Chapter VII

Kuvira's Gambit.

After Kuvira harvested spirit vines from the swamp, the vines in Republic City reacted by abducting people. Korra saved everyone, but all is not well. Varrick and Bolin returned to warn everyone about Kuvira's spirit vine super weapon. Now Raiko wants to mount a defense against the Earth Empire. Meanwhile, Zen, Bolin, Opal, and Lin are on a mission to rescue Su Beifong and her family, who are being held captive by Kuvira.

Mountains Outside Zaofu.

In the woods Juicy lands, allowing Zen, Bolin, Opal, and Lin to dismount. "Alright, let's do this. Saving the Beifongs and saving our love because I vow to repair the rift that has grown between us and make us whole again!" Bolin said as he got down as Zen walked forward Before Lin spoke up.

"You, zip it now. I had enough of your babble on the ride in."

"Yes, ma'am."

Lin looks through a telescope at the missing domes that were around the city. "Kuvira tore down all the domes. Why would she do that?" Opal asked as Zen climbed a tree and rested near the top looking out as well.

"She's got a whole battalion of troops stationed there. There's no way we'll be able to spot anything useful from here. We'll have to go in for a closer look." Lin said before they heard a female voice behind them.

"Don't bother."

They turned to see Toph walking up as Zen dropped down in a crouch. "All the prisoners have been moved."

"Uh, hey, Chief." Lin nodded at her mother who turned to her.

"Hey, chief."

"Grandma Toph!" Opal hugged Toph who smiled.

"You were only up to my waist the last time we were together."

"Oh, man! Oh, I can't! This can't be happening!" Bolin started geeking out at seeing Toph.

"What? Do you have to pee or something?" She asked in annoyance as Bolin shook his head.

"No, well, now maybe. You're my hero! My name is Bolin. I'm dating your granddaughter, I mean, kind of. I may have screwed that up, but that's why I'm here, and you're my hero! Oh, I said that. Can I have a hug too?"

"What's up with him?" Toph asked as Lin looked at her.

"He's an actor. So you already checked the city for Su? How did you know she was captured?"

"I've been living in the swamp and keeping watch on Zaofu through the vines."

Bolin nodded at that. "Sure, okay, makes sense."

"By the time I got here, they were gone. I snooped around town and heard that they were taken away to some nearby prison camp."

"Where would that be?" Opal asked Bolin who looked down.

"There's a factory and reeducation facility not too far away."

"How do you know that?" Toph asked as Opal crossed her arms.

"Bolin used to work for Kuvira."

"How did you end up dating the kind of dipstick who works for Kuvira?"

"Used to!" Bolin corrected as Zen and Lin walked past.

"It's not his silver tongue, I can tell you that," Lin said as they all walked to Juicy.

"Please tell me this attitude isn't hereditary."

"Grandma, this is juicy." Opal introduced her bison to her grandmother.

Toph looked at the panting bison with snot coming out of his nose. "And I thought Appa was smelly. Why would you choose this leaky, nasty thing?"

"You don't choose your bison. He chooses you." Opal replied as Juicy nuzzled her. "And once he chooses you, you can't change. Believe me. I checked."

Republic City, City Hall.

"The borders are secure, and troops are guarding the rail lines into the city. So what have you two geniuses come up with to fend off Kuvira?"

Raiko asked Asami and Varrick as Asami held blueprints of a flying mech-suit shaped similarly to a hummingbird. Behind them stood Naruto, Korra, Mako, Wu, and Tenzin. "It's a flying mech-suit. Asami got the idea from watching dragonfly-hummingbirds. You can take off straight up, fly in any direction." Varrick explained as Raiko looked at him.

"Where does the spirit ray come out?"

"It doesn't have a spirit ray. I'm telling you what I told Kuvira: That technology should not be used."

"It's already being used by Kuvira! I need spirit vine weapons, and I need them now!"

"No." Korra said as Raiko stood. "It was Kuvira's harvesting of the vines in the swamp that caused the Republic City vines to go crazy and grab all those people."

"You're supposed to be the bridge between the two worlds. Why can't you harvest the vines?" He asked as she shook her head.

"I won't do that, but maybe since the spirits love Republic City so much, I can convince them to help us defend it somehow."

"OK, maybe while the weapon geniuses and the spirit bridge are getting ready for battle, we should be evacuating the ordinary citizens so that if Kuvira attacks, they won't be hurt," Wu spoke up as Raiko looked over.

"That's actually a good idea. Prince Wu, you work with the police to coordinate getting people out of the city. Now everyone gets to it. I want daily updates."

Kuvira's Camp.

In Kuvira's army camp, Baatar Jr. orders his team to test the power core of the spirit energy cannon, making sure everything will be for the real demonstration the following day in Kuvira's presence. With the energy capsule in place, Zhu Li initializes phase one but soon reports a problem with the condenser.

She attempts to power the machine down but fails to override the system. Baatar Jr. orders everyone to evacuate, as the cannon is about to explode. Despite Zhu Li's warnings that they too should leave, he reaches into the machine and pulls out a part of its circuitry, effectively powering it down. Baatar Jr. notices that the channeling ring is cracked and alerts the rest of the team that the broken part caused the cannon to overload.

Furious about the near-failure of their weapon, he yells that they will spend the remainder of their time taking apart the massive cannon to check everything.

Just outside the camp, Juicy flies carrying the others. "So how long has it been since you two have seen each other?" Bolin asked as Toph shrugged.

"Little while now. A couple of years."

"Try 20." Lin bit back as her mother scoffed.

"Ah, time flies when you get to be my age. I'm surprised you came to save Su. I thought you guys didn't get along."

"Su and I finally worked out our old grievances," Lin explained as Toph smiled.

"Good, glad we can put all that behind us."

"Right. 'We.'" Lin sighed as they landed behind several boulders.

"Okay, there's the factory."

The group reaches the factory and Toph metalbends an opening in the wall. After she, Opal, Bolin, and Lin enter, the opening is metal-bent shut just before a mecha tank on patrol passes by. Inside the factory, the group continues to hide behind boxes to maintain stealth. Zen meanwhile climbs up into the rafters and walks on them as Toph looks up. "What's his deal?"

"Part of Naruto's Task Force, said he's good for this kind of mission," Lin said as they saw the large cannon.

"Whoa, that's one big... Thing." Bolin said as Toph stamps her foot to get a seismic reading of the area.

"I think I know where they are. Feel that cavern a few stories down? It seems empty, but it's guarded by an awful lot of mech."

Lin did the same and felt the area. "Right. Why would you need soldiers guarding an empty cavern? They must have them in some kind of suspended prison, so they can't use their earthbending."

"Someone's coming. Hide!" Bolin said as the doors opened to reveal Kuvira, who was escorted by a pair of mecha tanks. They stand before the cannon. Baatar, Zhu Li, and some associates walk up behind them.

"I didn't expect you until tomorrow."

"I just wanted to check in to make sure everything was on track. It looks wonderful." Kuvira said to Baatar as Zen jumped over the rafter above them.

He got in between a V beam and laid against it as he watched the two talk. "We've had a few minor malfunctions, but we should be ready for the test tomorrow."

Kuvira turned to Zhu Li at that. You've been working on this the entire time, Zhu Li. What do you think the problem is?"

"It's a very complex machine. There are bound to be some bugs to work out."

"But you're doing everything you can to fix those, correct?"

"Of course, your eminence." She nodded as Toph spoke up to the others.

"She's lying."

"Tell the troops and factory workers to attend tomorrow's demonstration. I want them all to witness this incredible new weapon in action."

Later, the group is in the woods on the outskirts of town. "We should be thinking of a way to take out Kuvira while we have the chance," Opal said to the others as Bolin looked over

"Or at least destroy the Cannon. If she takes that to Republic City, it could obliterate everything."

"I didn't come to fight with Kuvira or destroy a Cannon. I'm here to save my family." Toph said as the others looked at her. "It will take everything we have just to get out alive."

"Kuvira wants every single one of her people to see the weapon test tomorrow, so the factory will be mostly empty then. That's our best chance to sneak in and free Su without being spotted." Bolin said as Opal looked over.

"Good thinking, Bolin."

"Thanks. I kind of have a headache now."

Republic City, Spirit Wilds.

Korra finds that her attempts to contact the spirits are met with little success; when she approaches them, they all vanish before her eyes. She looked to see one on a post. "Excuse me, spirit Can I talk to…" She trailed off as the spirit vanished. "And you're gone. Just like all the other spirits. They're abandoning the city."

Beifong Rescue Group Night.

"So let me ask you about metalbending. Su tried to teach me, but I couldn't get the hang of it."

Bolin asked Toph as they ate by a small stove on a platform at night. "I used to have an academy to train metalbending. Even blockheads like you can figure it out with the right instruction."

"Yeah, you're a real sensitive instructor." Lin sarcastically said from her spot.

"I did learn how to lavabend."

"Really? It's a very rare ability. Maybe you do have some talent." Toph said as Opal blinked.

"Really? Naruto can do it, and fly as well."

"This Naruto the same one who can bend all elements?" Toph asked as Bolin nodded.

"Yeah, turns out the two spirits that created everything came from a different world that Naruto's also from."

"Yeah, right."

"So here's something I've always been curious about. Who's Lin's dad?" Bolin asked Toph as Lin looked back with a glare.

"He was a guy named Kanto. Nice man, but it didn't really work out between us."

"And… OK."

"Lin, I can feel your enraged breathing from here. Just say what you have to say, and let's get it over with." Toph said as Lin looked at her.

"Just get it over with? Yeah, let's not linger on the fact that I grew up without a dad. No need to get all touchy-feely about it. Just one of those things, right?"

"Hey, I forgave you for all your garbage a long time ago, and Su and I worked things out. You're the only one who wants to hold on to this family drama nonsense for the rest of your life."

"Forgave me for what?" Lin asked, turning to face her mother. "And not knowing my dad is nonsense to you? It was pretty important to me. And until now, you would never even discuss it. You know, after Su and I patched things up, I thought, 'Maybe I should try to reach out to Mom.' But now that we're together again, I remember why we stopped talking. You make me furious, and you don't even know why. And when I tell you, you don't care. Once we save Su, you and I are finished."

Toph took a breath at that before speaking. "If that's your decision and it makes you happy, then fine."

In the morning, Kuvira and Baatar Jr. roll the cannon out of the factory. Opal, secretly keeping watch, tells the group via radio that the cannon is about to start and that Kuvira will test it by firing it at an empty town nearby. Toph, Lin, and Bolin earthbend a hole in the ground and infiltrate the prison where Suyin, Baatar, Huan, Wei, and Wing are kept inside a wooden cage suspended over a deep, empty pit by ropes and ties.

Toph creates a double doorway entrance she can quickly close to camouflage the escape tunnel and warns that the guards are on the other side of the door set in the far side of the pit. Suddenly, Zen drops down above the door via a platform he creates. He looks over and raises a hand to let them know that he's ready.

Toph walks to the side and she and Bolin both earthbend a rock column to propel Lin into the air, who lands on top of the wooden cage. It shakes from the impact and the prisoners all grunt from the motion. A guard opens the door and is pulled up by a tether before Zen knocks him out and creates a larger platform to put the guard down beside him.

Toph uses earthbending to create another opening from which Bolin can catch the prisoners. Cut to the inside of the cage and pan up to see Lin having cleaved an opening from the top. She then pulled Wei up and threw him at Bolin.

Meanwhile, Kuvira congratulates her crew, saying that with the cannon, the Earth Empire will be the strongest nation in the world. Baatar starts the weapon, and, again, its alert system starts to beep. He opens the engine and sees that a part, the distributor pin, is gone; he mutters, confused, that he placed the pin inside the night before.

Kuvira spins around and glares at Zhu Li, interrogating her. Zhu Li tells her she does not know anything about it, but Kuvira feels the distributor pin on Zhu Li; metalbending it out from within Zhu Li's uniform, Kuvira realizes she meant to betray her all along. Kuvira, infuriated by the lack of loyalty and double-crossing, berates Zhu Li, but Zhu Li determinedly replies that Kuvira is a monster.

Kuvira pushes Zhu Li down the steps and orders Baatar to take her to the targeted town and chain her down there, intending to destroy her with it.

Back at the prison, the younger Beifongs have been transferred over but Baatar worriedly clutches the side of the cage, crippled by his fear of heights. Suyin tries to calm him down, assuring him that Lin will not drop him and Bolin will catch him, but he insists on staying behind. Since that is not an option, Lin, apologizing, just grabs Baatar by the ankle with her metal cable and swings him across to Bolin.

While Suyin gives her mother a warm embrace, Bolin radios Opal that they have succeeded and are coming back up. Lin and Bolin earthbend the group out of the factory as Opal flies in to meet them. Opal notices her parents and hugs them excitedly, thanking Bolin for all of his help, and tells him that Zhu Li is trapped in the town being targeted by the weapon.

Bolin, determined to save Zhu Li, takes off while Opal follows on Juicy. Suyin and Lin decide to attempt to take down both Kuvira and the cannon with Wei and Wing joining the assault effort, while Toph refuses to go and remains behind with Baatar and Huan. Trying to make small talk, Baatar refers to Toph as "Mother", but she reminds him she told him to never call her that.

Spirit World.

Korra's standing at the Tree of Time looking at the spirits there. "Spirits, this is the Avatar. Please listen to me. Since I opened the portals, spirits, and humans have lived happily together in Republic City. It's all I could have hoped for. I know you felt the effects of Kuvira cutting down spirit vines. But now isn't the time for you to flee the city. It's time for you to help me save it from Kuvira, who was perverting spirit power to use as a weapon against other humans."

"We don't get involved with human wars."

She turned to a dragon-eel spirit who spoke. "Spirits worked with Unalaq."

"He was misusing Vaatu's power during harmonic convergence to force spirits to fight you. Is that what you want?"

Korra shook her head at that. "No, but as the Avatar, I'm hoping that you will come to my aid to save the new world we all share."

"What you want is exactly what Kuvira wants: To use spirits as a weapon in a human war. The answer is no." The spirit said before they all started disappearing as Korra ran to each.

"Wait! Please, listen. If spirits and humans are gonna live together, we have to work with each other."

"We're not spirits of this world."

Korra turned to see the other Bijū behind her and the tree. "We'll help." Son Goku said to her.

Kuvira's Camp.

As the cannon prepares to fire, Baatar Jr., looking through a spyglass, sees his little sister with Bolin in the targeted town. He shouts in desperation to stop the test, but the cannon fires anyway; a massive earthbending wall from Suyin shifts the cannon's balance, causing its aim to shift and miss the town. The beam instead impacts the mountain behind the town, completely boring through it and leaving a gaping, circular hole; Bolin and Opal, witnessing the beam's power up close, are horrified by the sight.

Kuvira looks for the source of the disruption and spots Suyin, Lin, Wei, and Wing. The Beifongs exchange blows with Kuvira's soldiers, but the battle reaches a stalemate with both sides hiding behind earth walls. Seeing an opening, Suyin goes to engage Kuvira atop the cannon, but her former protégé manages to stand her ground.

Suyin is knocked from the tank by Kuvira, but Wei and Wing help their mother retreat. However, the Beifongs are eventually surrounded by Kuvira's soldiers and mecha tanks. Before the group is captured, however, the earth beneath the soldiers and tanks shifts and knocks them all down. The Beifongs turn around and realize that Toph returned to save them. She is accompanied by Baatar, Huan, Juicy, Opal, Bolin, and Zhu Li.

"You give metalbenders a bad name!" Toph yelled pointing at Kuvira as the others got on the bison before she did and they left.

In the forest, Lin and Suyin thank Toph for coming to rescue them. Lin apologizes to her mother for her behavior the night before, and Toph acknowledges that, while she was not a great mother, her daughters turned out great regardless. She says that if Lin can find some way not to hate her, then that is enough.

They hug, reconciling their differences, but Bolin unintentionally ruins the moment by joining Lin and Toph's group hug, remarking how great it is to have a family. An irritated Toph scoffs and extricates herself from his embrace, and Lin shoves him away from her. Toph wishes the trio good luck, insulting Bolin by calling him a gum-flapper, while Opal asks Toph if she is coming back to Republic City with them.

Toph laughs and assures them that her fighting days are over, and that, at some point, you gotta leave it to the kids. Zhu Li thanks the group for rescuing her as well and asks Opal not to hold Bolin's working for Kuvira against him, saying that his heart was in the right place. Opal smirks and playfully says that Bolin worked his way "out of the polar bear doghouse".

She kisses him on the cheek as a sign of forgiveness, and Bolin excitedly pumps his fists up and down in triumph. The celebration is cut short, as Zhu Li then tells the group that they must return to Republic City to deliver a critical piece of information: Kuvira is planning to attack Republic City with her army in two weeks.

Bolin, Opal, and Lin rescued the Beifongs and Zhu Li from Kuvira. Now they're racing To Republic City to alert everyone about The Earth Empire's imminent attack. Meanwhile, Korra and Team Avatar have been preparing for just such an event. Prince Wu is leading an evacuation effort while Asami and Varrick are creating flying mecha-suits. But with Kuvira planning to strike in only two weeks, will they be ready in time?

Zaofu.

Kuvira stood in front of her army with the Earth Empire board behind her, the only empty being Republic City. "Today we stand on The precipice of history. For the past three years, We've fought side by side To unite the Earth Empire and we've proven that no one can stand in our way. Not even the Avatar. But our mission Is not yet complete. There is a grave injustice that must be corrected. As you all know, after the Hundred Year War, Avatar Aang, along with Fire Lord Zuko stole Earth Empire land and Formed the United Republic."

"This land belongs to the people Of the Earth Empire and it's time to take it back. Republic City will be ours!"

"All hail the Great Uniter!"

She turned to walk with Baatar. "Are you ready to show The world What a true superpower Looks like?"

"Yes. I'm honored to march into The city by your side. I love you, Kuvira."

"I never could've done this without your help. After we claim victory, We can finally get married And rule our empire together." She said before hugging him.

Republic City.

"How's the evacuation coming?"

Korra asked as they stood in the City Hall waiting room as Kurama and his siblings ran around in the back. "(Sigh) It's like babysitting." Naruto sighed before Wu spoke up.

"Could be better. At this point, we've evacuated almost… 18 families."

"Only 18? There are millions of people in this city!" She sighed as Wu shrugged.

"I said it could be better."

"The problem is it's a voluntary evacuation and there aren't many volunteers," Mako explained leaning forward in his seat. "They just don't feel like They're in any immediate danger."

"Guys! Good! You're all here."

They turned to see Bolin and the others walking in. "What's with you interrupting my important meetings all the time?"

"Su! What are you... you're okay!" Korra said walking to hug Suyin "I'm so sorry about Zaofu. How did you escape?"

"Zen, Opal, Beifong, and I rescued everyone but we had a run-in With Kuvira. We saw her super spirit weapon up close. Like, really close. Way too close." Bolin explained as Tenzin looked over.

"Is she going to use it against Republic City?"

"Yes. I found out she's going to attack in two weeks." Zhu Li said from her spot as Bolin pointed at her.

"Oh! And Zhu Li is on Our side now. Actually, she never really switched sides. And I'm just gonna let her explain the whole thing, Zhu Li?"

"I pretended to be loyal to Kuvira so I could sabotage her weapon. It didn't work, but I did overhear her plans to attack."

"I knew she wouldn't stop at Zaofu," Raiko said standing as Lin looked over.

"My guess is, she's coming by rail. It's the only way she can transport that weapon."

"Then we'll cut the rail lines," Naruto said walking up.

"I agree. But let's get as many citizens evacuated before we do. Put out the announcement. The evacuation is now mandatory." Raiko said as Mako nodded.

"We're on it."

"Let Zira know that as well Zen," Naruto said as Zen gave a two-finger salute and jumped out the open window.

"Don't worry, Mr. President. I won't let Kuvira take our city."

Over in a factory, Varrick was barking out orders after getting the news.

"Weld hotter! Tighten tighter! The president said we only have two weeks to get these hummingbirds Humming!"

"Varrick, good, you're here."

He turned to see Bolin walking in. "Can I talk to you for a minute?"

"What is it? I'm busy inspiring my workers.

"Well, I went to Zaofu. And saved Su and her family… And guess who else we found…" Bolin trailed off as Zhu Li walked in. "Ha!"

"Zhu Li."

"Now, isn't there something You wanted to say to her? Hmm?" Bolin asked as Zhu Li walked up.

"Please, let me go first. I know I said a lot of terrible things about you In front of Kuvira, but I need you to know, I didn't mean one word. When you were being taken away, I thought my only chance to save you was to join her. But every day I hoped for the chance to see you again And tell you the truth. Varrick, you mean the world To me, and I'm sorry if I hurt you In any way."

"Don't be so hard on yourself. Apology accepted! Now be a good assistant and man the assembly line!"

"No! I am not your assistant anymore! If you want me around, you need to start treating me Like an equal." She said to him before turning to leave.

In Republic City's communications room, Mako attempts to inform the city of the now-mandatory evacuation. However, his over-technical delivery sparks a panic, and the phone lines are overwhelmed by confused citizens' calls.

Prince Wu quickly takes Mako's place and gives a speech of his own, saying he understands the fear the people are feeling, referring to his former fear of using the bathroom alone; he tells them that they will lose if they succumb to fear, asserting that the people of Republic City are "winners", and instructs them to gather their family members and neighbors and evacuate calmly.

Upon finishing his speech, the citizens cease their calls; Lin and Mako are impressed by Wu's actions, with the former stating that Wu might be a good king after all.

Outside, Naruto's Task Force was instructing people on where to go as Naruto drove off via his motorcycle. He drove to the dock overlooking Air Temple Island before parking then flew over.

Lookout Night.

That night at a lookout, two soldiers see Kuvira's mecha tans and suits walking out of a fog. They tried to radio Republic City, only to stop at seeing something large walk behind the army.

It's a massive mech suit, as tall as a twenty-five-story building. It has the large cannon affixed to the right arm. The exterior of it is made of refined platinum.

It suddenly stopped, raised its right arm, held onto it with its left, and fired the energy destroying the building.

Morning.

Team Avatar on a bison was looking around the railing before Bolin spotted the army.

"Guys, I see something. Down there!"

They looked at the giant suit and walked around the mountain. "What the fuck is that?!" Naruto yelled out seeing the skyscraper suit.

"Kuvira. She's already crossed into United Republic territory." Mako said as Asami looked back.

"She's a week early."

"Did you know Kuvira was building that thing?" Mako asked his brother.

"Oh, did I forget To mention it? No! Of course, I didn't know!" He shouted before the suit stopped, turned towards them, and fired having Korra dodge the blast before leaving

Later, Air Temple Island.

"Korra, are you alright?"

Tenzin asked as the bison landed and Korra jumped off. "Why are you back so soon?"

"It's Kuvira. Our intel was wrong. She must've known Zhu Li had the information."

"What are you trying to say?"

"Kuvira's army is only a few hours away." She finished as Raiko looked stunned before Tenzin spoke.

"No, they can't be… We're not ready."

"And that spirit weapon of hers is attached to a giant Mecha-suit. It's over 25 stories tall."

"Get General Iroh on the line and tell him the attack is happening today. We need to lock down this city."

"Pema, find Wu and get the remaining citizens to safety immediately. We can't have innocent lives in jeopardy." Tenzin ordered before Bolin spoke.

"What should we do?"

"Let's go to my factory. Maybe we can get a few of those Hummingbird suits up and running."

"We're coming with you," Su said as they nodded.

As Raiko's army stands watching Kuvira's army position on the battlefield, the Colossus appears before them, shocking them all. Raiko radios Kuvira, ordering her to stand down, but Kuvira replies that Raiko is in no position to make orders, and is unaware of the power she possesses. To demonstrate, she uses her spirit cannon to destroy several warships in the bay before aiming the weapon at the United Forces infantry at the feet of the Colossus.

Varrick notes that that is the reason that he did not want to build it. As General Iroh requests President Raiko's permission to engage, Kuvira gives him three seconds to decide between ordering a full-scale attack, risking tremendous casualties on his army and city, or surrendering and saving the lives of hundreds of Iroh's men.

Raiko chooses to surrender the city to Kuvira before his three seconds have elapsed. In the meantime, airbenders rescue the survivors from the warships.

Kuvira orders Raiko to turn his army and the Avatar over to her, and also orders him to give her his location, meaning to settle the terms of surrender with Baatar Jr. Meanwhile, Korra, refusing to surrender herself, escapes back to the warehouse, desperate to find a way to stop Kuvira's takeover. Korra informs the team of Raiko's surrender and tells them stopping Kuvira's crusade has become their responsibility. Realizing the futility of trying to attack Kuvira's army and the Colossus head-on.

Asami suggests that they could cripple it instead, and asks Zhu Li if she knows any vital intel on the suit. Zhu Li, however, replies that she never knew Kuvira was building it in the first place. Korra realizes that Baatar Jr. is the one responsible for creating the giant mecha suit; she promptly resolves to capture him unnoticed.

She recruits Tenzin, Bumi, Jinora, and Kai to assist her, not telling Raiko of their plans.

While Baatar Jr. is taking an airship as the Earth Empire delegation to meet Raiko at the Air Temple, following high above it from a flying bison, the airbenders use their wingsuits to follow Korra on her airbender staff down to a roof hatch. Korra metalbends off the lock and she and the brothers slip inside, leaping down the long shaft as Jinora and Kai stay outside as lookouts.

Quickly sneaking through the corridors, Korra spots Baatar Jr. entering an office secured by a key code and she metalbends the doors from automatically closing. He hears this, but Bumi and Tenzin rush in and take down Baatar Jr. before he can make too much noise; bound and gagged, Bumi secures him in a sack, which is airbent back up through the roof hatch to be caught by the teens.

The brothers grasp the sack between them and the team glides away to a Future Industries factory, completely unnoticed by the airship's crew. Once there, Korra removes the bandana from the enraged Baatar, Jr., who taunts them for making a mistake and tells them that when Kuvira learns that they have captured him, Team Avatar is finished.

"OK." Naruto pulled the back of the chair to a window and kicked it open.

He puts Baatar on the edge and tilts him back while having metal lines wrap around the front legs. "Tell us."

"You don't have the-!" Baatar stopped as Naruto pushed him out.

He hummed for several seconds before pulling on the tethers and putting his feet on the window ledge and pulled him back up. "Now?"

"Never-!" Naruto unwrapped the lines and let Baatar fall before Kurama in his larger form grabbed him halfway down.

He brought Baatar back up to the window and started squeezing, breaking the chair. "Now why don't you surrender? My friend here is actually bloodthirsty."

"O-OK."

Later, Korra held a radio receiver up to Baatar's ear. "Kuvira, it's Baatar. I've been captured. My airship was ambushed and I was taken by force. Korra refuses to release me unless we back down and leave the city."

"Are you injured?"

"I'm fine."

"Is the Avatar there with you now?"

"Yes. Everyone is here." Baatar said over the radio. "Listen to me. If you try to take Republic City, Naruto will kill me. Forget the United Republic. We have our empire. We have each other. Let's go back home and get married. The only thing that matters is that we're together for the rest of our lives."

"You're right, this city isn't worth sacrificing our life together. I love you, Baatar."

Several minutes went by before Naruto saw the giant aim at them. "Shit, she's firing! Everyone out! Now!"

The beam shot at the building as they ran and blew it up

BOOM!

Lin saw the explosion from the other building and left to check for anyone.

To Be Continued.
