Aang's not sure how he got back to his cot, but he's waking up now, and it's morning. He breathes slowly, remembering the night before. It… was a mess. Zuko tried to ask for help, but he refused him. In fact, he thoroughly attacked him. He's not sure, now, exactly what he was thinking, or why he thought it. He's not sure what was driving him. He remembers feeling angry, but now, he just feels completely empty.

Which. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

It doesn't change the facts, though - he knows he hurt Zuko, at least emotionally. He acted without thinking. And he needs to fix it. He's not sure how to do it, but he can at least try.

He's still in his uniform from the day before; it's grimy with the dirt of battle. So, before trying to fix anything, he pulls on a more-clean uniform, and transfers his letters to new pockets. Quietly - to not wake any of the others - he quickly Speaks to Rihamon. He's not quite sure what to say, so he says he's grateful that it's been getting warmer. He wishes he was actually grateful for the warmth, but in reality, he doesn't really care. It'll get colder before too long.

He goes outside his tent to start preparing breakfast. He reminds himself that they're lucky to even get to make a fire - the enemy already knows where they are, so they're allowed to give their location. It's a small bright spot in war, and their commanders know they need it. And no matter how truly terrible their breakfast tastes, at least they get to eat something.

He arrives at the fire, and notices that Zuko's already there, staring at the flames. That's strange, because everyone else is asleep. Aang's going to ignore it, but he's still going to try and make things better. So, he sits next to him and remembers how to smile. He hadn't remembered it being this hard, but it fits on him like his pendant.

"Zuko," he says, and his voice sounds happy, which is… unexpected, but not unwelcome. "How did you sleep?"

Zuko starts, turns, and stares at him. He's probably still upset about last night. Aang needs to show him that he's okay. "I mean I guess you're up… sorry, I shouldn't have asked. I feel like it's getting colder. I thought we'd reached peak coldness, but I guess not. Is that why you're up?"

"Uh," says Zuko. "No. I just couldn't sleep. I can leave, if you want to sit by the fire alone."

Aang shrugs. "No. That's alright. I'm glad to be here with you"

Zuko nods, and they fall into a lapse of silence. After a moment, Aang decides that it's time to finally address the issue. "Hey," he says softly, "I'm sorry about last night, 'kay?" Zuko won't look at him, but Aang watches him to see his reaction… and he looks like he's the one who attacked someone over the fire. Aang sighs. "I'm not usually like that. I don't know what happened, but I can promise it won't happen again." Zuko still doesn't quite look convinced, but it's okay. Aang can work on it, until Zuko finally feels like he belongs in the group.
