Sam found Jacob sitting on the bench at the end of Jack's backyard.
"Is this seat taken?" she asked playfully.
"I'm sorry for my outburst. Sit down."
"Dad, please let me speak. Listen what I have to say, ok?"
"Ok kiddo."
"First of all I'd like to think that even with no memories it says a lot that we found each other. That these are really deep feelings and not just a fling. After coming home I felt nauseated, dizzy and light headed, but it never came to my mind that I could be pregnant. As Janet found out I was so scared, not of becoming a mother and surely not of who the father was. I was scared that these short moments could destroy our careers and that we would have to face a court-martial. But General Hammond and the President were great. They claimed it happened unter alien influence. With my pregnancy I wouldn't be allowed off world anyway so I took over the science department. Out of Jack's command, so that we're able to pursue a personal relationship. We haven't talked much about what we're going to do now, but we are happy, Dad."
"So no court-martial?"
"No."
"That's good news. My little girl's pregnant. I'm going to be a grandfather again? How do you feel Sam? Is everything ok?"
"Everything is fine. I can't eat much at the moment, nothing stays in for a long time. But eventually it will get better. Your grandchild is healthy a far as Janet could tell."
"Wow, I'm a little speechless. Congratulations Sam. You'll be a wonderful mother!" he turned towards his daughter to embrace her in a deep hug.
"But Sam, Jack O'Neill??? Really?"
And for the first time that day Sam had to laugh out loud.
"Must I remind you that you like him, Dad?"
"No, I like him. But I never imagined him as the father of my grandchild. Otherwise you two always had something special. Sure you know what you got yourself into. Two O'Neills running around, the kid will be half a Carter so there's hope."
"Wouldn't want it any other way. Come on, let's eat. I'm sure Jack will be ready by now."
Taking her father's hand the two made their way back inside the house.
Sam busied herself with setting the table while Jacob entered the kitchen.
Jack stopped with what he was doing and faced his friend.
Jacob observed him for a moment and let out a deep breath.
Hugging Jack he told him: "Congratulations Jack. I'm sincerely happy for you. Please take good care of my girl!"
"Thank you! She doesn't need anybody to take care of her, but I'll always be there for her and look after her. Jacob, I think you should know that I love her."
"That's all a father wants for his daughter."
"Maybe not right now. But someday I would like to aks her to marry me, do I have your blessing to do so?"
"Of course Jack. I can't think of a better match for Sam."
"Thanks Dad! And now let's eat before it gets cold."
They enjoyed the evening together. Jacob told them about his plans to go to visit Mark and his family. The Tok'ra granted him a few weeks of leave, so he would be staying 3 weeks in San Diego.
The next day Sam drove her father to the airport and then went to work. Not a bad life at all.
Jack strolled into Sam's lab.
"Hey Carter."
"Sir!" that earned her an amused look from Jack.
"Sorry, habit. What can I do for you?"
"It's lunchtime and Daniel and Teal'c are waiting in the commissary."
"Ok, just let me quickly save my work."
As she shut down her computer, Sam turned towards the door. Jack gently guided her out into the corridor, placing his hand at the small of her back with a comforting presence.
Spotting Daniel and Teal'c at their usual table, they made their way over and grabbed their food before settling down in front of their closest friends.
"Hey guys, there you are. Jack have you told Sam the news already?"
Sam looked at Jack confused.
"Gee, thank you Daniel. No I haven't had the chance to tell her. What Daniel carefully was trying to say is that we have a mission coming up tomorrow. For now Captain Jeffrey will accompany us on our missions. We'll see how that works out."
Sam knew that day would come sooner rather than later, but the reality hit her harder than expected. While she was able to perceive it rationally, navigating through her emotions was a different story altogether. She attributed these emotional strains to fluctuating hormones.
"It's just an overnight mission Sam, we'll be back before you'll know."
"It's ok, it just took me by surprise, that's all. I think Captain Jeffrey is a perfect match. I've worked with Annie a few times in the lab. But she's also a promising officer. Don't make it to hard for her guys. When are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow at 0800."
Having finished her plate she stood up to take it back.
"Ok, than I'd say I will head back to my lab, try to get some work done and you can pick me up at 1800 Jack. See you tomorrow morning Daniel, Teal'c. I'll come to see you off."
"I would be very pleased Major Carter."
"Yeah, see you tomorrow, Sam."
As Sam had left Daniel turned to Jack.
"So that went better as expected. How do you feel about it, Jack?"
"It's just a two day trip, and a safe trip on top. We'll manage. It's my job Dannyboy, but yes it's difficult now that I'm not only leaving her behind. When we're back we need you two help us moving Sam's stuff into my house." He had a bright smile on his face, as had Daniel.
