AN: Just a story I had here for a long time... decided to put it out there to see if anyone is intersted, so let me know and I might keep writing it
Also, English is not my 1st language, so I apologize for any mistakes...
Abby was apprehensive, waiting for Bill to show up and talk to her about some kid who he needed her help with. Marcus was not picking up the phone, no matter how million times she tried, and she felt right down in her gut that she would have to make some important decisions even without her husband's say in it.
"Hi, Ms. Kane?" asked a young man, who she had never seen before
"Yes, you are?" the man shook her hand and smiling slightly
"Sorry, I'm Dean. Bill asked me to meet you, he says he's sorry, but an emergency showed up" she remained silent, still taken aback by the social worker's absence "A kid Oded, tough scenario you know" she sighed. She hated all that these kids went through in the system
"Ok. So, what is this about?"
"Bellamy Blake" the young man said "He's leaving juvenile detention today"
"He's in juvie?" that might be too much for her. She had her kids to think about
"Yeah, but he's a nice kid. Just had it really tough you know. He's sixteen and needs a place to stay. Bill says that you and Marcus would be the perfect fit for him. At least for a few weeks, until we find something more permanent" at that moment, they saw the boy walking down the stairs of the precinct, with a busted lip and Abby had shivers all over her. He looked so tired and sad. She watched him, while he grew nervous about something and started asking desperately
"Where's she? Octavia, where is she?" he asked, and no one answered
"Hello there Bellamy" Dean tried to be nice, but the boy wasn't having it
"Where is Bill? He said I'd see Octavia on my way out"
"Well, I'm sure he'll talk to you later and explain everything. This is Abby Kane, Abby this one here is Bellamy" she looked at him and he just glared at her, face hurt, holding tears as he was once again being treated as an animal needing shelter, waiting expectantly for his fate to be announced. "If you're not up for it, I'm sure I can find a group home or something" at that she saw pleading in the boy's eyes, and her heart clenched
"It's only for a few weeks right" she said, and her decision was made.
Bellamy was very quiet and guarded, Abby noticed. She hadn't heard many words coming from him on the way home, and now even less, while she introduced him to the twins. They were all gathered around the kitchen table, while Raven talked about how they were also fostered by Abby and Marcus and how they got adopted by the couple when they were ten. The fifteen-year-old pair of twins seemed happy and cared for enough, and as surprising at it was, that didn't seem to be a bad home. He just wasn't sure yet. You can never assume the foster kids to be treated the same as the real ones, even if they're adopted, right?
"Do you play videogames?" Jasper, the quieter twin, asked and Bellamy shrugged
"Oh, hi honey" Abby said, turning their attention to another teenager, a little older than the twins. She was blonde, blue eyed and had a sweet smile. "Glad you made it to dinner"
"Hi mom" she said, letting her backpack by the stairs before getting her seat "And who is this?" she asked, noticing Bellamy at the end of the table
"Oh, this is Bellamy. He's gonna stay with us for a while, that is Clarke" she said, now looking at the boy. Something about the girl made Bellamy wanting to say something
"So, where did they get you? Walmart?" he said with a mocking smile. The twins were uncomfortable, but before Jasper said something, Abby jumped in
"Clarke is my biological daughter from my previous marriage" opting to ignore the boy's antics
"Oh, so you are the real kid" he said without looking at them, as if he said nothing major
"There's not such a thing as our real kid" Abby said
"Lasagna?" Clarke offered him, trying to sooth the tension. That's when Marcus showed up, and Bellamy tensed up even more. He was a cop. Fuck, fuck, fuck. He hated cops.
Abby and Marcus went outside the kitchen door, that faced the backyard, to talk about that situation, while the kids ended up eating their dinner, in utter silence. Marcus was pissed at Abby for bringing a foster kid to their home without talking to him beforehand. When he found out that he had came out of a juvenile facility, he was a lot more annoyed with the situation
"What were you thinking? We don't know if he's dangerous, we have our kids to think about" he said
"I know honey, I know. But you should have seen his face back there. Besides, I tried reaching you, but I couldn't get through"
"Yeah, I was at Clarke's exposition, I promised I'd drop by today remember?"
"I know, I know. Anyway, is just for a little while, he had nowhere else to go. He's just a kid Marcus! Besides, he was not in juvie for anything violent, he's not a violent kid"
"Why was he there then?"
"Seems like he damaged his former foster dad's car" she answered carefully "But I don't know the entire story yet"
"We can't save them all Abby" he said, and before she could say anything he continued "But I know how kind and generous your heart is, and I love you for it" and then he kissed her.
Abby was getting the living room ready for the boy to sleep in, after the couple talked to him about the house rules, while Kane went upstairs to talk to the other kids. He found Raven and Jasper talking in the girl's bedroom, and wasn't sure what they were talking about, since she was saying something in Spanish
"Hey, no Spanish" he reminded her while entering the room. He didn't have anything against the twins keeping their cultural roots, but they agreed that the siblings were not allowed to speak in Spanish in certain times, since over the years they used to do it just to leave their parents without any idea of what was going on and in what kind of trouble they were in.
"Hey dad" the girl said, and he seated beside her on the bed, with the boy not far from them
"Mom told me about what Bellamy said" he started "You know there's no such thing as the real kid right? You are ours just as much, we love you more than anything"
"We know" Jasper said
"Yeah, don't worry" Raven agreed. They talked a little, Marcus told Jasper to get to his room and ready for bed, while he went to Clarke's room, and found her at her desk, doing some homework.
"Hey" he said, seating at the end of her bed, while she turned in the chair to look at him
"Hi" she greeted the man who had become her second father and best friend "What's up?"
"So, I need your help to keep an eye on the new kid" at that he got Clarke's entire attention
"All right…" she said suspiciously "Why is that?" she knew how overprotective Kane was, so she needed to know his reasons to that conversation
"Mom and I don't want anyone knowing about this" he pointed, and when she nodded he continued "But Bellamy was in juvie"
"What? Why would you bring a juvenile delinquent to the house?"
"Well, he's not to be dangerous, and he is a nice kid" he said, regretting bringing this up to his older daughter "But I just want you to be aware, take care of your brother and sister" she nodded
"Alright"
"Alright" he smiled "Are you ready for the big presentation tomorrow?" he asked. Clarke was a great artist; she had an exposition going on that week and the next day she would be presenting her work to some of the most important panel of judges from different universities all over the country. She could get a scholarship over it.
"Yeah, a bit nervous"
"Don't worry honey, we'll all be there to support you" she smiled and nodded, before he got up and gave her a kiss on the forehead, wishing goodnight.
Meanwhile, Abby was trying to get to thru the boy downstairs. She had made the couch comfortable for him, and tried to talk to him now that they were alone in the room. She got a seat beside him on the couch
"So, who's Octavia?" she asked, and at that he looked directly at her, with those fearing eyes again "Is she your girlfriend? You seemed very upset that Bill hadn't taken her to see you" he thought about telling her the truth, maybe he could trust her…
"I really need to talk to her" he said, his voice trembling for the first time, but not managing to make himself clear
"Alright, did something happen?"
"Its… just, she…" he was trying, and Abby was proud that he was trying to open up to her. Just then, Marcus showed up with a change of clothes for the boy to sleep in. The boy just nodded in appreciation, without looking at him, or saying anything. Kane just sighed and went back to his room
"So, you were saying?" Abby tried to continue their conversation, but the boy was closed off again, clearly. Abby was nice to him, for now that is. The house seemed nice too. But he couldn't trust them with the most important thing in his life yet. Specially not Kane, he was a cop, he remembered. Cop's had never been good to him, or his precious Octavia "Okay" Abby said, noticing by his silence that he was done talking "Do you have a toothbrush?"
"How would I have a toothbrush?" he said, being the jerk he learned how to be, so he could protect himself. Abby sighed again
"You don't need to do this. We're on your side Bellamy" she said, and when he kept silent again, she got up.
When everyone was asleep, Bellamy made his way upstairs and found Clarke's door half open. Her cellphone was charging in her nightstand, so he approached silently, took the phone and went back downstairs to make a call. When the other line picked up, his heart beat fast with joy by rearing the voice he missed so much
"O? O, thank god is you" he said "How are you, are you okay? Are you hurt?" he almost whispered, so no one would listen "Shh it's okay, I'm out now. I'll go get you ok? I promise, I'll go get you, just hang tight" he promised.
Abby was getting through their laundry in their room, when Marcus showed up in his pajamas, helping her
"Thank you" she said, and he didn't answer, while he kept going through the clothes, just listening "So, I was thinking… And I know how mad I would've been if you had made such a huge decision without consulting me first. I'm sorry" Kane looked at her with a small smile
"It's fine, alright? I'm okay" he said "He's just not exactly the warmest kid I've ever met" he laughed a little and Abby smiled
"I really appreciate you making the effort. Means a lot to me"
"Of course honey" he said, taking the basket of clothes to put it away
"I just think that that poor boy has been thru so much… I mean, I'm just really glad que can give him a place to stay, that is safe, for now…" Kane went back to the bed
"For now… Since he doesn't mess up with our family is all good" he said, giving her a kiss "Now get out of my side please" he pushed Abby to her side of the bed, laughing.
"Do you wanna hear something strange?"
"Sure" he said laughing a bit more, while getting comfortable in the bed
"I talked to the twins about getting a meeting with their birth mom, like we talked about… But now they don't wanna do it"
"Not even Raven?"
"No, she says she's no ready" Abby laid her head in her husband's shoulder, and he kissed her head
"Well, go figure" he said.
The next day was almost a blur. First, Bellamy went to his new school (again, the story of his life: new family, new school, new house), which was the most amazing school he had ever attended. It was right on the beach, and he had never seen anything like it. He just couldn't enjoy the fact that he seemed to have found a nice family, when his head was on Octavia the entire time, and all the kids kept looking at him like he was an alien, with his busted lip and old clothes.
He found a way to get away from school, to get to Octavia as soon as possible. Jasper had helped him at lunch break. He told Bellamy that the principal of the school was no one other than Clarke's dad, Jake Griffin, and that he was sure that Abby had asked him to keep an eye on the new boy. So, he told him not to scape by the side of the building, because it was where Jake's window was, and he would get caught.
Once he did it, Clarke saw him walking away and followed him, wanting to know where he was headed. "Where are you going?" she asked, trying to keep up with his pace, while the boy did not stop walking
"Have stuff to take care off" he said simply
"Stuff to take care off? Right now?"
"Is important" he stated
"These stuff to take care off can get you back in juvie. My dad is a cop. You seriously think he won't track you down in like, a minute?"
"Why don't you mind your own damm business?" he said "You and your freaking family"
"We're just trying to help you" she said slightly offended, and Bellamy turned around for the first time
"Stop!" and continued walking. Clarke's phone started ringing and she sighed
"Someone's calling me from this number all day" at that Bellamy turned around again, walking to her, getting the phone "Hey" Clarke complained, but he paid no attention, answering the call
"Hi baby, is me, what's going on?" he said, in a rushed tone "What you mean? What are you saying?" he said, anxiously, while Clarke stood by his side not understanding anything "Let me talk to Octavia" he said, now with a tone much more serious "Put her back on the phone" he tried again, voice trembling and Clarke couldn't said if it was fear or rage and took the phone from his ears
"What's going on? Who was that? Why they're calling my number?" she asked, as the boy tried to get whoever it was back on the line, with no success
"I borrowed your phone last night" he said, giving the phone back "I have to go" he said and stormed off again, Clarke right behind him
"So who was it? Was it like your girlfriend or something?"
"No" he said, not stopping his rushed walk, and Clarke got up to him, walking by his side
"So who was it? How they had my number? Who was it?" she asked more forcefully when he kept walking in silence, so he turned to her again and stopped to answer
"It was my sister" he said getting Clarke by surprise. She looked at him for a moment, not knowing what to say and Bellamy started walking again. She went after him again
"Oh, oh, so let me call pops" she said, sensing the urgency of the matter and looking through her phone and Bellamy didn't like it at all
"Marcus? Ha, no way" he said, not trusting the man
"He's a cop, he can help!" Clarke tried
"No cops!" he said nervous, and Clarke noticed how he didn't trust the police
"He is not like that" she said
"Look, if you call him, he will look into the system and find all of these complains my foster father made against me, they'll send me back to juvie, Octavia will get stuck in that house" he tried to explain, and Clarke stood there trying to find her words "I gotta go" he concluded leaving her behind. But, when she saw him getting away, she ran after him and decided to join him at the journey.
Both sat inside de bus, on the way to Bellamy's old foster home, in an awkward silence, until Bellamy asked her
"You didn't have that art thing tonight?"
"Ah, yeah… yeah" she said, "Don't worry about it, there'll be others" she dismissed his worries "So what happened?" she finally asked "In that house, I mean" Bellamy took a deep breath, knowing he should tell her, since she was there with him after all
"I got home early"
"What?" she asked confused
"Yeah, I had a part time job and got out early. You see, I was saving money so I could get O's custody when I turned eighteen"
"Okay…" Clarke encouraged him to continue
"I got home early and saw that my foster dad was… touching my sister" he said, disgust written all over his face
"What? Are you serious?" he nodded
"And I figured later on that it wasn't the first time. I knew she was acting differently, but…"
"Hey, this is not your fault" she said, and he nodded again "So… what happened?"
"Well, I went after him, of course. But he hit me and got a knife"
"Wow, wait… he hit you?"
"Yeah, he used to hit me all the time, whatever" he said, like it wasn't a big of a deal. "But then I saw him going after Octavia again, with the knife, she was crying so much…" he looked to his hands "I didn't know what to do, if I went after him again he could hurt her further, so I went downstairs, grabbed a baseball bat and smashed his precious car with it" Clarke was looking at him, with a lost of worlds that he had gone thru such an ordeal, and he continued, looking straight forward, not managing to look at the girl next to him "The police came and he told them that I went crazy and he was defending himself, nobody seemed to care much about my side of the story" and at that, silence hit again
"How is she?" Clarke asked, curious about that sister the boy loved so much. He seemed like a totally different person when talking about her
"Who?"
"Octavia"
"She's a great kid, actually the best part of us"
"Kid? How old she is?"
"Just turned ten" he said with a little smile "But she seems so much older sometimes" Clarke was suddenly even more saddened about the story; she was just a kid. What was wrong with people? Her impression on the boy beside her had already changed immensely, and suddenly she felt a sense of protection over that little girl he was talking about, without even meeting her "I hate when they set us apart. She's my sister, my responsibility" and at that they reached their destination.
Clarke agreed to help and distract the man, by ringing the doorbell, while Bellamy went by the back door to see if he could reach the girl. She told the guy she was lost and asked for directions, while Bellamy entered the house, looking for Octavia, who was in the kitchen, cleaning. He had entered every so quietly, but the man looked behind and caught him in the act
"Hey!" he screamed "Get out of my house" he walked towards Bellamy, and Clarke was at a loss of what to do. Bellamy just knew he had to get the attention on him and while he did that, Clarke noticed a scared girl watching everything unfold at the kitchen door. She was beautiful, Clarke noticed. Dark hair, loose and a little messy, big green eyes and white skin. She looked even younger than she had anticipated, very little and skinny for her age. She looked scared and Clarke wanted nothing more than to run to her and hug her, saying it would be okay, but she couldn't. The man was in the way, and she noticed now, he was pointing a gun at Bellamy. Dammit.
"Please man, I just want to talk to her" Bellamy tried
"You're trespassing" he screamed again "And I'll not allow you to talk to my daughter" he pointed
"She's not your fucking daughter!" Bellamy was losing his patience too
"Oh but she is" the man said, walking closer to the little girl "She's my daughter" he said holding the crying girl in front of him, giving her a kiss on the cheek and Clarke thought she was going to vomit right there "She's my girl" he said pulling her hair, bringing her closer to him and his gun, as she let out a small cry
"Stop!" Bellamy yelled
"She's all mine, just… mine" he said, provokingly, holding the girl, pointing the gun at her now. Bellamy was going crazy, but the man had the other hand holding a gun to his sister's side, so he didn't know what to do. Clarke was sweating. How could anyone let this man take care of foster children?
"Please stop it, I just want to talk" he tried again
"If you don't leave right now, I'll kill you boy" he said, now pointing the gun at him "I'll kill you and make her watch, to always know that her beloved big brother died because of her" he said, forcing his arm on her neck as he held her close. Clarke could see she the tears running down the girl's face, and it made her wanna cry as well. "Just like your mother did" at that the girl sobbed
"Bell" she cried; the first time Clarke had ever heard the girl's voice.
"He's gonna die because of you" the man said pressing his mouth at the girl's ear
"O" Bellamy tried to get her attention "It's okay, I promise" the girl kept crying "Look at me, it's okay, don't you trust me?" she nodded, nervously while the boy took the lamp beside him and threw it at the man. Clarke hid behind the couch and heard a gunfire. She released a breath she didn't know she was holding when she heard Bellamy's voice right after that
"Hide O, run" he said, and she picked to see what was going on. The girl ran back to the kitchen, the boy still standing before the man, who had shot at the door next to the teenager, when he got out of guard by the lamp hitting him.
"Oh your son a bitch" he said, and at that moment they heard Kane's voice
"Police! Drop your weapon" the man froze, still pointing the gun at the boy. Kane came close to Clarke, leading her to a safer place, while his partner tried again
"Drop your weapon, now" his partner Jaha shouted
"If you come closer, I'll shoot" the man said, looking straight in Bellamy's eyes, hating the boy even more than he already did. Then, thinking again, there was one thing that would hurt him much more than a gunshot, so he pointed his gun to the kitchen cabinet. Kane, Jaha and Clarke didn't understand, but Bellamy freaked out
"No, please! Don't!" and he walked closer to the man, to try and prevent that from happening. Jaha, seeing the boy getting too close to an armed man, shot at the man's shoulder and the man shot at the cabinet, while falling down "No, no!" Bellamy yelled, running to the kitchen. Jaha called in an ambulance for the man, after he handcuffed him. Kane noticed that Bellamy was worried about something, but since he didn't see anything, he went to Clarke
"Are you ok?" he asked, and she nodded, looking at Bellamy, realizing what was going on
"She's there" she said
"What? Who?" he asked
"Octavia, she was in the kitchen" at that Kane realized that they were not the only ones there, and ran to the kitchen, founding Bellamy on the floor opening the cabinet door. He was shocked with what he saw. There was a girl hidden at the kitchen cabinet.
"O! O, talk to me" Bellamy said, pulling the girl into his arms. There was blood, but she was awake "Oh my god, O" he cried
"Clarke, your mom is at the car. Call her, hurry" Kane said. They were looking for Clarke, since she never showed up for her presentation at the gallery. Kane tracked her phone down after Raven said that she had seen her with Bellamy, last time she's seen her bigger sister. When they saw that Clarke's phone was at a dangerous part of town, Kane called his partner to go with him to get her, and Abby insisted she wanted to tag along. He didn't want to let her, but she did it anyway, in her own car, following the two cops, but Marcus told her to wait outside until things were under control, and he assessed what was going on. Clarke did as she was told
"What happened?" Kane asked, kneeling beside Bellamy, who was holding his sister in his arms, trying to figure out where she had been hit "Who's this?"
"My sister" the boy answered with trembling voice, caressing her hair "Hang tight O, I'm here now, It's okay, I promise" he kept telling her, and she looked tiredly directly at his eyes
"I'm… sorry Bell" she whispered
"No, shhhh. It's not your fault" He said, and Abby got to them
"Oh my god, what happened?" she asked, accessing the girl in her foster son's arms. The girl was trembling, her breathing was shallow, but she did not find any injuries in her middle or chest
"It's okay, she's one of the good ones" they heard Bellamy telling her. He looked at Kane briefly "They both are" at that the girl seemed to relax and Abby noticed the shot had hit the little girl's neck. She held a towel to the wound, to stop the bleeding
"She needs an ambulance" she told Kane
"They're on the way" he said, and the girl's breathing was worsened as she got more scared each breath she took. Her white skin more and more white
"Hey, I told you I'd come right? So now you have to promise me to be strong" Bellamy told her
"Keep talking to her" Abby said, talking to the boy for the first time, trying to get over the fact that he had brought her daughter to the middle of this mess "Keep her awake" he nodded, not taking his eyes from the small girl, while Abby kept holding her neck and Kane asked Jaha to take the man to the hospital in their car, so that the ambulance would take the girl. Abby concentrated on the girl's wound and couldn't help but to feel very touched by the two kids in front of her, as she listened to their scared and trembling voices.
"Hey O, stay with me" he asked as he saw her closing her eyes "You'll never believe what I found" at that the girl looked at him again, curious, forgetting about the pain for a second "A school inside a beach" Abby sighed, sadly. It was like the kid was talking about some treasure he found in the desert.
"Close to the waves?" she asked so low, that the doctor almost missed. Just like she was starting to miss the girl's pulse, weaker each second.
"Yeah, so close" he said. Clarke, who was supposed to be waiting outside, could not handle herself, and was by the door watching them, tears in her eyes.
"Bell…" she tried to say "What happens now? Where…" and she closed her eyes again, as Bellamy cut her off
"Don't worry O, we'll figure it out. I promise" he said
"Th you" she mumbled
"I'll try to make them keep us together… hey, O, open your eyes" he said, holding her cheek "Listen, no matter what happens, you'll be somewhere safe this time, okay?"
"You" she tried again
"I'll come get you again"
"Her pulse is dropping. Marcus, where is the damm ambulance?" Abby shouted
"Bell" the girl called, not getting to open her eyes again. She was numb, all she could feel was her brother's warmth and it made her happy. Bellamy pulled her closer
"Be careful" Abby said, be he didn't listen. He began to rock the girl, back and forward, whispering to himself
"My sister, my responsibility. My sister, my responsibility"
"Over here" Abby heard Kane and the paramedics showed up.
Bellamy was pacing nonstop while waiting for news about his sister. Abby was helping her colleagues at the San Diego Memorial's ER to work on the girl, while Clarke and Kane waited with the boy. Abby asked Jake to stay at their place, to keep an eye on the twins for her. Of course Raven had argued, sending her a message about how her and Jasper were grown to be alone at home.
"What is taking so long" Bellamy sighed, nervous
"Mom will be back soon, with good news" Clarke tried to calm him.
"And then we'll have to have a serious conversation with you two" Kane said, still not believing in what that day had turned into.
"Listen" Bellamy said, seating next to him for the first time "Please, you can send me back to juvie, or whatever. But please, promise me you'll keep her" something about the boy's eyes melted Kane's heart. He understood Abby now.
"What?"
"I mean, I'm sorry for bringing Clarke to the middle of this mess… And, and…" he was trying to say the right thing "She'll be good, I promise. She's very quiet, you won't even notice she's there"
"Bellamy, you're not going anywhere" he said "None of you are"
"It's, just…"
"You're not disposable Bellamy" Kane said, looking straight into his eyes, noticing how his words touched him deeply "You're not worthless" the boy looked down at his hands and Kane put his hand on his shoulder "Let's worry about getting Octavia healthy again, okay?" the boy nodded again, holding tears
"Thanks"
"She'll be fine" Abby told them some time later "She lost a lot of blood, but we got a transfusion into her. We took out the bullet, it didn't hit any major nerves, muscles or veins and arteries, so that's good" Bellamy breathed deep in relief while Kane and Clarke released a breath they didn't know they were holding. "Bellamy" Abby said, now getting a seat and motioning him to seat next to her. She was being the foster mom now, the switch was clear "She was hurt before what happened today" she said carefully, watching the boy, but he didn't seemed surprised, even tough angry
"How bad?" was all he said
"Multiple bruises at her torso, neck and tights" the doctor said "Bite marks… we may have to run a rape kit" the boy hid his face with his hands, not being able to hold tears any longer. "Did you know anything about this?" he nodded "Why didn't you say anything earlier honey? There are people like Kane and I out there, to help you" she wasn't being judgmental, he could tell. She seemed to genuinely care
"I did" he said "I mean, I tried" then he looked at her, and then at Kane "The cops never listen to us… It got me into juvie, and I couldn't protect her" Kane felt his heart break even more, if it were even possible
"It's not your job to protect her, kid" he said
"My sister, my responsibility" the boy said
"Well, we'll have a lot of time to work this out. Right now we'll focus on Octavia's recovery. She should be here for the next few days, just to make sure she's ok and that her levels are good to go. She is very anemic, so we might consider another transfusion later on"
"Can I see her?"
"Of course, follow me" the nice woman said, as they both got up to see the injured little girl.
