SONG: Almost, almost is never enough...So close to being in love ~Almost Is Never Enough by Ariana Grande and Nathan Sykes
Chapter 5
Scott:
I caught her before she could slide out of her desk.
"Lydia, Lydia." I shook her gently but nothing, then her nose started to bleed. Quickly I swooped her up in my arms and carried her past the harried teacher and shocked students and out the door. Heading out I saw doors open and teachers and students alike crowding the hall to see what was going on. I caught Isaacs eye as I walked by. He gave me a raised eyebrow.
"Grab our stuff, would you? Meet us at my house, tell Allison and Stiles also. And tell Stiles I got his jeep." I directed, quietly so only he could hear me. He nodded to me.
I went right to Stile's jeep. Since I didn't have keys to Lydia's car, and I knew how to start his jeep without a key. I placed her in the passenger seat and quickly ran around the front to the driver's side. Pulling out the screwdriver, he kept in the console I started it up and peeled out of the lot. I pulled out my phone and dialed the hospital.
"Beacon Hills Memorial, how can I direct your call?" the nurse answered.
"Can you please page Melissa McCall for me. It's an emergency?"
"Hold please."
I looked over to make sure she was okay. Reaching over I wiped the blood from her nose.
"Hang on Lydia."
"This is Melissa."
"Mom."
"Scott?"
"Yeah, I know you're working but I need your help. Is there any way you can get home right now."
"What's wrong?"
"It's Lydia, she blacked out in class and her nose is bleeding. I would take her to the hospital but-."
"No, I understand. I'll meet you there in fifteen minutes."
"Okay, thanks." I disconnected the call as I sped down my street and whipped into my driveway.
I rushed to open the back door to the house before going back and pulling Lydia from the car. Carrying her inside I kicked the door shut and ran up the stairs to my room and laid her on my bed. I grabbed a cloth from my bathroom and wet it then wiped the remaining blood from her. Her nose had stopped bleeding, but she still wasn't awake yet. She was paler than usual, but I could see the color starting to return slowly. I tossed the cloth into the bathroom and pulled a chair up to the bed.
My phone buzzed and I pulled it out to see a text from Stiles.
STILES: There's no way they are letting the rest of us out before the end of school with only 1 more class. Isaac put your bags in Lydia's car. I'll drive it over after class. Take care of her Scott.
SCOTT: Will do.
I responded and dropped my phone on the bed. I smoothed her hair back from her face and grabbed hold of her hand. She looked serene, as if she were sleeping, not at all like she was in any pain. Her eyelids jumped and fluttered as if dreaming and I felt a slight pressure of her hand in mine.
My instincts were extra heightened even though I knew she probably wasn't in any danger right now. Every sound registered, dogs barking, birds chirping, radios in passing cars. I don't think I would relax until I was completely sure she was fine. I didn't like seeing her like this. So vulnerable. Especially after what happened in class. I heard the door open downstairs and at once recognized the scent.
"Scott?"
"Up here?" I called back. I heard her come up the stairs and then she came into the room with her stethoscope still around her neck and a travel medical bag in hand.
"What happened?" she asked coming over to check on her.
"We were in class, and she had a premonition, but it was a really strong one, she started panicking and seizing up and I couldn't pull her out of it. She screamed and then just kind of snapped out of it, but she was hyperventilating and then she blacked out and her nose started bleeding."
She checked her eyes and listened to her heart and checked her pulse before opening her bag.
"I didn't want to take her to the hospital in case she panicked. The last thing we need is a banshee scream there."
"Right." She agreed, holding up an emergency packet of smelling salt.
"Well, she seems to be fine. More than likely it was the adrenaline rush that caused the hyperventilation and passing out. It could also lead to nosebleeds. So now we just need to wake her."
"Here, let me. You should go out into the hall just in case and cover your ears." I held out my hand for the packet. She handed it to me and went out into the hall.
Snapping the packet, I held it under Lydia's nose and waited. Seconds later she sprang up and let out a piercing scream. Grabbing hold of her I held her to my chest letting her scream there instead, ignoring the short burst of pain it caused.
"Shh, shh, I got you. You're okay."
"He's dead. He's dead. He's dead." She gripped me, trembling.
"Not yet and not if I can help it."
"But he fell. I saw it. He fell." She reiterated looking up at me.
"He will not die. I won't let it happen. I promise." I told her determinedly.
She buried her head in my chest again.
I looked up to see my mom standing in the doorway staring at us with a smile on her face. I gave her a questioning look, but she shook her head and came in.
"Lydia."
Lydia looked up startled and then smiled, her cheeks pinking up.
"Hi Ms. McCall."
"Hi Sweetheart. Let me get a look at you."
Lydia pulled away and faced her but kept one hand gripping my arm. My mother checked her over.
"How are you feeling? Any nausea, dizziness, anything?"
"No, mostly just feeling tired now and embarrassed."
"The tiredness is understandable. Adrenaline crash can cause that."
"And you don't have anything to be embarrassed about." I told her.
"I freaked out in class in front a room full of students and a teacher. Then I faint like some stupid damsel in distress." She huffed rolling her eyes.
"With all the things that have happened in that school, this is nothing."
"Yeah, tell me that again tomorrow when I'm getting stares and hearing whispers."
"Screw them. They don't matter. As long as you're okay that's all that matters. Okay?"
She nodded.
"Why don't you get some rest? I'll wake you up when the others get here."
"Okay. Thanks." She laid back down.
"Anytime." I grabbed a throw from my closet and covered her up as her eyes closed.
My mom was smiling again as she watched me. I nodded my head at the door, and we left Lydia to rest, closing the door behind us. Back downstairs we sat at the dining room table.
"So…" my mom started. She gave me a knowing look and a playful smirk. I groaned internally. I could play dumb, but I know she would call me on it. I could try to ignore it and switch the topic, but she would just bring it right back. She wouldn't fall for any of it.
"Yeah." I admitted.
"When did this start?"
"nothing's started. More than likely it never will."
"Why is that?" she tilted her head at me.
"It's complicated." I sighed.
"Mmmm, how so?" she propped her chin on her hand and stared at me.
"Mom." I groaned.
"Scott." She mocked. She wasn't going to relent, and either now or later she would force an explanation out of me.
"Alright, so Lydia is…she's amazing mom. Smart, funny, snarky, sweet, brave but also vulnerable with this power of hers and she is so damn beautiful it's ridiculous. She takes all of this in stride even when things like this happen. Like, I know that once the effects of this wear off and once, we get this settled she will be back to her normal self. She's just…"
"Amazing." Mom finished.
"Right."
"Okay so what's the problem?"
"I'm not the only one that thinks that. I'm not the only one that sees her for who she is and think she's perfect."
"Who else?"
"Stiles."
"Oh."
"Yeah. And he's felt this way about her since we were all kids."
"Are they dating?"
"No, they never have. He's always pined for her but never actually pursued her."
"And now you feel as if you can't either… because of him."
"I can't. Stiles is my best friend. I couldn't do that to him. It would crush him."
"But you have feelings for her."
"So many feelings. Overwhelming feelings. The kind of feelings that almost made me go for Isaac's throat when he said something about her that I know wasn't serious and he would never do. I actually had to take off to calm down." I clenched my fists hard. "But I can't do anything about these feelings. I can just… survive them I guess."
"Oh Scott," she sighed placing her hand over mine. "My sweet boy. I love that you are considering your friends feelings and I understand why. But honey, if you feel this strongly about her then you won't be able to suppress those feelings for long. It's going to leak out or its going to explode. Have you tried talking to him about this?"
"I can't. I really can't. We had a talk last week and he said he was ready to give up on his crush and maybe start dating because he was sure that he was eternally friend zoned by her. But it was like it hurt him to even admit that. I think he wants to get over this, but I don't think he will ever completely let go of the idea of them being together, you know."
"Scott, listen to me. You can't go through life sacrificing your happiness for everyone else. That's a horrible way to live. It's great that you are worried about Stiles and his feelings, but what about yours?"
"Mine don't matter. Not in this."
"Yes, they do."
"No, they don't. It doesn't matter how amazing I think she is. It doesn't matter how just being around her makes me feel happier, lighter. It doesn't matter that I lo-." I stopped.
"That you love her?" my mom finished. I closed my eyes and gripped my hair in anger, in frustration in… everything and anything.
"It doesn't matter. Because he loved her first and he still does. And as much as it hurts, I could never do that to him."
She gave me a sympathetic look.
"I just can't."
Lydia:
I woke up feeling refreshed and cuddled deeper into the pillow under my head and the smell of aftershave tickling my nose, a familiar aftershave at that. I gasped as I sat up looking around. Scott's room, I was in his room. I was on his bed. Well, that's a trip in a half. It took me a minute to remember why. The vision, passing out, his mom. Raking my fingers through my tangled hair I tossed off the cover and stumbled into his bathroom to freshen up.
Coming out I saw not Scott sitting on the bed but Stiles. He looked deep in thought his head hanging. He looked up when I came out and gave me a halfhearted smile.
"Hey, where is everyone?" I asked.
"Allison and Isaac went with Scott. My dad wanted to ask him something and he wanted to pick up his bike from school. They should be back soon."
"Oh, okay." I took a seat in the chair Scott had pulled up to the bed. My mind searched for something to say, anything. But the air was thick was tension and awkwardness. Rubbing my hands over my thighs, I looked around the room. Posters of athletes and singers on the wall, a half full laundry basket in the corner with a pair of jeans hanging out. A couple of pairs of tennis shoes shoved against a wall. His desk with cluttered with books, everything from comic books to actual literature and pictures of him and his mom, one of a little boy and a man that looked a little like Scott, so I am assuming that's him and his dad. There was an open copy of Art of War on his nightstand on top of his alarm clock. It was a typical teen boy's room.
"Can I ask you something?" Stile's asked. I looked at him and nodded slowly. I inhaled deeply and let it out slowly, suddenly feeling uncomfortable.
"Did you ever see me as an option?"
I froze. My mouth opened and closed a few times, but I completely blanked on what to say, not sure how to answer this.
"Truth, Lydia. In all the time that we have known each other. With the things we have been through in even just the last year. Did you ever once see me as a possibility?"
He deserved the truth, but I didn't want to hurt him. I didn't want to give him false hope either. With a deep breath I just put it out there.
"Yes, a few times."
He nodded.
"The first time was when you tried to save me from Peter and stayed with me to try to protect me. The last time was when… we kissed when you had your panic attack. I thought that maybe I could. That maybe we could… give it a shot."
He nodded again.
"And now?" he asked, not looking at me.
"No." I whispered. His shoulders slumped and his eyes closed. I went to him and kneeled in front of him to catch his eyes. "Stile's you are one of my best friends and one of the best people I know. You're incredible and I know that you will be an amazing boyfriend for someone. But it just can't be me."
He cleared his throat and rubbed his face.
"I'm sorry, I don't want to hurt you. I never want to hurt you. But I can't lie to you either. I'm… sorry."
"I get it. I uh, its fine. I just… I'm going to use the bathroom. Why don't you head downstairs? They should be back any minute." He stood up and walked around me into the bathroom shutting the door with a resounding click.
I sighed and got up, leaving the room and going downstairs to the living room. I was only there a minute before the doors opened and in walked the rest of the crew.
"Lydia. I'm so glad you're okay." Allison rushed over to hug me.
"Yeah, she was chomping at the bit to get to you, but we had to finish school. they've been really anal about attendance after the whole human sacrifice thing." Isaac said starting to walk over to us but stopped when Scott growled again.
"Dude, I already apologized, and you know I'm not going to do anything." He said exasperatedly but still chose to lean against a wall opposite from where we were. Allison just shook her head and dragged me over to sit on the couch further away from him.
Scott stared him down for a minute before turning to me.
"where's Stiles?"
"Upstairs."
"I'll go get him." Scott took the stairs 2 at a time.
The feeling of guilt gnawed at me as I watched him go.
"what's that look for?" Allison whispered to me. I just shook my head at her and mouthed 'later.' She nodded in understanding.
"Okay, so we finally have a when to go with the where, we just need the who now." Scott started as he and Stile's made their way back down.
Stile's didn't really look up, just went, and stood next to Isaac. Scott gave him a weird look but didn't say anything.
"Tell us about this vision and we can go from there." Allison suggested. So, I went over everything I saw.
"So, you saw him fall, did you actually predict his death, like do you have a feeling now that he is for real dead, or will be?" Isaac asked. I thought about what he said and no I still didn't get the usual feeling I get when someone is going to die.
"Actually no. I don't have that feeling of dread I usually have when someone dies. Just the vision showing him fall. But… now that I think about it, I think… something might have intervened, or someone. I didn't see anyone else up there, but I got the feeling that even though Scott lost his grip, and the kid was falling that something happened to save him. I just don't know what."
"Well, that's great but unless we know who this kid is then we are still kind of going in half blind. Did you see anything of this kid besides what you already told us? Like maybe what he was wearing, if he has any noticeable scars, a name." Stiles said sharply. I flinched back.
"Stiles." Scott barked.
"Fine, sorry. I'm just… so what's the plan?" he asked.
"The plan has not changed. I notified my mom to be on the lookout. Isaac and I will head over to the hospital after practice tomorrow and be on the lookout." Scott explained staring hard at his best friend with a what the hell look.
"And the rest of us?" Allison asked.
"Keep your phones handy. Just in case. I am hoping that we can resolve this quickly but just in case things go sideways be ready to move."
Everyone nodded.
"well, this has been… interesting but I got homework so tomorrow it all goes down. We have a plan, and everything should be roses and sunshine now." Isaac said turning for the stairs.
"Wait, Scott what did my dad want?" Stile's asked.
"Oh, help with an old case. A missing girl from 8 years ago but now that he's in the know he thinks it was supernatural related. He was hoping I would maybe catch a scent or something from the girls room. He wants us to take a look." He explained.
"Sounds good. I'll ask him more about it tonight. I'm going to get going. I have homework to do and a project to finish." Stiles said, with a quick wave he was gone before we could blink. Scott looked confused, Allison looked sympathetic, and Isaac just shrugged and headed upstairs.
