"What do you think it says?" Beca stared at the envelope that was sitting on the kitchen table.
"I don't know." Chloe was busy pacing back and forth, also looking at the envelope like it might explode any second.
Beca had come home to her wife holding a letter from West Point academy. They had been waiting to hear back ever since Charlie had applied. That had been three weeks ago and Beca had to watch her wife and step-daughter slowly devolve into nervous wrecks.
"Think we should open it?" Beca asked.
"It's not addressed to you Becs, that's illegal." Chloe scolded.
"It's only illegal if you get caught." Beca tried to joke.
Chloe rolled her eyes but kept pacing. "Does it make me a bad mother if I'm hoping it's a rejection letter?" She asked. She was wringing her hands and still pacing. Beca rolled her eyes and stood up, pulling her wife into a hug that Chloe returned a little too forcefully.
"Being concerned about our kid's safety makes you a good mom." Beca whispered in her ear. "I'd be a little concerned if you didn't."
At least that got a laugh from Chloe. "Why does her school have to go till three?"
"Most schools do Chlo."
"I know that." Chloe scoffed. "Doesn't make me feel better."
They both turned when they heard the front door open. Charlie came walking through the door to see the anxious look on her mother's face. It still shocked Beca a little just how much Charlie looked like Chloe.
"What's going on?" Charlie looked to the table where her letter was waiting. "Is that?"
Chloe nodded and picked up the letter, handing it to her daughter with shaking fingers. "It arrived this afternoon."
Charlie just stared at the envelope, not even moving as her parents waited. "I don't think I can open it." She handed the paper back to Chloe. "I'm too nervous."
Chloe looked over at her wife, a pleading expression on her face that made Beca roll her eyes. "You two are ridiculous." Beca snatched the envelope away and tore it open. "Now," She gave Charlie a serious look. "No matter what this says, we are very proud of you."
Chloe grabbed Charlie's hand and squeezed it. The two redheads hadn't exactly seen eye to eye over this whole situation but Charlie knew that her mother supported her. Beca reached into the envelope and pulled out the letter. She carefully unfolded it, reading the first line with a growing sense of excitement.
"Dear Charlotte Morgan Walp. We are pleased to inform you–"
Beca didn't make it further than that before Chloe was screaming and pulling her stunned daughter into a tight hug. Beca joined in on the hug, feeling an overwhelming sense of pride in her step-daughter.
(Four Years Later)
"GRADUATES! DISMISSED!" Hundreds of hats flew into the air as the freshly minted officers celebrated their graduation.
Beca and Chloe watched from the stands knowing that it would be a while before they could find their daughter. When they finally did find each other Chloe wrapped her daughter in a tight hug. "Your father would be so proud of you." She pulled back to see a few tears running down Charlie's cheek. Chloe used her thumb to brush away the tears, "And so am I."
"Thanks mom." Charlie hugged her mom again before turning to Beca. "And thank you. I don't know if I could have made it without your help."
Beca shrugged her shoulders. "Please. All I did was pull some strings. You're the one who worked her butt off for this. Lieutenant Walp." Charlie's smile grew at the silly use of her new rank.
"Thank you…mom." Charlie pulled Beca into a hug. Something that Beca was grateful for, it helped to hide her tears.
