Chapter 17
It was a bright sunny day, perfect day for an outdoor activity, although admittedly, none of the Party would have come here if it wasn't for the fact they wanted to support the one member of the group who was supposed to be here. They were down-town, in the Financial District, attending Mayor Osborn's campaign rally as it was time for the new election campaign. As a result, the Bugle reporters and photographers were out in force, along with reporters and photographers from other papers. Mike smiled lightly as he saw the others present in the crowd, approaching him as they worked through said crowd, Nancy glanced over from where she stood next to him and grinned.
"Good, they all made it, maybe they'll calm you down, you've been practically bouncing in place the whole time." She commented.
Mike rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, okay Nancy, I get it. Anyway I wouldn't be the only one."
He looked pointedly to Nancy's other side, to Jonathan who simply rolled his eyes, but still smiled, most especially as Will reached them first.
"Hey." Will greeted them cheerfully.
"Hi Will." Nancy returned the greeting, kind and friendly.
Jonathan grinned as he stepped up. "Well hello, little brother, how have you been?"
Will laughed. "Jonathan, really, little brother?"
Jonathan laughed too and the brothers hugged while Mike and Nancy smiled as they watched, Nancy even took a photo, winking at them.
They were then joined by Lucas and Max next, both holding hands and offering them smiles and warm greetings, finally Dustin arrived and they got to chatting happily.
"So...You guys really got roped into this...craziness." Max asked. "I mean, we know no matter how we feel about him, his opponent stands no chance and Osborn will get re-elected."
Lucas sighed. "I know Max, but hey, it's...policy, right?"
Dustin shrugged. "Don't think that's exactly the right word, but...yeah. He's basically holding this as an ego trip."
"So why did you guys come here then, if you don't like this sort of thing?" Mike queried.
Will turned to him, smiling. "We came for you, you and Nancy. You guys have to be here so...we figured we'd show up so you didn't have to suffer it alone."
Jonathan nodded in agreement, for that was the reason he had come along too. Mike and Nancy shared a look, it was at moments like this that they really appreciated their friends.
"Well, thanks you guys." Mike said with a soft smile.
Nancy smiled too and then noticed. "Oh, it's starting, get ready Mike."
Mike nodded and the others hung back while the siblings readied their cameras and began taking their shots as Mayor Osborn now stood at the podium atop the stairs outside city hall.
"Thank you, thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for coming…" He announced.
He began his speech but none of the Party really paid any attention to it, it was the same usual bullshit and they didn't bother with it.
That was how they noticed, before anyone else, a collection of vans moving and closing in at high speed, then came the screeching and then, the explosion. Dustin groaned, his ears ringing as he got slowly to his feet and looked around, it was like a warzone, there were screams, gunfire and and people running, people dead. He could only stare in horror until he heard coughing nearby and turned around, he then saw her, a dark haired girl in glasses, walking through the carnage, looking around desperately.
"Hey, are you-Look out!" He began before shouting in horror.
For at that moment there was a rumble and part of the overhanging ruined building began to fall towards her. Without thinking he rushed forwards and dove at her, she looked up and gasped, just before Dustin managed to push her and himself out of the way. Slowly, painfully getting to their feet, Dustin coughed and looked her over, she looked okay.
"Are you alright?"
She nodded. "Y-yeah, I'm looking for, for my family, we got separated and…"
They flinched as they heard the nearby gunshots.
"We better get out of here, before they find us...I'm Dustin by the way, Dustin Henderson."
"Suzie Bingham." She introduced herself.
They couldn't understand it and neither could Lucas and Max, who were actually blocked off from the others by more rubble, but had managed to save a couple of kids from being crushed, they felt that all they could do just now was keep these kids safe. Meanwhile, Jonathan and Nancy were panicking, trying to find the missing Mike and Will, while staying out of sight of the crazed gunmen, masked with strange Chinese Opera masks and some exuding a strange white and black glow from their hands, eyes or even their heads.
Mike meanwhile groaned as he tried to clear the ringing in his ears, luckily he wasn't heard. For he was in position and taking pictures, miraculously his camera had survived unscathed, he was sore, definitely bruised but didn't feel any other injuries so he focused on the pictures. For there were two of those men in masks up ahead, one of whom was barking orders and clearly the leader, it was then a third approached and spoke up.
"Boss, we've got him, we've got Osborn."
"Good." The leader growled. "It is time then."
With that he removed the mask and Mike took the shot, only to freeze immediately afterwards as he saw the face of the man, before something completely unexpected happened and the man's appearance changed right in front of his eyes, into something even more horrifying.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
