Enid's side was aching badly, making her feel dizzy. The adrenaline she had felt seemed to fade away.
She approached the door and pushed it open, revealing darkness on the other side.
The door was just down this corridor; it was lit dimly by the window light.
"Where are you... Abby, Abby, Abby, Abby..." Enid muttered, stumbling to the other side from the pain.
The door was open ajar so Enid pushed it open, and it led her to an outside dining area that was covered in vines and grass that grown through the floor.
"They're out! The prisoners are out! Open fire!" a female Rattler commanded.
"They're armed! Fall back! Fucking run!" a male Rattler shouted.
"Shoot them!" a third Ratter commanded. Gunfire echoed in Enid's ears as she trudged down the stone steps and she heard cries for help, probably from the prisoners; Enid couldn't tell from the distance.
Enid jumped down a small ledge, but it made her side ache. "Oh, fuck... Fuck, this hurts..." she muttered, gritting her teeth, "Head to the beach..."
Enid crawled underneath a fallen tree and saw that the round building was on fire. But that mattered little right now.
She worked her way down to the beach. It was dark and foggy, making it hard to see.
Eventually, she came across many posts in the beach with people tied to them with their .
"Holy..." Enid gasped, seeing that these people were dead. They were decomposing while hanging. These people were sick and inhumane.
After a minute of searching, Enid found Abby strung up on one of the posts. Enid noticed that Abby's hair was cut shorter than her own, she looked weakened from malnutrition.
Enid stared up at Abby. "Help me... please..." Abby weakly said, head dropped down with her eyes closed.
Abby then opened her fatigued eyes and saw Enid standing below her, covered head to toe in caked blood. She could see that Ellie wasn't with her.
"It's you..." she said. Enid didn't say a word. She pulled her knife out from her back pocket.
She opened the blade and walked behind the post and she cut the rope to get Abby down.
The second she did, Abby dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Enid walked back around the post, keeping her eyes on Abby as she slowly stood back up.
Oh, how badly Enid wanted to cut Abby open right here, but something stopped her.
Enid had a pang of sympathy for Abby. Some of her humanity seemed to be coming out of her.
Abby didn't want to fight her. She looked too weak to fight. In all fairness, Enid felt too exhausted to fight to despite her efforts to get to Abby.
Abby stumbled over to another post and untied the kid that was with her. His hair had grown.
It reminded her of Joel and Ellie; It reminded her of how things used to be before all of this.
Before this moment, Enid wanted to find Abby, she wanted to kill her. She wanted to fucking obliterate her. Now, she felt a bit off in looking at how Abby checked on the kid.
Abby picked the weakened kid up and faced Enid. "There are boats this way," she told her.
Enid sighed and abstained her decision. She put her knife away and held her side again.
Abby stepped up on a small sandy ledge with Enid following behind her. Enid tried lifting herself on the ledge, but slipped on the sand. She groaned in pain and fell back a bit.
She climbed on it again and managed to make it up. Abby was ahead of her, nothing but a sillohouette in the oncoming fog.
They kept walking across the beach embankment and they went over a hill. Just as Abby said, there were two boats tied up to a post in the water.
The fog was so thick that you couldn't see the end of the ocean. It felt as though they were at the end of the earth.
Abby walks in the water then looks back at Enid, who slowly walked down the sandbank.
Enid walked in the warm water to one of the empty boat while Abby carried Lev to the adjacent boat.
Abby placed him in the boat gently. Enid watched for a second more before focusing on her own boat. She stands beside the boat and takes her backpack off, wincing in pain.
She pressed her hand against her wound and pulled her hand back, seeing blood on her palm.
When Enid looked at her bloody hand, she saw flashbacks of her father's battered body and Ellie getting choked and beaten.
Enid remembered why she came here to begin with. The empathy facade was gone; Enid's humanity wasn't present. She was going to kill Abby if it's the last thing she ever did.
She looked over her shoulder, feeling anger come over her. Enid turned around and walked back over to Abby. Abby was untying the boat so she could leave.
"You ain't leaving," Enid said, voice thickened from lack of water. Abby stopped untying for a second, hearing what Enid said.
"I'm not doing this..." was all she said, proceeding to untie the boat.
Enid wasn't having it though so she stormed over to Abby and grabbed Abby by the hair, and pulled her down in the water.
Abby landed on her hands and knees. Enid waited a second before kicking Abby hard in the ribs, making her fall over in the water.
"No. I'm not going to fight you," Abby groaned, shaking her head.
"Yes. You are," Enid replied, fast-walking over to Lev with her knife open. She held the knife against Lev's throat, holding it as if she would cut his throat.
Abby rose up to her knees, seeing what Enid was doing. Enid was actually provoking Abby into getting her to fight her.
"He's not apart of this," Abby told Enid. Enid glared at Abby hard, not moving her blade. "It was you that brought him into this," Enid hissed, breathing heavily.
Abby didn't want to see Lev getting killed by Enid's hands. So she had no choice but to comply with Enid's demands.
"Okay," Abby said, getting to her feet. Enid kept both eyes on every move Abby made. She moved away from the boat but didn't put her knife away.
Abby charged towards Enid and football tackled her in the water and she tried holding her head under the shallow water, but Enid fought to get loose.
Abby held Enid's wrist down to keep her from slashing at her. Enid managed to get both of her feet on Abby's abdomen and kicked her off and slashed her arm.
The malnourished woman jolted back from Enid slashing her arm.
"Fuck," she growled, getting to her feet. Enid held her bloody knife in front of her, ready for Abby to make a move.
When Abby threw a few punches, Enid slashed her knife relentlessly. She did manage to get a few cuts in.
The fight escalated to the point where Enid had Abby pinned down in the water. She was trying to drive her knife into her shoulder, but Abby had ahold of her wrist with both of her hands.
Enid was victorious, hearing Abby scream in agony. Abby managed to disarm Enid, grabbing her knife from her hands. She slashed back at Enid, cutting her right eye, the eye that had been cut when she was 7 years old.
Enid yelled out in pain and covered her eye. It bled heavily. When she opened it, she found that she could barely see out of it.
She was mostly blind in that eye. Abby threw the knife in the water and kicked Enid in her bad side, causing Enid to roll in the water.
First Abby makes her lose her father, then she almost Ellie, made her lose Jesse, now Abby made Enid lose her eye and her knife that her mother had given her.
Both women get back to their feet, stumbling from their wounds. They started to beat the hell out of each other.
Abby grabbed Enid by the hair and threw a hefty right hook to Enid's jaw, knocking her to the water.
Enid got the upper hand and tackled Abby again, straddling her and she tried holding her head underwater.
However, Abby grabbed Enid left hand and she bit down as hard as she could on two of her fingers. "AHHHHH!" Enid screamed and reeled back, squeezing her good eye shut. She punched Abby hard with her other fist, forcing Abby to release her bite.
But that entailed in Abby biting off those two fingers. Enid forced Abby's head underwater, who struggled to get some air. She grabbed for Enid's arms as the half-blind woman wasn't faltering.
Enid pressed her knee onto Abby's chest to further immobilize Abby as she flailed and struggled to catch her breath.
Enid was so close to drowning Abby; she could feel it. However, something had stopped her.
She saw a vision her father, Joel, sitting on his back porch, playing the guitar. She also saw a vision of her and Ellie, dancing and having their first kiss in that mall.
This made Enid realize that killing Abby wasn't going to fix a damn thing. She let Abby go with a pained grunt, falling back in the water.
Abby rose out of the water, coughing up water. She crawled backwards and managed to get to her feet.
Enid pushed herself back to where she was sitting with her knees pulled to her chest in the water. She was crying at this point. "Go... Just take him... Please get out of here..." Enid said through heavy sobs.
Abby walked passed her and got in the boat Lev was in and she left Enid there alone. Enid looked up and watched Abby disappear in the fog. Enid held her severed fingers and felt her cut eye throbbing. Her blood was dripping in the water.
She thought of Ellie, thinking of how much she really loved her. All of this was for nothing. She shouldn't have let her vengence get the better of her.
She couldn't do it. Her father and best friend saved her. She did the right thing by not killing Abby.
Now, she had to go home to Ellie.
