Hey guys, I'm back with another chapter!

Hope you like it :)

3 hours later Danny was still seated on one of the wooden chairs in the waiting room, over his lap sprawled laid John, soundly asleep. The boy was exhausted but Danny had known, he couldn't bring him out of the hospital before there weren't any news on Steve. And he couldn't blame him.

"Detective Williams?"

A soft voice startled him and his head snapped up to have a look at a doctor standing in front of him. "Uh, yes… yes! Gimmea second.", Danny coaxed himself out under the sleeping boy's sleeping form as gently as possible and grabbed a lonely pillow laying around on of the chairs to shove it under his head. Fortunately, John didn't wake.

Danny stepped away with the doctor and smiled tiredly at him. "Please tell me you got some news for me."

"I do. Your teammates told the nurse to come find you on news for Commander McGarrett.", the middle-aged guy in white made a pause. "Im Dr. Milton and I operated on your friend. He is fairly alright – battered but alive. The bullet nicked the artery in his thigh pretty good and he lost a lot of blood. It got stuck in the bone but fortunately, it didn't shatter it. The thigh bone is badly bruised tho but we were able to repair the lacking artery. He's still on fluids due to the heavy blood loss and we got him a bunch of pain medication. He will be out of a recovery in about an hour and then we will move him to a regular room. A nurse will come and get you.", he explained with a smile.

"Thank you… thanks, Doc!", Danny took a deep breath. "Uh… that's his son over there, 12 years old. Is he allowed to visit?", he moved his hand to the sleeping figure on the chairs.

"Sure, that won't be a problem. Commander McGarrett will still be a little sluggish and tired, so you may keep an eye on the length of the visit. And maybe you explain to him what he is going to expect so he won't be scared but otherwise it's not a problem at all."

"Thank you very much."

The doctor left and Danny sat down again next to John. He sighed, rubbing his tired face and closed his eyes for a second. Relief flowed through his body. Honestly, he never had been happier to avoid a conversation with the boy he didn't want to have at all. But Steve will be alright. There won't be any kind of some conversation like that necessary.

Danny waited until the nurse arrived to wake the slumbering boy. "Hey, buddy. Time to wake up, come on!", he shook him slightly on the shoulder until John blinked sleepily at him. He rubbed his eyes and sat up, looking at Danny who was crouching down in front of him and smiled.

"I have some good news for you.The doctor came by and your Dad is going to be alright."

John's eyes widened. "Really? He is going to be okay?"

"Yeah, bud, he is. You wanna see him?"

"Yes!", the boy jumped off the chairs, nearly doubling Danny over in the process.

"Okay!", he laughed, grabbing John's hand. "Come on, the nice nurse here will lead us to your Dad."

Said nurse brought the two down the hall to the regular rooms where she showed them Steves room. "I will let you two some time alone and be back a little later for a check up.", she smiled and left.

Before they would go in, Danny leaned down to John to prepare him a little. "Bud, before we go in, I just wanted to explain to you what the doctor said to me. Your Dad had surgery to repair his leg, okay? So he will have thick bandages wrapped around it and maybe you can see some blood on it. That's not dangerous, it's normal. He may have some things stuck into his arms and neck, they are called IVs. They should give your Dad some fluids to keep him hydrated and help to regain all the blood he had lost. He will be alright but he may be still very tired and feeling groggy. You okay with that?"

John had listened very carefully and nodded. He wasn't a little child anymore after all, he could manage. Danny smiled at him and grabbed the door knob. "Okay, then let's go."

Steve's waking process had been very slowly and painful. First, he couldn't remember a thing. He just had blinked at the blurry ceiling, barely aware of someone trying to talk to him. He had just closed his eyes and fell asleep again. Next time he had woken up, he had stared into the face of a smiling nurse. She had said something he couldn't understand but a little later, the heavy pain in his leg had lessened to a dull throbbing and allowed himself to go back to sleep.

Now, he was awake again and feeling a bit better. His vision wasn't blurry anymore and he could remember the fragments of being shot at the harbour. Fortunately, the pain was still endurable and after he lolled his head slightly to the side, he could eye the thick bandage surrounding half of his leg and half of his hip. He licked his lips and sighed. The nurse had given him a few sips to drink not too long ago but his throat and lips still felt as he swallowed sand paper.

A noise at the door let his attention snapping back and a second later, his partner strolled in. Danny smiled and stepped forward, leaning over the bed rail. "Hey you, maniac. How are you doing?"

Steve smiled tiredly. "Hey, Danno. m okay. Leg is still there and I'm tired.", he replied with a scratchy voice. Danny offered him another cup of water to soothe his voice and he thanked him. "I'm glad you're okay, you had me a bit worried out there, man."

"Sorry.", Steve blinked at him.

"I forgive you, for now at least.", he made a pause and patted his friend on his good leg. "If youre feeling up to it, I have a little visitor who would like to see you."

He marched back to the door which was left ajar and waved John in who shuffled into the room immediately. He was unsure and a little nervous but the second he saw Steve smiling at him, he couldn't stop but run forward to the bed. "Dad!"

"Hey, little sailor. I'm so happy to see you.", Steve whispered, relieved to see his son unharmed. The boy hung himself over the railing to awkwardly hug him from his position while standing on his toes, clinging like he wouldn't let go of his father anymore.

"I was so scared.", John sniffed and Steve grabbed him tighter.

"I'm so sorry… so sorry I scared you. But I'm okay.", he whispered and stroked his hand over the boys curled hair. "Come on, come here to me."

Danny stepped in as he watched Steve clumsily to get down the bed rail and apparently took it down by himself. John looked as his father, uncertain to hurt him but Steve waved weakly his hand. "It's alright. Come here, I want a real hug."

After another short hesitation, John climbed up on the bed on Steves good-side-leg and cuddled up against his father. Steve pressed his son against his chest, feeling all the tension in his body leaving immediately. He looked over John's head propped up against his shoulder to Danny standing a few steps away, smiling. "Thank you.", he mouthed to him and his partner just smiled even wider. After Danny reassured himself the two were comfy, he stepped out to call Chin and Kono and the give two McGarrett's a little time alone.

Father and son laid there for nearly half an hour, just like this. Although Steve was in a bit of pain and felt dog tired, he could sense something was on his son's mind. He stroked his back and turned his head a little to have a better look at him. "Do you want to tell me what's on your mind?", he asked quietly.

John's eye popped open and blinked at him. He shifted and started drawing his finger over the sheets underneath him. Steve had to smile about him. He always would distract himself with something like this when he was about to have a serious talk. Steve used to do that as well when he had been little by himself.

John licked his lips. "I'm sorry what I said to you… during our arguments. I didn't mean it, I swear."

"It's okay, champ. I'm sorry too.", Steve kissed him on the head.

"Dad? I have to talk to you.", John said, sitting up in his fathers bed and sat legs crossed next to him. Steve raised an eyebrow but he waited for his son to continue. "I knew, when you came home injured. You thought you could hide it from me but… I knew. And you haven't told me."

Steve looked at him, shifting a little with his position in his pillow. "You were angry at me because I haven't told you when I got injured on the job?"

John nudged at his feet, not meeting his fathers gaze and nodded. Steve sighed and he took a moment to clear his fuzzy brain. "Why didn't you say anything to me?"

John shrugged his shoulders. "I knew, you… you wouldn't want to worry me. But I was scared something would happen to you and… and I wouldn't see you again."

Steve's heart broke into a thousand pieces. He wanted to hug his boy and never ever let him go again. "I'm sorry I scared you like this, I wasn't aware of that. Buddy, I love you, okay? You are everything to me and I would never get in any unnecessary danger just to worry you. I have a dangerous job, that's true… but I will try to be more careful in the future, okay? And you have to promise me to talk to me. Do we have a deal, sailor?"

John grinned at him and saluted to his Dad. "Yes, Sir!"

Steve smirked and saluted right back to him. The door opened again and Danny entered. He smiled at the sight of John still sitting in Steve's bed and smirking at him. As well as Steve was happy again, although he was pale and some little pain lines had appeared in his face. The exhaustion seemed taking over and his friend was likely to pass out in the next few minutes. Danny decided to step and came forward. "I called Kono and Chin, they wish you the best and they will step by tomorrow for a visit. In addition to that, we got our guy – case closed, Governor is very pleased and sends you some virtual flowers."

John clapped his hands. "So, you put another bad guy behind bars?"

Steve grinned tiredly at him. "Yes, that we did."

"Johnny, what do you think of joining me to pick up Charlie from his soccer training and go for some tacos? We should let your Dad get some rest.", Danny squeezed the boys neck who seemed a bit unsure and disappointed to leave his father but Steve smiled at him. "Go with Uncle Danno, it's alright. You can come back tomorrow and we can call in the evening before you go to bed, if youd like to?

John looked at him. "But… I wanted to talk about the growing-up-thing…I have thought about it a lot."

"We will do that, okay? But not today, I'm really tired, bud."

"Promise?", John gave him his biggest eyes. They worked since his age of 2 and Steve could curse about them every day.

"Biggest promise ever.", his Dad assured him and opened up his arms. "Come on, one last hug!", he let the boy cuddling up against him and squeezed him. "I love you. Have fun and be good."

"Love you too, Dad.", he then climbed down the bed and shot Steve a last look, before Danny shooed him out of the room. The Jersey Cop shot a last glaze to the bed where his friend already fell asleep before he quietly closed the door.

"So, should we bring your Dad some tacos as a leftover tomorrow? You know, the ones with guacamole and rice?", Danny laid his arm around the boy's shoulder.

John jumped and laughed. "But he hates them, Uncle D, he always says they taste like blank paper. Don't you know that?"

"Of course I know that.", Danny smirked.

That's it for today!

I got one last chapter for you planned, it will be probably online on sunday :)
