"So Jan, how about going for a coffee?" Max asked my mom.
"Oh… Um I don't know,it's kind of late and I have to clean up and close up the…"
"She'd love to!" I interrupted
"Devin?!" she shouted as she pulled me to the side.
"Come on mom, he seems like a nice guy and I don't mind closing up for you, go have some fun." I whispered to her.
"Really?"
"Really mom, go enjoy yourself for a change."
"Okay." she said as she turned to Max
"Okay?" he replied
"Just bring her home at a reasonable hour." I teased
"Yes ma'am." he responded
I watched as the two of them walked away; my mom had the biggest smile on her face I had ever seen and it made me happy. My father had put her through so much it was time for her to let loose and be free, maybe even meet someone who'll treat her like a queen.
I had just finished putting the chairs upside down on the tables so I could wash the floor when the door jingled and in walked Marco, Paul and Laddie. I looked to see that platinum blonde (who's name I hadn't caught yet) Dwayne and the pretty girl had stayed outside by the bikes.
"Hey guys, long time no see." I joked with a smile
"Laddie wanted an ice cream cone and we saw you were still open." Said Marco as he chewed on his thumb.
Paul walked over and threw his arm over my shoulder before leaning down and whispering into my ear "Ice cream's just an excuse, Marco wanted to see you again, he thinks you're cute."
I knew my face must have turned beet red at his comment. Marco Grabbed Paul and shoved him off me before shouting "What'd you say to her Paul!?"
"Nothing bro, I didn't say a thing."
"What'd you say to her?" he said as the two began rough housing.
I began making my way over to the ice cream with Laddie while the two blondes continued to push and shove each other; knocking over tables and chairs as they went The minute the two began to get out of hand the door jingled again and in walked the platinum blonde. It was strange to see the two immediately stop the second he stepped in. it was almost like he shouted at them even though he didn't even say a word. He just gave them a look and made his way to the ice cream case. The two fell in line behind him.
"Can I get a scoop of mint chocolate chip?" he said to me.
"Sure uhhhh."
"David. His name is David." said Laddie
"Okay a mint chocolate chip for David and what would you like Laddie?"
"Bubble gum." he said
"What about you Paul?"
"Na I'm good." he said
I looked at Marco who seemed to be staring off into space while chewing his thumb again.
"Marco?"
"Huh?"
"Ice cream?"
"Oh no I'm good thanks though babe."
I smiled and got to work scooping Laddie's first. When I went to scoop out the mint chocolate chip for David, the weirdest thing happened. I could have sworn the chocolate chips turned into tiny spiders so I yanked my hand from the container. The boys were kind of trying to hide their snickering but I heard them.
"Something wrong Devin?" asked David with a smirk on his face. The boys snickered again.
"I just…I swear I saw…….Never mind." I shook my head and looked back down at the container. The chips were back to being normal chocolate chips again. I quickly scooped David's ice cream before any more weird things happened and handed it to him.
David had a smirk on his face as he went to lick his ice cream and I swear the tiny chocolate chips turned into tiny spiders again.
"What's a matter Devin?" David asked
"Nothing…. I just……I could have sworn the chips looked like tiny spiders, ha ha."
"Spider?!" he chuckled while shaking his head. He pushed open the door and exited the shop followed by Laddie and Paul. Marco was just about to follow them but he paused at the door; he turned back to look at me while still nervously chewing his thumb.
"Fuck it." I heard him whisper
In seconds he was standing in front of me with both hands holding my face, I grabbed both sides of his jacket just as he pulled me in for a kiss. At first his kiss was gentle then it became more rushed, more passionate, almost feral; it felt almost like he was trying to devour me. When he finally pulled away I saw his eyes weren't their usual blue green they were a golden yellow. He quickly shut them and leaned his forehead on mine. I could tell he was trying to regain his composure and after a few minutes he looked down at me and whispered "I need to go."
"Okay." I whispered back. He gave me a quick peck on the lips and then he was out the door quicker than I thought humanly possible. He winked at me before starting his bike and racing off with the rest of them.
Three weeks had passed since my mom went for coffee with Max and she continued to go out with him almost every night since then. I really didn't mind except I seemed to have taken over for her at the bake shop which left me with little to no time to socialise myself.
The biker boys never came into the shop again after the night Marco kissed me. I did see and hear them almost every night. Sometimes I'd catch Marco looking my way, he'd smile and wave before disappearing into the crowd of people on the boardwalk. He looked like he wanted to come talk to me but David always seemed to distract him or pull him away. Sometimes he'd even leave me things like cool patches or mixed tapes at the shop for me when I wasn't around, the last gift was an earring that matched his skull one.
It was pouring rain out today and I woke up with a horrible headache. I managed to make it to nine o'clock before it became really bad. I asked Jennifer and the other employee named Deb if they minded closing up for the night and headed home. The rain had finally stopped but the cars that passed me as I walked kept splashing up the water on the road soaking me. I was about half way home when a jeep full of surf nazis pulled in front of me blocking my path.
"Hey baby, wanna lift?" asked the driver.
"Ugh no thanks." I said before attempting to pass them.
The two in the back seat jumped out and began approaching me. "Come on girl, we can show you a good time."
"I said no thank you." I said to him as I stepped away from them.
One of them went to grab my arm but I shoved him into his buddy and made a split decision to run into the bushes on the side of the road. What I wasn't expecting was a drop off on the other side of said bushes. I fell down the embankment and landed hard at the bottom knocking the wind out of myself. I could still hear the surf nazis at the top rustling around in the bushes above. "Get up! Run! Go!" my brain kept yelling as I gasped for air.
I managed to make it to my feet and climbed over the sand dunes and on to the beach before I heard them yell "There she is!"
I stumbled a few times while running as fast as I could but they caught up to me quickly. I thought I saw bike headlights in the distance and my mind told me to scream for Marco; something was telling me that he'd protect me, so I began to scream "Marco!" at the top of my lungs. I managed to scream out his name two more times before the nazi tackled me to the ground. He flipped me over quickly and tried to pin my arms down but I kicked and slapped him and tried to buck him off of me while screaming at the top of my lungs.
"Shut up you stupid bitch!" he screamed before punching me in the face. I continued to try to fight him off even after several blows to the face and ribs. The second nazi who was with him finally caught up to us and grabbed my wrists, pinning my arms above my head.
"MARCOOOOOO!" I screamed one last time before the nazi on top of me began choking me. They were trying to shut me up and after the lack of oxygen from being choked I could feel myself slipping into unconsciousness.
"No no no no no. You gotta fight, you gotta stay awake." I mind screamed at me.
I felt the nazi on top of me tear open my shirt and run his tongue from the top of my throat all the way down to my belly button. The one holding my hands was suddenly ripped off me. I heard him let out a blood curdling scream followed by an eerie gurgling noise. The one on top of me then let out a terrifying scream and I felt a hot liquid splatter my bare skin. I tried so hard to open my eyes but they just wouldn't respond. When I felt a hand brush the hair from my face I began flailing and trying to hit the person. My brain kept calling out "Marco!" over and over again. and the person above me grabbed my arms gently and a soft voice said "Devin, Devin it's me. I'm here babe calm down."
"Marco." I whispered weakly
"It's me, I'm here babe."
I opened my eyes to see a blurry Marco staring down at me. His eyes were that weird golden yellow colour again but I didn't care. I quickly wrapped my arms around his neck and began weeping. "Shit." I heard him say before he was suddenly gone from my grasp.
"She's bleeding, David I need you…..She's…….I……"
I felt someone pick me up and at first I thought it was Marco but when my face rested on his shoulder I felt the fabric of David's coat and smelt the smell of cigarettes. I opened my eyes a tiny bit and he looked down at me for a split second. I felt the wind whip past us and when I opened my eyes again we were in my room. David was setting me down on my bed, Marco was slowly pacing the room while chewing his thumb, Dwayne was watching from the balcony and Paul was laying sideways in my arm chair.
David disappeared into my bathroom and returned with a cloth and some rubbing alcohol.
"This is gonna hurt a little bit." he said before wiping my cheek with some rubbing alcohol. "She's gonna need stitches for that and I think two…..No three of her ribs may be broken." he said to Marco before standing back up. My eyes never left Marco. I was so concerned about him pacing the room looking like he was struggling with something. Davis must have picked up on it because he whispered to me "He'll be fine, he doesn't like the sight of blood, it's like a phobia of his." He walked out onto my balcony and lit a cigarette.
Marco mouthed "I'm sorry" to me.
"It's okay." I mouthed back "Thank you for saving me."
We were both smiling at each other like two love sick idiots when my mom and Max burst through my bedroom door a few minutes later. "Oh my god! My poor baby!" she shouted as she pulled me into a hug. I let out a yelp of pain from the sudden movement and she quickly let go. "I'm so sorry."
"Jan, David here said she needs stitches for that cut and he believes they broke her ribs, we should take her to the hospital."
"When did they talk? I thought as I looked at David coming back in from my balcony.
"Oh? Oh my god, okay." she said as she stood up.
"Let's take her to the hospital Jan." Max said as he walked over to us.
"Honey?" she said to me
I was about to answer her when my vision went back.
When I woke up I was laying in a hospital bed; a nurse was stitching up my cheek; I must have flinched cause she said "Oh I'm sorry I didn't realise you were awake Miss. Parker, I'll go get your parents."
