Aha! I'm writing again! I have some signal, so hopefully this won't be the only chapter this week!
Liz's POV
Something shakes her shoulder, waking her.
"Go away" She mutters into the pillow. She doubted whoever it was understood what she said.
"Rise and shine Greenie!" Says a distinctly British voice. "Job training today."
She sighs, rolling over, covering her eyes with her arm. "Fine" She says with a sigh.
After a few seconds, she removed her arm from her face, glaring at Newt. He stood there, arms crossed, trying to look serious. However, she could see the hint of a smile.
She sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Ok, ok...I'm up..." She felt drained, though she had slept quite well. She wanted to be home. She would have to force each and every smile and friendly word today.
"Ok, get ready, I'll be back in 10."
She watched as he left. She resisted the urdge to lie back down, but she forced herself to prepare for the day. she grabbed her hairbrush, detangling her beadhead. She eventaully managed to get the knots out, but her wavy hair poofed everywhere. She brushed it into a low ponytail.
She slipped on a clean t-shirt, jeans, and socks, managing to almost get stuck in her pants. She put her shoes on and grabbed her toothbrush, leaving Newt's room and going to the bathroom right outside.
"Oh thank God!" She breathed a sigh of relief . "It has a lock!" She went in, locking the door. She used the toilet, brushed her teeth, and went back to his room. She quickly applied some deodorant and mascara (Gotta be pretty).
She was sitting on the bed, 100% ready when Newt knocked on the door. She got up, opening it. He offered her a friendly smile, and she returned it, hoping it looked genuine.
Life in the glade would be rough, but she was insistant on making it work. This was what she had now, she didn't have a choice.
Newt walked her to the kitchen. Frypan supplied a full plate of eggs, bacon, and toast, accompanied by a large glass of orange juice. Newt started walking towards a half full table, and she unwillingly followed. She wanted to be alone, but he wasn't going to give her that option.
She barely ate, not really in the mood.
Newt gave her a look. "C'mon Greenie, gonna need the food, you've gotta work today, and we don't take snack breaks."
The other gladers at the table added their own comments.
"The food isn't that bad! I mean, not the best but oh well."
"The bacon and toast aren't bad, but these eggs? ugh, don't know how you already ate those Wes!"
"Dont be such a chicken Shank!"
The two bickered like brothers the whole rest of the meal. She listened in, and unknowingly ate most of her food.
"Alright Liz, time to work!" Newt got up, and she quickly followed.
"Today, you're with the Slicers. I'll walk you there." They were silent, and soon arrived.
Newt introduced her to Winston, the keeper of the Slicers. He was quiet, but friendly enough.
"Ehm, good luck Greenie, I'll be in the gardens if ya need anything."
She watched him walk away.
"Ok Greenie! first up, clean the animal pens." He handed her a scoop and gestured to an empty wheelbarrow and a dirty chicken coop.
She got to work, wanting to hurry so she could go sulk and read. She finished half an hour later. She had managed to keep herself relatively clean, but she was unprepared for what was about to happen.
"Time to slaughter the pig Greenie!" Winston shouted.
Her face went pale. "Uh...Ok," She said quietly. She should have been expecting this. That was what Slicers mainly did!
Winston had a pig tied down to a tab, it was screaming.
"Grab me that thing!" He shouted to her, gesturing to a dangerous looking killer weapon. She grabbed it with a shakey hand, giving it to him.
She didn't have to kill it, but she had to watch as Winston did. It wasn't pretty. The poor creature's screams cut off suddenly... She shuddered, trying to keep her breakfast down. She took in deep breaths.
"Oh no, do not puke!" Winston yelled.
"Relax.." She gasped. "Just...Need...A sec.."
She calmed herself. She helped him clean up the pig, gagging every so often. By lunchtime, she was bloody, tired, and nauseous. She didn't dare eat. She went to the edge of the 'Deadheads' as they called it and sat down, her back against a tree.
She stared at one of the walls which sat about 15 yards to her left. She thought she saw something on it, but figured she was just paranoid. But no, there it was again, a bug like creature, maybe half a foot long was scurrying up the wall. It stopped, clinging to a vine, it's beady eyes staring directly into hers. She didn't bother it, and it didn't bother her. They both stared at each other for quite some time.
"It's called a Beetle Blade."
She gasped in a breath, her body jolting slightly. She hadnt been expecting anyone else to be around here. She turned her head. Newt stood there, lips sqeezed together, trying not to laugh.
"You gotta warn me! That scared the crap out of me!" She said, staring daggers into him.
He just chuckled. "Sure Greenie...Didn't want food? I expected that. Being a slicer isn't for many people."
"I'm never going back there, that was awful."
"Ok, you'll work in the gardens with me for the rest of the day. I'm second in command, but I work there whenever I can."
She nodded. The gardens sounded a lot nicer than the bloodhouse. She got up, brushing the dirt of her legs.
"Alrighty, c'mon Greenie." He started walking towards the gardens.
"When are you gonna stop calling me that? I have a name ya know." She said with a sigh.
"Sorry Liz, it's habit. I've always called the Greenies, Greenies. I'll try my best to remember your preference."
She smiled slightly. Newt was one of the nicer people here, she likes hanging out with him.
They made it to the gardens. Newt showed her the basics, and she spent a few hours digging up potatoes and carrots.
By dinner time she was exhausted and sweaty.
"Can I shower before dinner?" She asked Newt.
"Yea, sure Gr...Liz. C'mon, I'll show you where they are. I'll have Fry save you a plate. I found the lock thing the creators sent up, and had Gally install it on one of the showers. Didn't mean to snoop, but it was on the top."
"You're fine, I'm the one who forgot to mention the lock."
They walked past the shower building. Gesturing to one of the back doors. "That one locks, I'm gonna go eat. I'll bring your food to my room in about thirty minutes." With that, he turned and walked to the kitchen.
She went over to Newt's room, grabbing some comfy clothes and shower necessities before returning to the shower.
She walked in, making sure it was locked properly. There was a sink, a toilet, a mirror and a shower in the small room. She stripped off her dirty clothes and stepped into the shower. She shrieked when she turned the water on, a freezing burst of water hitting her. She was quick to turn the knob to hot. The water warmed quickly, and she sighed, the heat calming her. She was quick about her shower, washing her hair and body first thing. She stood in the stream of water for a few minutes before she turned it off. She wrapped the towel around her and squeezed the water out of her hair.
Minutes later she was dressed in a plain tanktop and sweats, her wet hair braided down her back. She grabbed her dirty clothes, placing them in a sack by the counter labled. She-beans laundry. Shebean...Real cute. She rolled her eyes, making her way to Newt's room.
She layed out on the floor at the foot of the bed, book in hand. The book had gotten quite exciting, though it seemed that if these creators could send her herex what would stop them from sending them to an arena to kill each other?
Newt knocked on the door. "May I come in?"
"Yea, your all good." She replied. He opened the door, a plate of food in one hand.
He gave her a slight smile, handing her the plate. He walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed, gesturing for her to take a seat.
While she ate, he talked about some things that had happened earlier that day.
"So this kid, Jim, he's about 12 maybe, well, he was being a kid, and apparently pranked Gally, put itch powder in his pants. And Gally just...I'm suprised no one ended up in the slammer. He was furious. Gave everyone a good laugh though."
She smiled lightly. Kid's being Kid's. There was atleast something normal here.
He chattered on more while she finished eating. She was to work in the gardens again tomorrow, as she wasn't really supossed to work there yesterday. He glanced at his watch, only keepers and runners got those.
She had sat her plate down a few minutes before, and Newt picked it up.
"Oh, I can get that." She said with a smile
"No worries, it's getting late and I have to get all those shanks in order. I'll be by the kitchen, so I might aswell drop it off."
"Thanks."
"No problem, see you tomorrow, Liz."
"Yea."
She watched as he walked out. Once the door closed, she grabbed her book and sprawled out on the bed, falling asleep withen a few minutes.
