Jamie peeked into the bedroom and sighed at the sight before him. His wife was buried under the covers and had the television turned onto the news for background noise as she laid in bed. She hadn't said much to him today, besides a barely audible good morning when she went into the kitchen to grab her coffee before retreating back to the bedroom.

It was already mid-afternoon so he assumed that their Fourth of July plans weren't going to happen. The plan was to head out to Rockaway Beach for a few hours before coming back home and going to the roof of their building to enjoy the various firework shows that were put on around the city. It was a tradition they'd started from the summer of their engagement and hoped to keep going in a few years once they had kids.

Jamie didn't understand it. The day before, his wife was in great spirits. They had spent the entire day together, getting a few errands done around the city and had a nice dinner at her favorite Mexican restaurant. But today, from the moment she woke up, she wasn't happy. He tried to think. It couldn't have been anything that he did because if he says or does something she doesn't agree with, she lets him know very quick. It couldn't be her cycle because after five years together, he knew the schedule of her cycle like the back of his hand. He tried to go in and talk to her a few times already but all she would reply with is that she wanted to be left alone. It was extremely rare for Eddie to get in a funk so it worried him as to what the reason was.

He looked at the time and it was almost three o'clock. He decided to take it upon himself and make them something to eat since neither of them had eaten anything yet. If she wanted some, then great. If not, it would be there for her later. He quickly whipped up two steak sandwiches, her favorite, with a side of salt and vinegar chips and filled up her favorite water bottle. He laid them all out on a serving tray then made his way into the bedroom.

Upon entry, he was greeted by a sight that broke his heart. Eddie was laying facing the wall, covered up to her chin with their white duvet, wiping away tears. He immediately set down the tray and went to her side.

"What's wrong, hon?" he asked gently, moving a few stray hairs out of her face as he kneeled down next to her.

She shook her head, "Nothing."

He gave her a look, "Eddie. Talk to me, babe. What's wrong? You're worrying me."

It took a few minutes for her to gather herself before she could answer. "Honestly, I don't know," she finally responded.

"You don't know?" he questioned.

She sniffled, "Yeah."

He truly didn't know how to respond to that. But, he decided to do what he knows best.

Jamie shed his shirt, then tapped her side, "Scoot over, babe."

She moved over willingly and he settled in next to her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pressed a long kiss to her forehead. He could see that she was starting to relax, which was a good sign.

"Can I ask you something?" he asked after a few minutes.

"What is it?" she responded.

"Did I do or say something that upset you but you don't want to tell me? Because if it's that, then I'm really sorry, Ed."

"No. No," she replied. "You definitely didn't do anything. I promise."

"Did something happen this week?" he continued.

"No. I just... I feel down and I don't know why. It's not anything you or anyone did. I'm just sad. I know it seems crazy but that's just the way I feel."

"It's not crazy," he chastised gently as he ran a hand down her shoulder. "Not at all. It's okay to feel sad. Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"Because I thought you wouldn't understand," she sighed.

"Maybe I don't," he replied. "But I'll do my best to try. No matter what way you're feeling, even if you think it's crazy, I want to know so I can help."

She leaned her forehead against his cheek. "I'm sorry that I've been shutting you out all day," she whispered.

"It's okay," he responded. "I'm just glad that you told me. What do you need from me, Ed? Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?"

She gave her first smile of the day, "You're doing it already."

He squeezed her against him, "Are you hungry? I made you a steak sandwich with a side of salt and vinegar chips."

"In a minute," she replied. "I know we didn't make it out to the beach today but I still want to go up to the roof for the fireworks tonight."

"You got it," he said. "I have everything ready to go."

They laid in silence for awhile before Jamie looked down to see that Eddie was fast asleep. He couldn't help but smile to himself and felt relieved that she was feeling a little better. Today didn't go as planned but if he was being honest, he'd much rather be here in bed with his wife than on an overly crowded beach. He finally hugged her close, pressed a kiss to her forehead, and joined her in sleep.
