"What Was/ What Should Have Been"

(Quality Time Version Spencer's Mea Culpa)

Trina's attempt at "quality time" with Spencer did not have its intended results. Esme constantly interrupted Spencer and Trina in the living room, under the guise of needing Spencer's help with Ace or needing something from the living room. Once Trina realized that quality time was not going to happen, she kissed Spencer and headed to the door. Before she left, she watched as Spencer sang Ace his lullaby, while Esme smiled adoringly. Trina closed the door behind her, sighed, and left.

That's how it happened. But how about this?

Since Trina had optimistically told Joss that her planned quality time with Spencer might run late and she wouldn't want to wake up Donna, she informed Joss that she would crash at her mother's that night. Unfortunately, things did not as she had planned.

By the time Trina arrived at home from Laura's, she had cried more tears than she would ever want anyone to see. So, before going in, she wiped her eyes and face, checked to make sure that there were no visible signs of the crying that she had done, and headed to the front door. Fortunately, or rather unfortunately, since "date night" was cut short, no one was home, so she able to go straight to her room.

Meanwhile, once Spencer had gotten Ace to fall asleep and put him to bed, he headed upstairs to his room.

"Spencer, you idiot! You're going to blow it. You had the girl who it took you two years to finally convince to have you in her life bring a date night to you, and you, what? You blow it!" Spencer thought to himself, as he couldn't stop beating himself up over how Trina's attempt to spend time with him had failed because of him. "How can I ever fix this with Trina? She did not deserve what she got," Spencer continued thinking. After brooding and thinking for a moment, he had an idea. He quickly sent a text and after just a little while, he received a response. "Yes!" Spencer said excitedly.

As soon as Trina had gotten ready for bed, she heard her phone. When she grabbed it, she saw that it was Spencer. For a brief moment, she contemplated ignoring it, but thought better of that idea. While in Greenland, they had pledged that they were in this together. Trina was determined to keep that pledge.

"Hi, Spencer. Is there anything wrong?" she asked blandly, not letting on how sad she had been.

"Hi. Yes, what's wrong is that I'm an idiot. I had the most beautiful woman in town bring a date night to me personally, and I blow it. Trina, I am so sorry. Can you forgive me?" Spencer asked anxiously.

Although she only paused momentarily, Trina's silence seemed to last forever to Spencer.

"It's o-", Trina started.

"Please do not say that it's ok Trina, because it's not. You went out of your way to do something for me and because of me, it went bust," Spencer said regretfully. You have put yourself last so many times for me and Ace-and, by proxy, Esme, as well. The psychopath who drugged you and framed you! Plus, she was rude to you and I just let it slide. So, please do not say it's ok. Because you are the sweetest and kindest person that I know, you tolerate it for me, which means the world to me. But, don't say it's ok," Spencer said emphatically.

"Alrighty then, it's not ok," Trina said with a slight laugh. This meant so much to her. "So, now that that's cleared up, what has led to this call? I thought you were getting Ace down?" Trina asked.

"He finally went down and I'm in my room. Remember, I told you before you left that I would call you tomorrow and set up an actual date?" Spencer replied.

"Yes, I remember," Trina answered.

"Well, I know that it's not already tomorrow, but I felt so bad that I wanted to get the ball rolling tonight. If that's ok?" Spencer asked, suddenly unsure how all of this was going to go over with Trina.

"It's more than ok," Trina said, her spirits lifting by the minutes.

"For our first official date as an official couple, may I have the honor of your presence for a date tomorrow night?" Spencer asked hopefully.

"You may. It won't be at your grandmother's will it?" she asked innocently, but oh so seriously.

"Absolutely not! But the location will not be revealed until tomorrow evening, Miss Robinson," Spencer said.

"Ok, well can you at least let me know how I should dress for our first official date as an official couple?" Trina asked with no hint of sadness in her voice.

"Dress for romance. Does that help?" Spencer asked.

"Dress for romance? Hmm. I can do that," she said.

"Great, until tomorrow evening," Spencer said.

"Until tomorrow evening. Good night, Spencer."

"Good night, Trina.

Despite not getting much sleep after speaking with Trina (Ace had a very fussy night), Spencer was determined to give Trina the best first official date ever given to anyone. So after he finished his third or fourth cup of coffee after seeing Laura off, he sent out a few more texts and made a few more phone calls. As each one finished, Spencer grew more and more excited.

"This date is going to be epic," he thought to himself. Two of the calls had been to both Martin and Lucy, the back-up Laura had designated for Spencer and Esme. Their part in his plan was key-they would be "him" for Esme that night. He could not afford to have Esme or Ace derail this date night. Going along with that train of thought, Spencer had sworn them to secrecy. He had seen through all of Esme's attempt to interrupt his and Trina's time together. He was not an idiot, at least not in this instance, contrary to popular belief.

"Trina's whole mood from last night had changed. She was so excited to get ready for her big night. She had asked Joss's opinion about what to wear. Although she valued her bestie's opinion, she went with an outfit that she had purchased soon after returning from Greenland. One day while window-shopping, she had seen something that she knew that Spencer would appreciat seeing her in, some day.

"I have to admit. You were right to ignore my opinion. You look absolutely gorgeous! Spencer might not be able to handle it," Joss said upon seeing Trina emerge.

"Do you really think so?" Trina asked.

"No question," Joss replied.

At that moment, the doorbell rang and Trina went to answer it, expecting Spencer. However, a neatly dressed driver was standing at the door.

"Miss Robinson?" he asked.

"Yes, I'm Trina Robinson," Trina replied.

Mr. Cassadine has arranged for me to transport you to meet him tonight," the driver informed her.

"Ok...I think," Trina said somewhat unsure. At that moment, Trina received a text from Spencer, verifying the identity of the driver, who would be bringing Trina to their date destination. After reading the text, she smiled sweetly. "He knows me so well-he knew that I would want to be sure of a strange man coming to pick me up. Yep, he's definitely a keep," Trina thought.

Trina just sat back in the seat of the car and waited anxiously to get to her final destination. She remembered how excited both she and Spencer were when they declared that they were "Together" the night of the Nurses' Ball-and after that, so much had happened. But, it looked like they were about to turn a huge corner tonight and she couldn't have been more happy about that.

After a short drive, the driver pulled up to a familiar place-the Metro Court. However, the car stopped at the entrance to the pool, and Trina waited. As she waited, she saw Spencer emerge. She couldn't believe what she was seeing coming towards her car door.

"Wait until he sees me," she thought. They had not talked or texted about their attire. Yet, somehow they were completely coordinated, akin to a matching pair. It was obvious that that day at Pentonville, or more specifically Trina's attire, had left an impression on them both.

For Spencer, when he entered the visiting area at Pentonville, he was struck by Trina's presence of course, and then by that gorgeous purple top, unzipped just enough to send his mind racing. He could never get the vision of her in that top out of his head. That was also the day that he realized what a chance Trina took for him by putting her feelings for him out on the line. So, in choosing his attire, he knew that purple had to play a role.

Trina, too, had reflected on that day when she had purchased what had caught her eye after their return from Greenland.

Spencer looked handsome and like the man of her dreams. His hair was a little out of place, on purpose; he knew that she liked that. His top was, of course, purple. The sleeves were rolled up to expose the veins in his muscular arms, while the first two buttons of his tucked in dress shirt were unbuttoned-teasing a slight hint of his toned chest. His pants were black and belted and fit him just so. Shiny black dress shoes completed his look.

Finally, Spencer arrived at the car and opened the door. Trina extended her hand. Spencer was so pleased to see those shiny red nails emerge, as he took her hand to help her out of the car. But that was nothing compared to what he saw when Trina fully emerged from the car. Spencer Cassadine was gobsmacked! Trina was an absolute vision. She had on the most gorgeous purple sequined mini dress, which showed off her amazing and toned legs and arms. Her hair, styled as it was the night of their faux New Year's Eve date, flowed down over her shoulders. He loved seeing it that way. He had felt so close to her that night as he carefully helped her put on his jacket and took great care with her hair. The purple heels she wore were an extra compliment to the rest of her outfit.

As if twin-souls, "I love your purple," they said in unison. Neither had to explain their choice-somehow they both knew what had inspired their choice.

"You look so very beautiful tonight, Trina. Thank you for being my date," Spencer said as he offered her his arm.

"Thank you for this night and for looking so dapper," Trina responded.

They walked arm-in-arm to the pool area, where somehow it had been magically transformed into something out of a movie. There were soft lights adorning much of the furniture and decor. Additionally, there was a candlelit table alongside the pool and soft music was playing in the background.

"Spencer, this looks incredible! How...who did this?" Trina asked.

"I can't believe that you don't think that I did this all by myself!" Spencer teased.

"You forgot, Miss Robinson, that my uncle is engaged to the co-owner of this establishment-and let's just say strings were pulled. Only the best was going to do for you," Spencer said sweetly. "Shall we?" he continued as he walked her to their table. After pulling her chair out for her, Spencer went to his chair and sat.

A server came out with two glasses of sparkling water, which they used to toast the night.

"Here's to the best official first date ever," Trina said. "You've outdone yourself, Spencer."

"You ain't seen nothing yet!" Spencer promised as he gave her a wink.

"Shall we dance?" he asked as rose and reached his hand out to her.

"It would be my pleasure," Trina said.

As the music played, Spencer and Trina got lost in each others' eyes. He took a chance and slowly pulled Trina closer to him, so close that it was as if their heartbeats were ready to meld into one. She felt so comfortable in his arms. She felt safe. She felt...loved. Spencer felt at home with Trina. With her, he knew he had a comfortable space, a safe place, a place of...love.

At that moment, it was as if they could read each others' minds, feel each others' hearts. As the music continued to play in the background, they both stopped, stepped back, and looked into each others' eyes.

"I love you," they said in unison. "I love you, too," again in unison. With that, Trina pulled Spencer's face towards her-grabbing his neck to bring him in for a kiss. Their lips met and they kissed. They stopped, looked at each other, and then returned to the each other's lips. As they kissed, their hands began exploring each other. Her hand wrapped around his neck, while his hands slowly made their way to her waist, where he gave her a little squeeze. This ignited a feeling from Trina that she had never felt before. However, it was a feeling that she did not mind. From there, his hands continued to move ever so slowly, until they found themselves caressing Trina's lower back area and below. He didn't take time to question whether or not he should, he just did and it felt like the right thing to do. She did not attempt to move away. The placement of his hands only caused her to become more eager and aggressive with her kisses, which got wetter and sloppier as they continued. Between the soft, tender touches and the beyond passionate kisses, the excitement between Spencer and Trina grew quite palpable. Just as it had been on Valentine's Day, Spencer stopped abruptly and spoke.

"There's still dinner left to eat, if you're hungry? The servers are set to bring it out once we return to the table."

"Well, I'm hungry, but not for anything that those servers are going to bring out," Trina said seductively.

Spencer was feeling warmer by the second and it had nothing to do with the temperature outside.

"Spencer, did you hear what I said?" Trina asked.

"Uh, yes. I most certainly did. Does that mean that...?" he started.

"It means that I want you to make love to me. I want to feel every part of your body on every part of my body. I want you to be the person who makes me feel things that I've never felt before," Trina said as sincerely as possible, while keeping her eyes locked on Spencer the whole time.

"Well, a suite has been reserved for us upstairs. So, I think that means we'll be taking care of your hunger up there, instead of at the dinner table," Spencer said as he kissed Trina once more.

With that, Spencer took Trina's hand and they walked inside. The dining area of the Metro Court was empty, so they took their time getting to the elevator. On the ride up, they couldn't take their hands or mouths off of each other. They were setting the stakes high for what was to come once they entered their suite.

Once Spencer opened the door, both he and Trina were taken aback by what they saw. The floor, as well as the bed, was adorned with lavendar rose petals. The lights were down low and there were candles ready to be lit. As an added touch, arranged by his special Metro Court connection-no doubt-there were sets of sleepwear on the bed for both Spencer and Trina.

"Looks like we're all set to take this first official date to the ultimate level," Spencer said encouragingly.

"Looks like it," Trina said.

"Um, would you like to go in the bathroom and change?" he asked.

"Well, I could, but why go change, just to come back out and take it off again?" Trina asked plainly.

"You have a point," Spencer agreed. But before we go any farther, I need to do two things," he said, as he walked her to the bed and they sat. "First, I want again to say I love you, I've loved you, and I will always love you," Spencer's voice was shaky with emotion. Trina held his hands gently while he spoke. "Second, I have something for you." He reached for a box that he had left in the suite on the nightstand before he had gone down to the pool area.

"I want you to know that you have my heart and that you've always had my heart. So, to symbolize that, I want you to have this. He opened the box and took out the dove he had been given by Cyrus at Pentonville.

"Spencer, it's beautiful. I'll cherish it forever, just as I will cherish and love you forever," Trina said sweetly, as her voice trembled with emotion, as well.

He pulled the other dove out and said that he would keep that dove. Together, his dove and her dove would represent their love together.

With that he put both doves side by side back on the nightstand. The moment was near. Spencer got up and lit the candles that had been arranged around the room.

"Now, the stage is all set. Are you ready?" Spencer asked, holding Trina's hands, while caressing her fingers.

"I've been ready," Trina said confidently.

He removed the sleepwear meant for them and placed them in a nearby chair.

"Let me know if at anytime you change your mind. We have time," Spencer said reassuringly.

"My mind's not changing," Trina said.

She sat down and began to remove her heels. Spencer bent down and slowly took over- taking her foot out of the first heel, and then doing the same for the second heel that she was wearing. Once her shoes were removed, he carefully placed them to the side. He took one of Trina's feet in his hands and began massaging it, slowly. Trina let out a slow moan. Then, he took the other foot and began giving it the same attention he had given the other one.

Wanting to reciprocate, Trina reached for the first of Spencer's buttons needing to be unbuttoned. This time, unlike on Valentines' Day, he did not stop her. He watched her as she carefully unbuttoned the remaining buttons and untucked his shirt from his pants. Her final act was to remove the shirt. Trina wanted to let Spencer know how much she wanted him and that she was ready, so she put her hands on his chest and moved them along his chest seductively, or at least she hoped that it was.

Spencer now wanted to take charge. He stood up, towering over Trina, and removed first-his belt, then, his pants-all the while never taking his eyes off of Trina. He returned to the bed and laid Trina down onto the bed. He loved at her lovingly and said, "I love you." "I love you, too," Trina said.

He laid on top of her, grasped her hands and said, "Do you want me as much as I want you? Tell me you feel the same way."

Trina looked him directly in the eyes and said, "I want you even more."

With that, they began kissing once more. The room suddenly filled with sounds of wet and hungry kissed and soft moans from the both of them. At a certain point, Spencer took his hand and raised Trina up. No words were said. He took his hand and pulled down the strap of her dress, then he did the same with the other strap. With his next move, they would move on to the next level of their love. Spencer kept his eyes on Trina's eyes making sure that she was still on board with the journey that they were about to begin. She gave no indication that she wanted to stop. Their time had finally come. Spencer put both hands on either side of her and pulled her dress down to the floor. She looked amazing-he was in awe. "My God, you're beautiful," Spencer said softly. Trina just smiled and said, "You, too."

They kissed softly, as he removed the remaining articles of her clothing. She again reciprocated by finishing his undressing. They turned back the sheets on the bed and got in. Spencer opened the nightstand drawer to remove a necessary item of protection for this momentous step they were about to take.

Trina, wanting to know all of him, kept her eyes on him as he completed his task. Once he was done, he got on top of her and moved with the greatest of ease until she indicated to him that she could take even more. Their hands explored each others' bodies as they delighted in their bodies being joined in passion. As their love-making reached its highest peak, they held on to each other as if they wanted to become one and freeze that very special moment in time. That would only be the first of many times that night where their love-making would bring them to the heights of ecstasy and their love for each other. After each time, Spencer asked Trina the same thing. "Are you ok?" And each time, she answered, "With you, how could I not be?"

As they decided that the time had finally come to go to sleep, the twin souls looked into each others' eyes and Spencer said, "Well, Trina Robinson, what did you think of our first official date as an official couple?"

Trina, with a smile on her face, replied, "It was epic, Spencer Cassadine. Just epic."
