One Final Flight
Toothless the Night Fury lay nestled in his cave, feeling the weight of his age upon him. His scales had dulled, and his once-mighty wings had grown tired and weary. But there was something more than physical exhaustion that burdened him. It was the ache in his heart, the longing for his dearest friend, Hiccup.
He looked at his tail, the contraption his old friend had made for him was starting to break down and even the smartest dragons here were clueless on how to fix it.
I really gave up a lot. He winced, swallowing the tears as memories of Hiccup came into his head. This tail he made only has a few more flights left in it.
It had been years since they last saw each other. Hiccup had become the chief of Berk, leading his people to a new era of peace and prosperity. Toothless, on the other hand, had found happiness in his own way, starting a family with a beautiful Light Fury. Their relationship had produced three playful little Night Lights, who constantly reminded Toothless of the joy he had found in his life.
But even amidst this happiness, Toothless yearned for the familiar touch of Hiccup's hand, the sound of his laughter, and the adventures they had shared. He missed their midnight flights, the way they had danced together in the skies, and the unbreakable bond they had forged.
It also didn't help that he fulfilled his biological needs and had children then things started to change with his 'beloved'. It was small things at first, she would insist on doing things her way and often used her status as his mate to bully other dragons around for her own benefit and that of her friends.
Along with the fact that she started acting very territorial around him and would isolate him from any dragon she deemed a threat to her influence. Most of them were female dragons who would suffer ostracization if they got too close to him for his wife's liking.
Then there was her constant desire to make him want to forget everything about Hiccup an humanity such as yelling at him for talking to his children about his experiences with Hiccup and looking down on his desire to teach his children to be open minded and not see all humans as enemies.
Stretching his wings he imagined himself with his former friend. Hiccup do you still dream of our adventures like I do?
He was preoccupied with his thoughts that he didn't hear his wife land across from him. "What are you doing this time?"
His body froze as he opened his eyes and saw her gaze. I might as well get over with it. "I miss Hiccup. I wish to see him once more."
The Light Fury's eyes widened, and she turned to face him, her expression stern and unyielding. "Toothless, you know it's not possible. We have a family to take care of, responsibilities to uphold. You cannot simply leave them behind for a fleeting visit."
The venom in her voice stung, he knew she never experienced human companionship like he did. As a result she viewed humanity as an enemy, it was sad that her old ways would never change.
A pang of hurt in his chest, but he refused to back down. "But he was my best friend, my brother. I owe it to him to say goodbye properly, to let him know how much he means to me. I won't be gone long, I'll return I promise."
The Light Fury's eyes softened further, and she stepped closer to him, her voice filled with both love and pain. "Toothless, I know you miss him, but we have built a life together. You have a purpose here. Please, don't throw it all away for a momentary reunion."
He detected a hint of love in her voice, the same she used when they first met to drag him away from the life he knew. If only I thought with the head on my shoulders.
His heart was heavy with conflicting emotions but he couldn't live like this. "I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I didn't mean to burden you with my longing."
The Light Fury's expression softened, and she nuzzled him gently. "You seem tired let me massage you? Forget about those pesky humans."
He brushed her off. "I'm going to rest, I'm tired."
His wife's gaze turned cold. "Fine." She flew off leaving him alone.
You always were threatened by my relationship with Hiccup. I tried to make it work but I don't think I can anymore.
As he rested, memories flooded his mind, both bitter and sweet. He couldn't help but recall the early days of his friendship with Hiccup, when he had discovered the beauty and complexity of the human world. He had learned to value the bond they had formed, bridging the gap between dragons and humans.
But there was a shadow that loomed over those memories – the disapproval of the Light Fury. She had never fully understood Toothless's connection with Hiccup or his appreciation for the human world. From the beginning, she had been wary and distant, unable to comprehend the depth of their friendship.
Toothless couldn't help but feel a pang of regret as he reminisced about the time when he had made the difficult decision to move the dragons away from Berk. In his desire to protect his newfound love, he had inadvertently put his friendship with Hiccup at risk. He had allowed the fear and prejudice of others to influence his judgment, and it had cost him dearly.
"You ok?" Asked a familiar voice.
Turning around he saw Stormfly, the former dragon of Hiccup's mate. "I've been better," he muttered. Stormfly still insisted on a platonic relationship with him even if his own didn't approve of their friendship.
"Let me guess you are thinking of Hiccup again," Stormfly asked.
He nodded. "You ever think of them?"
The female dragon looked up at the sky. "Everyday. Even though I have my own family I wish I could see Astrid just one last time."
He shifted where he lay. "Um do you think I made a mistake brining us here?"
Stormfly looked at him with a calm expression. "It's your wife isn't it?"
He avoided her gaze but Stormfly knew him better. "She never liked you either am I correct?" It was small things at first but he wasn't stupid to the gossip mill of the dragon world.
The female dragon laughed coldly her gaze. "Oh yes she wanted you all to yourself. The big strong alpha. She convinced you to leave Hiccup but she saw me as a threat, why do you think I kept my space from you? Or tell my kids to be cautious around yours?"
She shook her head. "As a mother I couldn't risk my children being put in harms way, your wife never like our friendship and wanted it as gone as your relationship with Hiccup."
He flinched. "I'm sorry. As an alpha I should've done more."
"Like order us into cages?" Stormfly's words made him wince. "You gave up everything we had for a girl you just met and nearly sold us into slavery."
Her words were like a dagger in his heart. True when he first met his wife he was so love struck he used his stance as alpha to order his dragons into slave cages so that his beloved could be saved. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking right."
Stormfly turned around. "Well you are the alpha you make the rules. It was good to know that you would throw away strong relationships for a girl you just met."
She flew off leaving him alone in his thoughts her words luck a sting in his heart. I made a lot of reckless decisions but I know for a fact that me and Hiccup had a bond unlike anything else in this world
"Hey dad you ok?"
Looking up he saw his three kids Dart, Pouncer, and Ruffruner approach him. He gave them a weak smile. "Hello boys I'm just resting."
The three looked at each other before Pouncer stepped forward. "Dad are you thinking of the humans again?"
He flinched not knowing how to respond, he didn't want another fight with his wife and he was getting old.
"It's ok we won't tell mom," Dart said. "We heard the stories from the older generations about humans we know that they aren't all bad."
His words nearly made him tear up. "Boys I once felt a bond that was stronger than anything else I have felt before. I once treasured it above all things and now it is gone."
His children looked at him with wide eyes before Ruffrunner spoke up. "Dad we know you aren't happy here and a lot of the old generation is the same. You should be happy."
"Thanks boys," he said forcing a smile on his face. "Go to bed know, daddy needs to rest."
The three of them nodded before flying off. You should be happy. His son's words weighed in his head. Yet he knew that if he acted on it there would be consequences.
Why should I fear them? I would rather live in happiness than in misery.
The weight of his decision bore heavily upon hi heart. He regretted the mistakes he had made, the pain he had caused, and the rift that had formed between him and Hiccup. Hiccup had been more than a friend; he had been a brother, a companion who had shown him a world beyond his wildest dreams.
I gave it all up for her, a woman who could care less. He loved his children dearly but his wife and the way she treated the other dragons at time really got on his nerves. I was her protection nothing else.
He wondered if he had let go of his true self, the dragon who had embraced the goodness in the human world, all for the sake of a woman he had just met. He pondered if his longing for Hiccup was not only about missing his friend, but also about yearning to reclaim the part of himself he had lost.
As the moonlight gently bathed Toothless in its soft glow, he made a silent promise to himself. I will strive to bridge the gap between the past and his present. He slowly stood up and stretched his wings out and thought of Hiccup. I'll show future generations of dragons the benefits of bonds with humans.
As he closed his eyes once more, Toothless held onto the memories of his friendship with Hiccup, cherishing them as a testament to the bond they had shared. With a renewed sense of purpose and determination, he welcomed the dreams of a future where dragons and humans could coexist harmoniously, and where he could reunite with his dear brother, Hiccup, once again.
As the Light Fury returned to the cave, Toothless knew it was time to have a heartfelt conversation with her. He approached her cautiously, his eyes filled with a mix of determination as his heart raced in his chest.
Toothless began, his voice gentle but pleading. "I need to see Hiccup. I promise I'll be right back. I miss him deeply and he can help fix my tail"
The Light Fury's eyes narrowed, her expression resolute. "No, Toothless," she responded firmly. "I can't let you go. You have a family here, and I won't allow you to put yourself at risk for the sake of a human."
Toothless felt a pang of frustration, but he remained calm. "Why are you so against him? Hiccup was my brother, my closest friend. He never sought to harm dragons, and he proved that humans and dragons can live in harmony."
The Light Fury's gaze turned cold, her voice filled with bitterness. "All humans are the same, Toothless. They may claim to be different, but deep down, their instincts to harm and control dragons remain. They are a danger to our kind."
He shook his head. "You're wrong. Hiccup showed me a different world, a world where humans and dragons could coexist peacefully. He risked everything to protect our kind, and I owe it to him to see him once more."
The Light Fury's eyes softened for a moment, a flicker of doubt crossing her features. "Toothless,. I can't bear the thought of losing you to their world."
Toothless approached her, nuzzling her gently. "I can't lose you," she whispered, her voice trembling.
He pulled away. "You know when I met you I thought you were amazing but seeing as you how you keep other females away and talk down to me it shows who you really are."
His wife recoiled. "What do you mean?"
"Stormfly. I know the things you said about her and you did all your best to keep her away from didn't you?" He said as the color drained from his wife's face. "We were close but kept us apart out jealousy just like you did with Hiccup."
"How could you say that!" His wife glared at him his body shaking. "You chose me not her, it isn't appropriate to have other females around you." The air in the cave was heavy with tension as they stood there, their love and conflicting desires hanging in the balance. "Why can't you just focus on me instead of others?"
"She was a friend just like Hiccup," he said his voice a low growl. "Just like the other dragons and humans I knew. Tell me the truth did you see me as a mate or as a ladder?"
The Light Fury glared at him her body shaking. "H-How can you say that?"
He chuckled coldly. "It must have been a shock when we first met, I led a bunch of dragons and had everything you didn't have. Love and support and you wanted it all."
Shaking his head the bitterness in his heart started to leak out, all the things he gave up for just so she could use him. He was done, he wouldn't allow her to own his life anymore.
Toothless took a step closer to her, his voice filled with both sorrow and determination. "I love you, but I can't deny the bond I have with Hiccup and neither can I pretend that our relationship can last any longer. He's my brother, and a part of me will always belong to him."
The Light Fury's eyes glistened with unshed tears, and her voice wavered with emotion. "Toothless, if you go to him fine I bet the other dragons won't even care to follow you anymore."
He shrugged, "I can't ask anyone to choose between me and our life together. It's not fair to either of us. But I have to follow my heart, even if it means leaving you."
As the words hung in the air, a silence settled upon them, each understanding the weight of the choice before them. "Fine," she said softly. "The dragons will follow me then. Follow the call of your so called friend. But remember, no matter where you are, a part of me will always be with you. Find your closure, and may it bring you peace."
Her words were like a weight off of his chest. "Goodbye," he said as he spread his wings and took to the skies, leaving behind the life he had built, the family he loved.
As he charged out of the cave he flew off of the cliff the water churning beneath him. I'm going to my true home.
As he soared through the night, his thoughts turned to Hiccup, his dearest friend and brother. The longing in his heart grew stronger, and a newfound determination propelled him forward. He would find Hiccup, express his regrets, and cherish every remaining moment they had together.
And in the depths of his soul, Toothless knew that the choice he had made was not an easy one, but it was necessary. For the love and friendship he shared with Hiccup were irreplaceable, and he couldn't deny the bond they had forged.
He flew and flew some more, occasionally stopping on small deserted islands to eat. His wings ached but he would not stop till he found the one closest to him.
Hiccup I'll find you. Tears fell down his eyes as he forced his tired body to fly, he pushed himself even when his age was catching up with him.
With the wind beneath his wings, Toothless soared toward his destiny, ready to embrace the past, present, and future that lay before him. And as he flew, he carried with him the bittersweet memories of his life with the Light Fury, everyone makes mistakes but right now he was going to live in the present.
As he flew his wings grew heavy with fatigue. The weariness threatened to slow him down, but he refused to yield. With each flap of his wings, he pushed forward, driven by his unwavering determination to reunite with Hiccup and reconcile the human and dragon worlds.
Suddenly, to his surprise he heard the faint flapping of wings beside him. He turned his head and saw his three little Night Lights, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and excitement. "Dad!"
Filled with both concern and pride, Toothless called out to his children, "My darlings, it's dangerous out here. You should return home."
They laughed. "We want to experience these bonds and help you find happiness."
"No, Papa," Dart chirped, "We want to meet Hiccup too. We want to see the world you and he explored together."
He couldn't help but smile at their innocent enthusiasm. He knew they longed for the same connection with the human world that he had cherished. A sense of responsibility to guide them, to show them the possibilities and wonders that existed beyond the realm of dragons.
With a mix of caution and reassurance, Toothless spoke to his children. "Stay close to me, my little ones. We'll fly together, and I will protect you. But remember, we must approach Hiccup with respect and love. He is our friend, and we must honor him as such."
"Besides we aren't alone look!" Pouncer said.
Turning around his eyes widened as he saw Stormfly and a bunch other dragons flying with her. "S-Stormfly!"
The female dragon smiled at him. "Your former mate tried to be the alpha but most of us left, the remainder will probably ditch her sooner or later."
He chuckled. "Come on lets go."
Through the darkness they flew guided by their unwavering bond and their shared longing for reconciliation. The stars above seemed to twinkle with encouragement, as if cheering them on in their quest.
They flew and as they flew farther, they came into contact with more human ships. He recognized the insignia of Berk on some of them and with determination continued going.
After about a week of flying he saw New Berk. This is it.
Humans down below stared at them as they flew around the island.
His eyes then widened he spotted a figure sitting peacefully in front of a quaint house. It was Hiccup, now older but still bearing the same spirit that had forged their unbreakable bond. A mix of anticipation and nervousness filled his heart as landed an approached his dear friend.
Hiccup was older and had grown physically, his gaze was firm as his father's once was yet contained the same love and compassion as they always had
Hiccup's eyes widened in astonishment at the sight of Toothless landing before him. Recognition sparked in his gaze, a flicker of joy and disbelief. He slowly extended his hand, a silent invitation, and Toothless leaned his head into Hiccup's touch, savoring the warmth and familiarity.
Tears welled up in Hiccup's eyes as he whispered, "Toothless... Is it really you? After all these years?"
He let out a rumbling purr, his eyes filled with love and longing. It was a reunion that transcended words. In that moment, the years of separation and regret melted away, replaced by the sheer joy of being in each other's presence once more.
With their hearts pounding, they embraced, their arms wrapping around each other tightly. The weight of their shared history, the triumphs and the mistakes, hung in the air. But in that embrace, they found forgiveness, understanding, and a profound sense of reconciliation.
For what felt like an eternity, they held onto each other, the years of longing and missed opportunities dissolving in their shared embrace. They had grown older, wiser, but their bond remained unyielding, as strong as ever.
Finally, as they pulled apart, their eyes met, shimmering with unspoken words and a renewed sense of purpose. His eyes spoke of gratitude, of the lessons he had learned, and of the dragon he had become because of Hiccup. Hiccup's eyes spoke of acceptance, of forgiveness, and of the love that had never wavered.
"We missed so much, Toothless," Hiccup whispered, his voice filled with a mix of regret and hope.
He nuzzled against Hiccup, his eyes conveying reassurance and gratitude. It was a silent affirmation that the past was behind them, and that the present held the promise of a shared future.
Together, they rose from the ground, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead. Toothless had returned to Hiccup, not just as a companion but as a symbol of the unity they had fought so hard to achieve. And as they walked toward the house, side by side, the bond between them radiated with the strength and resilience that would guide them into a future where dragons and humans would live in harmony.
In that moment of reconciliation, they knew that their friendship would continue to shape their worlds, not just as individuals, but as beacons of hope for a better tomorrow. And with each step they took, they carried with them the love, understanding, and forgiveness that had transformed their lives and the lives of those around them.
"Come on Astrid and the others will want to see you all," Hiccup said as he looked at the other dragons around them. "Our family just got bigger.
