When she first woke up, Toph knew that there was something that felt…different about the world. The best way she could begin to describe it, was that the energies were off.
And then when she heard someone begin to speak, Toph couldn't understand them at all. To her, it just sounded like a bunch of gibberish. And sure, she knew that different regions of the world had unique dialects - but there was at least one national language that everybody learned from birth. So that way there wouldn't be any miscommunications between traders or ambassadors to a nation's ruler.
Letting out a disgruntled sigh, Toph opened her eyes and sat up in the bed she was in before listening to a bit more. And once she figured out where the voice was coming from, she realized that there was at least more than one person talking. Then what she had originally thought.
Two of them at the least, sounded light and feminine and the other three sounded more masculine.
Turning her head towards where the voices were coming from, Toph cleared her throat to let them know that she was awake. Before she then brought up a finger to her ear - when one of the females started to speak in her direction - and shook her head. In order to let them know that she didn't understand a single word they were saying. Before she then waved a hand in front of unseeing eyes - because while most people were able to figure out she was blind rather quickly, it also helped to show that she was.
A moment passed in silence, and she heard one of the male voices say a single phrase. Before out of nowhere, Toph found that she could suddenly understand the meaning behind the gibberish the people were speaking.
"Are you able to understand us now, my dear girl?" An elderly male voice said, his tone kind and gentle.
Toph gave them her best glare. Something that Katara always said 'could frighten grown men'. "Yes, I can. What language even was that? And WHY can i suddenly understand it!"
"Y-you couldn't understand English?" This time, a younger male voice spoke. And if Toph had to guess, he was probably around her age. If the cracks in his voice gave any indication.
Toph blinked. "What the hell is English!" She demanded while starting to feel very confused. "And no, I couldn't. Not before the old fart did something to where I could. It honestly sounded like a bunch of gibberish - like a made-up language." At saying that, Toph grinned mischievously.
"English is not a made-up language, young lady!" This time a female spoke, and judging from her tone - it sounded like she was personally insulted by her comment.
"Then how come I've never heard of it before now?" Toph challenged the unknown woman, playfully. "My parents are nobility in the Earth Kingdom, and growing up I was taught every dialect. Simply due to the fact that they are well connected among the three Nation's."
"Earth Kingdom?" A male voice spoke, his tone sounding almost condescending. "Nation's? There's no such thing. Unless you mean of course, the United Nation's. But given your age, I highly doubt it."
Now Toph felt confused - and slightly agitated. What did this guy mean there was no such thing as the Earth Kingdom or the three Nation's? "Bullshark! What do you mean that they don't exist?" Toph took a deep breath in before sighing. "Now, I'm only going to ask ONCE. Where in the blazes am I?!"
