Chapter 02: An evening at the Heeler's
A/N: Being back with the evening of Kate's first day at Glasshouse Primary School. For information: 'text' means thoughts; (text) means stage direction or sounds.
It's afternoon and Bluey's Dad was at school to get his daughter. „Mr Heeler could I have a minute please?" That were the first words Bandit heard when he arrived there. 'Something's up. Calypso normally don't want to speak to me the moment I arrive here.' „Sure, Calypso. Bluey, prepare for going home." „Sure, Dad." He couldn't wait for Calypso to spill the beans so he began to speak the moment they entered her room for preparation. „So, what's up. Did something happen with Bluey or did she start to be bossy again?" „No, don't worry about that. In fact I'm proud of her being there for our new student. The problem is that Kate's father called. He had to go to the hospital with his son and so he can't be there for his daughter for he has to spend the night in the hospital." „Who is Kate? I don't know her. Do I know her?" He was a little confused. „No, Mr Heeler. You don't. She's our new student and since Bluey did a good job on being there for her I thought Kate could spend the night with Bluey. If it's not too much trouble of course." „I don't know. It's a bit sudden. May I call Chilli about that first?" „But of course."
„Kate, I need to talk to you. Would you please come here?" „Of course, Mrs Calypso. Bye, Bluey. See you tomorrow." Waving at each other Kate went to talk to Calypso while Bluey got into her seat. „(click) I've met a new girl today." Bluey started to tell her father the events of the day. „We were wandering around and I showed her everything in school and she started teaching me to read and then I could borrow one of her books and ..." At that very moment she looked out of the window and noticed they weren't moving. „Dad, why don't we drive home?" „Because we don't have everything yet" was the only answer she got. „What do you mean?" „You'll see."
A minute after that Kate came running towards the Heeler's car. „Bluey" she yelled. „I'm going to stay at your family's house tonight." „For real life? Dad, you knew it right?" „Of course, mate. Calypso talked to me about it. And I talked with your mother so it's okay. I didn't know she's a cat, though. But … it's fine with me." Telling the events of the day were out of question now, of course. Bluey and Kate chatted the whole drive to the Heeler's house where they were greeted by Chilli and Bingo. Well, at least Bluey was greeted. They were a bit shocked to see that the new girl was a cat for they never heard of a cat walking and talking like a dog. „Good evening, Bluey's Mum. Thank you that I'm invited to stay over for the night. And you've got to be Bingo. Am I right? Bluey told me a lot about you. My name's Kate. My father moved here last week and now I'm going to be Bluey's classmate. It's nice to meet you." „Nice to meet you, too, Kate. Quick question, What do you want to eat for dinner and tomorrow for breakfast?" „I don't have anything I don't eat for dinner so anything you normally would eat is fine with me. For breakfast I'd like to have cereals or a nice fruit salad, if you please." „But of course." Chili answered. „Cereals? Fruit salad? She's just like Bluey with breakfast." she said to herself while entering the house to prepare dinner. „Have fun, kids!" Bandit said. „But be sure not to be bossy. Especially you, Bluey. You remember our deal?" „Dad, I haven't been bossy in a while." „Yeah, you were" Bingo added all of a sudden. „You were bossy last weekend. When we were playing on the trampoline." Bluey tried to stop Bingo from telling by holding one of her fingers to her mouth while holding her other paw outstretched and waving 'no'. „Is that so? Guess that means you don't get your ice cream today." „That's not fair. I weren't being bossy. Bingo just weren't doing it right. When we are on the trampoline you always tell us to zip the net shut. So we don't fall off and hurt ourself. That is what I wanted her to do. So I wasn't bossy just responsible." Bluey defended herself. Kate didn't really know what to think of that situation. She just hoped they would soon stop arguing but didn't want to interrupt. „Is that true Bingo? Did she tell you to zip the net shut?" „Erm … Yeah, I guess so. But she was still bossy." „No, Bingo. She's right. That's not being bossy." „(gasp) Does that mean I'm going to get my ice cream?" „Yes, it does, mate. Do you want one, too?" „Kate likes ice cream, too. She told us in school." „Bluey, I'm sure Kate can talk. I heard her do so all the way back. So she can answer my question on her own. So, do you want some?" „Sure, Bluey's dad. I'd like to have some. Thank you very much." Kate was happy that the argument seemed to be over and she was included in the conversation again. „Sure thing, kiddo. But you don't have to be so formally with us. It's good for when you meet new people but now you can drop it." „Okay."
„Dinner's ready!" Chilli called. „Go, wash your hands." „Okay, Mum" Bluey answered. She still wanted to play a bit more for Kate just showed them a new game. But the idea of seeing how Kate would eat her mothers dinner peaked her interest. She was proud to be Chilli's daughter although her mum had a lot more work to do than her dad and thus less time to play. But when she has time to play they almost always have fun. So she would like to see her new friend tasting her mum's cooking. „Here you go. Do you want to have some vegetables, Kate?" „Yes, please." „Here you are." After everyone had their meal they started eating with Bingo telling them what happened at Kindy that day. Kate tried the meal and really liked it the moment it hit her tounge. „Wow" she whispered to herself. „I wish I could cook like that. (Louder:) That tastes great, Bluey's mum. Can you teach me the recipe, please? I'd like to cook it at home for my father and brother" she asked. „I don't know, dear. I'm not comfortable to teach a child how to use a frying pan or really sharp knives. I'm afraid I can't do that, I'm sorry." „It's okay. I just thought I asked." „I'm sorry. But I can write down the recipe for you if you like." „Yes, thank you. I'd like that." Kate said smiling.
She loved being in this house. „You know" she said. „Back at my home there isn't so much fun at dinner time. Or breakfast. Or anytime." The last part she nearly whispered. But even then they heard for they listened. „Bluey, Bingo" Chilli said, „would you please put your plates into the dishwasher once you're finished?" „Why should we do that?" Bluey asked. „Because," Bandit decided to take part in the conversation, „we have to have a talk with Kate." „But what about our ice cream?" „What ice cream?" Chilli asked. „Dad promised that Kate and me could have ice cream." „(Sigh) Okay, but first we'll have the talk with Kate. And you have to put away your dishes, too. Deal?" „Okay, Mum. Oh, can Bingo and me play while you talk?" „Sure thing, kiddo."
„So, Kate, do you want to have some tea or something?" Chilli asked. „No, thank you, Bluey's mum. I'd rather have the talk with you about whatever you want to talk about." „All right" Chilli said sitting down next to Kate. „I think you didn't do it on purpose but you said something about your family life. Would you like to talk about it?" „Erm … actually I don't. I don't feel like it." Chilli and Bandit changed a look. „Okay, dear. We won't ask further but please know that you can come to us when you want to talk. Every time one of us is coming to school. Or you can talk to Calypso. Whatever you favour." „Okay, thank you. I'll … I'll think about it." „That's good. So, how about you get some ice cream now" Bandit asked. „Go, look for Bluey and Bingo while I prepare your ice cream." „Yay." Excited Kate left the kitchen to get the other two girls. „You prepare the ice cream while I call Calypso. There's something bugging me. I'm afraid we will have to deal with her family life soon enough."
„That's it, girls. Go brush your teeth and then it's up to bed." „Sure, Dad. Come on, Kate. You can use my toothbrush." „Thanks, Bluey." The girls went to the bathroom to brush their teeth. „Huh? That was easy. Too easy." Bandit was right of course. He went after them only to see the girls fooling around in the bathroom. „Girls, stop it." he said. „Okay, Mr Bluey's dad. Sorry" „Kate, why are you sorry?" „But, Bluey. I think your dad will get angry if we don't stop." „Don't worry, Kate. Dad normally don't get angry if we play instead of doing what he said." „I will. This time I'm serious, girls. Brush your teeth! Now!" „Alright, Dad. (whispering) He's very cereal." „Cereal?" „Huh? Oh, you don't know yet. I usually use 'cereal' instead of 'serious'" „I see."
„Kate?" Bluey asked. „Do you want to sleep in my bed? I can sleep with Bingo." „Actually, erm, I wanted to ask if you could sleep with me. I usually sleep with my little brother and now I'm missing him." „Oh," Bluey answered giving Kate a pitiful look. „Okay. Let's do it. But first: DAD!" she called. „I'm here. Are you kids in bed already?" „All set and ready for the bedtime story." „Okay, so which one do you want to hear?" „Maybe a true one again?" „(Sigh) Okay, but just a short one. Once upon a time ..."
The girls were sleeping before Bandit could finish his story. After ultimately tucking in Bingo he went over to Bluey's bed. „Good night, sweetheart" he whispered. „I'm so proud of you." He then gave her a small kiss on the cheek and left the room while leaving the door open a bit as usual.
