Author's Note: hey y'all I hope this little fluff piece is something of your liking. This story was inspired by Frank Sinatra's strangers in the night as well. I do not own anything.
They were nothing but two strangers in the large ballroom surrounded by the most exclusive society dressed in exquisite dresses and tuxedos. Adrien Agreste was receiving his father's guests with a plastered smile. His soft golden locks were groomed over, as per his father's request, to keep every single hair in place. He was wearing a half mask hiding the top part of his face – only revealing his green dull eyes from boredom and melancholy. He was a tall lean young adult, in his 20th year. He was in constant training and his tone muscles were visible through the close fitted tailored tuxedo. At this age he shouldn't be a prisoner of his own family's influence, but his father had made sure to control every part of his life – even if he found himself away from him. Gabriel Agreste was one of the richest men in Paris as he was a world class famous fashion designer. He made it a point to remind everyone in Paris of that. He threw elaborate parties throughout the season and forced Adrien to be present in every single one. His father always had the ambition that eventually one of these women dancing in the ball would be his future wife. He didn't really care to know any of them. Most conversations with the men were basic competitions about who had the most money, power, and influence in the room and most conversations with the women were basic competitions on what woman was the most dressed and the most beautiful. He felt like he was suffocating. After the last of the guests were inside. He found himself sneaking into the upper level of the home. There was a balcony where he could escape and catch some air. Frustrated, he stared into the night sky. The full moon was out, behind the Eiffel Tower, illuminating the city of Paris. Not that it needed it. The city glowed with life on its own. Regardless, Adrien could appreciate the beauty on nights such as this. His small repose was then interrupted when he heard the glass door open, and slam shut. In front of him he noticed the young woman leaning against the door trying to catch her breath.
Marinette Dupain Cheng stepped into the large home wearing a simple crimson gown. It was a mermaid shaped dress that fit her body to perfection outlining her body. She wore elbow long gloves, two small black earrings, she quickly grabbed the w
black open toe heals her friend Alta had lent her. There was no glitter or frills. No expensive diamonds hanging from her ears and neck. Her raven black hair was combed in a messy bun tied together with a matching ribbon. She wore the signature black mask that was given to each of the invited guests. Although she was cordially invited by her boss Gabriel Agreste in order to talk about business with one of their clients she was instructed not to mingle with his guestS. Gabriel did not want to talk about business on this important night, however the customer was insistent since it was the last minute and a very important design. Dressed in the most formal things she could find in her closet, she found herself at the Agreste Manor. She had noticed earlier that the young Adrien Agreste was greeting everyone at the door. She noticed something in his eyes; however, she did not go through the main entrance. Nathalie was waiting for her through the side entrance for the staff. Marinette followed her quietly as she was taken passed security and the busy staff. Smiling, she took everything with wonder. The expensive cuisine, the thousands of cups being filled with red wine.
"Mr. Agreste has found himself in a bit of time setback. Please wait in his office while he takes care of his guest. May I remind you that you are not to leave this room or interact with anyone in the hall." Nathalie, his personal assistant adjusted her eyes as she reminded her before she disappeared. Marinette found herself sitting in the large office in a black leather chair as she waited. She could hear the jazz music playing lively in the distance and the rich aromas filled her nostrils. She stood up and slowly walked towards the door to peek. She stepped into the hallway behind a large statue and her eyes wandered across the large ballroom. The lights that were dimmed reflected on all the woman's jewelry making the room seem bright and enchanting. It was breath taking. Her eyes sparkled with delight and interest. She wanted to see more. She tried to make it carefully behind a group of women who were talking about the young heir to the Agreste fortune. Marinette tried to be careful and tried not to catch any unnecessary attention. Unfortunately, she was not used to walking in heels. She accidentally tripped, tipping a waiter in passing, spilling fifteen wine glasses on his tray. Some of the cups spilled into the group of girls. She recognized the woman the wine had landed on. She had just ruined the mayor's daughter, Chloé Bourgeois' golden dress.
"Oh my God! Look where you are going you idiot!" Her eyes were burning with fury, and she began to direct her anger towards Marinette. She screamed and apology, but it was too late, Chloé launched at her screaming. Marinette knew this was a disaster and if Gabriel saw her out here, she was good as fired. Panicked, she dodged Chloé, and she ran. She heard the shouts after her, "After her you idiots! DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM!? DADDY!", Marinette knew she needed to stay close to the office but was too scared to stay behind. So she kept running. She found herself fleeing up a fight of stairs and into the first door she saw. She didn't realize she had ended up on a small private balcony where green eyes met her cerulean.
Adrien could not take off his eyes off the strange woman in front of him. Her small frame clinging to the door. He noticed her mask so he knew she was not a party crasher but he had never seen her before. As a matter of a fact he choice in clothing alone would have caught his attention and his breath if he had seen her at the door. Had she arrived late? Or he simply missed her? No. He would of not missed her. Although she was trying to catch her breath as if she had been running away from something he was absolutely stunning. He could see curiosity behind that mask. Her warm eyes inviting adventure in. Inviting him. She looked at him and she bashfully smiled. That sweet innocent smile brought out and excitement he has never get before. She was breathtaking. He seemed to forget all the education and articulate vocabulary his father had made sure he learned. He was nervous. He managed to state a simple hello.
"Hello" she sheepishly stated as she straightened herself and she adjusted her dress. She didn't know where to go. The small private balcony was did not allow for much as an escape and she knew that if she went back through that door she would find herself face to face with a very angry blonde. So she forced herself to make the best of the situation. She looked at the stranger before her. He was handsome but most likely as Stuck up as everyone down at that party. Assuming he was another guest of Gabriel she gave a curt bow and she extended her hand to shake it. He didn't respond. Typical rich man she thought. It was hard to even hold a conversation with her boss let alone with everyone in this party. She sighed as she walked passed the quiet man and she leaned against the stone balcony. She felt the evening chill go through her. Her eyes landed on the moon. She smiled yet again. She felt the stranger shift next to her. He was now leaning against the stone balcony, staring at the same direction as she was.
"its breath taking." She stated. She knew there would be no reply. She needed to find a way out of the situation. She looked around and found a large pipe leading straight down the garden. She pushed passed him and pulled on it trying to figure out of she could use it to escape back down to Gabriel's office. She felt his eyes on her. Studying her carefully. She ignored him. She proceeded to take off her heels and she dropped them down. He stood there surprised. She climbed the balcony and turned back at him one more time as she smiled. This time around he returned her smile. His smile caught her by surprised she almost lost her balance. She closed her eyes as she felt herself lose balance. She waited for the impact but it never came. He had caught her by her waist. She looked down at his face.
Adrien's was not sure why but he needed to know more about this woman. He needed to know her. He wanted to have her. He was not sure what was to come next but he climbed the balcony and stood a few feet from her. He gestured for her to proceed and as she climbed down, he followed her. This was the first time he felt truly alive. Truly free. When he made it down she was already putting her shoes back on. She was about to leave him there in the gardens alone when he grabbed her gloved hand and brought it to his lips. He gently kissed it. There were no words that needed to be spoken. He saw her face turned a few shades of pink. The music could now be heard down from the ballroom. He didn't know what came over him but he pulled her closer to him. Both eyes met. Her pink full lips parted in Surprise. As the best became louder her adjusted himself and began to lead her into a dance. Hands locked into each other. Bodies intertwined he danced with her even if he did not pay attention to the music. The music in his heart played louder. He could feel her heart pounding in her chest. The same beat that beat on his. Their faces came closer and he reached down to kiss her. She accepted the kiss and at that moment he knew it. This woman would be his forever. He deepened the kiss and she passionately replied. It was as if both of them needed each other to survive. The loneliness he felt in his heart slowly melted away. He was in love. As soon as he came back from reality he noticed the music had stopped playing and he slowly heard his father talking near the garden doors looking for a so called Marinette. They both stopped in their tracks. He smiles at her and placed his finger to be quiet. He then pulled further into the gardens away from the doors and windows.
"Mr. Agreste is going to kill me." She whispered. He looked at her curiosity.
"Why?" he asked. She then went to proceed to tell him the story. She stumbled every word nervous and she moved her hands as she told her story. Her eyes were very expressive. She finished by telling him she disobeyed her orders and she would most likely get fired. He listened to her patiently and found himself smiling at her naturally at her silliness. She tried to move back towards to the house but he stopped her.
"What's your name?" he managed to whisper. He hears her apologize and state her name. That's right. He's heard that name before. Earlier that day he had overheard his father talking to Nathalie about her. The brilliant upcoming designer who had just started working for the company. A complete klutz with a humble background.
"Don't leave. Stay with me." He said. She looked at him. Hard. She looked like she was calculating some kind of reason why she had to go back. He pulled her closer again and kissed her. He wanted to erase that idea from her head. She silently stood there staring at him.
"My name is Adrien Agreste" He smiled.
Marinette fell back to reality as soon as she heard his name. She should have never left the office. Now she was hiding in the garden with the only son and heir to the Agreste fortune. Now more than ever she needed to leave. She should not be here. She had been caught by the moment when he had caught her fall and had escaped down with her. The embracing dance, the stolen kisses. It had all been magical. Magical and foolish. They were only strangers in the night. Under the moonlight in Paris. Nothing more and yet she could not help herself in staying with him. As much as she wanted to run in the other direction she found herself looking into his pleading eyes. She chose to stay. Her dreams and career be damned. She felt her heart respond to his touch. He was reaching out his hand in front of her inviting her to be closer.
"Take my hand" he stated. She accepted it and they found themselves dancing the entire night to their own tune. Love had just been a glance away and it have turned out so right. At that moment both in each other's arms realized one thing – they will be in love forever.
The end.
