Drakken hung up the phone in a frenzy. His mother had begged him to come to the family Sunday dinner, and as much as he didn't want to go, she wasn't wrong: it had been awhile since he'd been home. However, he felt queasy at the request his mother had made, and he wasn't sure how to go about it. It was important to her, so he had to do it, but God help him, he did not want to.
Shego entered the den and threw something at him. "There's the preliminary thingy majiggy you wanted me to steal. I'm going to the spa now."
He set the device down on the desk. "Wait. Shego, uh, I have a question."
She crossed her arms. "If I have to steal one more thing today, I'm going to lose it, Dr. D."
He waved her off. "No, no. Not that. My uh, my mother is having a family dinner on Sunday."
She raised an eyebrow. "Okay? And?"
He tapped his fingers together nervously. "Well, she wants me to go…"
"Yeah, well you kind of are her son." She shook her head in disbelief.
"She wants you to come, too." He felt his insides twist as she frowned. He should have never asked her, and he felt himself cower away from her, afraid he was going to get hit with her glowing plasma. To his surprise, her hands did not ignite.
"No way. Your mother is a pain in my ass."
He groaned. "Yes, but we won't be the only ones there, so she won't be able to pull her shenanigans. Come on, Shego, it'll be fun! My mother likes you."
"No. Your mother likes me with you. The only reason she wants me to come is so she can try to set us up again." He blushed at her words. The last time his mother had been around, he and Shego hadn't slept together yet. Now that they have, and now that they have stopped, this conversation was awkward, but before he could say anything, she was speaking again. "And don't even get me started on your freaking cousin. Eddie is such a creep. Seriously, how did the mad genius turn out to be the sane one in the family?"
He shrugged. "Aunt Jane and Uncle Robert will be there too. And Eddie's sister, Sarah, and his brother, Jacob, will be there."
She shook her head. "I'm not going, and you can't make me."
He sighed. "What if I pay for your next spa visit?"
She smiled. "Do you know how expensive those are, Doc?"
He nodded his head. "Yes. It's no wonder you need pay raises all the time."
She smirked at him. "Fine. I'll go, but you have to pay for the whole day, not just an hour."
He groaned. "Nygh! Fine. You got a deal."
…..
Drakken knocked on his mother's door. Shego stood next to him with her arms crossed as she tapped her foot, growing inpatient.
Mrs. Lipsky finally opened the door. "Drewbie!" She hugged him tightly. "Oh, I'm so glad you made it! Once she saw her, she let go of Drakken. "Shego! What a delight!" She hugged her, which made her tense up, but Mrs. Lipsky let go soon enough. "Please come in," She stepped aside to let Drakken and Shego in.
Shego took in the look of the home. It was painfully obvious an elderly woman lived here with all of its pictures and nicknacks. She smiled as she saw pictures of Drakken when he was a kid. Every school year picture from Pre-K to college was hung up. He had been such a cute kid. He was still cute, but she wasn't allowed to think that. They had decided to stay friends, and she needed to get over whatever unresolved feelings she had for him.
After Mrs. Lipsky introduced Shego to everyone, the worst possible person that could have entered the room, did. "Hey, cuz. And you brought the green babe! Seriously!" Eddie came around the corner, hugging Drakken. She frowned at him. If she never had to see Ed again, it would be too soon.
Once Ed let go of him, Drakken leaned toward Shego to whisper to her. "Remember, mother doesn't know about your powers, so please control your hatred for Eddie."
She smirked at him. "I don't recall that being part of our deal, Doc," she whispered back.
He gasped. "Shego," he whispered again. He leaned in closer, letting his mouth come near her ear so that no one would hear them. "I swear if you let my mother see that, I'll-"
"You'll what?" she interrupted.
Before he could respond, Mrs. Lipsky had noticed the two standing close together with Drakken's face near her hair as he was whispering to her. "Awww, my two favorite lovebirds! Have we finally acknowledged our feelings?"
Drakken immediately pulled away from Shego as he blushed. Shego frowned, doing everything in her power to not let her annoyance get to her. "Mother! We discussed this! Shego and I have a professional relationship."
Mrs. Lipsky smiled. "Do you take any of your other aids to your mother's house?"
Drakken's mouth fell open. "Nygh, argh, nygh! But you- you asked me to bring her!"
She shrugged. "She didn't have to say yes."
Shego couldn't help it. Her hands ignited as her blood boiled. Drakken tried to step in front of her, but his mother saw her first, and her eyes grew at the sight of her freaky, glowing hands. All of Drakken's cousins had their mouths hung open, shocked at what was right in front of them, but she didn't care. She was so sick of Mrs. Lipsky sticking her nose where it didn't belong. Her and Drakken's relationship was none of her business. "Listen here, Debbie," Shego said as she stepped toward her, but Drakken pulled her arm back, dragging her back toward him.
He laughed nervously. "Now Shego, no need to get all green on us." The look he gave her of slight anger made her withdraw the plasma back into her palms. He looked back at his mother. "Sorry about that. Shego doesn't know what the word 'control' means." He gave her the side eye but quickly brought his attention back to his mother.
Mrs. Lipsky pointed at Shego. "But, but, her hands. What? How?"
Before Shego could speak, Drakken put his hand up in front of her and spoke for her. "Lab accident. We're working on fixing it. Don't worry, mother."
"Oh. You ran a lab test on that sweet girl! What is wrong with you, Drew?"
Shego giggled at his clear discomfort. "I- we- I was trying to help someone with a uh rare disease, and Shego volunteered to be a guinea pig for the cure. I - there was just a uh- accident."
Shego frowned. "Volunteer? Doc, you practically made me!" She did everything to repress her laugh when he glared at her.
"Drewbie! How could you do that?" Mrs. Lipsky said.
Shego grinned. "Yeah, Drewbie. How could you do that?"
"Nygh! Let's just forget it!" Once everyone was settled out of their shock, Drakken leaned toward Shego to whisper in her ear. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
She smirked. "Oh, I'm having the best time."
…..
The dinner went smoothly. No more talk from Mrs. Lipsky about Drakken and Shego's "feelings" for each other. No more talk of her powers. Even Eddie controlled himself with his sexist comments. Uncle Robert and Aunt Jane were nice, but she could tell that they were afraid of her. Good. And the amount of cousins that Drakken had was outrageous. She had expected the three cousins Drakken mentioned, but there were 5 others. (Jane and Robert clearly did not believe in birth control).
Cousin Sarah spoke as she was collecting the dishes. "Now it's time for some karaoke!"
There was a good amount of excitement from the people at the table, which made Shego sink into her chair. So that wasn't just a Drakken thing- it was the whole Lipsky bloodline. Great. "I'll go set up the karaoke machine," Aunt Jane said as she got up.
Cousin Jacob looked at Drakken. "Alright, Drew. Ready to get beat again?"
Drakken groaned. "Just because you won every karaoke night ever doesn't mean you'll win this round."
Jacob chuckled. "Did you suddenly get better?"
He got up from the table before Drakken could respond, which made him huff. Shego raised an eyebrow. "I'm no expert, but how do you lose at karaoke?"
Drakken sighed. "We do it as a competition. You sing a song, and each family member rates it from 1 to 10. Whoever scores the highest wins."
She shook her head. "That is so lame," she mumbled so that the only person that could hear her was Drakken.
He shrugged. "It's a family tradition."
"One that you suck at, apparently." She laughed when he shot her a glare.
"You know how I could beat Jacob?"
She knew that look. "Oh hell no. Absolutely not."
"Oh come on, Shego. He will die when he hears you sing. Do a duet with me! It'll be fun!"
"No."
"Please!"
"There is literally nothing you can say that will make me sing."
Mrs. Lipsky caught the last part of their conversation. "Oh, you sing, dear? How awesome! I can't wait to hear it!"
Shego shook her head. "Uh, no, I will not be doing that."
Mrs. Lipsky pouted. "But why? Do you not like our family, Shego?"
Shego's mouth opened and then closed again. So she did kind of feel bad for freaking out on his mother. (Honestly, it was fine- Drakken stopped her before it got bad, but still), and now she was pouting, accusing her of not liking the family. (She didn't, but Mrs. Lipsky didn't need to pick up on that). "Argh! Fine! I'll do a stupid duet." She turned to Drakken. "But no Taylor Swift!"
He gasped. "We have to do Taylor Swift!" She crossed her arms as a response, but then he gave her the pouty dog face, and she couldn't resist. "Fine. Whatever," she mumbled.
He threw his hands in the air in excitement. "Yes! Taylor Swift's Enchanted will just be great with your voice."
She groaned. "Why is it always that song, Doc?"
"Because it's lyrically genius, Shego"
…
Jacob had finished his song, and he got an average score of 8 from everyone in the room. Shego had to admit, he was pretty good, and Drakken was right. He would need her to beat him. He pulled her up, handing her a mic as he got the song pulled up on the screen. "Ready?" he asked.
She looked at his family, and his mother smiled at her. "Yeah, I guess."
"Okay, so we'll take turns singing lines in verses, and we'll sing the chorus together."
She rolled her eyes. "I got it, Dr. D. Just play the damn song already."
He hit play, and right away the tune made her tingle. Maybe singing this particular song with him wasn't the best idea when she was trying to rid herself of her feelings.
Drakken sang first.
There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Shego went next, and her voice Drakken shivers. He had never heard her sing outside of the shower, and man, how did the voice of an angel come out of someone so devilishly evil?
Walls of insincerity
Shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
Drakken's turn. All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you.
Shego was getting nervous, but she kept going.
Your eyes whispered, "Have we met?"
Across the room, your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
Drakken noticed her nerves and smiled at her. She wasn't used to performing like he was, and he just wanted to comfort her.
The playful conversation starts
Counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy
Shego smiled at that line. If that didn't describe how their conversations went, she didn't know what did. And all I can is it was enchanting to meet you. I was enchanted to meet you.
The chorus was up next, and their voices meshed together.
This night is sparkling, don't you let it go
I'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
I'll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
They got through the next verse and the chorus, and then there was a small instrumental solo. Drakken took the opportunity to make her smile as he grabbed her hand and spun her. She laughed as she was getting ready to sing the bridge.
This is me praying that
This was the very first page
Not where the story line ends
My thoughts will echo your name
Until I see you again
Drakken grinned as he spun her again and got ready for his line.
These are the words I held back
As I was leaving too soon
I was enchanted to meet you
He moved a strand of hair from her face and let his hand linger on her cheek as he sang the next part. Please don't be in love with someone else. Please don't have somebody waiting on you.
Her insides twisted as she went for the higher notes of the words he just said. Please don't be in love with someone else. Please don't have somebody waiting on you.
She got nervous again as the song perfectly described what she could not express in her own words. He picked up on it, and grabbed her hand and spun her again. She laughed as they sang the chorus.
This night is sparkling, don't you let it go
I'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
I'll spend forever wondering if you knew
This night is flawless, don't you let it go
I'm wonderstruck, dancing around all alone
I'll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
They ended the last part of the song as they stared into each other's eyes. Please don't be in love with someone else. Please don't have somebody waiting on you.
She smiled at him, almost forgetting where she was until the cheers of Drakken's family members started. The only one not cheering was Jacob, who sunk in his chair, knowing very well that he just lost.
"Oh my gosh," Mama Lipsky said. "That was so good! My Drewbie and his girl can outperform anyone!"
Shego groaned. Here we go with that crap again.
"It was just a song, Debbie," Shego gritted her teeth as she sat back down. She looked at Drakken. "I am never doing a karaoke night ever again."
He pouted. "But this Friday is the big competition at the karaoke bar!"
"Don't care," she mumbled. Okay, so she was being a little harsh. Only because he made her get up in front of his family and sing a freaking love song with him. What was he thinking?
Eddie looked at Drakken and smirked at him. He tried to whisper so that Shego didn't hear him, but his voice carried. "I'm sorry, man. I'll stop going after the green babe. The chemistry you two have is electric. Seriously!"
Shego rolled her eyes and stood up. "We're going home now."
Mrs. Lipsky stood up with her. "Now Shego, it's alright. You don't need to go home yet. Eddie was just saying that you two are perfect for each other, which it's true, but-"
Shego's hands ignited. "I'm sick of this." She let the fire in her hands die as she grabbed Drakken by his shirt, pulling him up and crashing his lips to hers. Everyone's eyes grew wide, including Drakken, who didn't know what she was thinking. Electricity moved through her body as she kissed him. Yeah, she's definitely missed the feeling of him. When she pulled away, she looked at his mother. "See? No spark. No electricity. Nothing." She was lying. It wasn't nothing. It was everything, but she refused to believe her own thoughts on that one. "So will you drop it now?"
Drakken's heart sank. Nothing. She felt nothing.
Mrs. Lipsky smiled but nodded her head. "Yes. Of course, dear." Shego grabbed his arm and practically dragged him out of there, but not before she heard what Mrs. Lipsky said to the other members of the family. "They are just so cute, aren't they? So in denial."
