It seems like I just closed my eyes when a knock comes at the door. My eyes are bleary but I see Ladybug peek her head in the room, and then she takes a running leap onto my bed. "Gotcha!" She sings, her long hair cascading down her shoulders. I smile. "One thing's for sure, I'd rather have you bouncing on the bed then a shrill alarm clock." When I was younger, my clock always scared me, so loud was the alarm, though I guess that was the point.
"Get up, Kitty. Felix wants us to meet him right away. I even brought you a cup of coffee." It just takes a couple of minutes to comb my hair and I like the way Ladybug curls into a knot as we both stand in the mirror.
Felix is waiting for us outside of the many doors in this house. Kagami stands beside him, in a light yellow summer dress. "Cat Noir, come with me. We need to equip you on your journey to find Hawkmoth." "Don't worry, I'll give Ladybug back soon," Kagami reassures me. "I trust you. Have fun."
Felix opens the door with brass key and I gasp as I walk in. So many fencing sabers to choose from, and my fingers itch to try one out. I was one of the best fencers in my class back in my younger days, though these days, I'm pretty rusty. "Choose one that best fits you." I test each one, giving it a few flicks, I know that if I choose the wrong one, I'll be carrying extra weight. Medical supplies, ration kits go into a sturdy woven backpack. "That fencing saber is sharp, Cat. Not only will you be able to use if a foe comes near, but it will come in handy for hunting too." "Hunting?" I ask, my throat growing dry. Sure, I have the power of destruction, but I don't want to kill anything. "Berries and veggies only last so long, Cat. And there won't always be a stream full of fish nearby. Speaking of…." Felix adds a few last minutes things to my bag, just as Kagami and Ladybug walk back into the room.
"Your both ready now. Good. We'll join you for breakfast and be on our way." I peer at Ladybug. "My Love, is that a set of bow and arrows?" "Don't worry, Cat. Hopefully, I won't have to use them." She looks ravishing and powerful.
Breakfast is a quick affair and then Felix and Kagami lead us outside into the cool morning air. "Take care of each other. And defeat Hawkmoth. He might of destroyed Paris, but other cities are sure to be next on his list."
Ladybug makes a portal and we step through, and immediately my eyes start burning and watering. Smoke is still thick, black clouds in the air and a fine powdery ash lies beneath our feet. "This way," Ladybug takes my hand, and we set off at a quick pace to not inhale to much smoke.
"Can you lift this pothole lid?" Ladybug asks. On the count of three, we lift it together and Ladybug starts to climb down into the sewers. Though the air doesn't smell of smoke down here, I clamp a finger to my nose at the festering smell of the green water.
Ladybug leads me deep into the swevers to a hidden room. "This is where I hid the Miracle Box. The box will stay here and I'll put the Miraculous in my yo-yo. Guard the door, will you?" I nod, and keep watch for a undecided shadow, who knows what kind of people are helping Hawkmoth.
Ladybug exits quickly, shutting the door behind her. "Cat, I'm going to see what's left of my home and see if I grab a few things. I'd advise you to do the same. Let's meet at the Eiffel Tower in fifteen minutes." We do a quick pound it and we both exit the sewer together.
But just as we're putting the cover down, Ladybug dive tackles me and rolls. A burning beam of wood sits blazing in the street, and even though where not close to it, we can both feel the heat. Ladybug is breathing quickly, and we stare into each others eyes. "You just saved my life." "You would have done the same for me, Kitten. Now, hurry!"
I trot down the cobblestone path towards the Agreste Mansion, and launch myself into the courtyard using my baton. The mansion is free from fire, but when I enter my old room via the old the room is filled with smoke. There's not much here that holds any significant value but I have to find the Lucky Charm Marinette made for me. Its always brought me luck, even as a black cat and with our coming journey into the mountains we can use all the help we can get.
Over time the drawers have become stuck and I have to pull with all my might. Plus, I don't have much time with the smoke swirling around me like a cloak. I start to cough and my eyes are watering, if I don't find the bracelet soon, I'll have to leave it behind.
With my chest burning I give one final tug and there sits the Lucky Charm, unharmed and undamaged. I wrap my fingers around it, and for a second I have a warm feeling spread through me that has nothing to do with the fire or smoke. But now, its time to go, and I spring out the window heading for the Eiffel Tower.
Ladybug isn't here yet, though I can see her faintly in the distance. "Good timing, now, we need to get out of here!"
Once we're on the other side of the portal, she leads me to a big gray rock and hands me a water bottle. "If you need another, tell me. In that kind of heat you can dehydrate quickly."
Funny once she says that, my throat feels all raspy. "I think I inhaled some smoke. Maybe we could make a fire to make tea?" Ladybug looks around, locating the sun. Here on the other side of the world, the sun is already halfway across the sky. "Its to early, Cat. But the water will help. Trust me."
Cold, refreshing water greets my parched throat, and Ladybug has to remind me to slow down not to get sick. She gives me a gentle smile as I hand her the bottle. "Feeling better?" "Much."
The path is dirt-covered and for a time we travel uphill, until we enter the forest, and leave the forest behind. But the birds chirping away sound so happy, and why wouldn't they, for they are free. "Ladybug, what do you think happened during the fire?" Even before she answers, I can picture people running and fleeing for their lifes. "I suppose some we're able to escape the city. Others….were not not so lucky," she says, after a slight pause. I feel a surge of hatred towards Hawkmoth. No jewels are worth precious human life.
We keep moving, lost in our own individual thoughts. The sun sinks towards the horizon, and soon its time to set up camp for the night. "See that group of trees up ahead, Kitty?" I look down the path to see two trees that toppled into each other and nod. "We'll camp there."
We're lucky find a stream nearby, and I volunteer to fish as Ladybug gathers the firewood. We've always been a team and partners, best friends, but not quite lovers. Yes, there is romantic feelings on both sides, but Ladybug has always been careful not to let herself grow to close to anyone.
I'm able to gather two plump fish, and Ladybug finds some berries while looking for firewood. She hits two stones together, until at last a spark catches and we have a fire. The roasting fish smells good, and my mouth begins to water. The meal is delicious and I compliment Ladybug on her cooking.
"Papa made sure there were certain dishes and skills you learned at a early age. Being able to cook a meal over a fire was one of them." You can hear the love for her parents in her voice, and I wish I knew who they were. I feed a few twigs to the fire. "I remember going away to sleep away camp when I was young. I was shy, but I learned a lot." Ladybug giggles. "You? Shy?" "Hard to believe isn't it?"
"I'm shy when I take off my mask," Ladybug reveals. "Though I had friends when I was younger, I always felt like you were the one I was most closet to."
An owl hoots somewhere in the darkness and Ladybug scoots closer to me. "We should be heading to bed, but its nice and cozy here by the fire." "Well, we could play a game," I tell her, grinning in the darkness. "What kind of game?" "Truth Or Dare." Ladybug shifts beside me. "I don't know, Kitty. You know there are some secrets I have to keep." I smile. "Yeah, that you drool when you sleep, and you think I snore." She gives me a playful poke. "You do snore! And how do you know I drool?" "Guess I'll find out, won't I? Now that we're traveling together and all." "So, you want to get started?"
"Let's gather some moss first, it can be used as blankets." Using my baton flashlight, we come to a huge patch of moss but just as I'm bending down, Ladybug gives a little squeak.
"Cat, something just ran over my feet!" My eyes quickly spot a small field mouse on a log, nibbling a at acorn. "Don't tell me your afraid of mice, Bugaboo." "Let's just get in our shelter. Come on!"
Soon, we are curled up together in our shelter and all is quiet. "You ready, Ladybug?" "Let the game begin."
