The next day, Vapor was excited to go to school. She didn't need any convincing to go inside this time. In fact, she tore away from her parents' hands.
Ember and Wade were honestly shocked. They look at each other with wide eyed expressions. It was... A little too easy.
"I remember when my ashfa took me to my first week of school. I caused a scene every single time." Ember recalled.
"Me too! I cried every time..." Wade admitted, rubbing the back of his head. "Vapor's a good kid."
"Which makes us—" Ember raised her brows slightly.
Wade finished her sentence happily, taking her hands in his. "—great parents!" He did a little happy dance, taking Ember with him. She was laughing all the way.
"Ahem."
The happy parents cut their celebration short as they were blocking the door to their classroom. Another set of parents, an earth man and a water woman stood with their mud daughter.
"Oh...! Hey!" Ember greeted as Wade set her down. They both smile awkwardly. "You must be Mandy's parents. Vapor was telling us how they became friends."
The earth man chuckled. "Pleased to meet you. Our Mandy is so shy, so when she came home babbling about her new friend we were wondering if we could set up a playdate."
"Really?" Vapor's first playdate! Ember screamed in her head. Both she and Wade were incredibly touched that their daughter had such an effect on another child.
"That's awesome!" Wade added, equally excited as his wife. If not, more. He was visibly bouncing with excitement. "Since our kids are best friends, we should be best friends too!"
Ember slightly elbowed him. It wasn't missed on the other parents. "Isn't that a bit much?" she whispered towards Wade. Mandy's parents looked like the sophisticated type. They probably found them weird.
Wade simply shrugged and smiled awkwardly, Ember mimicking the same grin.
Mandy's parents looked at each other and then back.
"Well..." Mandy's mother spoke. "I don't see why not. It would be good to get to know each other if our daughters are going to be friends." She placed a hand on Mandy's shoulder. "No go on, best you get to class dear."
The little mud girl nodded and walked forward. "Excuse me sir," she dipped her head out of politeness. "Mudemoiselle."
Ember and Wade move out of the way to let Mandy pass. Once she went into the classroom, Ember and Wade exchange information with her parents.
They were Russet and Raini Dewdrop. Russet took on his wife's last name, making them the Dewdrops. They had a family business in designing clothes. That would explain how classy they were.
When it was time to leave, Ember and Wade began to part ways again, sharing a quick kiss. These days, the only time they spent together was having to take care of Vapor. The rest of the time was spent working.
"You know..." Ember said. "Before our parents get here at the end of the week, we should set up a date night."
"I like the way you think." Wade winked at her. "We could set up a playdate with the Dewdrops and let them watch over Vapor for a bit so we could have are alone time."
Ember nodded repeatedly. "I was just thinking the same thing."
Wade practically had to hold in his snicker as he proceeded to make a joke. "I guess you could say that we're on the same wavelength."
Ember rolled her eyes playfully as she laughed. "Oh haha, very funny."
"C'mooooon," Wade nudged her with his elbow. "You liked it. It was a great joke!"
"Yeah, yeah." Ember leaned in to peck him on the cheek. "We've got to go to work now." At that statement, Wade visibly sagged. His watery form dropped, extenuating his frown. "I know..." Ember sighed. "This is why we need that date night."
"It can't come soon enough." Wade said.
"True that."
In class Mrs. Goode had the kindergarteners draw. For those students that give off heat, they were given charcoal and chalk instead of crayons. Vapor, while a warm element, could still draw with crayons. Just not for an extended period of time. She had learned this when she was a toddler when her dad got her a box to color with.
They were tasked with drawing their favorite animal and Vapor wanted to try drawing with the charcoal. She turned around to a smoke element sitting behind her. "Hey Ash," she said. "Can I borrow that?"
"No." Ash responded. "Get your own." He blew a puff of smoke into Vapor's face, briefly turning her skin black.
"Hey!"
Ash pointed and laughed at her. "Haha! Look at your face! It's all dirty!"
Vapor rubbed at her face and her skin returned to its normal translucence. With a huff she turned back into her seat and began coloring angrily. She pressed the crayons hard into the paper, turning them into little nubs.
At the end of the day when it was time to be picked up, Vapor ran to her parents and hugged her father's legs.
"Whoa... Hey." He placed a hand atop her head, caressing her swirling hair. "What's up?"
"Ash was being mean to me. He blew his smoke into my face." Vapor sniffed, rubbing her nose on Wade. It would have been gross but being part water, Vapor's snot was also water.
"Ash?" Wade echoed, setting his brow in a straight line. "Who's Ash?"
Vapor peeled from him to point Ash out from the crowd of other students and parents. He was with his fire mother and air father.
Ember was actually glad that Ash's mother was a fire person like her. It should be easy to make a connection. "Let me go talk," Ember offered. "Stay right here."
Ember walked up to Ash's parents, momentarily introducing herself. "Hi... I'm Ember, Vapor's mom. She tells me that your son was being mean to her and blowing smoke into her face."
"So?" Ash's mother looked rather unimpressed.
Ember blinked. "Excuse me?"
"He probably likes her and is trying to get her attention." she smirked.
"What?" Ember's flames flared up. "That little ashtray is bullying my daughter and that's all you have to say?"
"Ember..." Wade was at his wife's side, trying to calm her down before things got out of hand. Unfortunately it might have been too late.
"Not now Wade!" Ember snapped at him. Her flames were beginning to turn purple. She was about to tear this other mother a new one until she felt Vapor tugging at the hem of her dress. She looked afraid. This made Ember reel back into reality. She took a deep breath and relaxed a bit. "Look— please talk to your son and don't let it happen again. Please."
Ember took Vapor's hand in hers and began walking away.
