Once inside, Quasimodo thanked Isabelle and walked back up to the bell tower. She wanted to follow him, but she decided to let him recover from the disaster that had just occurred outside at the festival.
Soon after, a cloaked humpbacked figure walk through the door. They took off their cloak as soon they came in. It was Esmeralda with her goat in disguise. She looked around and saw Isabelle. She saw her as well and was a little taken aback.
All her life, she had been told by Frollo that all gypsies were evil sinners, sorcerers, and criminals. The last time she had a encounter with one was when she was 13 years old in this very cathedral.
"Hello again. I'm Esmeralda," she greeted her.
"And I'm Isabelle. Thank you for getting me off the stage and away from my father's guards," she said with relief. "I would had suffered severe consequences had it not been for you."
"He's your father!?" Esmeralda said in surprise.
"Not by blood, he took me in as a baby when my mother left me for dead," she replied.
"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that," Esmeralda said.
"That's okay, it happened a long, long time ago," replied Isabelle.
Just then the Frollo's Captain of the Guards, Phoebus, came up behind them. Esmeralda senses him, grabs his sword, and throws him down.
"You!" she confronted, holding him there with the sword pointed against his chin.
"Easy, easy. I just shaved this morning," he said.
"Really? You missed a spot," she replied.
"All right, all right. Just calm down. Just give a chance to apologize," he tried to explain.
"For what?" asked Isabelle, who was standing behind Esmeralda and her goat.
Esmeralda then let down her guard for a split second, then Phoebus grabs the sword from her hands and turns it on the two young women.
"That for example," he said with a smile.
"You sneaky son of a bitch," replied Esmeralda frowning.
"Ah, ah, ah! Watch it-you're in a church," he warned her.
"Are you this charming or am I just lucky?" she said as she grabbed a staff of candles by her.
Phoebus quickly blocked with his sword. They start to fight. Isabelle watches in awe once again. While they fought, Phoebus said,
"Candlelight, privacy, music. Can't think of a better place for hand-to-hand combat! You fight almost as well as a man!" he said in surprise.
"Funny. I was going to say the same thing about you," she replied.
"That's hitting it a little below the belt, don't you think?" he said.
"No. This is!" Esmeralda snapped back.
She swings the end at Phoebus, but he blocks it with his sword. She hits him in the face with the other end of the staff and he shook it off.
"Touche!" he exclaimed.
Then the goat rammed him in the chest.
"I didn't know you had a kid," he said looking down at the goat.
"Well, he doesn't take kindly to soldiers," she replied.
"Eh, I noticed. Permit me. I'm Phoebus. It means "sun god." And you ladies are?"
"Are you interrogating us?" asked Isabelle.
"It's called an introduction," he replied to her.
"You're not arresting us?" she asked again.
"As long as you both are here, I can't," he replied.
"You're not at all like the other soldiers," Esmeralda told him.
"Thank you," he replied.
"So, if you're not going to arrest us, what do you want?" she asked him.
"I'd settle for both of your names," he said.
"Esmeralda," she replied.
"Isabelle," she also replied.
"Those are beautiful. Much better than Phoebus anyways," he said.
Both Esmeralda and Phoebus gaze at each others' eyes. Isabelle, however cowered in fear as she saw Frollo barge in the church with his guards. This snapped Esmeralda and Phoebus back to realty.
"Good work, Captain! Now arrest them!" Frollo ordered.
"Claim sanctuary! Say it!" Phoebus whispered to them both. Isabelle was too scared to reply.
"You tricked me!" Esmeralda sneered at him.
"I'm waiting, Captain," Frollo said impatiently.
"I'm sorry, sir, they both claim sanctuary. There's nothing I can do," he replied.
"Then drag them outside and-" Frollo was interrupted.
"Frollo! You will not touch them!" ordered the Archdeacon. He then approached Esmeralda and Isabelle. "Don't worry, Minister Frollo has learned years ago to to respect the sanctity of the church."
Frollo gave the Archdeacon and cold, dark, glare. He then slowly approached Isabelle and said to her in cold, low, threatening voice,
"I will deal with you later, young lady." She back up in fear of his wrath.
He and his guards then turned to leave. However, Frollo hid behind a pillar, when no one, not even Isabelle, was looking.
Everyone, except Isabelle and Esmeralda started to leave as well.
Isabelle decided to go check on the Quasimodo, the bell ringer. But when she was half way from reaching the door to the bell tower, she saw Frollo emerge from behind the pillar, sneak behind Esmeralda, and grab her arm as he twisted it behind her. She didn't have time to warn Esmeralda.
Frollo then said something to her, but Isabelle couldn't make out what it was. She then saw him sniff her hair from the distance. She gagged. He's done this to her in the past as well.
Esmeralda then broke away from his grip and said something back, but Isabelle couldn't quite make it out either. Frollo continued saying things to Esmeralda, but it was too muffled to understand from where Isabelle was standing.
She did, however, see Frollo turn to her and smirk at her. He then walked towards the door.
"You both have chosen a magnificent prison, but is a prison nonetheless. Set one outside and your mine!" he said as he left, closing the door. Isabelle then ran over to Esmeralda.
"Are you ok? I saw what he just did to you," she said in concern.
"I'm fine," she replied back.
"I'm going to go check on the bell ringer," Isabelle told her as Esmeralda opened the door and saw guards outside the cathedral. Isabelle then walked towards the door that led to the bell tower, the same exact one that Frollo had forbidden her from entering since she was a small child.
She was greeted by a spiral staircase. She then began to ascend the stairs, wondering what her father was keeping from her all this time. She always wanted to come with him, but he never let her. Not once. She climbed the stairs until she reached the top and walked across the balcony while the sun was soon to set.
It reminded her of watching the city of the balcony from the Palace of Justice where she lived her whole life. She continued to walk across it until she reached the inside of the bell tower. She looked up around the place.
"Hello? Is anyone there?" she called out.
Quasimodo was sitting on top of one of the wooden beams near the bells in despair. When he heard Isabelle call out, he snapped out of it, got down and hid behind a statue. When he saw it was Isabelle, one of the young ladies who had helped him at the festival, he stared at her feeling very shy.
"I just came into check on you to see if you were alright," she called out once again.
He still stared at her, admiring her beauty. Her long light brown hair was wavy, down, and braided in the back in a medieval style braid and tied with a gold ribbon along with a gold head piece, her eyes were light blue as crystals with long eyelashes, her long dress was royal blue in color with gold trim around the edge of the sleeves and bottom of it. It also had some faint swirl designs on it as well. She looked like a princess.
He finally emerged from his hiding spot and slowly crept out as she was climbing the wooden stairs.
"Yes, I'm alright. Thank you again for helping me," he said slyly.
"You're welcome. I'm just glad that you are ok. Now if you excuse me, I must go," she said while turning around to leave.
But he didn't want her to go, not just yet. Being stuck up the bell tower with no human company got to be very lonely indeed. And finally someone, besides Frollo, visiting him up there was a very special treat.
"Wait, don't go!" Quasimodo cried out, following her. "Stay."
She stopped and looked back.
"I'll show you around," he said now with more confidence.
"I'd like that very much," Isabelle replied with a smile as she followed him up the wooden steps.
