her to join him
Mary slumped her head down, groaning once more.
"Mary?" Edward asked gently at first. Then more frantic, as he shook her desperately once more. "Mary, wake up! I can't lose you now! MARY!"
It was too late, Mary had passed out and died.
Gulping back tears, Edward knew he had to move as he heard several voices down the corridor of the guards.
"There he is! The escaped pirate get him!"
"I'm Sorry Mary" Edward muttered before he took one last look at her, before running off and escaping.
