It took a few weeks of Balbo talking to Azalea's stomach like he was having a conversation with someone before his father asked him what that was about. He didn't know that his world was going to change again in the best way possible. Frerin walked outside to find his son in his personal garden planting many different roses in all colors beaming ear to ear.
"Balbo, my son. Come sit with me for a minute," he directed smiling when Balbo gave a small huffing sound. He knew his son was irritated being interrupted in his garden. He took a great deal of pride in it and always made sure he finished a task he had started in his garden. Balbo's garden was the most beautiful and the biggest in all of Hobbitian.
"Yes, Father," he said as he sat on the bench he and his father had created together. Balbo knew what was coming, and he was more than happy to know about his little sister before any of the others even suspected what was going on.
"My son, why have you been talking to your mother's stomach for the last few months?" he asked genuinely worried about his son. It wasn't something his son did, and he was worried that something may be wrong with Balbo. He couldn't take it if something was wrong with his child health-wise.
"Mama is having a baby. My baby sister is coming," he beamed. "I can hear her thoughts and feel her emotions," Frerin was stunned but overcome with joy. He had a feeling it was Ruby making another entrance and he was happy and filled with pride at the thought of his children having that connection again, and by the sounds of it, the connection was stronger than it had been back in the magical world.
"Is she healthy? Happy?" Frerin asked as he stood to share the news with his beautiful wife. "More than you can even imagine, Father. Though, she's happiest when mom is around stone. She can sense it and hear it. The stone comforts her," Balbo shared before going and finishing his rose bushes. Frerin was stunned.
It's been more than a century since a dwarf from the Durin bloodline was born with stone sense. Thorin was the last as far as he knew. He didn't think to ask, and now he needed to know more than ever because those born with stone sense, needed to be around stone to keep healthy and he knew he needed to find some way to keep his little gem happy and healthy.
Azalea put her book down when her husband entered the room. She was hoping he got some answers from their son, and from the stunning smile on his face, he got some good news. "Well?" she asked as he tugged her into his arms resting a hand protectingly over her lower stomach.
"My love, we're having another baby. A little girl. Balbo can communicate with her and feel her emotions," he explained and Azalea was overcome with love as she placed a hand over Frerin's.
"Ruby," she whispered. "The Valor gave us both of our children. A true second chance," she beamed happily. She didn't recall ever being this happy aside from in her first life when she discovered she was carrying her twins. They may not be twins in this life, but it was wonderful that they still had their connection.
As Frerin beamed with pride, he had a sudden thought about what to do for his little gem to make sure she remains in perfect health. "Azalea, my love, I must write Throin and Dis. We need stone to line her bedroom, from what Balbo says she can sense stone, her nature is going to be more dwarfish, then hobbitish, and the stone with help keep her healthy," Frerin explained causing a ball of worry to form inside Azalea's chest.
She nods in agreement trying not to worry so much, but she couldn't help but place her hands protectingly over her stomach. "Yes, it has to be perfect for our little Ruby, and oh, should we call her Ruby again or another name?"
As much as he would have loved to give their daughter the same name, and as much as he wanted her to be named after a gem, he knew this was their little girl's fresh start. "Ruby is Dwarfish sounding, and your mother's side of the family uses flowers and precious metals both, but I think something new for a new start," Frerin explained as he wrapped his arms around his One and daughter.
Azalea beams happily and nods, "You're right of course," causing him to smirk a little. "Of course, I am," causing Azalea to playfully shove him. "Go wrote your brother and sister," she directed, shaking her head.
Outside Bag End, Bilbo comes walking up Bagshot Row whistling after going to the market to order food and household supplies. He smiles seeing his young nephew tending his personal garden. Heading over he sits and relaxes on the bench in his own garden. Pulling out his pipe he sits and starts smoking making sure the smoke doesn't blow in Balbo's face. Balbo smiles at his uncle with a bit of mischievousness in it.
"Now dear nephew what is that look for?"
"Mom's pregnant again with…with Ruby, I'm getting my sister back,"
Bilbo falls off his bench, "That's why you've been paying so much attention to your mom's stomach,"
Balbo nods, "Yeah, and you all thought I was being a silly little kid," he started laughing, "it was fun driving you all crazy,"
Bungo and Belladonna walk by arm in arm hearing the conversation they walk over, "Bilbo you did the same when I was pregnant with Azalea," Belladonna tells him.
Bungo nods, "Sometimes a child just knows, but with all of you there is a special bond, more with Balbo and his sister,"
Bilbo tilts his head and smiles, "Well this calls for a party!"
Bilbo runs into the smial yelling congratulations and about planning the party. Azalea shakes her head in amusement and starts yelling that she's planning the party, not Bilbo. Balbo hears them and snickers while Bungo and Belladonna laugh at their antics.
Balbo, "Children that's what they are, giant children," causing his grandparents to burst out laughing and hugged close, making Balbo happily beam from ear to ear.
