Sam was the first to recover from the initial shock of facing her father.
"Dad, what are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here? What are you doing? I came to see you Sam. You didn't feel so well the last time we saw each other and I promised to come to visit soon."
"How much did you hear?"
"I didn't hear anything, I just came to witness your intimate gesture with your CO. Sam, are you nuts? I don't have to aks you Jack, because of you being nuts I'm sure."
"Jacob,..."
"I'm talking to my daughter here, Jack."
"I know Jacob but this isn't the place we should have this conversation. We were about to leave the base. So let's head home, have something to eat and talk."
"Come on Dad." Sam said, grabbing her father by his arm and leading him to the elevator.
The ride up to the surface was a silent one.
Sam's eyes were searching for Jack's, who responded with a reassuring nod and a gentle smile.
At the parking spot they went to Jack's car where Sam took his keys. She needed to drive, to occupy herself. She gave Jack an apologetic look, but he understood.
A confused Jacob took the seat behind Jack, so that he could watch his daughter from the side. He didn't dare to say a word, there was so much what he wanted to say but Selmak involved him in a silent conversation. "Be silent Jacob, let them tell you what they need to tell you and listen. There is a reason for everything. Don't be rude and let them explain."
He sighed heavily but didn't say a word.
He wondered where his daughter was headed because this environment wasn't the one were she lived. She parked the car in front of a single storey dark wooden house. He has been here before. It was Jack's house.
They climbed up the stairs to the front door which Jack had already opened.
"Come in Jacob, take a seat in the living room. Want something to drink?"
"Water please." was the only thing Jacob managed to say.
"If it's ok I would like to quickly change out of my BDUs. And then we can talk, Dad." Sam said, giving her father no opportunity to answer because she already left in the direction of what Jacob thought was the master bedroom.
Jack returned with a glass of water "Here's your drink Jacob, I'll just start with the dinner and will join you when Sam returns. Feel free to wandering around."
"Thank you Jack. No offense, but I really would like to know what's going on here."
"You will, soon." with that he turned around and busied himself in the kitchen while making dinner.
Jacob took a sip of the water and stepped out onto the terrace. Fresh air would do him some good.
Meanwhile Sam had changed into a pair of jeans and a simple white shirt. She stood in the doorway of the kitchen and observed Jack. How she got so lucky to carry his child she didn't know but would never question it. There was still a lot to talk about but they had all the time to do so.
One thing Sam was sure about was that her house never felt like home. Here she felt it, and that was the moment she decided this was the place she would like to raise their child.
Feeling observed Jack turned around only to see Sam smiling, deep in thaughts.
As she met his gaze, she took a few steps forward and pulled him into a warm embrace. He instinctively wrapped his arms around her, deepening the embrace with tenderness.
Her face fitted perfectly in the croke of his neck.
"What's on your mind Carter? Afraid of Dad?"
"No, he'll understand. Of that I'm sure. I was just thinking I could be very happy here."
"That's what I hope Sam."
"You don't understand Jack. I mean here. Here with you and our little one. I'm not really fond of my house. It never was a home, only a beautiful house. But here, it feels like home. What I'm trying to say is, and please feel free to say no because it's a big step..."
"No rambling Sam, say what you want to say. Even when I've got an idea what your trying to say."
"I would love to live here Jack."
A big smile spread across his face.
"So you wanna move in with me?"
"I'd love to Jack."
Not sure what he did to deserve this beautiful woman but he would never ever let her go.
"Now that we found out where to live. Let's go outside and face your dad. He must be freaking out by now."
Outside Jacob was standing at the banister. He turned as he heard the two stepping out to him.
"So, care to share the story?"
"Yes Dad, let's take a seat and we'll tell you. First let me say I'm all ok, I know you were worried because I didn't feel well the last time we saw each other. And that's... Oh dear... I don't know where to start."
Jack took over trying to explain the whole situation.
"You remember our mission on that ice planet?"
"The one where you got your minds stamped?"
"Yes, we didn't know who we where but we sort of gravitated towards each other. They could erase our memories but what they couldn't erase were our feelings. We didn't know that it was wrong, but as soon as your memories returned and as we were coming home it was clear that what happened on that planet we had to leave it there. We were ok with that. We'd done it before, I'm sure you're aware of our Za'tarc test."
"I am aware. What are you two trying to say? Why now acting like the rules don't exist?"
Sam summoned her courage:
"Something happened on that planet we hadn't thought of. I'm pregnant, Dad!"
Silence, you could hear a pin drop.
"You're what?" Jacob nearly screamed.
Oh boy, that was the reaction Sam had waited for.
"Jacob, please calm down. I know what you're thinking but there will be no court martial. Let us explain."
"I don't want to hear it Jack, that's the way you're looking out for my little girl??? What a commanding officer are you?"
He stormed down the terrace into the backyard. He needed time to process what he'd just heard.
Jack turned to Sam an squeezed her hand.
"Go after him Sam, explain, he will listen. He's just a father who is worried sick about his little girl. And let's face it I'm not the son in law one would want for his daughter. But he'll come around and he will be looking forward to his grandchild. I'll finish dinner and then we can eat. Maybe it wasn't the best idea having this conversation on an empty stomach."
"Thank you Jack. Don't sell yourself to short. Anyone could be lucky to have you as a son in law. There's no one else I would want to have as daddy for my children."
With that she went to see her father and Jack went inside.
