Grandmaster Li Dao: Beginnings of a legend.

-Grandmaster Li Dao is one of my avian ocs who is the same species as Crane. He's around 90 years old currently, but in this specific one shot he's around 12. He currently runs the Li Dao Kung fu Academy in Guizhou, but this is his start under Flying Rhino's training in the Kung Fu Council.

"Come on!" Chang, a ten-year old goat from the village where Li Dao grew up, shoved his friend in the side to get him to snap out of his thoughts.

Li Dao flinched and turned around all the way to face his friend. "Where are we going?"

"Grandmaster Flying Rhino's about to speak!"

Li Dao sighed. Again?

"But it'll be a big crowd, and…" Li Dao trailed off, glancing down at the floor. He was heavily embarrassed at his clouded left eye. Others said it made him look weird.

…others said he doesn't belong because of it.

He was half-blind, after all. What good can an avian with one sighted eye do in this village?

What could he do at all?
He let out yet another sigh before he lifted his head to stare at his friend. "Okay, let's go."
Chang and Li Dao headed over to the crowd gathering over by Grandmaster Rhino-formerly a student of Grandmaster Oogway (Jade Palace)-of the Kung fu Council and Shaolin, a famous and renowned palace for the arts. Li Dao had always found it interesting.

"Greetings, Villagers!" Grandmaster Rhino spoke from his podium on the stage. "I am grateful that you all came to listen to me speak today."

Li Dao glanced around and saw that some selective children and adults were staring at him. He felt a small tap on his shoulder and turned around to see his parents standing beside him. His mother wrapped her wing around him and pressed him close to her.

"I know it's frightening," Li Dao's mother said, whispering. "But try not to worry."

Li Dao gave a slight nod. "I know." Li Dao was always intimidated by the other bullies who said that he was good-for-nothing and useless. He had tried to avoid them at all costs, but it had only ended up making it worse.

...that was one of thr reasons Li Dao's parents enlisted him to be a student in the Kung Fu Council.

He did it to give him strength, power, and a new sense of respect and determination.

Li Dao's mother glanced at her only son once more before going to stand by her husband, who was fondly glancing upwards at Flying Rhino as he spoke.

Chang was standing beside Li Dao, glancing up at him every so often, which Li Dao found immensely annoying. Grandmaster Rhino was basically talking about random things going on with his palace, and blah blah blah the usual blah blah blah stuff.

Boring.

"I have one more thing to say before I return to my duties at the palace," Grandmaster Rhino said, addressing the villagers. "I have recently spoken with some parents of two young children that will be joining as students to the Kung Fu Council,"

Chang gave Li Dao an excited look. Li Dao just rolled his eyes and looked away.

"May I please call up here Chang and Li Dao from the village?"

….what?

Li Dao saw gazes turning to him and Chang. Chang lifted his head and grabbed Li Dao's wing, pulling him over to the stage where the masters and Grandmaster Rhino of the Kung Fu Council were staring at them both.

Li Dao wanted to fly away and go under a hole in the ground. All those villagers staring at him….

What was going through their heads?

Ugh, that bird can't be a kung fu student!

He can't even see right!

He looks so odd.

Wow, I bet all the enemies will be SO afraid of him.

Li Dao shut his eyes tight and let out a breath. What in all of China is going on?

Chang ran right up to Grandmaster Rhino's side and stood facing the villagers, thinking he was going to have to give a speech. Li Dao suddendly felt furious at his parents for not telling him sooner.

Thanks a lot. Li Dao huffed. It would have been nice to have known sooner rather than later.

"Thank you for this-"

"Shh," Grandmaster Rhino extended his staff to the child and rested it on his shoulder. "Stay silent for now."

Chang gave a look at Li Dao that was excited but irritated. Of course he would be excited. Chang was always excited about the stupidest things.

"These two children have been given over to the Kung Fu Council for teaching and guidance in the art of Kung Fu. May the village look kindly upon them as they begin their journey.

Li Dao's mind was spinning. What is in it for him? Are his parents deliberately sending him away? Why is this happening?

The villagers' sudden cheers cleared Li Dao's thoughts for the time. One of the kung fu masters of the Council came forward and gently pressed him beside Chang. Li Dao made himself look out at the crowd and put on a happy demeanor, although he was confused and baffled.

Can someone tell me what just happened?

As a few days had passed, Li Dao was sent away by his parents to the massive province of Guangdong, where the Kung Fu Council resided. Li Dao himself still didn't understand why he was being brought here, save for the fact his parents mentioned that they wanted him to forge this path of honor and respect.

Upon their arrival, Li Dao and Chang were shown to their chambers in the massive student's room-which, by the way, was a MESS! Students everywhere were throwing stuff at each other, and arguing over the dinner table located a little ways away from the rooms. NO ONE LOOKED ORGANIZED.

NO ONE looked like humble Shaolin students, like Li Dao was expecting.

If this is what Shaolin Kung fu training forms these children into then I don't want to be a part of it. Li Dao thought with bitterness as he tossed aside a lone chair lying on the chair, probably thrown from one of the students.

Regardless, Li Dao suddendly longed for the peaceful quiet of home in Guizhou, rather than the bustling city of Gongmen City deep in the shore of Guangdong.

"Hey!" Chang yelled as he walked into the eating room after dumping his stuff into Li Dao and Chang's room that was to be shared with a load of others. "Are you our new teammates?"

"Oh, it's the new kids," One of the students got down from his chair and did a neat little bow, which impressed LI Dao. No one had ever bowed to him before. That one little move brightened his mood toward these children, even if he himself was only twelve years old and thought himself better. "Welcome to Gongmen City."

"I'm Chang, and this is Li Dao." Chang spoke in a childish voice compared to the older student, which was just a little older than Li Dao himself.

"I'm Bingshao." The student said, glancing at Chang but staring longer at Li Dao. The rather...muscular goat child stared intently at Li Dao's face, which made him glance away.

"What's wrong with your eye?" Bingshao asked Li Dao, putting his head to one side and placing his hands behind his back, as if judging him.

Great start to this whole thing, isn't it?
Li Dao was hoping that no one would say anything and notice, but if they did he was hoping that it wouldn't be as judging as Bingshao made it seem.

With a step back, Li Dao muttered, "I-I'm half-blind." Li Dao was totally aware of the others looking at him and seemingly immensely judging him.

When Li Dao thought everything was going okay, and that Bingshao was surprisingly taking it well, Bingshao let out a laugh.

A sharp laugh, in fact.

"What? A half-blind kung fu student? That's not even possible!"

One of the other students spoke up. "That's just as absurd as that red panda student from the Jade Palace!"

Li Dao blinked. A red panda? Li Dao knew red pandas were rare in China and in population, but he didn't expect one to be enrolled in the Shaolin.

I guess if one red panda's brave enough to join the Shaolin then I should be too, right?

Bingshao scoffed as he rolled his eyes exasperatedly. "And here I was thinking the great masters wouldnt be enlisting any more outcasts."

Li Dao flinched as Bingshao spoke out the word outcast with disgust. How DARE he say such a thing!

If Li Dao wasn't as clear minded as he was, he may have not cared as much about Bingshao's skill and may have crashed right into him, trying to teach him a "lesson."

"Grandmaster Rhino said we were all to eat spicy noodle soup today." A small rabbit student said, possibly trying to break up the tension as he noticed Li Dao and Bingshao at each other's throats already. "It's a tradition when every new student enters the palace."

"Thank you." Li Dao didn't even glance at the rabbit, but instead watched Bingshao as he sat down on his chair. He narrowed his one good eye at the goat and tensed. Just you wait until I start learning kung fu.

...then you had better watch out.

Chang took a seat beside Li Dao and rested his hand on Li Dao's shoulder.

"Don't listen to him, okay? Chang whispered, trying to keep his voice down. "You're not an outcast and you never will be."

Li Dao smiled as he gave a soft nod to his friend and began eating the soup he was given. As he glanced around the huge table in the student's chambers, he caught the looks of many students as his gaze made its way all the way around, eventually catching up to Bingshao.

I'll never be an outcast.

Li Dao took a sip of tea as his gaze met Bingshao's, their fierce tempers rising as the steam rose from the soup. Li Dao knew he was new in the Council for now, but someday he will find his place and rise up alongside some of the greatest masters in China

Mark my words:

I will prove it.

Wow...

Kind of sad, considering Li Dao's condition. It's kind of funny to see Shifu mentioned (did you catch up on that?)

Please let me know what you think of this! I really want to hear what you think of Li Dao and the fic so far!

Please leave a review! It is great to hear your thoughts!
