~Hello Everyone TsukikoUchu here with another story
This one is my first ever attempt at a black clover story, recently got into the anime big time and well thought i'd give it a shot at writing my own fanfic, i'm sure some of you would rather prefer i work on my various unfinished naruto stories, but i'm afraid i'm all naruto'd out for the time being, hence the reason there hasn't been many updates for my stories lately, also i got a job a few months ago that keeps me busy and so that doesn't leave much room for writing i'm afraid, anyway this story is about redemption
Rui is the main character of the story, an oc that i came up with specifically for the story, a girl who lost both of her parents at a young age, after joining the golden dawn she attempts to search for her fathers murderer while slowly falling in love with her captain, I'll mention during the prologue Rui is only 15, for the rest of the chapters she'll be 18 and older anyway i hope you enjoy.
one last thing, I have decided that this is will be also be posted over on another site archiveofourown, under the username Periwinkle888, later
TsukikoUchu out~
"I'm sorry Lady Nakamura, we've found your missing husband, I'm afraid he was murdered" the magic knight that had come to give the news to the Nakamura family bowed his head in apology to the now widowed wife of Lord Nakamura.
A frail woman that upon hearing those words collapsed, a sob tearing from her throat at the loss of her loved one, all of which brought her 7-year-old daughter running "Mother what's wrong" little Rui Nakamura, the heiress of house Nakamura cried.
Rushing to hug her mother with tears in her soft white eyes, "Oh Rui-chan, it's your father, I'm sorry my little love, but he won't be coming back anymore" the lady of house Nakamura sobbed, cradling her child as the reality of their situation hit hard.
The knight who'd coming bearing the news quietly exited the house in mourning and soon a funeral was upon them without the magic knights ever having found Lord Nakamura's murderer, a year later tragedy struck house Nakamura once again.
When the lady of the house passed away due to her frailty and broken heart, leaving 8 year old Rui all on her own, the last thing her mother said to her, words that she engraved into her heart were "Join the Golden Dawn at any cost Rui, find your father's murderer and bring back honor to house Nakamura, you are my only hope" before passing away.
7 years later after turning 15 years old Rui received her grimoire, it was dark white with a three-leaf clover on it, there were only 6 spells while the rest of it was empty pages and she began practicing right away in order to be ready for the magic knight exams.
Very quickly, however Rui found out that controlling her magic ability was no easy feat as she struggled for two months to even learn how to use one of her spells before it was time to take the exams and on the day of, she headed for the arena.
"Your number 189" the man informed after inspecting the dark white grimoire and sending 15-year-old Rui on her way to wait with the rest of the examinees until the test started, chatter filled the air but Rui remained quiet as she always was, because she was extremely shy and had difficulty opening up to people.
Not that she'd had any friends growing up and the deaths of her parents had only made her withdraw further into herself "Attention examinees, the magic knight exam will now commence: Magic Tree's Descent" a voice announced, drawing Rui from her thoughts.
She watched in awe as the sky darkened and a large tree began descending, creating brooms for each of the examinee's "Now that you have your brooms, I'm sure you can figure out what the first test will be, as knights you'll be given missions and one of the basic qualities of a magic knight is flight" the same voice from before said.
Taking a deep breath Rui sat delicately on her broom and focused, rising quickly into the air and evening out while the other examinees struggled, if the captains watching over the exams were surprised at her quick ascent none of them let it show as she flew around the arena, getting use to being up in the air.
While the others did their best until it was time for the next test and the next and the next, all of which focused on their control until "You've all done very well, but now it's time for the final test of this exam, you'll duel with another examinee and whoever wins will stand before the captains" the examiner called.
It was then Rui managed to look up and notice that the one who happened to be giving the exam was none other than the captain of the Golden Dawn, William Vangeance, the very squad her mother wished for her to join more than any other squad.
This last test was the only thing standing in the way of that right now as she looked around in a panic trying to find someone to partner up with for the duel, it was taken out of her hands however when another examinee approached and practically demanded that they partner up for the final test.
And that's how Rui found herself facing against her first ever opponent, listening as Captain Vangeance spoke in a calm manner "Look your practically shaking, why don't you go home and try again next year" her partner taunted in hopes of making the small girl forfeit.
"Don't underestimate me" Rui whispered softly, afraid to speak louder than that as the other fifteen-year-old drew out his grimoire and managed to unleash a spell first, for one split second, she froze, not wanting to get hurt but with her mother's last words fueling her.
Rui drew the sword at her waist "Fire Creation Magic: Searing Strike" the whole sword was then enveloped in white flames as she darted forward straight through her opponent's spell, faster than he expected probably she was before him, white flames burst forth as she brought her blade down.
Ending the duel in a matter of moments despite her initial hesitance and because she wasn't the type to intentionally harm someone, she helped put out the flames once she was announced the winner of the fight, showing care as she moved out of the way as others took their turns.
Until finally all contestants had fought allowing the captains to judge their skill in combat and now it was time for the remaining candidates to stand before the captains, by the time it was Rui's turn, only 5 had managed to make it into a squad.
"Number 189, Captains raise your hand if you would like for this candidate to join your squad" Captain Vangeance said, for one split moment Rui thought she hadn't done a good enough job until four captains raised their hands, Silver Eagles, Crimson Lion Kings, Aqua Deer and Golden Dawn.
She was the first candidate to get more than one raised hand from the captains but Rui already knew which squad she wanted to join "I..It would be an honor to join Golden Dawn" Rui's voice was soft but hearable to the captains and William Vangeance nodded his head in acceptance.
When the rest of the candidates had taken their turn Rui let the tension drain out of her, leaving exhaustion in its place but the sound of footsteps coming towards her had her tense as she turned and noticed the Captain of the Golden Dawn walking swiftly in her direction.
"Ah Nakamura-san if you'd come with me, I'll take you to headquarters" William instructed in that gentle voice of his, clutching her broom, Rui nodded quietly, immediately following behind him as he began leaving the arena where other members of her squad waited with a spatial portal open in preparation of their return.
Just before he was to go through Captain William turned to face his new recruit and stretched out his hand "Please have the honor of going through first Nakamura-san" he offered, radiating nothing but kindness as a gentle smile spread across his face.
Rui carefully took the hand being offered to her and with quiet determination passed through the spatial portal to the Golden Dawn HQ with the captain on her heels, warm was her first thought as she looked about in moderation to the captain's amusement.
Before she was led through the base to a room that was now hers "Rest easy, I'll have you introduced to the rest of the squad tomorrow Nakamura-san" William informed, already halfway down the hall, apparently the rumors were true, he was an extremely busy man.
"Goodnight then Captain Vangeance" Rui whispered, doubting if he heard her as she grabbed the handle of her door in order to shut it, missing her captain returning the nightly tidings as she unpacked the few belongings she had, before finally laying in her bed to get some sleep after her long, hard day.
And then the next morning she was introduced to the rest of her squad "Nakamura you said, ah that Nakamura I bet" Klaus, the one who oversaw the newbies, remarked, and got a quiet nod "Don't talk much do you" he commented, giving her a tour of Headquarters.
Rui shook her head lightly, memorizing where everything was as best, she could "Well it's unlikely you'll be going on any missions soon, so for now I would suggest training and doing chores when asked, I'm sure you remember the way to the training field I showed you" Klaus suggested.
"Yes Sir" Rui murmured softly, heading off to do just that and for the next several hours, practices another of her spells, unaware of the violet eyes that watched her "Fire Creation Magic: Scorching Ray" she calls out in her quiet voice, trying to force her magic ability to become a tightly condensed ball of white fire.
That she directed with her wand at targets across the field "Captain" a voice draws the attention of the one with purple eyes, it's Klaus coming to check on their new recruit, only to be surprised to find their captain in the midst of observing the newbies combat abilities.
"Klaus, quite fascinating magic isn't it, but perhaps she could use some instruction, Nakamura-san seems to be struggling to control her magic" William explained, just from a few minutes of watching he was able to figure out quite a bit about the fifteen-year-old that had just joined their squad.
With a nod, not daring to object, Klaus heads over to Rui and began imparting his infinite wisdom upon the youngster as their Captain returned to his duties of paperwork and assigning missions to his squad members, until a month had gone by.
So, imagine Rui's surprise when upon waking for the day, in the process of dressing, a knock sounded on her door "Rui, when you're dressed and have eaten breakfast, please present yourself to the captain" Klaus's voice called out from the other side.
Confused as to what was going on, she hurriedly dressed, then rushed to the cafeteria and grabbed the first tray she saw, it didn't matter that it wasn't something she usually ate, all that mattered was finding out why the captain was summoning her for the first time in a month.
Despite appearing to be in a hurry, Rui ate with manners as she was taught, her mother would be appalled if she let her lessons go to waste, when she was finished, Rui quickened her pace again and made it to the captain's office in record-breaking time.
Upon knocking, the voice of captain Vangeance called out for her to enter "Y..You summoned me Captain" Rui inquired softly, barely managing to look the 24-year-old man in the eyes before looking to her feet, missing the amused smile at her behavior.
"Indeed, I did Nakamura-san, Klaus has notified me of your progress during training, so I think it's time you went on a mission... I won't be sending you alone of course, Klaus will be going along as well" William explained, watching the panic appear on her face when he paused for a moment.
The tension quickly drained out of her at the familiar name "Alright I'll do my best Sir...what kind of mission is it, if you don't mind me asking that is" Rui asked in a hesitant voice, knowing some people hated being questioned.
Luckily it seemed she'd gotten the luck of the draw with William Vangeance as he nodded "Of course not, ask as many questions as you need, it's a good quality to have, as for your mission, it's a joint escort mission with the crimson lion kings" William informed.
Planning to observe in order to see how she handles her first mission "Right" Rui bowed, waiting for a dismissal which came a moment later, allowing her to hurry off and pack for the mission, where afterwards she met Klaus at the entrance of their Headquarters.
"I hope you're ready Rui, we'll be escorting a high-ranking noble to the Heart Kingdom, we'll be gone for several days so, make sure you're truly prepared" Klaus asked, not admitting that he was worried, Rui was too soft for the battlefield.
Or at least that's what he thought given her shy and extremely quiet demeanor "Yes Sir" Rui nodded, absolutely certain she had everything she needed as they took to the skies soon after on their brooms to meet up with the mission client and the members of the crimson lion king that were assigned the mission as well.
None of them aware of the danger that lurked ahead or of their extra tagging along just in case when they were well on their way to the Heart Kingdom as per the client's request, until it was far too late, the only reason Rui knew something was going on.
Was when the sky darkened overhead and then there was a loud thundering crash as the steel chariot, one of Klaus's creations dropped to the earth like a fly without wings and with it their client "Damn it of course these bastards had to attack right as we were crossing the border" the Vice Captain of the Crimson Lion Kings cursed.
"Rui, go check on our client" Klaus ordered, already fighting against the Spade Kingdom knights, Rui nodded and flew swiftly in the direction the chariot had gone down, arriving in the nick of time to stop a spade kingdom knight from offing the high-ranking noble of Clover Kingdom.
He definitely didn't see her coming as she drew her blade "Fire Creation Magic: Searing Strike" was murmured as Rui lunged, wincing as the screams of the noble hurt her ears, in spite of that, she kept on attacking, trying to drive the enemy away.
And just as her current opponent began his retreat 4 more took his place, meaning that Klaus and the others hadn't managed to hold them off "Must be a newbie, should be easy to kill her" one of them said in a malicious tone.
Edging nearer to the noble "I won't let you h..hurt her" Rui declared quietly, thinking on her feet pretty much, though she wasn't sure how to make the enemy back away from the one she was meant to be protecting, thankfully upon noticing something out of the corner of her eye, she relaxed slightly.
Realizing that there was still someone on her side able to fight as she threw a ball of white fire trying to drive the enemy back, it worked for the most part as she reached the side of the noble "You've got to save me, I can't die" who suddenly clung on to Rui, begging to be saved.
It was the chance the enemy was waiting for, the moment when she was distracted and as Rui saw the four spells heading towards her, she panicked before "Fire Creation Magic: Cloak of White Flames" she uttered the words to a spell she had only just managed to use a few days ago.
Covering herself in a cape of flames, then quickly spun taking the noble with her as she turned her back on the enemy and the spells, bracing herself for impact, "World Tree Magic: Great Mistilteinn Tree" just before the spells reached her, a familiar voice called out.
And a massive tree began growing "Heh if you think this is enough to stop us, your dead wrong" one of the enemies said, using a spell that controlled spells already active to swerve around the tree as it caught him and his comrades.
Rui looked over her shoulder, pale white eyes wide before gripping onto the noble and digging her feet into the ground, the spell slammed into her with all the force of a rampaging bull, but she remained standing through sheer determination on her part.
"Nakamura-san" the captain called in worry, a little surprised that the enemy had managed to get around his magic ability, Rui raised her head where she'd laid it protectively over the noble who was entirely unharmed and met his gaze cautiously.
It was obvious to see that she was hurt "I'm fine Captain, what about the others" Rui asked quietly, worrying for her comrades now that the immediate threat had been dealt with, William frowned, also concerned, but chose to focus on his new recruit for the time being.
"We're well Rui, sorry one of them put a decent fight and trapped us in a barrier so that we couldn't assist you" Klaus, having heard the question of concern, appeared alongside the members of the Crimson Lion King already beginning to feel guilty when he noticed that the young girl was injured from a spell.
Surprisingly however their client was fine as she was separated from Rui, allowing the captain of the golden dawn to tend to her injuries "Leave the rest to us Sir" Klaus saluted, rising once more in his steel chariot, leaving Rui alone with the captain.
"But I can still finish" Rui whispered, reaching for her broom in order to continue her mission, a gentle hand on her arm stopped her however "Sir" she looked up into purple eyes, feeling the sting of tears in her own as he shook his head.
Then lifted her carefully onto his own broom to take back to HQ "It's not that I don't think you can finish Nakamura-san, but we don't know what kind of spell that was, it's better to be cautious for now" William explained calmly.
Sensing her disappointment over not being allowed to finish her first mission "Oh...right I understand Captain" Rui murmured, leaning her head against his back, feeling tired all of a sudden, her muscles seized, causing her to lose her grip on the captain and with that she began to fall.
William instantly noticed that the extra weight on his room was missing "Nak...Rui-san" he shouted, seeing the girl fall, in a flash he was on his feet and diving after the new member of his squad to catch her neatly, but Rui was unconscious because of the spell that had hit her.
He had no other choice at this point but to hold her as he flew and upon his return Rui was rushed away to the medical ward "How is she Captain" Klaus asked when he returned hours later after finishing the mission upon delivering his report that the rest of the mission had gone well.
"Unconscious I'm afraid, it was a type of paralysis/sleep spell that hit Nakamura-san according to the healer that examined her and it could be a couple of days before she wakes" William said, reading the report he was given by Klaus, even after he'd already heard all the details needed, he was a thorough sort.
Klaus grit his teeth, guilt eating away at him as he was dismissed and without truly thinking about it, his feet led him to the medical ward of HQ "Rui" Klaus grimaced, seeing her small form on a bed that practically swallowed her, skin paler than normal as she slept.
Later that night after Klaus had fussed over the young girl for an hour or so, William stopped by the medical ward to check on his new recruit and found her still fast asleep, but looking better than the last time he'd seen her, as he turned to leave, his shoes squeaked loudly on the marble flooring.
A soft hum drew his gaze onto Rui who blinked awake at the loud noise "Captain" Rui whispered, seeing nothing but a blur at the moment, but the blur looked familiar, she must have guessed correctly as to who it was when footsteps, familiar ones, headed towards her.
"Sleep Rui, you need it" William ordered kindly, patting her head gently, drawing a soft blush onto her cheeks at the action, once he was sure she was sleeping, he left the ward as quietly as he'd come in, and from that moment on Rui gained a tiny crush on her captain, that would only continue to grow over the years.
