A grumbling stomach woke Shadow from his slumber, glancing to the nearby clock he saw the numbers '12:17' glowing back at him. For a second he was confused about where he was, like anyone else when they wake up in the middle of the night, but it quickly came back to him.
After he had dealt with Black Doom and the Black Arms, Rouge had offered to let Shadow stay at her place until he could figure what he was going to do with himself. Shadow figured it was better than sleeping on some random bench in Westopolis, although he would miss Carl and his stories dearly. So for the past couple of nights, he had been sleeping on the living room couch of Rouge's Central City apartment.
Another grumble stirred the dark hedgehog from his thoughts, realizing that this wasn't going to stop on its own Shadow sighed as he pulled himself off the couch and started his trek towards the kitchen.
Unfortunately, despite Professor Gerald designing him as the Ultimate Lifeform it seems those designs didn't include enhanced night vision; in fact, Shadow wasn't sure he even had regular night vision as his leg hit an end table, grumbling slightly at the dull pain that was sent through it.
After a few seconds, Shadow managed to make it to the kitchen doorway with breaking anything (as far as he was aware of at least). The dark hedgehog fumbled around on the wall he thought had the light switch and after a few minutes of finding nothing, Shadow let out an annoyed sigh and continued into the kitchen blind.
After fumbling around in the dark for a few minutes Shadow's hand hit the pantry door; ignoring the faint pain, the dark hedgehog opened the pantry to reveal various food stuffs lining its shelves.
Well, it would have if the lights were on.
Within the further darkness of the pantry, Shadow spotted a small cylinder that appeared to be a can of nuts, grabbing and shaking it seemed to confirm his suspicions as he heard the contents rattle about.
Pulling the lid off and setting it aside, Shadow grabbed a handful of snack nuts and shoveled them into his mouth "Hmph, not half bad, although I didn't know that there was a type of nut with a bitter taste." the dark hedgehog pondered as he greedily consumed his snack.
Suddenly, the lights turned on and quickly looking around Shadow spotted Rouge, dressed in loose pajamas with a set of hair rollers, half asleep standing next to the light switch, which he could now see was on the opposite wall from the one he checked.
"Shadow, If you're going to get a late night snack at least try not to make so much noise-" Rouge began as she walked into the room, only to pause for a moment as she took in the scene "Are you eating coffee beans?"
Shadow glanced down at his hand to see that yes he was holding a can of coffee beans, Knothole brand coffee according to the label, which did go a long way to explain the taste.
"...Yes." the hedgehog neutrally replied before calmly jamming another couple dozen beans into his mouth.
Rouge stared blankly as Shadow continued eating the coffee beans, thousands of possible questions and responses running through her head, before the bat remembered how late it was. "Just... try to be quieter..." Rouge dully stated before stretching and yawning as she finished "Some of us like to get our full eight hours."
Rouge exited the kitchen, leaving Shadow to finish his unconventional snack and by the morning the pair would be in the trawls of an augment over why depriving the homeowner of their morning cup of coffee was poor house guest etiquette.
But that's a story for another day...
maybe...
if I feel like it...
probably not tho.
