Fourth of July Fun

Chapter One

It was July and it was hot!

For many people, July wasn't just the month where the long summer holidays began for the schools, but it was also the month where the federal holiday those in the United States of America celebrated every year! Independence Day!

But the American humans weren't the only ones excited for this big celebration, for deep underground the city of Chicago in Illinois, the mutant residence of the hidden city of Mutopia were gearing up for the holiday too!

In one of the large caverns of the sanctuary which was used as a classroom, three young mutants and a human girl were sitting at some desks looking up at the purple masked turtle Donatello who was pointing a long stick at the blackboard that had some information for them to copy down as well as some pictures of the past US presidents like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin that we had stuck up there.

Even though it was almost the holidays, Donatello felt it best as the children were to still learn more about the famous holiday as it approached each year.

"And so it was then from 1776 that the holiday the 4th of July is celebrated each year to mark America's Impendence from England!" Donatello concluded, he then turned to the children, the Lizard Turtle Hybrid Pandora, the eldest at nine years old, the twin Geckolings Freya and Loki aged eight, and the youngest of the group at aged six, human Japanese girl Kemeko.

"Wow, all those celebrations we have, and it's all because of that?" Loki asked.

"Uh huh!" Kemeko said "All celebrations stem from somewhere, not just an excuse for a big party!"

"I can't wait till actual 4th of July in two days!" Pandora grinned "Outdoor Barbecues, and fireworks!"

"Wish we could watch actual parades though." Freya sighed "And concerts, yet because of what we are, we can't!"

"Who says you kids can't?" Donatello asked, "You've seen all sorts from the shadows?"

"I guess so." Freya replied, "But sometimes when we watch the kids playing and joining in, it's kind of sad we can't."

"Well, Kemeko could!" Pandora said looking at her human cousin.

"True!" Loki agreed.

"Well depending on how things go." Donatello said "If Tyroth has made plans for us to venture topside to see the celebrations in the city, then we'll see what we can do, in the meantime, I want each of you to put together a presentation about American Independence which I will have you perform at lunchtime tomorrow."

"A presentation?" the children asked together.

"Uh huh!" Donatello nodded "Each of you is going to speak about a topic regarding the holiday and put on the display at the mess hall for the adults tomorrow."

The children looked at each other and gulped.

Donatello chuckled then he handed each child a sheet of paper with their topic on it.

"Now, you need to work together to put this show and tell together, and I'll know if you've done well with your teamwork, as this project is not just about how well you know your history, but how you work as a team."

"Okay Uncle Don!" the children said.

"Great!" Donatello smiled then he heard an alarm go off from a clock near the blackboard signalling it was the end of the session.

"Class dismissed!" he said.

The children grinned then quickly tided the desks they sat at then after thanking Donatello they left the classroom but not before they heard Donatello call out to them.

"Don't forget to read pages 11-21 for the test on Friday!"

"Got it!" they called over their shoulders as they left.

Donatello shook his head then rubbed out the writing on the blackboard before making sure everything was prepped for tomorrow's school hours.

As the children ran to the playroom, they looked at the papers with their topics.

"So, we got to put together a show and tell for the grown-ups?" Pandora asked.

"Not much different than we've done before!" Loki said.

"Yeah!" Freya agreed.

"If we put our heads together, we can put together something amazing!" Kemeko said.

"What's your topic?" Freya asked the Asian girl.

"Mine is how do people celebrate the holiday, past and present." Kemeko reported.

"Mine talks about the Founding Fathers and the critical people who made the declaration of Independence." Pandora said.

"Mine is about the timeline of Independence Day." Loki volunteered.

"And mine says to talk about five facts about Independence Day." Freya ended.

"Boy, have we got a lot of work ahead of us!" Pandora moaned.

"Oh, don't whinge!" Kemeko said "We can make it fun, and the sooner we start now, the sooner we can have some fun!"

"I'm with Kemeko!" Loki cheered.

"Alright!" Freya agreed "Come on then, let's get this project nailed!"

As the kids walked into the playroom, Donatello had watched them go and smiled to himself proudly.

"Even though they don't go to a school like the humans do," he thought to himself "They still need to learn what they have to learn."

As he closed the door of the classroom, he saw his adopted older sister, the Lizard Monalisa and the Mutopian Gecko Sephie walking over.

"Oh, hey girls!" he smiled.

"Hey Don!" the lizards replied, "How was the kids schooltime?"

"A breeze!" Donatello said proudly "They were on the ball and enjoyed learning about the History of our upcoming holiday! And I've given them a project!"

"What kind of project?" Sephie asked curiously.

Donatello winked and told the lizard girls what he had set them.

"Really?" Monalisa asked "A show and tell for the adults tomorrow lunch time?"

Donatello nodded.

"And it's a group presentation and they need to work together to do it,"

"You're a genius Don!" Sephie praised "Giving the kids a chance to work together as a team with their schoolwork, not just in ninja training!"

Monalisa agreed with a nod, proud of her younger adopted brother.

"You really are a good teacher to them!" she said, "Not just an inventor, scientist and medic, but an awesome teacher!"

"Well, I learnt a lot from you sis, when it came to teaching!" Donatello blushed.

Monalisa chuckled and kissed Donatello's cheek making him blush harder and it made Sephie laugh.

"So erm…" the brainy turtle asked, "What's the plan for the Fourth of July celebrations?"

Sephie grinned.

"Well, Louie and Patch have got everything planned for a huge barbeque on one of the large Islands on Lake Michigan!" she said, "Cam and Barry were able to salvage a lot of equipment for a makeshift barbeque, as well as get all the food needed, Meat and vegetarian."

"Yeah, got to make sure we got variety, especially with Sharky and others who don't eat meat."

"And Fireworks?" Donatello asked.

"Well, the city will be letting theirs off, but once again, thanks to Cam and Barry, we got some fireworks of our own!"

"And we made sure Rattletrap didn't get his paws on them!" Monalisa said to which Sephie nodded.

"Tyroth will be in charge of those, in case anything goes wrong!" Sephie reassured.

"That's a relief!" Donatello said "Well, with him being fireproof as a dragon, he's the best one to handle the fireworks!"

The girls agreed.

"Well, we got two days till the big event, so we'll just have to wait." Said Monalisa "But in the meantime, I can't wait to see what the kids have got in store for us at lunch!"

Sephie nodded.

"Yeah! And I'm sure with Donatello's teaching, they'll come up with something amazing! Come on! Let's go to the Rec room and see if we can't play a video game or have a go at some Pool!"

Donatello and Monalisa agreed, and they walked with Sephie to the main village.

So the kids have been challanged to put together a little presentation for the Fourth of July! I wonder how they will pull it off? Well tune into the next chapter to find out!

See you then!
