I. The loud thump of a ball bouncing off a flat surface, followed by a high-pitched ringing sound of sneakers on the hardwood floor, and the smooth entry of the ball into the ring, echoed throughout Ryonan gym. All of the players are warming up and preparing for the practice game that is being held today. The Shohoku team has just arrived. Everyone there was astounded by their imposing presence and the thunderous greetings they gave the match's host. As they entered the court, the Ryonan team started examining them, each member's height, and the new recruit. Coach Taoka of the home court team gave them a warm greeting.
The game was ready to start, but the Ryonan team was still awaiting its star player, who had just arrived at the entrance and was grinning warmly at everyone. He is carelessly making his way towards the court, unconcerned that he is late and hasn't warmed up. He is always prepared to play. The gym is filled with a wide range of emotions, especially when the star players from the two teams are facing off. One is looking serious, while the other is beaming with a smile. Sendoh wondered why his opponent seemed so serious during this match, so he greeted him to lighten the mood.
Sendoh: Hello!
Rukawa: Shut up.
The response he got from the rookie made Sendoh chuckle. He kept a close eye on him. His aloof, unpleasant demeanor made the rookie's character even more intriguing. He smiled a nice grin at him once again, just to prove his doubts about this person.
Sendoh: Hi!
Rukawa: Heh!
Watching his rival smile on the court caused Rukawa to scowl a bit more. His lips curled into a frown as he wondered why the moron kept grinning at him. He gave the spiky head a menacing glare, but he maintained his big smile. Putting up with him is a waste of time. He didn't come here with this in mind. He doesn't want to be bothered by this imbecile. They will defeat them all and become the country's best player.
They could feel the tension rising between the two teams as soon as the game began. The first few minutes were critical, as both teams set the tone for the rest of the game. The two teams were initially not evenly matched, and everyone on the court was already predicting the host team to win. Rukawa threw a sidelong glance at his rival whenever he was outwitted in the game. Ever since the game started, he had been irritated by this spiky head. He saw how well his rival played, and every time he grabbed the ball from him, it infuriated him more.
Rukawa: I will defeat you.
Sendoh: You can try.
As he encouraged his team to keep winning, Sendoh started to make numerous passes for his team. He plays effortlessly at the moment. They continue to score as he delivers unstoppable assists to every member of the team, and every second seems to turn in their favor. With Akagi as their opponent, Sendoh believes that their game will be tough and that the match will be the same as it always has been. However, seeing Rukawa's reaction every time he snatched the ball from his grasp, blocked his attack, and overcame his defense made this match very interesting. Especially seeing this grumpy man so annoyed with him made his day. To make him scowl even more, he walked up to him and whispered.
Sendoh: I thought you were going to beat me.
Rukawa: Idiot!
Rukawa just rolled his eyes, confused as to why his idiotic rival was laughing at him like his one-word reply to him was the funniest joke he had ever heard. He hurriedly stepped away from the spiky head since he really didn't want to see that idiot's grinning face again. He continued to move forward until he reached the other side of the court, but he could still hear the idiot's boisterous laughter. Wait! He recalls that the match hasn't ended yet, and they will win this game! He quickly returned to his rival before anyone noticed his idiotic exit from the court. Whew.
As the Shohoku bench watched their players fall far behind the home court team in scoring, they almost gave up. But not everyone had given up on their defeat yet. Not until Sendoh attempted an alley-oop and failed, which caused the entire crowd to stand. The porcupine head turned to check who had stolen the ball, which caught him off guard.
Rukawa: Our turn.
Rukawa's confidence and determination skyrocketed, and at that point, winning was his goal. Instead of being discouraged by seeing that they can't even score against them, it fuels his fire even more. He pushes himself beyond his own limits and increases his desire to win while playing against someone of his caliber. The Shohoku team, though, played nearly as well as the host team did as the first half almost came to an end, and they soon found themselves down by one point.
In the second half, Ryonan's status begins to worsen due to the Shohoku team's continuous offensive play. With his lightning-fast pace, competitive spirit, and explosive ability, Rukawa continues to be viewed as a serious threat to the host team. Meanwhile, coach Anzai made the decision to let Rukawa rest on the bench after their team swapped players. Sendoh's shoulder dropped as he saw his favorite opponent turn his back and head towards their bench. As the grumpy man sat down, the spiky head remained fixed on him as he waited for the rookie to look at him too, but he didn't.
When they returned to the game, Sakuragi, another rookie of the guest team, caught everyone off guard. He played outstanding defense, and he picked up his rebounding technique from Akagi. Although it could be asserted that the two teams' play was now evenly matched, Sendoh's energy appeared to be flagging. During the game, he was troubled and couldn't even understand his feelings, like something was wrong and something was missing.
He continued to glance across towards the guest team bench as the game went on. He often checked on him, but this grumpy man never returned a glance. Why had he all of a sudden become saddened that this grumpy man was ignoring him? Why did his opponent leave him on the court without telling him? Why didn't he even inform him that he was already exhausted? Since Rukawa left him in the match, his muddled mind and distracted play affected his performance. He took a look at the scoreboard. Only a very slight gap separates their scores. Coach Anzai will only bring Rukawa back into the game if they outscored them again. Yeah! He came up with a plan. He must lead a high-scoring attack against the guest team in order for Rukawa to return to him. Hihihi!
In such a close game and with his great offensive performance, Sendoh motivated his team to victory and to see the return of his beloved foe. He restored his focus and began making many shots for the team, breaking through Sakuragi's powerful defense. Ryonan's team's play came back to their game, thanks to their helpful players, their captain's excellent offensive play, and especially their ace player, who purposefully outscored the guest team so his grumpy opponent would return to his arms again—I mean, return to the match. Sendoh is eagerly waiting for his return. He smoothed his jersey down and petted the back of his head before moving to meet Rukawa, who was walking in his direction.
Sendoh: I miss you Rukawa.
Hearing his rival's odd words for him made Rukawa furrow his brow. After he had sat on the bench for a short while, he continued to stare at him, checking whether anything had changed about him. He slowly touched his throat, expecting the spiky head to chuckle as he always does, but he didn't. And what made him much more uneasy was the sudden change in his voice, which turned into a husky tone.
Rukawa: Idiot.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
After he responded, Sendoh burst out laughing. Rukawa was even more confused now that the sweet spiky head was laughing loudly with his pearly teeth again. Maybe this person is going crazy, but his laughter made him feel better after an inexplicable nervousness arose inside him. Meanwhile, Rukawa and Sakuragi's double-team for him thrills Sendoh and displays his actual, untapped potential.
Sendoh: You know what? I don't like to face a double team.
Rukawa: Why? Because you're an arrogant porcupine?
Sendoh: No, because I'm faithful. I only want you.
Rukawa's pupil dilated as he heard another weird word from him. He continued to glare at him as he waited for another burst of laughter. There's something different in his eyes, gazing at him intently as though there were only the two of them in the gym, which made his heart thump so quickly and his mind become foggy.
Meanwhile, they are jolted out of their daydreaming state by a loud whistle. They abruptly move away from one another, with one rubbing his aching chest and the other covering his mouth with his hands.
After the fleeting yet wonderful moment, the two ace players started to feel uncomfortable around one another. When the whistle blew once more, they each inhaled deeply, with one tying up his laces and the other twisting his armband. They must turn their attention back to the game. They competed again fairly with one another, ready to score more before the time ran out.
Possession of the ball has been harder, and scoring has gotten much more competitive. There is not much time left. Sendoh glanced at Rukawa, taking the last chance to gaze at him as closely as possible before the time ran out. As Rukawa and his eyes locked out, their pupils became larger, as if they were trying to memorize each other's features.
Sendoh: Good luck.
Rukawa: You, too.
No one is certain who will win the game, causing shivers to rise in everyone's stomach. Up until Rukawa caught the ball and handed it to the redhead teammate. Sakuragi's layup gave everyone hope that Shohoku would win until Sendoh attempted a double-clutch layup. With just a few seconds left, he made a flawless shot. The crowd cheered as soon as the ball went through the basket. Sendoh scored the game-winning shot.
Kaede Rukawa was constantly in his line of sight. Throughout the first half, Sendoh was focused entirely on him and nothing else. He absolutely ignored the other players, as if he were the only player on that team. So many ideas were running through his mind. Even how to approach him and begin a conversation puzzled him. He wished he could overcome his shyness and just talk to him, but he feared it might be embarrassing. While Coach Taoka was talking to his teammates on the bench, Sendoh approached and secretly asked Hikoichi.
Sendoh: Hikoichi, what are Kaede Rukawa's stats?
Hikoichi: He's just like you, Sendoh! His overall score was...
Sendoh: I didn't mean that. What is his... relationship status?
Hikoichi: Sorry, Sendoh! I didn't double-check!
Sendoh: Tell me as soon as you can. Thanks!
The game was over, but Sendoh was too shy to talk to the grumpy man. He couldn't recall ever being this shy around another man in his life. It was only now, after 17 years of living, that he felt curious yet eager to learn more about a particular person. He was always coming up with new ways to approach him, but he was never able to carry them through. He thought about talking to him inside the court, talking to him after the game, or even talking to him through his teammate, but he never contemplated any of these possibilities. He even thought of mistakenly bumping into him, but he knew it wouldn't work either.
Koshino: Aaawww...
Sendoh: Why are you staring at me like that?!
Koshino: If you hadn't taken your eyes away from him, I'd say you had a crush on him.
Sendoh: We're both men, you know. Why are you looking at me as if I'm secretly planning something against him?!
Koshino: Why are you staring at him all the time?!
Sendoh: He looks a bit different in some way.
Rukawa was never interested in anything except basketball. He continued to act as though he didn't give a damn about anything—both live beings and inanimate objects in general—and this is how people perceive him. He didn't pay attention to anyone or waste any time until he came up against a talented player from another school who he viewed as both his opponent and his equal.
Koshino: There's your crush!
Sendoh: Kosh! What if someone overhears you?!
Koshino: He's coming! He's coming! Do you want some face powder or lip balm, perhaps? Toothpaste! Mouthwash!
Sendoh: Quiet down!
Koshino: What will you do now?
Sendoh: I don't know either!
Rukawa intended to approach Sendoh along the way about asking him for a one-on-one match when they finished their match and were prepared to head home. However, seeing his rival like this makes him want to go backwards towards the locker room, do a U-turn, or just melt on the ground. Yeah. He is really nervous right now. To make matters worse, the spiky head made his way towards him first. He was greeted by him with a cheery smile, and the next thing he knew, his rival was reaching out to shake his hand. What the hell is going on? It's a good thing he already has a plan to defend himself from this seductive spiky head. To avoid looking tense, he tapped Sendoh's waiting hand and quickly walked away.
Koshino: What the hell happened?! Rejected easily!
Sendoh: Heh! I'll put him in his place.
Koshino: Where exactly? In your bedroom?
Sendoh: I don't have a crush on him! Do I have to say that again?!
With a huge grin on his face, Hikoichi rushed in the direction of their team. He cheerfully shared all the facts he had learned about their opponent's super rookie.
Hikoichi: Sendoh! He is not dating anyone!
Koshino: Who?
Hikoichi: Kaede Rukawa! Sendoh is curious whether Rukawa is dating... HMP!
Sendoh wrapped his arm around Hikoichi's shoulder and covered his mouth to keep him from saying anything else. Koshino's eyes widen in the meantime, and he has a sneaking suspicion that his buddy has a thing for player 11 from the opposing team.
Sendoh: Thank you so much, Hikoichi, for doing me this favor! Can you please send all of the information you have to my phone? Thanks! Um, I think Coach was looking for you earlier.
Hikoichi: No problem at all! I'm happy to help! Okay, I'm going to see Coach right now!
Sendoh observed Hikoichi rushing ahead to their coach. He feels pleased to have received personal information about Rukawa, but he wonders what this information will be used for. He sighed and rubbed his chin. He doesn't seem to be thinking about asking Hikoichi to get it. He didn't understand what was happening to him either. His deep thoughts were interrupted by the loud laughter of his buddy next to him.
Koshino: Hahaha! Why are you still denying something that is so obvious?!
Sendoh: Knowing information about our opponents is not a problem.
Koshino: When was the last time you were interested in getting to know other teams or the players that could be your rivals?
Sendoh: I am familiar with Maki, Fujima, Hanagata, and Akagi. See? Rukawa isn't the only one I recognize. All of the talented athletes in this district have my interest.
Koshino: When was Maki born?
Sendoh: Hey! How is the match related to their birthday? I told you I didn't have a thing for Rukawa. He is a man! He's a good athlete, so I need to be prepared.
Koshino: Is that so? What day is Rukawa's birthday?
Sendoh: January 1.
Koshino: Ooowww.
Sendoh took a position in the center of the shower's warm, soothing splash. The glass is damp and misty as he washes his hair. He squeezes his palms together in front of his chest, causing his pectoral muscles to tighten up. He looks at them for a bit and chuckles to himself. He shuts his eyes, scoops up some face wash in his palms, and begins to rub his face until it is completely covered.
He instantly thought back to the recent practice match they had played. He freezes, his eyes opening quickly, and he still has face wash on his hands and face. The roar of the crowd, the cheers of each individual sitting on each team's benches, and the scraping noise of shoes on the court floor all seemed to return to his ear. After assuming that he didn't hear anything, he starts to wash the soap off his face.
Sendoh: Okay, what the hell was that?
He hastily pulls his face out from beneath the spray of water, looks in the wall mirror, and freezes. The thunder of the gym's noise still resonates in his ears as he struggles with exhaustion and many thoughts. He shut his eyes for a moment. Just some rest will do. Then, out of nowhere, he saw the man in front of him, staring at him with fiery eyes, and that picture instantly halted all the clamor and muddled thoughts racing through his mind.
Sendoh: Rukawa...
He makes his way backwards, rubbing up against the wet tiles as he does so. There's still water in the shower. He quietly slides the glass door open as he glides carefully through the water stream from the shower. His eyes flit across the towel in the wide bathroom. His focus then quickly shifts to his bedroom. A bedside lamp's delicate light can be seen through the crack in the bathroom door. He spotted a familiar face—his opponent from their practice game, the grumpy man!
Sendoh: Crap! I saw him! What? How come he is here? How did he get inside?
He furrows his brow and considers whether or not he is actually seeing Rukawa's face in his room. He froze, stepped back, and immediately paced back and forth in a fit of panic. He grabs a big handful of his hair and just stares at the floor tiles, unsure of what he's going to do.
Sendoh: I won't allow him to see me in my briefs! Oh well, perhaps I can pick up a towel.
He glances back at the towel. It is on the side of the room that is opposite the door. He pauses, extending his leg and placing his toes on the bathmat. At the door, his pupils constrict. He makes a slight head turn to glance at his laptop, which was on his bed.
Sendoh: Why did I freak out when I saw him? This should not be happening. I should be completely over him. I am a man—a handsome, attractive man.
He inhaled deeply as he realized that what he had been seeing on his bed was actually only the image of Rukawa on his laptop screen. After turning on the light switch on the wall, the heavy block on his chest was loosened. Water was still trickling from the ends of his hair as he rapidly wiped them. He pushed his seat closer to him while wrapping a towel around his hips. His pajamas could wait, but the chance to see Rukawa again couldn't. The first thing he looked for was Kaede Rukawa's social media account. Many results appeared, but he had no idea which ones were real. He went to the Shohoku High Official Page and looked through the series of photos of their practice game.
Sendoh: He looks like a living statue and smells lovely.
Suddenly, his phone rang unexpectedly. When he saw the caller, he scratched the back of his neck. His ex-girlfriends are starting to contact him again. They entered his mind, even defeating Coach Taoka by constantly watching his every move, sending messages and calls every minute, and always asking for time. They were too demanding, so he made the decision to never date again. He wanted to unwind, but Kaede Rukawa caught his eye.
Sendoh: I'm a man. He is a man.
He kept searching on Google. He considered looking at pictures of gorgeous women, but just like his ex-girlfriends, his gaze simply skipped over them. He couldn't take his thoughts away from the superstar rookie. He was puzzled. His free time is spent thinking about him. He was determined to completely erase the running image of Rukawa in his mind, even though he had no idea how it would end.
Sendoh: When I first laid eyes on him, it felt as though he had left a mark in them. I could see him everywhere I turned! Damn! I feel nervous when I think of him, but why? Well, if I just stare at him in a photo, nothing will happen. I need to face him to get rid of whatever is bothering me.
With heavy, puffy red eyelids and darker under-eye circles, Rukawa groggily walks toward a nearby public basketball court. What mystery is he hiding behind his new look for today? For the first time in his 16 years as a handsome man, he wasn't drowsy or, at the very least, yawning after a demanding practice game. When he went home from Ryonan High yesterday, he forgot that he was hungry and just reminisced about how the spiky head gazed at him. He recalls feeling like it was the nicest conversation he'd ever had when he quietly watched him talk. Seeing him in silence as he chuckles with his white teeth is still echoing in his head. The first thing that comes to mind when he wakes up this morning is the spiky head, and he smiles as soon as he thinks of him. Whoa, what?
He headed to a convenience store next to the court. He hurried to the coffeemaker to rouse his exhausted soul. He couldn't muster any more strength while he walked to the cashier's TV in the wall's upper corner. He continued to stand in front of the counter, drinking his coffee and watching.
Do you struggle to fall asleep? Can't eat? Do you want to chat with that person all the time? Do you love watching him laugh? Is he the first person you think about when you wake up? If you're feeling these symptoms, it means you're in love!
Rukawa abruptly spewed out the newly sipped coffee from his mouth. The cashier instantly assisted him and provided him with a tissue.
Cashier: Sir, are you okay?
Rukawa: Yes.
Cashier: Is there a problem with the coffee?
Rukawa: I don't have a problem with your coffee, but I don't like your TV.
Meanwhile, to end what had been bugging him ever since the day he met Kaede Rukawa, Sendoh traveled to Shohoku. But how does he begin? What he is going through right now is not the grumpy man's fault. And it's not his fault that he can't escape Sendoh's mind either. What should he do about his problems? He also didn't know. He looked at the rookie in the distance, knowing it was going to be a long day for him. Before they know it, they are in an intense competition until the sun sets and the moon takes over the sky.
Sendoh: One-on-one?
Speaking of the devil, the spiky is here. Rukawa rubbed his eyes and returned to his killer eyes. He raised his right hand and spun the orange ball around the end of his finger. He kept staring at him in an attempt to intimidate his rival. He remembered that he was to blame for his sleepless night and wet dreams—err, jumbled thoughts the whole night!
Sendoh stepped near Rukawa and stood strong in front of him, rather than flinching at the sight of those killer eyes. He observed that Rukawa had stopped spinning the ball, grabbed it, and positioned it on his lower torso.
Sendoh: Let's have some fun with that!
Rukawa grimaced as Sendoh pointed his finger towards his lower body. His eyes reflexively focused attentively on the fingertip that was pointing.
Rukawa: You idiot! What are you talking about?
Sendoh: Why are you mad? I said, let's play with that.
Once again, Rukawa's eyes dipped to Sendoh's fingertip, as if a line had been drawn from his hand to something he was pointing at. He clenched his fist in rage. He couldn't believe his spiky rival was a pervert! He gritted his teeth and switched his attention back to his rival's finger.
Rukawa: What the hell are you thinking?!
Sendoh's eyes expanded, and his jaw fell down as he pondered what was bothering the grumpy man at this time. He scratched his hair, convinced that he had said something wrong. As he witnessed Rukawa's entire body burn while tightly grasping the ball, sweat began to drip from his brow. He snatched the ball out of his clutches so they could play one-on-one.
When he saw Sendoh pull the ball away from him, Rukawa's burning fire faded from the background. His heart sank as he learned that his rival was pointing at the ball and not his honor. Hahaha!
Sendoh: Let's play!
The sun was scorching, and it was noon. The good news is that the rookie agreed to play basketball with him. The desire to win raged between them even though they were in the thick of a tough competition that wasn't even an official game. The grumpy man proved to be adept at one-on-one games. Therefore, the spiky head competed with his skills quite well. That alone sparked a different rivalry, the ability to use technique.
Even though the game hadn't even begun yet, Sendoh was already having second thoughts. He wishes he could get rid of this grumpy man from his mind, but he is aware that it is impossible given that they are both basketball players. There's a big chance that they will cross paths again during the tournament. What is it about Rukawa that he has become so connected to him?
He admires the rookie's awareness, proving that he understands that the game is about more than just his ability to put the ball in the basket. His unwavering desire to improve, the determination that can't be replaced or taught, arises naturally from the inside. He has a strong will, and his confidence boils up regardless of the opponent, location, or status of the game. He is driven, willing to go to any length to succeed, and has the determination to play for victory.
Although Rukawa's trouble sleeping the night before was a problem, the reality that he constantly remembered and overheard Sendoh's loud laughter was a bigger issue. This is his chance to completely wipe Sendoh from his consciousness. Who on earth doesn't appreciate watching his rival's entire body motion, starting with his powerful leg muscles and hip rotation and the segmental rotation of his trunk and shoulder joint? His whip-like movements are executed in silhouette by his little muscles in his forearm, hand, and elbow extension when he plays. In their last minute, he focused on his defense. Their score is tied, and his rival has possession of the ball.
The game was almost over, but up until this point, they weren't sure if their senses would stop remembering one another after this game. However, they are confused as to why they become depressed every time the game is nearing its end, wishing they could pause this moment and spend more time together. Sendoh is standing in the shooting spot, ready to release the ball. Rukawa attempted to stop it from entering the ring, but it did so smoothly. Sendoh wins the game. He observed how their rivals got stronger as the match went on, but in the end, he still came out on top. They put out their blazing matches. There were no spoken words or audience present. All that could be heard was the sound of magic under the ring. It was exciting and calming to feel the cold wind and warm sun together.
The two players stayed hunched over and panting after the ball hit the ground, waiting for the first to speak. Rukawa observed as Sendoh picked up the ball off the ground and handed it to him. He never took his gaze away from his rival as he took the ball from the other hand.
Sendoh: Nice game!
Rukawa: Thanks.
Sendoh unexpectedly recalls his actual goal for the day. He gave the grumpy man a full-body stare. Fortunately, he was relieved of his anxiety and hesitancy as he came closer to him. However, he felt something else—a feeling he had never experienced with another person. He wasn't sure what the new feelings were that had sprung up on him, but he knew it was a warm feeling in his heart.
Sendoh: Let's do it again next time.
Rukawa: I'll defeat you.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Even though Rukawa is naturally snobby and grumpy, Sendoh found him to be incredibly fascinating and yearned for more from him. He had previously intended to forget about him, but after spending the day with him, he came up with a new plan, one in which he is unsure if he will receive anything in return.
Another school day of sleeping through all of his classes, napping on the roof during break, and arriving on the bike without giving anyone a second glance. He can comfortably feel the wind on his skin while riding his bike, which helps him sleep. The bubbles coming from his nose as he sleeps are getting bigger. He is not even bothered by the ogling onlookers' stares or the drivers' yells as he hits with their headlights. The sudden feeling of his tire bouncing on the sidewalks caused him to stop pedaling, and his body sagged and appeared electrified. That meant he'd arrived. He stretched his arms and rubbed his eyes to try to wake himself up before he let out a loud yawn. He walked directly to the bench, leaving his duffel bag on top, and set his bike to the side. He reached for his ball and began to dribble toward the three-point line.
Every time he steps onto the basketball court, he is transported to another world. As he touched that orange ball and threw it under the ring, his body was uncontrollable, his spirit appeared to be on fire, and his senses were wild and awake. He pictured two players trying to double-team him, trapping him, and pressing up against him. To get away from those two, he dribbled the ball backward. He'll retreat after his successful trap dribble attempt. He then realized that he was once again trapped by the two players in front of him, which gave him the upper hand moving down the floor. Right trap dribble. Eyes forward. Push back hard. He also made a space between himself and the defenders. He stood firm. Push back again. He ran into the three-point line and faked moving forward before quickly turning to his back and moving ahead to the other side to shoot the ball. His gaze followed the ball until it came to a stop on a bench. He stomped sluggishly over to the ball and picked it up. With one hand, he took hold of it and then stood up straight. Hold on a second. His eyes dilated when he noticed a man lying on the bench. He thought he knew that man. He turned to look at his back to see if the man he had just seen was the first person that came to mind.
Not only does basketball fire up his spirit, awaken his senses, and energize his body, but so does this man. He had trouble sleeping for several nights because of this man. His beaming face seemed to reflect on everyone he saw outside. His chuckle seems to resound in his ears. He exhaled a deep sigh. He turned around and faced him. He rubbed his brow in disbelief as to why this man was snoozing there. He searched the area for anyone who might be waiting for him or for a friend who had just left for a short while. Or perhaps it was just his wild imagination, but he might be sleeping there after someone abandoned the spiky head there. His hand was placed on his waist as he drew nearer to him. He considered rousing him from his sleep and inviting him to join him. But he remembered their last one-on-one. He didn't expect their game to go so well, and he also didn't expect to be struggling not to let his rival's presence affect him that day. Perhaps it would be best not to disturb him so as to keep him from becoming sidetracked again by hearing him laugh, seeing him smile, and watching him move. Everyone does those moves, so why is he so distracted by this man's presence?
He tries to regain his position on the court. He was attempting to practice his cross-over moves, shooting technique, and ball handling, but his gaze kept turning to that man. He scratched his head before putting his ball under his arms and moving in the direction of his bag. Given that the man who keeps him up at night was present, he believed there was no point in practicing himself. He slung the bag strap over his shoulder and gave the spiky head one more long look. He is frustrated with himself and puzzled as to why this man is bothering him so much. He stopped practicing because he didn't want to wake him up from his deep sleep, but now that he was about to leave, he couldn't seem to step outside the court. He turned to look around once more, scanning his surroundings for anyone who might pass for this man's friend. It wouldn't be so bad, he reasoned, if he set aside a few minutes to sit on the bench and watch for a possible companion for this dozing man.
He leaned back against the backrest and kept an eye on the time displayed next to the light post. He became angry as he realized that perhaps the spiky head had gone there by himself. He stood up furiously, made his way to his bike, and stormed off the court. He thought it was a waste of time to stay there for almost an hour and was moving his feet so quickly from the pedal. He took big steps up the stairs, skipping two, and arrived at his apartment. He didn't even bother to leave his shoes and bag where he had left them. He simply entered this bathroom to freshen up. The shower soothed him as he submerged his body in the warm water, clearing his foggy head. The spiky head suddenly came back to his mind. More irritated than ever, he swiftly dried himself and grabbed whatever clothes he could find from his closet. He dashed towards the building as fast as he could, as if the spiky head's life depended on it. He was angry at himself for leaving him there alone. He grabs his bike and pedals there. The moment he realized the court was only a short walk from his apartment, the short ride turned into a minute of boredom on his face. Well, that doesn't matter anymore. He was relieved to see him still there in his deep sleep, and that nothing had changed about his position as he ran toward him. When he got close to him, he made the decision to wake him up. He was distracted when a ball landed on his feet from the group of kids playing there. He picked it up, casting another glance at the dozing man, wondering if perhaps he had been struck repeatedly by the kids running around. He approached the children, handed them the ball, and asked for a favor.
Rukawa: Kids, go play over there.
Kid: Why, mister? We don't make a lot of noise here. We're only having fun.
Rukawa: Did you notice his head? His head will be punctured when the ball strikes him.
Kid: Okay.
When he observed the group of children taking his advice to go play at the other location, his state of mind quickly returned to normal. With just the two of them in the court, the area fell silent yet again. His thoughts appeared to be racing once more around him. He lost count of the number of people he nearly hit while asleep on his bike, as well as the number of pedestrians who rolled his wheel and the number of busy people whose time was disrupted when he hit a car. He didn't even give a damn about anyone or anything in this world. But when it comes to this spiky head, he almost flies back to him and wears a cape to check him out there. His nose let out a mushroom-shaped sigh. He noticed that his actions seemed to change, and up until this point, he had no idea why. Standing next to him, he approached him. Without realizing it, he watched his face while his body hunched over as if it were moving by itself, and his face was getting closer and closer.
His eyes are as wide as they can be while he watches the face this close, causing his Adam's apple to bob up and down. The spiky head was simply dozing off, not even displaying any emotion at all, but it seemed as though all the tension inside him had vanished as he watched this man calmly enjoying his sleep. Even when he was competing on the court, he recalled how his charming smile and infectious chuckle seemed to calm his raging emotions. He is baffled as to what is wrong with this person or why he seemed to shift his mood by making the surroundings calm and at ease. He had no idea that he had changed, and he didn't even know why his body seemed to be moving quickly when he was nearby. His jumbled thoughts overtook him, and he didn't realize the spiky head's eyes were already open.
Incredulous at why he had brought his face so close to his, he took a step back, feeling the heat in his hot, flushed face and ears. Why did he get so close to look at his face? What made him seem agitated and concerned about him? He observed him slowly rising from the bench where he was lying and rubbing his eyes with his arm. He remained crouched next to the bench, appearing frozen, and wondering if this man had seen him looking at him closely. When he came face-to-face with him, his eyes blinked quickly and were frozen in shock. He rose slowly, thinking about the best excuse he could think of so that he wouldn't think badly of him.
Sendoh: EEEHHH?! Hahahaha! I didn't realize I dozed off here!
He was relieved to learn that he had not been caught earlier, but seeing his radiant smile made him feel uneasy. His lips seemed to be trembling, and he still couldn't speak. He was certain that if he tried to speak now, no sound would come out of his mouth. He looked around, and fortunately, he noticed something behind the bench that would allow him to get out of this situation. He made an attempt, used a more serious expression, and moved toward the bench's back. He picked up the cat and hugged it as he walked away from the court.
Sendoh: Hey! Wait!
When a hand touched his shoulder, his body seemed to freeze. He released a strong exhale when he turned around to face him.
Rukawa: What?!
Sendoh: Can you tell me what time your practice ends?
Rukawa: Why?
Sendoh: Let's play a one-on-one game. Are you okay with that? I've been sitting here waiting for you for a while. I was waiting, but I was unaware that I dozed off. Hahahaha! It's a good thing you came.
His hands continue to ruffle down his pants to maintain his concentration at this time. His words are ordinary, but why do they seem so sweet to hear? He kept trying to control his fidgety hands as he felt eyes on him. He forgot that he was being asked what time he got out of school. He's not sure why, but when he was asked about this, he felt a little excited. Hearing him say that he had been waiting for him and that the reason for his arrival moved him. He gave him a quick glance and noticed his eyes waiting for his response. His cheeks are probably flushing right now, so he lowered his head and gave him a secret smile in response.
Rukawa: 5:00 PM.
He looked all over the place. It's tidy and furnished. He didn't understand why he was perched on the edge of the bed. When Rukawa appeared in the bathroom, he was startled. As he walked up to him, he felt uneasy. He was already bad enough, but what made things worse was when Rukawa sat beside him on the bed.
Rukawa: Take off your clothes.
Sendoh: Um, just a second. I'll just take a deep breath and relax.
Rukawa: Take your clothes off so we can begin.
Sendoh: Could you give me a few minutes before we start?
Rukawa: Shut up.
Rukawa assisted him in removing his top. His body was covered in red veins that felt like they were about to burst from heat and restraint.
Sendoh: Are you sure, Kaede? Umm... I'm very tense.
Rukawa: Turn around.
Sendoh: But Kaede, I'm terribly nervous.
Rukawa: You don't want to? It's up to you.
Sendoh: Wait!
He felt someone pulling his legs when he opened his eyes. It's Koshino.
Koshino: Sendoh, get up! Hurry up! Let's watch the Shohoku match!
He walked into the bathroom and activated the shower. He recalled his dream before Koshino woke him up.
Sendoh: Shit... My dream was cut short! Nearly there! Huh?! What is going on with me?
On Saturday, Sendoh invited his friend Koshino to go to Shohoku. He chuckled slightly as he remembered him and Rukawa being together in a dream—not just together, but together in a strange room. Exciting things were about to happen, but Koshino woke him up and stopped it. He scowled, regretting getting up so early. They are in a dream, in a world where their choices are endless, but the cruel part is that they hadn't even made it to first base before he awoke. Darn it.
Koshino: Sendoh, what is this for?
Sendoh: I just need to do something.
Koshino: Is that Rukawa?
Sendoh: Where?! Where is he?
Koshino: Hahaha! I told you! Why do you want to go to him?
Sendoh: One-on-one.
Koshino was convinced that his friend's goal with Rukawa was not just basketball. He still couldn't understand why he was still trying to deny his interest in the Shohoku rookie.
Koshino: Why are you going this far? You can ask for a one-on-one match with our teammates.
Sendoh: Shut up, Kosh.
Koshino: I get it. We're just your teammates. He's your crush.
Sendoh: I don't have a crush on him!
Koshino: Then, why did you even invite me to come with you? Are you nervous?
Sendoh: Who's nervous?!
Koshino: What do you need from him?
Sendoh: He is a great player. He makes playing basketball against me extremely challenging.
Koshino: I know, but Ouzomi is with us. You can also get a tough game with Maki and Fujima, so why Rukawa, a rookie? Why don't you just admit it? You like him.
Sendoh: He is not my crush.
Koshino: Really? Not your crush? Okay. When is his birthday?
Sendoh: January 1. AAAHHH! Shut up and just come with me!
When they arrived at the public court, Sendoh came to a halt when he noticed Rukawa and Mitsui sitting on the bench, as if they had just finished their game. He noticed that Rukawa's mood was different when he was with his teammate. When they played one-on-one, he was treated differently. The younger man seems to want to knock him out every time he sees him. He realized he wanted him to be at ease with him, to regard him as a friend rather than a rival.
Sendoh: Kosh, let's go home.
Koshino: Eh? We've just arrived! Why haven't you approached him yet?
Sendoh: He must be tired. Maybe next time.
Koshino visits Sendoh's flat before heading to Osaka. He had remembered his buddy's sad expression since they had arrived from Shohoku. He stopped bothering him on their trip. He was aware that seeing the two Shohoku players on the court together hurt his best friend. He teases his buddy repeatedly about Shohoku's ace player. Yeah, he did it on purpose, for fun. Seeing his buddy blush and giggle fills him with joy. But he was greatly saddened by what he saw—a moody spiky head murmuring as if someone had stolen his candy with the name Rukawa. As a buddy, he will find a way to return a smile to his spiky friend's perverted lips.
Koshino: Sendoh, are you there? I'm coming in.
Sendoh: What is that Kosh? It's not my birthday.
Koshino: For you, you must not have moved on yesterday.
Sendoh: Move on, where? Is this a prank?
Koshino: Why don't you open it?
Sendoh's eyes widened when he saw his buddy's gift. A square pillow has a print of Rukawa's entire face on it. He chuckled at first, but his expression quickly changed. He had a strong suspicion that Koshino was tricking him once again.
Sendoh: Silly! I told you I didn't have a crush on him!
Koshino: Are you sure you don't have a crush on him? Fine!
Koshino attempted to take the pillow he had given him, but his buddy's arms had almost completely wrapped it. He just sighed, but he still intends to get the pillow and force his overly sentimental buddy to confess his admiration for Rukawa.
Koshino: Give it back to me!
Sendoh: Why should I give it back to you? Don't tell me you have a crush on him! Don't you dare!
Koshino: I don't have a crush on him! If you still deny it, I'll just give it to his fans!
Sendoh: No way! You already gave it to me! You can't take it back!
Koshino: So, do you have a crush on him?
Sendoh: I will use it when I play.
Koshino: Playing what?
Sendoh: Basketball! Hey! Why are you looking at me like that?
Koshino: Basketball in your bed?!
Sendoh: Pervert! You just want to make fun of me!
Koshino: It's not like that. I just don't want to see you sad.
He was touched by what Koshino said. He likes to tease and give tirades, but he is a good friend. He thought of teasing Koshino as well.
Sendoh: You don't want me to be sad because... You have a crush on me?
Koshino: What are you talking about? YUCK!
Sendoh: Do you want a pillow with my face on it? I will also give you one!
Koshino: I'm out!
Let's return to the room where Sendoh first experienced his incomprehensible emotions, weird sounds that seem to originate in his head, and boundless dreams with Rukawa. The pillow with the rookie's face was the first thing he saw after freshening up. He hugged himself in shock.
Sendoh: WHOOOAAA! I get nervous if I face the real one again.
He starts to dress, but he notices that the pillow is staring at him. He flipped back the pillow so he could concentrate on getting dressed. He sat on the bed, his phone in his hand. He giggled. Hikoichi had given him the complete personal information he had asked for. He has also been looking at Rukawa's pictures on social media, which have been posted by fan pages and the Shohoku High Official Page for a few days.
His attention was drawn to the pillow. He pressed it to his chest. He then looked at Rukawa's photo. For the first time, he was impressed by the appearance of another male. When he was messy and drenched in sweat, he looked hotter. They're sexy even when they're glaring. That attractive nose and perfect neck ratio never fail to attract him.
Sendoh: You're better looking in person. I always want to see you smile.
He looked up, not realizing his hand was already inside his boxers. He closed his eyes and caught his breath. His hand moved even faster on its own.
Sendoh: Aaahhh... Kaede... aaahhh...
After a few minutes, his whole face and upper body reddened. He regained consciousness. He looked at Rukawa's face again. Luckily, it didn't spill.
Sendoh: Kaede, I'm sorry! I did not mean it! Believe me! I only have good intentions for you! It won't happen again! AAAHHH! I'm really messed up! I'm talking to a pillow too. Oh right... I should focus on the real Kaede.
He put the pillow on the headboard and went to the bathroom to clean himself. He tapped his head, realizing everything his best friend was saying seemed right.
Sendoh: I will find a way to get closer to you, Kaede Rukawa.
Sendoh's feet surely led him back to Shohoku. He chose not to bring his best friend, Koshino, because he knew he would mock him and lecture him if he failed again. While strolling, he glanced through Rukawa's saved personal information on his phone. He learned a lot about Rukawa with the help of Hikoichi.
Sendoh: He only cares about basketball and sleeping. He's still grumpy, no matter how many times we play. If I purposefully lose, he may lose interest in playing with me. I need to know his weaknesses.
He went right to Rukawa's place. He was considering what to say. He was about to knock when the door unexpectedly opened. They were both staring at each other.
Rukawa: What are you doing here?
Sendoh: (Shit! I have to think of an excuse!) I must have lost my way. I'm looking for my crush... ice.
Rukawa: Idiot. It's an apartment, not a convenience store.
Sendoh: Hahaha! You're right! Umm... Can you... Can you accompany me?
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Won't you even let me in?
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Okay, let's play one-on-one!
Rukawa's eyes didn't even twitch. There was no emotion in them, only the will to defeat him. He resembles a challenging riddle, an immovable rock, or a locked box, and Sendoh desires to discover this inner gem. Meanwhile, he attempted to draw his focus away from the rookie's attacks. While the grumpy man was wiping away his sweat, he returned his sight to him, from his forehead to his neck. He was captivated by the grumpy man's scent when they were playing.
Sendoh: What is his perfume? He smells like a baby. Hehehe!
He continued to have an unrealistically perfect vision of the rookie as their playing time went on. There is something special about the grumpy man's hand movements—the constant bouncing of the ball off the ground with one hand, moving as though no one can touch it. He suddenly wants to be that ball, yearning for his touch. He wishes he could turn back time so he could spend more hours with him. If only he could stop time, he would have liked to have had more chances to get his unrequited feelings recognized by the grumpy man one day. He wants to do more with him.
Sendoh: Rukawa, come on, let's have dinner.
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Come on, please?
Rukawa: You ask as if you were prepared to give me dinner for me.
Sendoh: Hahaha! Yeah! My treat!
Rukawa: You should have said it right away, so we don't have to ask questions and waste our time here.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
An upbeat ambience can be found in the local diner. As the sun went down, the grand front exterior welcomed it, shining the entire area and bringing it to a nightlife. It is a joy for their ears and the ideal way to relax by hearing a peaceful sound. The catchy melody had the two of them entranced, and the others appeared to move to its beat. As soon as they walk in, everyone's mood is lifted by their charisma. The waitress who handed over the menu blushed at the same time.
Meanwhile, Sendoh realized there was something silly about Rukawa. He merely stared back and let the grumpy man place a hefty order. While scanning the menu, the young man seems to be a child who is excited to eat. He seems to have identified his weakness. He chuckled when he suddenly remembered the proverb, The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. He finally figured out how to tame his crush.
Rukawa has a huge frame like him, but his physique is leaner compared to his. He was surprised because he eats a lot. Everyone in the restaurant turned to face their seats after Rukawa burped loudly. After passing gas, Rukawa's face looked innocent as he pointed at the guy in front of him. Sendoh just rubbed his cheeks and apologized.
Sendoh: Hahaha! What is that? Do you burp in front of other people all the time?
Rukawa: Nope. I only did it to you.
Sendoh: By the way, I have something to ask.
Rukawa: What?
Sendoh: Have you ever had a girlfriend?
Rukawa: Yeah.
Sendoh: (How did that happen?! He is too meticulous to be interested in others. How did that girl get his attention?) How long? Is that serious?
Rukawa: Six months. Serious.
Sendoh: (It annoys me, what kind of girl is she?! How did Rukawa like her?! What does she have?) Where is your ex now?
Rukawa: Are you going to flirt with her?
Sendoh: Of course not! I was just wondering how you two got along.
Rukawa: She's my childhood friend.
Sendoh: (Childhood friend?! How can I surpass her?! She was the only one who became his girlfriend. Why only her?) Is she here in Shohoku too?
Rukawa: She's in the US.
Sendoh: YEEESSS!
Sendoh abruptly stood up from his seat, knowing that his expected rival was far away.
Rukawa: What happened to you?
Sendoh: Hahaha! I'm just really in a good mood!
Today was his lucky day. He discovered Rukawa's apartment, they were able to play one-on-one, they had dinner, and above all, his ex-girlfriend is in another country. The odds appear to be on his side. He has been grinning all day, and he is even more happy to find that his crush seems to be comfortable around him. A rough game. A quick chat. A few sneaky glances at him. He is unable to articulate how he feels or put it into words, and he desires a sense of happiness when he is with him.
As they made their way to the train station, he couldn't help but keep looking back at Rukawa. As long as his crush is standing next to him, he doesn't care about the crowded surroundings, the noise from the vehicles, or the horns on the busy street. It had been a long day, and when he returned home to Ryonan, he felt as if his body would collapse. Having Rukawa by his side and spending the day with him teaches him that a home is more than just bricks. Having him around already made him feel at home.
Sendoh: Thanks for accompanying me here.
Rukawa: I just want to make sure you don't get lost here.
Sendoh: If you don't want me to get lost, just take me home with you.
Rukawa: Numbskull!
Sendoh: Hahaha!
The spiky head is determined to win his friendship, so he returns to Shohoku to find out what he does after training. He spotted his crush going straight to the supermarket's pet section. He moved to the other shelf rack so he wouldn't catch him.
Sendoh: He has a pet. In that case, I should also get friendly with his pet.
After taking the cat food from beneath the rack, Rukawa saw that the spiky hair from the other rack seemed to be following him. He recalled the shark in the sea. He believed he knew who had that kind of hair, but it was obvious that he was hiding from him, so he peered into the corner side mirror to catch the shark.
Sendoh breathed a sigh of relief. He expected to be caught. He looked through the other rack again, but Rukawa was gone. He was walking so fast that he bumped into the person behind him.
Sendoh: WHOOOAAA!
Rukawa: Are you following me?
Sendoh: (What will I say? Shocks!) Um, I forgot to ask you something yesterday. Hehehe!
Rukawa: What?!
Sendoh: Can I have your number?
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Why? (pout)
Rukawa: You have a team member with a strong radar. You can't possibly not know.
Sendoh: (I need to think quickly.) Umm... Can we have a regular one-on-one?
Rukawa: Yeah. Bye.
Sendoh: Um, I want to invite you to my apartment.
Rukawa: Why am I going to your house?
Sendoh: Because... we are... friends.
Rukawa was puzzled at Sendoh after hearing the word friends. Sendoh almost melts in shame as he runs out of words every time they are together.
Rukawa: Okay.
Sendoh: Really?! Next week, when my practice ends early, I will pick you up!
Rukawa: Yeah.
Sendoh was thrilled to have scored yet again with the one he liked. He was baffled as to why Rukawa followed him to the train station.
Sendoh: Are you going somewhere else?
Rukawa: I'll come with you.
Sendoh: I'll always text and call you. Please answer my calls.
Rukawa: In one condition.
Sendoh: What is that?
Rukawa: Don't put your hair up if you play hide and seek.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Koshino has counted 89 sheep, but his spiky friend still hasn't shown up. He sat back on the balcony, leaned his elbows against the metal rail, and took a moment to watch the people walking by the apartment's ground level. He pulled out his phone to call him once more when, all of a sudden, he noticed a man with spiky hair going toward the apartment. Though he was ready with his sermonic tone, he grinned when he spotted that his friend was wearing a newlywed-in-love smile.
Koshino: Ooowww... That's what we call a love-struck smile!
Sendoh: Hey bro! How long have you been here? Why didn't you call me?
Koshino: I can't contact you.
Sendoh: Hehehe! I forgot! I turned off my phone.
Koshino: I just noticed that your cell phone is turned off when you're with your crush. You really don't want to be bothered. Why do you smile like that?
Sendoh: Secret. (blush)
Koshino: Come on, share something! Why did you go back there?
Sendoh: I already know the answer to your question.
Koshino: So, what is it?
Sendoh: Hmm... Secret. (blush)
Koshino: Okay. I'm your buddy, and you are my pervert friend. Let's talk about your feelings, sexuality, and future goals. It won't be a problem if you're not straight.
Sendoh: I am a man.
Koshino: Yeah. But he's a man too. We will support you, but you have to be careful, both of you.
Sendoh: I know.
Koshino: Are you sure he's the one? Are you seriously interested in him?
Sendoh: Yes. My entire being—my mind, my heart, my soul, even my wonderful body—will gamble on him.
Koshino: Shut up! Are you prepared for what others will say about you? our school? and your parents as well?
With every what-if his friend was mulling over in his mind, Sendoh went serious. He's got a point. There are a lot of things to think about, and he needs to get Rukawa and him ready for the next stage. Even though he had just begun, he was prepared to take a chance on him. All that matters to him is being with him.
Sendoh: Don't worry, bro. I appreciate your concern for me and my boyfriend.
Koshino: Eh?
Sendoh: Hahaha! I mean soon-to-be boyfriend. I have to deal with their gossip, discrimination, judgment, and whatever else is racing through their heads, but I can handle them. Trust me on this.
Rukawa was startled to hear what sounded like a loud foot stepping on the stairs outside, which prompted him to go outside and see whose moron was making the loud noise by climbing the stairs with heavy feet.
Rukawa: Why is this spiky idiot here again?
Sendoh: Here he is again. He smells like a baby. I feel like I want to kiss him. EEEHHH!
When he saw him standing in front of his door, staring at him without blinking, he simply took a long breath and continued to stare at him with his boring expression. He wondered what had happened to this spiky head while climbing the steps and arriving here stunned. He shakes his shoulder and smacks his head with his palm to knock the daydream's spiked head awake.
Rukawa: What are you doing here?
Sendoh: Um, I can't visit you here next Friday. Our game is too early.
Rukawa: Good.
Sendoh: Go home immediately after training. Don't go anywhere. Don't stay up late. Do not talk to strangers!
Rukawa: Are you my mother?
Sendoh: Hahaha! Daddy suits me better!
Rukawa: Yuck.
Sendoh: Come with me. Let's go to our home.
Rukawa: I only have one house.
Sendoh: This is your house. The one in Ryonan is our home.
Rukawa: Idiot.
Sendoh: I won't see you next week, so please sleep at our home now. Come on. Daddy is waiting for you.
Rukawa: No.
Sendoh: Alright. I'll take you here tomorrow before our game starts.
Rukawa: Why should I go with you?
Sendoh: I went grocery shopping yesterday. There's a lot of stock in the house. You won't be hungry even if you stay there for a few days. Let's go?
Rukawa: Sure.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
When they entered the platform, they saw that it was much busier than the waiting area. The benches on the platform were all filled to capacity. Many travelers were moving about or sitting on their bags. Students in groups were constantly moving from one end of the place to the other while looking down at their smartphones and carrying cameras. As more and more passengers arrived, the area became increasingly crowded and noisy. Sendoh was not even bothered by the noise. Instead, he felt thankful that the area where they were now standing was so packed so that he could be nearer to Rukawa. When he noticed the two ladies staring at them, he quickly pulled him away from them.
Girls: Hi guys!
Sendoh nodded, but Rukawa just looked straight ahead. They are beautiful. At first glance, it is obvious that they have something in mind.
Girl 2: I think I know you. It's like I've seen you before. Are you both college students?
Rukawa: Elementary.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
He was surprised by Rukawa's response to the lady who wanted to approach them.
Girl 1: He has a sense of humor.
Girl 2: What's your name?
Rukawa: Gori.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Sendoh laughs loudly every time he talks back. Rukawa, on the other hand, just had a serious face and was obviously uncomfortable with the two girls sticking to him.
Sendoh: I'm King Kong.
Girl 1: What's your grade?
Rukawa: Kinder. King Kong studied in the nursery for three years.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
He had been laughing so much that he was massaging his stomach. With his silly responses, he couldn't help but pinch his companion. The girls had a feeling Rukawa was playing them, so they both invited him alone.
Girl 2: Can you come with us?
Sendoh: I'm sorry. We have somewhere to go.
Rukawa: Wow.
Girl 1: Come on, King Kong.
Sendoh: I'm sorry, girls. I'm already taken.
He observes the girls who invited them as they get up from their seats in disappointment. Meanwhile, they reach the next stop. People leaving the platform are pushing and bumping into one another as they rush to the doorstep, bringing their bodies very close together. The spiky head felt shy. He could smell his hair, and the fact that their faces were centimeters apart made him giggle. He considered not allowing his body to lean on him too much so as not to take advantage of Rukawa.
As passengers passed by, a new group of passengers boarded, nearly bumping into them. The spiky head notices a different group of girls passing by as they walk. In no way did he allow them to contact or grind their bodies against his. He rapidly grasps the horizontal metal pole and quickly covers Rukawa with his arm and half of his body. While keeping an eye on the outside through the window, he turns to look at Rukawa. He made a self-promised commitment to protect his crush at all costs. He lowers his head to make sure the girls won't notice their faces as they approach them. Yeah. He grinned ear to ear when his defense mechanism functioned. Hihihi!
When they arrived at a different station, an elderly passenger boarded and struggled to find a seat. All of the seats, even the priority seat, have been occupied. She can't even walk normally and appears to have weak knees. Sendoh felt bad for the elderly woman, so he looked around for a seat that might be free for her. He got distracted when he saw Rukawa staring at a man who was sitting in front of them quietly and unbothered by the presence of the elderly woman. Rukawa's murderous stare at the haughty-appearing man in front of him shocked him. He was so afraid that he almost leaped out of his seat to get away from them.
Sendoh: Grandma, this seat is available.
Grandma: You're welcome, pretty boy.
Sendoh: Hahaha! I'm not pretty! I'm handsome.
Rukawa: Pretty boy.
Sendoh: Hey! Stop with the pretty, please! Hahaha!
Sendoh was moved by what Rukawa did for the elderly lady. Despite the fact that he is silent, unsociable, and terrifying to others, he has an amazing heart and has sympathy for other people.
When he arrived at Sendoh's place, he was impressed by an ultra-minimalist black and white kitchen with all-sleek surfaces. He finds it unbelievable that this spiky head is fashionable at home. The hanging lighting glistened against the white wall paint, illuminating the dark furnishings, which blended perfectly with the white glossy subway tiles. The cheery ambiance of this kitchen perfectly fits the personality of the person who lives here. He observed the spiky head as he entered the white kitchen, searching for some colorful wares and setting up the equipment for their dinner. He hasn't seen any food and doesn't smell any food in the air, but the sight of this attractive place and the pastel colors of the paint whet his stomach. He continued to observe the apartment's interior while seated on a wooden stool. The whole ambiance puts him in a good mood, except something in the living room made his blood boil. To confirm what he was seeing, he hurried to the couch. He grabbed hold of a sizable square cushion with his face imprinted on the pillow cover.
Rukawa: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!
Sendoh: (I need to think of an excuse!) Um, Rukawa! The pillow, that is...
Rukawa: Do I look like a punching bag?!
He was worried that Rukawa would discover his hidden admiration for him, so he rapidly came up with a reason to convince him.
Sendoh: Um, you have a fan who is my classmate. When she found out we were friends, she requested that I give you that.
Rukawa: Fine. I'll take it.
He panicked when Rukawa took the pillow. He quickly grabbed the pillow and locked it in his bedroom closet.
Rukawa: You said that was mine! Give that to me!
Sendoh: I don't want to!
Rukawa: Give that to me! Give that to me! Give that to me!
Sendoh: Are you interested in the person who gave that to you?
Rukawa: I'm interested in the pillow.
Sendoh: I don't have enough pillows, so I won't give them to you.
Rukawa: Idiot!
Rukawa strolled back to the stool chair while scowling and crossing his arms over his chest, which was noticed by Sendoh. He went after him and took a quick glance at his face. The rookie made a rapid leftward head turn. While still keeping his head tilted to the right, he followed his gaze in that way.
Sendoh: Hahaha! I apologize if I didn't give you the pillow.
He didn't say anything, so the spiky head moved to the right side, where the rookie was staring. Again, Rukawa hastily averted his eyes, but this time he bent his head, staring at the floor. Sendoh got down on one knee and looked up to meet his eyes.
Sendoh: Please don't be upset with me.
Rukawa: What will you do to my face?! Will you use a needle to prick my face?! Don't even try to bewitch me!
Sendoh: Hahaha! Do I look like a witch?!
Rukawa: You resemble a broom more.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
After hearing that he resembled a broom, Sendoh burst out laughing. He made an attempt to stand up while laughing, but he still fell on his back. He saw a hand reach out to assist him in standing. His uncontrollable laughter was stopped by this. He slowly lifted his hand to the hand that was waiting for him as their eyes locked. But before he could touch it, Rukawa swiftly stepped away from the stool and rolled his eyes at him while walking towards the refrigerator.
Sendoh: Hahaha! You are awfully sweet!
His eyes narrowed as he noticed a large supply of food in the fridge. He quickly looked for a target, grabbed a knife, and got a plate to eat. In his haste to grab the knife, he accidentally cut his finger. Sendoh dashed up to him and quickly grabbed his hand. He sucked the blood up and washed it away. His face turned tomato red, and he yanked his hand away from the spiky head angrily.
Rukawa: Don't do that again!
Sendoh: Why? It's just a finger. You are so grumpy!
Rukawa: You have no idea what I touched last.
Sendoh: Hahaha! You know how to joke now!
Rukawa: I'm not kidding!
Sendoh: Hey, do you want to know what I last touched?
Rukawa: Yuck.
Sendoh: Hahaha! I will cook for you from now on. It is unhealthy to eat only takeout food. You could get sick. You should eat healthier and drink less coffee.
He spent the entire time staring at Sendoh's face. On the court, they always make eye contact, but he doesn't understand why his face gets hot when they face each other or talk in normal situations. He also noticed how well this spiky head fit into his white shirt. He certainly takes care of his body through healthy eating and exercise. He is completely baffled as to why he becomes irritated when someone else tells him what to do but listens when the spiky head preaches to him.
Sendoh: Why are you looking at me?
Rukawa: Heh. You talk a lot. You almost beat my teacher.
Sendoh: Am I handsome?
Rukawa: I'm more handsome.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Rukawa's eyes wandered, and he saw a laptop. He remembered the document he had to complete.
Rukawa: Hey, I'll borrow your laptop.
Sendoh: Okay. There is no password.
He switched on the laptop and waited. He was shocked by the screen's background.
Rukawa: What is the meaning of this?
Sendoh: Umm... (Shit!)
Sendoh couldn't move from where he was standing since he had forgotten he set the Rukawa's face in the background. He gave a sly grin, while Sendoh still couldn't think of an excuse.
Rukawa: Do you think I'm handsome?
Rukawa returned his question. He blushed cutely and mumbled a little, still unable to speak at his teasing.
Rukawa: Wow.
Sendoh: Rukawa. That means nothing. Um, okay. I will change it.
He did nothing more than shake his head as he observed him appear embarrassed, sneaky, or caught in the act. He cast a quick glance at him, his face still flushed and unable to look him in the eyes. He made an effort to maintain a blank expression as he passed the laptop. He quickly turned around and chuckled inside as he realized that his face was the background of the spiky head.
Despite being busy with the district tournament, Sendoh finds a way to visit Rukawa once or twice a week. He feels recharged when he sees his crush. They played one-on-one in the public court. The spiky head was in such a good mood that he beat the rookie. He suddenly wondered if Rukawa was playing with others whenever he wasn't visiting.
Sendoh: When I'm not here and you have free time, who do you play one-on-one with?
Rukawa: Mitsui.
Sendoh: He invited you?
Rukawa: No. I asked him.
He couldn't look at Rukawa as they walked to the train station. When he learned it was Rukawa who had invited Mitsui, he suddenly felt a pinch in his chest. He was disappointed to know that he wasn't the only one playing with him. He wanted to say that he could call him anytime and that he could fly right away for him if he wanted to play, but he couldn't.
Sendoh: Won't you come with me to the station?
Rukawa: No.
Sendoh: Okay. Take care.
He was discouraged. He simply desired that Rukawa regard him as a friend rather than a rival. He is considering how to improve his relationship with him, despite the fact that they meet frequently. What else does he need to do to get through to his heart? He is not a self-centered man, and he can't recall the last time he was possessive of someone. He was afraid that he wasn't the only one Rukawa was treating this close like a friend, or worse, that there was someone even closer to the young man than him.
Rukawa: We don't have training tomorrow. You're coming here, right?
Sendoh: Huh? (Is he inviting me?)
Sendoh tried to open his mouth to respond, but instead he just remained silent and gazed.
Rukawa: Never mind.
Sendoh: Huh?! Of course, I will come back here! If you want, I will live here! (What am I talking about? It's embarrassing!)
Rukawa: Idiot! Would you like to spend the night at my place?
Sendoh: Now?!
Rukawa: Yeah.
Sendoh's mouth felt open, and his entire face turned bright red. At the same time that his chest was heaving with excitement, he felt like he was going to explode. He brightened up again when he realized the young man seemed at ease with him.
Sendoh: Yes! Sure! Of course! Why not! Okay! Hehehe!
Rukawa: Weird.
Finally, the opportunity has come for him to enter his crush's house. He was sure that he would discover more about him.
Rukawa: Use the bathroom in my room.
Sendoh: It's fine to use the bathroom here.
Rukawa: One.
Sendoh: It's embarrassing to enter your room.
Rukawa: Two.
Sendoh: But that's your privacy.
Rukawa: Three.
Sendoh: Okay.
As he cast a quick glance around the room, he recalled that he had previously been in this space. He'd been here before, in a very neat, minimalist room with dim lighting, but he couldn't recall when. Yeah. His memories of this space came flooding back. He had seen it in his dream! To better remember the specifics of his dream, he drew nearer to the bed and sat on the edge. His eyes moved to the bathroom door as he reflected. He chewed his lower lips when he remembered Rukawa showing up from the bathroom and commanding him to strip! He leapt up from the edge of the bed, rose swiftly, and hurried for the door. His heart began to race, so he repeatedly tapped it to calm himself down.
Sendoh: Will that happen right now? or later? If my dream comes true, why not? Hihihi! Eh?! No, no, Akira! Kaede isn't like that. But if he insists, why not? EEEHHH! Woah! What was I thinking?
He inhaled deeply and began to hum softly, relaxing his mind and perverting ideas. He thought his troubles were over, but when he entered the restroom, the image of Rukawa demanding he strip off kept replaying in his mind. He chewed his lips, biting them to distract himself. He instantly switched on the shower to wash away his worries.
Sendoh: What's going on? Why am I suddenly nervous again? It's just the two of us here. He's not the type to do anything strange. But it's okay if he does. Eh? What on earth was I thinking? He gave me a formal welcome to his place. I shouldn't have any strange thoughts about him. Akira, calm down.
He started taking a shower as his eyes wandered around the bathroom. The paint is gray, and there aren't many toiletries. He remembered Rukawa's smell every time they played.
Sendoh: Why does he smell so good even though he only uses regular soap? His shampoo is just regular shampoo. No perfume or cologne His skin is so smooth, but he doesn't have any lotion. Even when he sweats, he always smells like a baby.
He noticed something hanging near the window—a dark-skinned boxer. His eyes grew larger. Something was telling his demon to take the boxer, but the other side of his brain was telling him not to. He nervously tapped his chest.
Sendoh: WHOOOAAA! What's going on? I have that too! I won't take that home. I need to get out of here!
He hurriedly came out of the bathroom, and his eyes wandered again. In his dream, the bed, window, and lampshade were in the right place. But he noticed something on the side table.
Sendoh: He uses baby powder. Hehehe! He's so cute!
Sendoh moved through the large, wall-mounted, full-length mirror that reflected the entire space. His gaze lingered on every inch of the wall, which was painted a calming shade of matte blue. What a soothing sight to have one nightstand lamp in the corner bathe the bedroom in a silvery glow. He put on his clothes and sat down on the king-size bed, which was covered in a thick comforter and had nice cushions. He relaxed further, resting his entire back and head against the velvety headboard, tufted like a biscuit and surrounded by bedside tables that match and have lamps on them. The room was peaceful and cozy. As he sat there, Sendoh was already shutting his eyes. Weariness was almost overpowering him.
Sendoh: WAAAHHH!
Rukawa: WHAAAT!
Sendoh: I'm sorry. Hehehe! Your house is so neat.
Rukawa: Sleep in my room.
Sendoh: Hey, I'm fine on the sofa.
Rukawa: One.
Sendoh: It's a shame that I'll be the one to sleep in bed.
Rukawa: Two.
Sendoh: Okay. Hehehe!
He felt comfortable in Rukawa's apartment. He doesn't like things or decorations. Just by the looks of it, he's the type that easily gets hotheaded when he sees even the slightest bit of dirt.
Sendoh: Rukawa, can I use your baby powder?
Rukawa: Do what you want.
Sendoh: Do you want me to put some in for you?
Rukawa: Yuck.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
It was difficult for him to put powder on his back because of his big arms. He almost jumped when Rukawa walked by him and put powder on his back.
Sendoh: I want to do the same to you.
Rukawa: I don't want to.
To keep Rukawa from fleeing, he grabbed his arm. Rukawa escaped because he is tough and knows how to fight. Rukawa threw him on the bed while clutching his arm tightly.
Rukawa: Don't try me. Idiot.
Sendoh blushed as he thought about their situation. He considered a means to end the young man's threat as his body began to heat up again. Rukawa felt annoyed when he raised his lips as if asking for a kiss.
Rukawa: Moron!
Sendoh: Hahaha!
While lying in bed, he reflected on Rukawa's endearing qualities. He's irritable, hot-headed, immature, and snarky, and his mouth never closes when he's angry, violent, or naughty. He couldn't believe all of this quality was inside a baby-scented boy like him. He was certain his feelings for the super rookie went beyond admiration.
Sendoh: Who wouldn't fall madly in love with you? I'll find a way to make you fall for me, grumpy baby. Hehehe!
The entire day had passed once again. Rukawa's routine of napping in all classes, practicing, punching with Sakuragi, throwing balls at other immature teammates, joining the fight with mature teammates, receiving Gori's punch, and hearing Coach Anzai's calm farewell was over. He was on his way to the apartment when he noticed a man dressed in a white shirt and with spiky hair. He noticed that he was busy playing with the children. He moved to the side to keep an eye on the spiky head without disturbing him.
Rukawa: Why is this spiky head here again?
He was glad to see Sendoh was serious about teaching the children. He thought he only knew how to be cute and flattering. So, what is it about him that has piqued his interest? Player 7. Top athletes are what capture his attention and make him spend his time, but this man irritates him because he is so competent at basketball.
Kids: Mister, he's watching us! Do you know him?
Sendoh: Who?
Sendoh turned to face him. When he spotted him, the spiky head's smile broadened, and he waved the kids farewell and gave them all a high five.
Rukawa: Why are you here?
Sendoh gave him an assorted-flavored corndog. He wonders why he would accept it, but his digestive system would never reject food.
Rukawa: Thanks.
Sendoh: Come with me tomorrow morning!
Rukawa: Where?
Sendoh: Let's go fishing!
Rukawa: I don't want to.
He looked at Sendoh's face, which turned gloomy after he refused.
Rukawa: Fine. What time?
Sendoh: Really? Umm, we'll head there first thing in the morning! We'll then go to Ouzumi's restaurant! He'll cook everything we catch! Is it all right? Promise! You'll be at ease in the seaport! You'll rest there. Then... HMP!
He covered Sendoh's mouth and preceded him in what he had to say.
Rukawa: In one condition.
Sendoh: Okay! What is it?
Rukawa: Tie your hair in pigtails.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Rukawa, sitting next to Sendoh on his couch and folding his arms, was looking at him, who didn't know what to wear from the set of clothes he bought for their planned hangout. He remembers how he first saw him, before to his admission to Shohoku High. Sendoh was at a practice game with his team and, for whatever reason, he was also present. He, whose skills mirrored those of a professional basketball player, caught his attention. His first attraction to this spiky head was undoubtedly his abilities, and he was eager to learn more about his playing technique. He was interested in getting to know him as a rival in the sport he loved.
Sendoh: Which is better? Is it blue or black?
Rukawa: Why are you complicating something that isn't a problem?
Sendoh: I want you to choose what I wear.
Rukawa: Does it matter what I choose?
Sendoh: Certainly! I want to appear dashing when we go out tomorrow.
Rukawa: Fathead! Even if you're not dressed, you're handsome.
After what he said, he hastily covered his mouth. He was admiring Sendoh's physicality for the first time. He rose up from the couch, uncomfortably looking away from the spiky head. He was surprised when the spiky head pulled his arms, preventing him from getting off the couch.
Sendoh: Hey! Where do you think you're going?
Rukawa: Let me go, idiot!
Sendoh: Say it again! Say it again!
Rukawa: What the heck are you doing?!
Sendoh: You just said, I'm handsome even if I'm not wearing anything.
Because of Sendoh's teasing, he blushed with embarrassment. His eyes widened when he saw the spiky head begin to remove his top. He yanked the end of the shirt, slapping him on the forehead at the same time. He thought his teasing was over. The spiky head tickled him until they both fell onto the sofa.
Rukawa: Stop it! What are you doing?!
Sendoh: wrestling, with love. EEEHHH!
Sendoh continued to tickle him, and he was unable to hold back his laughter. He noticed that the spiky head's grip on him had loosened for a few seconds. His stare caught his attention. He could feel the heat of his skin, the hot breath on his face, and his hand on his neck. They remained in this position until he became aware of their unusual situation. He jumped up from the sofa quickly to avoid an awkward moment.
Rukawa laughed to himself as he considered how far their rivalry had taken them. All of a sudden, he recalled their first match on the court. Finally, the big day arrived, and they squared off inside the court. He had appreciated his rival's talent while watching him, but playing against him in their match taught him that his talents were greater and more challenging.
Sendoh: May I borrow him, madam?
Mother: Okay.
All of the passengers' attention was focused on the young child, who was screaming and throwing tantrums inside the train seat. Rukawa observed the spiky head as he took the child from the mother, who is unable to control her temper tantrums. The kid was made to sit on his lap. The spiky head seized the tiny hand, put it on his head, and brushed his hair with it. The kid started to giggle as the spiked hair tickled his palm. Rukawa observed him from his side, glad to see this tender side of Sendoh. Knowing he was a pond full of children was something he admired about him.
Passengers: AAAWWW...
The spiky head's selfless act of aiding the needy woman impressed the passing travelers, who cheered him. As they exited the train, Rukawa saw some fallen hair on Sendoh's forehead and led him to the side.
Rukawa: Hold on a second. Don't move.
Rukawa drew an inch closer to his own face in front of the spiky head's face. He gently combed and returned some hair that had been sprayed to its original position. He concentrated carefully until he finished so that it would resemble what it had been before they left the flat.
While Rukawa was calmly adjusting his hair, Sendoh was on the edge of burning his face due to their nearness. He was unable to move any further. His eyes remain fixed on the pale face, examining the long eyelashes, flawless skin, and lighter-blue eyes until they begin to droop toward the bridge of the nose. It was a pretty lovely view. His heart beats loudly inside his chest until his eyes lead him down to the younger man's lips. His face warmed even more when he got a glimpse of Rukawa's smile.
Sendoh: Thanks.
Rukawa: Heh.
Sendoh walked more slowly and kept behind Rukawa. He immediately messed up his hair, but as soon as he noticed Rukawa checking on him, he stopped abruptly and dropped his hands. When he saw the grumpy man shift his focus to the walkway, he immediately messed up his hair once more, causing further strands to fall out.
Sendoh: I will always mess up my hair, so you will always fix it. EEEHHH!
Porting is extremely relaxing. The sun's heat does not harm the skin. The only sounds they can hear are the birds' cries and the lapping of the sea waves. Rukawa was lying down since the wind was so strong. Sendoh was relieved to see his date at ease by his side. He assumed that whether he caught any fish or not, he would always invite him to the port because his true desire was to capture the grumpy man's heart.
Rukawa: Do you come here often?
Sendoh: When the weather is as lovely as you are.
Rukawa: I'm rather handsome.
Sendoh: Hahaha!
Sendoh's touch caused Rukawa to abruptly sit. He was taken aback that he was applying lotion to him.
Rukawa: What the hell are you doing?!
Sendoh: I don't want the skin of my gorgeous baby to burn.
Rukawa's eyes narrowed as he remembered all the time that Sendoh had appeared before the nearby public court. He always assumed it was just a coincidence, but sometimes he wishes the spiky head had gone to his house with the intention of seeing him rather than just playing with him. After that basketball practice match had passed for a few days, the spiky head suddenly showed up in front of him in unexpected places, including the public court, the grocery store where he had just purchased cat food in cans, and even the front door to where they live. He took advantage of the opportunity to play one-on-one with him while watching him play, and he learned a lot about him. The only thing he wants to know, he reasoned, is how to play in his particular style. Without even realizing it, he had a burning urge to learn more about this spiky head—not just as a player but also as a person.
Rukawa: How many girlfriends do you have?
Sendoh: What?! I don't have a girlfriend! But I'm seeing someone. Do you want to meet him?
Rukawa: A man?
Sendoh: Yeah.
Rukawa: Is that an animal or a person?
Sendoh: Hey! He's a real person! He is a beautiful man!
Rukawa: You stupid fool, stop tricking me!
Sendoh: You already know him well, so I don't need to introduce him to you. He is seated next to me. Why are you still wondering who I'm dating?
Rukawa: Shut up!
Sendoh: Hm, I had three girlfriends, but not all at once.
Rukawa: But one after the other.
Sendoh: Hahaha! It's not serious. I dated my first ex-girlfriend for almost two months. The second and last, less than a month Hehehe!
Rukawa: He's not serious. How long will he flatter me? Huh?! You're dumb, Kaede! We're just pals!
Sendoh: On Saturday, I'll come see you. What is it that you want me to bring over? Food? A gift? or my delicious body? Hahaha!
Rukawa: Idiot! I'm going elsewhere that day, but you can come see me on Sunday.
Sendoh: Can I come with you?
Rukawa: No.
Sendoh: WHAAAT?! What are your plans that day?! Why don't you want me to go with you?! The eliminations have only recently begun! Every day, you go to school and practice! Is there still time for you to go somewhere?! Unbelievable!
Rukawa: Do you like being my mother? I can't tell you.
Sendoh: Why must it be kept hidden?! Come on! I want to go with you!
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Watch our game! Cheer for Daddy.
Rukawa: Gross.
Sendoh: Hahaha! Err... Rukawa, can I call you Kaede?
Rukawa: Alright, idiot.
Sendoh: Stop calling me an idiot.
Rukawa: What?
Sendoh: You always say that to others, especially Sakuragi. If that's what you call me, what makes me different from them? Do you understand?
Rukawa: Heh.
Sendoh: When you're upset, just call me Daddy.
Rukawa: Idiot.
Sendoh: Please...
Sendoh was still waiting for an answer when he found that Rukawa had already fallen asleep next to him. He can't believe this man seated next to him can fall asleep so effortlessly. His eye was instantly attracted to his bag. The devil in him wants to take it, but he hesitates out of concern that the grumpy man would become upset. However, his natural curiosity pushed him to finally open it. He looked over the bag and thought of checking the phone, but he held back. He was ready to zip up the bag when he saw the key was duplicated. He snatched one and hurriedly zipped the bag. He stared at it and couldn't help but giggle.
Sendoh: Daddy is coming home. Hahaha!
The restaurant at Ouzomi's overlooks the sea. The scent of salt water mingles with the breeze. What was more relaxing was the food prepared by Ouzomi's father for them.
Ouzomi: Are you friends with Rukawa?
Sendoh: Yes.
Ouzomi: Sendoh, don't be too obvious.
Sendoh: Huh?
Ouzomi: Don't show that you are easy to get.
Sendoh: Captain, I'm just really happy right now!
Ouzomi: You don't have to make excuses.
Sendoh: Captain, all best sellers, dine in.
Ouzomi: Are you sure?
Sendoh: My date has food cravings. Hehehe!
But Ouzomi couldn't help but look back to their table. Sendoh's eyes had a strange spark while they were eating. He also noticed how their ace player was taking care of everything Rukawa wanted to eat.
Rukawa: I can eat alone. I'm not a kid!
Sendoh: You took a big bite! What if you swallow a fishbone?
Rukawa: My neighbor has a cat.
Sendoh: It's good that you're safe. What would you like to drink?
Rukawa: I'll take care of it.
Sendoh: It's my treat.
Rukawa: Okay, next time I'll pay.
Sendoh: Does that mean we will date again?
Rukawa: Shut up!
Rukawa stole a glimpse at the man sitting next to him. Watching his smile grow even wider made him feel fulfilled, much like winning a game. They simply began as rivals, playing one-on-one matches, visiting their respective homes, and finally hanging out for real. For him, this is something new and unusual. Nobody will think he did this hangout thing, and the fact that he spent time hanging out with his rival will make the world appear even more crazy.
Sendoh: Kaede, do you have a destination in mind?
Kaede: I can't think of anything.
Sendoh: The next time we go out, I want to take you somewhere you'll have a good time.
Kaede: Do I look sad?
Sendoh: You only laugh when you are tickled. I want you to smile because you are really happy.
Rukawa: Are you really happy when you smile?
Sendoh was piercingly quiet, as if Rukawa's words had penetrated him. He was constantly thinking of new ways to make the rookie happy, not just with games, food, or tickles.
Sendoh: Okay, where do you want to go?
Rukawa: At home, so I can sleep.
Rukawa glanced at his spiky head, which seemed to be thinking deeply.
Rukawa: It is not a place. Happiness is a feeling.
Sendoh locked his gaze on him. This was the first time he heard Rukawa say something serious without being playful.
Sendoh: Do I make you happy?
Rukawa: Do you think I'll tag along if you don't?
Sendoh: Shit! I'm getting my happily ever after!
One of the strangest things happened, and Rukawa had no idea they were always together, meeting by coincidence so often. Spending time with him had become a habit for him, and he started looking forward to his appearance at the public court where they regularly met. Finally, he realizes that it's not just the sport he enjoys that makes him happy and rewarding. He is unsure about something within him—an unknown feeling he cannot define. But he is certain of one thing—Sendoh makes him happy.
Hikoichi wondered why their ace player had not received any food or gifts from the fans for several weeks. He also always arrives at practice early.
Ikegami: The number of people watching our practice is decreasing.
Ouzomi: That's better, so we can concentrate more. No one should see our strategy.
Hikoichi: Koshino, does Sendoh have a girlfriend?
Koshino: No! Why did you ask?
Hikoichi: I heard from my classmates that he doesn't accept any gifts, and he never allows them to kiss his cheek anymore! He doesn't even want to let anyone touch his hair!
Koshino: Let them be. It's even better that we can practice quietly. Where is Sendoh? Did you see him?
Ueksa: He's in the locker. He's talking to someone.
The Ryonan team went in to change clothes in the locker. They inadvertently overheard Sendoh's conversation with the person on the other end of the line.
Sendoh: Why don't you bring your cellphone to school?!
Rukawa: All my contacts are at school. Why should I bring it?
Sendoh: What about me?!
Rukawa: You always come here.
Sendoh: Don't you miss me?!
Team Ryonan smiled at what Sendoh was saying on the other line.
Sendoh: Open your camera.
Rukawa: I don't want to.
Sendoh: Don't be stubborn! Who is with you again? Go home!
Rukawa: Are you my mother?
Sendoh: If you don't open your camera, I won't bring your burger tomorrow.
Team Ryonan gathered on the bench and whispered to each other.
Coach Taoka: Koshino, does Sendoh have a girlfriend?
Koshino: He's not dating anyone.
Coach Taoka: Are you sure?
Koshino: I'm sure, coach.
They couldn't help but smile as Sendoh appeared to be a jealous boyfriend. Koshino asked to come out of the locker to give his friend and the person he was talking to some privacy.
Sendoh: I'm asking you! Whose house is that?!
Rukawa: My bedsheet is new! Idiot!
The entire team halted for a moment. They were taken aback when they heard Sendoh speaking in a male voice. Before they got to the door, they noticed Rukawa's face on the screen. They dashed out of the locker room, some covering their lips with their hands, others shutting their eyes, while Koshino smacked his forehead.
Rukawa went straight to the fridge when he got home. He had the feeling that his large intestine had devoured his small intestine. After their training, he went to Kainan. He was surprised to see so much food and a note from the spiky head.
"Eat well, Mommy. Love, Daddy."
Rukawa's heartbeat quickened at the message stuck on the refrigerator door, but he shook his head. He believed that the spiky head was only teasing him again.
Rukawa: I'm not the mommy! You're dumb, Akira! Wait a minute. How did he get in here?
He abruptly looked at his keys. Only now did he notice that one was missing.
Rukawa: You're dead, Akira!
He took out his cellphone and looked at the missed calls and messages from Sendoh. He considered calling him. He put down the phone since his hair was turning white while he waited for an answer. He went straight to the bathroom after cleaning the dishes to take a shower.
Rukawa: Is he already sleeping? Why doesn't he answer my call? Why didn't he tell me he was coming today? He's really, really stupid!
He rolled over to bury himself in his black comforter deeper between his bare legs and pressed his body deeper into the mattress, which was newer and packed with foam on the inside. Now, he wanted nothing more than to sleep again.
Rukawa: Heh.
He had been tossing and turning in his king-sized bed for quite some time. He turned over, tucked himself under the blanket, and dropped to the floor. He can't accept the reality that he was unable to go to sleep or get up to do a few tasks. He stood up and hopped onto the bed with all of his weight. He considered a strategy for falling asleep.
He relaxed by lying down on the bed once more. He found a comfortable position and carefully closed his eyes. He focuses on breathing. All of a sudden, he vividly recalled a wonderful place and a moment that are close to his heart. In his memories, the port was windy and calm, and just the sound of the waves could be heard. He even imagines his whole body's energy leaving, starting at his toes and working its way up. He was beginning to sleep as he thought about the port when, all of a sudden, he remembered the person he was with there.
Rukawa: Heh! I call you, but you don't pick up!
Having Sendoh in his memories made him frown in irritation. He refocused on his goal for the night. He pays attention to his body's demands. He closes his eyes and feels his entire body from head to toe, letting it relax. He let his neurological system take control on its own. His eyes are closed, but he is still conscious, and unexpectedly, someone enters his head. If this person was still breathing, why didn't he reply and return his call?
Rukawa: You moron, get out of my head!
His last remaining option is to meditate. When he began to count down from one, he had wrinkles on his forehead, and his upper lips were turned upward in an effort to focus just on the numbers.
Rukawa: 0XXX-XX-XXXX... Eh?! Damn it!
He absentmindedly mumbled the phone number of the person he had been waiting for to return his calls. His precious sleep is once again at risk. He had given up on sleeping. This situation is something he cannot tolerate. What is going to be the worst-case scenario? The following day, he will be worn out and irritable. So be it. It is the same since he acts that way every day. Although it is awful, it is what it is. He silenced every mental dialogue going on in his thoughts. His dilemma can only have one solution. On the nightstand, he retrieved his phone and dialed Sendoh once again. A few seconds later, the other line received an answer. His face lit up, and his outlook on life improved since he could finally speak to the person who had always come to mind.
Sendoh: Hello Kaede!
Rukawa: You moron! Don't talk to me!
Sendoh: Hey, don't be mad. I was simply a little busy earlier. Did you miss me?
Rukawa: Not at all.
Sendoh: Don't deny it! I can tell you have missed me by the number of calls and messages I have received from you.
Rukawa: Gross. Did you steal one of my keys?
Sendoh: Kiss?
Rukawa: My door keys!
Sendoh: Are you calling at this hour just to ask about your door key?
Rukawa: What else?
Sendoh: Hehehe! I'm sorry. Why are you staying up so late today? Usually at this hour, you are already snoring, and drollness is streaming down your cheeks. Hahaha!
Rukawa: Quit talking, asshole!
Sendoh: Um, I'm sorry for borrowing your key without informing you.
Rukawa: Stolen.
Sendoh: Okay. I apologize for stealing your key. You can ask me to do anything as a punishment for me, and I'll comply to make up for the crime that I committed.
Rukawa: Sing a lullaby.
Sendoh: No way!
Rukawa: No song, no forgiveness.
Sendoh: Thank God, I love you, so I'll sing.
Rukawa: What did you just say?!
Sendoh: I said, I love God, so I will sing.
Before humming the requested song from the grumpy man, Sendoh sipped some warm water, gargled, and cleared his throat.
Sendoh: Daddy handsome, Daddy handsome, where are you? Here I am, here I am, how do you do?
Rukawa: Yuck.
