Currently on Moldavite, Crystal's parents were seriously discussing what to do with their eleven-year-old daughter Ruby. Modavitians aged slightly differently then humans, given their longer rotation around their sun. However, for all intentions and purposes, Crystal's younger sister was mentally and emotionally a preteen by human standers.
Selenite and her husband Garnet were at a loss to do with their youngest daughter. Ruby had already started in her 'teenage rebellion phase." Which meant she was getting in a lot of trouble. She also hung out with many girls who were toxic and a bad influence. Her grades in school had been slipping, and she even started to steal things. All in all, the alien parents needed help figuring out what to do with Ruby.
What made it worse was each parent had to leave the planet shortly for a year-long work assignment. Selenite was a doctor honored to teach at an intergalactic medical university. It had been her dream since childhood, and she couldn't pass it up. Her husband, on the other hand, was going with a team of scientists to explore some new worlds to terraform.
Either way, they couldn't leave their youngest alone. But neither of their year-long assignments would stabilize Ruby's living situation. Plus, they had no other relatives, and boarding school would worsen things. So as a last resort, they contacted their eldest, Crystal. She lived on Earth as a liaison with the planet's government. From the several transmissions she sent to them, she was also involved in a growing romantic relationship.
Still, they didn't have much of a choice. So they went to a room where a giant glowing crystal hovered and began to set up the system for a long-distance call. They hoped they weren't waking Crystal from her sleep. Crystal and Shaggy were asleep at the moment. They had a busy day at their respective colleges and unwinded by going to a club near their apartment. They're thankful for the long weekend.
Suddenly Crystal's peace symbol necklace began to glow. Seeing the particular color it was glowing, she knew who was calling her. Slipping out of Shaggy's arms, she went to the living room where a painting they'd bought from Lester when they'd met was. The picture started to change till a screen appeared. Crystal was shocked to see her parents. They hadn't talked in months, so she figured this was a check-in call.
"Mom! Dad! I wasn't expecting you to call! It's nice to hear from you! How are things back home?" Crystal asked curiously.
Her mother gazed at her, "Crystal are you doing alright? Is that human treating you well?" her mother asked, concerned.
"Mom, I've told you before. Shaggy is an honorable human. Sure, he's easily scared and pigs out on food a little too much. However, I can assure you he is incredibly nice and is not any trouble."
"Okay, but you can't blame me for worrying. Seeing how your last relationship went," her mother reminded her.
Crystal looked flustered. "Mom! Shaggy is in no way like my ex-boyfriend Peridot! Peridot was a jerk who disrespected me. Shaggy does nothing but respect me! So did you call me to chastise me about my love life?" Crystal asked, annoyed.
"No, my precious gem, we did not," her father Garnet said. He looked pretty serious. He then explained the situation back home and how the only solution they had was for Crystal to take in her younger sister for an entire Earth year. After that, her parents expressed their hope she could straighten out her sister's bad behavior and get her to stop stealing things.
Crystal wasn't sure about this. She and her little sister had always been close. However, they had a major falling out after Crystal chose to return to Earth. Crystal felt her sister might have felt abandoned and betrayed. Still, Crystal did want to attempt to mend the bond between her and her sister. Also, she couldn't see any other solution to her parent's dilemma.
Crystal informed her parents she'd have to explain things to Shaggy and clarify it with their landlord. However, it could take one Earth week. So they agreed to wait a week before she asked them if it would work. In the morning, Shaggy found Crystal already up. Her human form unquestionably showed she hadn't slept well. Also, the wrinkles of her clothing indicated as much.
"Crystal is everything okay?" her boyfriend asked.
Crystal sighed, "Not really, Shaggy. We've much to talk about over breakfast. I hope you don't mind that I tried to replicate some of the dishes from my home planet," as she set their breakfast on the table.
The food looked like green eggs and ham, like in the Doctor Seuss books. Plus, also strange orange juice and muffins. But Shaggy didn't complain. He already agreed Crystal shouldn't have to eat only human food. Her food did taste odd to his taste buds. However, it wasn't like he got sick from it. So he calmly ate his alien breakfast as Crystal explained the pickle her parents were in.
Shaggy did sympathize because he, too, had a younger sister who'd gone through a rebellious phase. So he wasn't sure how to behave around young children. But he agreed this was the only solution to her parents' problem. He also confessed he'd like to meet more of Crystal's family. After all, they're getting more serious each day. So if they did eventually marry, he needed to be familiar with her family now and not later.
Crystal explained it would take two weeks before her sister would arrive as there were passports and other legalities to get through first. Regardless, Shaggy would at least take care of the landlord. There were some hiccups with the landlord. But he agreed to let Crystal's sister Ruby stay. As long as she followed the rules and there weren't any more pets.
So two weeks later, Crystal's entire family showed up. Their human disguise made them all look like Native Americans' ethnicity. Plus, each wore a peace necklace. But their clothes were slightly different from Crystal's hippy look. For example, Selenite wore a pale blue dress shirt with a knee-length black skirt and low heels. Her father, Garnet's disguise, had him have a nicely trimmed beard and glasses. But also wear a dark red dress shirt and black pants.
Ruby looked like a typical preteen. Her long black and red hair was styled in a messy ponytail with a single beaded braid on her left side. Her outfit consisted of a pink short-sleeved shirt with a long lavender shirt underneath. Ripped blue jeans and bejeweled ankle boots. She even wore ruby earrings.
Crystal's family stayed for a week before they had to leave for their new jobs. Ruby looked unhappy about her current situation and stuck on a 'primitive planet." But Crystal promised things would look up soon. She could only hope she was correct.
