Chapter 21: Memory Reprise

Just then, Old Deuteronomy walked up to the center of the stage. "What's going on?" Angelina asked. "I don't know." Seamus said. As Old Deuteronomy and Munkustrap reached for each other, Jemima appeared on some of the junk nearby. "Look. Jemima." Sly said, pointing at her. The heroes turned to see her as she started singing.

[Daylight]

Jemima: Daylight

See the dew on a sunflower

And a rose that is fading

Roses wither away

Like the sunflower

I yearn to turn my face to the dawn

I am waiting

For the day

As Jemima finished, the heroes put her song to thought. "Daylight? That means morning is approaching." Harry said. "Oh my God. I completely forgot about that." Hermione said. "Then this has to be the very moment." Tom said. Munkustrap turned to his fellow Jellicles as Old Deuteronomy sat down.

Munkustrap: Now, Old Deuteronomy, just before dawn

Through a silence you could cut with a knife

Announces the cat who can now be reborn

And come back to a different Jellicle life

The cats all gathered around Old Deuteronomy, eager to find out which one of them he will choose. "I wonder who Old Deuteronomy's going to choose." Cho said. "Probably Tugger." Intress said. "I'd say Jennyanydots." Sarah said. "No. Skimbleshanks." Neville said. "Uh, guys? We have a visitor." Harry said, noticing someone coming.

Everyone turned to see that Grizabella had returned. The cats were surprised to see her, though they still remained hostile. Tugger allowed her to stand before the Jellicles as they scattered and turned away. Victoria tried to greet her, but Jellylorum brought her away. "I didn't think we'd see Grizabella again." Kaz said. "Why did she come back?" Peyton asked. "It's her last chance." Harry said. "Last chance?" Ginny asked. "Her last chance to be accepted back into the tribe. Otherwise, she'll never be the same again." Harry explained. The heroes all sat nearby and watched Grizabella as Old Deuteronomy gestured her to sing.

[Memory]

Grizabella: Memory

Turn your face to the moonlight

Let your memory lead you

Open up enter in

If you find there the meaning of what happiness is

Then a new life will begin

Memory

All alone in the moonlight

I can smile at the old days

I was beautiful then

I remember the time I knew what happiness was

Let the memory live again

Burnt out ends of smokey days

The stale cold smell of morning

The streetlamp dies, another night is over

Another day is dawning

Daylight

I must wait for the sunrise

I must think of the new life

And I mustn't give in

When the dawn comes

Tonight will be a memory too

And a new day will begin

The cats and heroes all listened to Grizabella sing as she falls to the ground. Just then, Jemima stood up and started singing with her, being the first to understand her.

Jemima: Sunlight through the trees in summer

Endless masquerading

Grizabella heard Jemima sing and began to sing with her.

Both: Like a flower as the dawn is breaking

Grizabella: The memory is fading

Grizabella stood back up as she put all of her heart into the last of her song.

Touch me

It's so easy to leave me

All alone with the memory

Of my days in the sun

If you touch me

You'll understand what happiness is

Look –

A new day has begun

As she finished, Victoria stood up and started to walk towards her. She looked back at Old Deuteronomy, who wanted her to try. As Grizabella held her hand out behind her, Victoria gently placed her hand into it. Grizabella felt happy as Victoria nuzzled her hands. Harry stood up and walked towards them. He gently caressed Grizabella's hands. "Thank you." Grizabella whispered. Harry smiled before he started to sing again.

Harry: All that you wanted was to be wanted

Never to wander London streets, alone and haunted

Victoria: All your memories of pain, let them go

Old Deuteronomy: And you'll dance with these beautiful ghosts
