ACT 5
SCENE 1
EXT. RIVER - DAY
The next day, Sebastián finally arrived at the river. He saw his surroundings and peered at the large crack in the middle of the mountain. He looked at the footprints near the ground. They were like the shoes Alonso usually wore. Sebastián checked the cavern once more. Confidently and sternly, he walked through the cavern.
END OF ACT 5
ACT 6
SCENE 1
EXT. TOWN OF ENCANTO - SAME DAY
Mirabel was walking around town, hoping to bump into Alonso. As she searched, she eventually found Alonso walking down the pedestrian area.
MIRABEL
Alonso, there you are.
Startled, Alonso quickly put the pen and paper back in his bag and fixed himself up.
ALONSO
Mirabel, I did not see you.
MIRABEL
What were you writing?
ALONSO
Oh, nothing important. You look skittish. Is everything all right?
MIRABEL
Right, I wanted to apologize to you about what happened last night. I do not know why my grandmother ejected you out of the house like that. It was wrong for her to do so without reason. I hope you can forgive her.
ALONSO
Do not worry about it. It does not bother me.
MIRABEL
I hope you were able to find a place to rest.
ALONSO
I was able to make camp. It is no big deal.
MIRABEL
That is good. (paused) What exactly is a "camp?"
ALONSO
I put up a small tent to sleep inside. It is a portable shelter made of cloth.
MIRABEL
It sounds taxing.
ALONSO
It is normal. Whenever I travel with my fam - I mean - whenever I travel by myself, I must set one up. No one really wants me to sleep with them. They consider me "different" from them and make fun of me for it.
MIRABEL
I never knew traveling was that intense.
ALONSO
It can be rough, but I push through, believing my purpose in life was out there. But enough about me. I wish to learn more about you. For example, I noticed that your family had such a large house. I am curious where all the servants were to look after your lovely abode.
MIRABEL
Servants? We do not have those. Besides, Casita cleans the house for us. It is convenient.
ALONSO
I forgot the house had a sense of self.
As Alonso and Mirabel conversed, Mirabel spotted a couple looking up at their roof.
MIRABEL
Hola. Is everything all right?
WIFE
Hola, Mirabel. You might be able to help us.
HUSBAND
Our roof keeps leaking for reasons unknown. We tried everything, but nothing is working.
MIRABEL
That is okay. I can go grab my dad, and he can...
ALONSO
Do you mind if I tackle this operation?
MIRABEL
Do you have experience fixing rooves?
ALONSO
I know a thing or two about fixing objects. A new perspective is all you need. Do you mind if I borrow your ladder?
WIFE
Of course, right this way.
As Mirabel and Alonso aided the couple, Dolores and Camilo observed them from a distance.
DOLORES
I do not understand why we are the ones who need to keep an eye on Mirabel. I could hear their conversation from the edge of the house.
CAMILO
We both drew unlucky straws, so suck it in.
DOLORES
I still do not understand why Abuela fainted the way she did. She was in bed all day and this morning.
CAMILO
She did not even come down for breakfast today.
DOLORES
Is that boy really that bad of a person? If he is evil enough to make Abuela faint, we must get Mirabel away from him as soon as possible.
CAMILO
Yeah, Abuela just did that yesterday. I do not think that is going to work.
DOLORES
Do you have any better ideas?
As Camilo looked around to see if there was anything he could use. Dolores quickly readied herself.
MARIANO
Hola, mi amor.
DOLORES
Mariano, I did not see you there.
CAMILO
But I bet you heard his footsteps from a mile away.
DOLORES
Quiet, you!
MARIANO
Is everything all right? You looked stressed.
DOLORES
Nothing's wrong, amor. Everything is okay.
Unable to manage Mariano and Dolores's flirty talk, Camilo surveyed the town. He scanned the area to see if there was anything he could use to create a rift between Mirabel and Alonso. He spotted the village kids playing ball with each other. An idea popped into his head.
CAMILO
Hey, why don't you two walk around town for a bit? Dolores has been working hard lately. She needs a break.
DOLORES
Are you sure you can oversee this?
CAMILO
Of course. Relax at a cafe. Smell the flowers. Do whatever couples do in their time off. Leave everything to me.
DOLORES
Okay, but do not make Mirabel suspect we were behind it.
CAMILO
Please, to whom do you think you are talking? What could go wrong?
As Mariano and Dolores walked towards the commercial district of Encanto, Camilo headed towards the village kids playing ball.
CAMILO
Hey, guys.
PUMPED JUANCHO
Hey, look, it is Camilo.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
Hola, Camilo!
INNOCENT CECILIA
Are you here to play ball with us?
CAMILO
Sorry, not today. But I am in a pickle, and I was hoping you could help me.
INNOCENT CECILIA
Sure! Anything to help!
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
What do you need help with?
Camilo turned the kids over to Mirabel, who was footing a ladder, and Alonso, who was climbing the ladder with various odd tools.
CAMILO
You see those two troublemakers over there? Specifically, the one on the rooftop.
PUMPED JUANCHO
Do you mean Mirabel's boyfriend?
CAMILO
Woah, let us not get too ahead of ourselves here.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
What are you talking about? It is obvious she has a thing for him.
INNOCENT CECILIA
It is like true love.
CAMILO
Okay, clearly, all of you are a little loco. Besides, why would Mirabel like him? He is a bad guy.
INNOCENT CECILIA
But he is obviously fixing that family's house.
PUMPED JUANCHO
What is so wrong about that?
CAMILO
Yes, that is what it looks like, but appearances can be deceiving.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
What do you mean?
CAMILO
Come a little closer, and I will tell you how terrifying that person can be.
Eerie music with a heavy bass echoed throughout the two as Camilo beckoned the village kids to come closer as he prepared for his grand plan. The town theatrically darkened as Camilo prepared for his number.
CAMILO
HAVE YOUR PARENTS EVER TOLD YOU "GO TO BED AT NIGHT"
BECAUSE A MONSTER'S WAITING OUT THERE TO EAT YOU IN YOUR FRIGHT?
IF YOU HEAR AN EERIE WHISTLE FROM FAR AWAY
GO AND RUN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR OR THAT SOUND WILL STAY.
THERE ARE STORIES OF A MAN WITH A LARGE WIDE HAT
OR A GHOST THAT IS LOOKING FOR ITS KIDS AND ALL THAT.
BUT NONE OF THE STORIES CAN COMPARE TO THE ONE
THAT THE MAN ON THE ROOF WITH HIS TOOLS HAS DONE.
HE'S A BEAST WHO IS READY FOR THE SLAUGHTER.
HIDE YOUR SPOUSE, HIDE YOUR SONS, HIDE YOUR DAUGHTERS.
DON'T BE FOOLED IF HE CATCHES YOU BY SURPRISE.
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
HE'S THE ONE YOU SHOULD FEAR IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT
IF YOU THINK THAT HE'S NOT BAD, THEN HE'LL GIVE YOU A FRIGHT.
YOU'LL BE SCARED IF YOU ONLY JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES.
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
Camilo circled around the kids and transformed into various beings related to the lyrics of his song. While the village kids were paying attention to him, they were more skeptical than fearful.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
Come on, he cannot be that bad.
PUMPED JUANCHO
Yes, he just got here.
INNOCENT CECILIA
Yes, he is innocent.
CAMILO
Oh, is he now?
Playing into their curiosity, Camilo continued his number.
CAMILO (cont.)
THEY SAY HE TRAINS DOGS THAT EAT CHILDREN WHO LIED.
HE'S THE REASON ALL THE GHOSTS RUSH TO THE MOUNTAINS TO HIDE.
HE'LL DRINK THE VEMON OF SNAKES, THEN CRUSH THEM DOWN WITH A SPLAT.
YOU THINK THE CHUPACABRA'S BAD? HE IS WORSE THAT THAT!
HE MAKES VAMPIRES WISH THAT THEY STAYED HIDDEN AS BATS.
HE'S THE REASON ALL THE WITCHES TURN TO KITTY CATS.
HE'LL MAKE THE MUMMY RETURN, THEN SEND HIM BACK TO HIS TOMB.
HE MAKES EMPIRES FALL BECAUSE ALL ROADS LEAD TO DOOM!
HE'S A FIEND WHO WILL EAT ALL THINGS DELICIOUS.
HIDE YOUR TOYS, HIDE ALL THINGS THAT YOU KEEP PRECIOUS.
DON'T BE FOOLED IF HE CATCHES YOU BY SURPRISE.
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
BREAK HIS THINGS AND HE'LL LEAVE YOU WITH A DREADFUL CURSE.
THINK OF ALL THE THINGS YOU FEAR. HE IS THAT AND WORSE.
YOU'LL BE SCARED IF YOU ONLY JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES.
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
The children were slowly starting to give in to his word. One final push was needed to make them react as he expected.
INNOCENT CECILIA
IS HE AS MEAN AS THEY ALL SAY?
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
SHOULD WE RUN BACK HOME? SHOULD WE PRAY?
PUMPED JUANCHO
IS HE EVERYTHING WE'RE AFRAID OF
IF WE CHOOSE TO LET HIM STAY?
CAMILO
HE IS ALL OF THAT AND MORE
CLOSE YOUR WINDOWS; CLOSE YOUR DOORS.
HE'S THE MONSTER WHO IS WAITING
IN THE DARK YOU CAN'T IGNORE.
PUMPED JUANCHO/LITTLE ALEJANDRA/INNOCENT CECILIA
IN THE DARK WE CAN'T IGNORE.
CAMILO
HE'S THE NIGHTMARE THAT WILL STAY WITH YOU FOREVER.
HIDE YOUR DREAMS, HIDE YOUR HOPES, HIDE YOUR TREASURE.
DON'T BE FOOLED IF HE CATCHES YOU BY SURPRISE.
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
HE'S THE DARKNESS THAT WILL HAUNT YOU RIGHT DOWN TO YOUR SOUL!
HE WILL CAPTURE YOU ALIVE FOR HIS FIENDISH GOAL!
YOU'LL BE SCARED IF YOU ONLY JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES.
PUMPED JUANCHO/LITTLE ALEJANDRA/INNOCENT CECILIA
IF WE ONLY JUST CLOSE OUR EYES.
CAMILO
HE'S A MONSTER IN DISGUISE.
(spoken) Run!
Completely frightened, the village kids ran toward Mirabel to warn her about the terrible news they had learned. Watching everything unfold, Camilo patted himself on the back.
CAMILO
And that is why they call me "The Drama King."
SCENE 2
EXT. TOWN OF MADRIGAL
The village kids screamed and ran toward Mirabel at a frantic pace. Mirabel noticed the commotion and was concerned.
MIRABEL
Woah, slow down, niños. What happened? What made you so scared?
INNOCENT CECILIA
Mirabel, it is terrible! You must get away from here!
MIRABEL
Is something dangerous coming this way? Do not worry, kids. I will protect you.
PUMPED JUANCHO
It is not coming! It is here!
MIRABEL
Here? Where?!
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
Up there!
Mirabel looked up to the roof that Alejandra pointed at.
MIRABEL
(yelling from below) Alonso, the kids say there is something dangerous up there. Be careful.
ALONSO
(yelling from above) Thank you for warning me. I will be on the lookout.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
No, you are doing it wrong. It is him.
MIRABEL
Who?
PUMPED JUANCHO
We are saying the guy on the roof is evil.
Confused, Mirabel turned to Alonso. Alonso was gluing a shingle and carefully placing it in the correct spot when his feet slipped, and he slightly lost his balance. When Alonso regained his composure, he realized the shingle was stuck in his hand. He tried various methods to shake it off his hand without success.
MIRABEL
Come on. Do you really think Alonso is that dangerous? If anything, he reminds me of my dad.
FAST ZOOM OUT - EXT. TOWN OF MADRIGAL - COMMERCIAL AREA
Dolores and Mariano were about to enjoy the coffee at a cafe when Dolores overheard what Mirabel said.
DOLORES
Ouch. Tío Agustín is not going to be happy when he hears that.
MARIANO
Is he going to be upset about us drinking coffee together like this? Should we have invited him?
DOLORES
Do not worry, sweetie. Everything is fine.
FAST ZOOM OUT - INT. CASA MADRIGAL - FOYER
While carrying a box of heavy goods, Agustín sneezed, dropping the box. The box fell on his foot, and he winced in pain. Julieta ran over to Agustín to hand him a pandebono.
JULIETA
Are you all right, mi amor?
AGUSTÍN
I am fine. It must be allergy season again.
Agustín ate the pandebono, and his foot healed.
AGUSTÍN
Thank you, darling.
The two shared a light kiss.
CUT - EXT. TOWN OF ENCANTO
INNOCENT CECILIA
It is true! You must believe us!
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
They say he eats children alive!
INNOCENT CECILIA
They say he will steal all our treasure and toys!
PUMPED JUANCHO
They say he is worse than the Chupacabra! The Chupacabra!
MIRABEL
Wow, that is intense. Who told you all of this, anyway?
INNOCENT CECILIA
Camilo did.
MIRABEL
(sigh) Of course, he would. Why am I not surprised? I will have a word with him.
ALONSO
(yelling from above) It is complete!
Alonso headed down the ladder with a sigh of relief.
MIRABEL
What was the issue?
ALONSO
The roofing paper needed replacing. The shingles were shifted around to cover the hole, but it did not fix the main issue. I had to cut the section out and reseal it with new paper. While I was at it, I took down the old shingles and replaced them with new ones. So, the house should be good to go now.
MIRABEL
Impressive. You did all of that quickly.
ALONSO
You learn things when you are on the road and living under a different roof all the time.
Alonso noticed the children were standing a couple of meters away with their feet quivering.
ALONSO
Are they all right?
MIRABEL
Well, they think you are a terrible monster that eats children.
ALONSO
What? Why would I even do that?
Before Alonso could finish his sentence, Mirabel nudged him on the shoulder and quickly winked at him. It took a while for Alonso to understand the subtle message.
ALONSO
Oh, yes. Yes! I am a terrifying person who eats children, specifically ticklish children!
Mirabel and Alonso ran over to the kids and aggressively tickled them. The kids rolled around on the floor, laughing and playfully screaming.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
N-No! P-Please! S-Stop!
PUMPED JUANCHO
W-We surrender!
INNOCENT CECILIA
I-It is too much!
After Alonso and Mirabel had their fill, they let the children go.
MIRABEL
That is what you kids get for making assumptions. If you let other people's comments sway you, you will never get a chance to use your eyes to create your own opinion. Now, let us try this again. What do you think about this horrible man?
PUMPED JUANCHO
He seems okay.
INNOCENT CECILIA
But there is not much that we know about him.
MIRABEL
And that is okay. The first step to learning about someone is to understand you do not know much about that person. Now, go out, have fun, and try to avoid trouble.
LITTLE ALEJANDRA
Thanks, Mirabel.
INNOCENT CECILIA
See you later.
PUMPED JUANCHO
We are sorry we called you a monster.
Mirabel and Alonso waved as the children continued with their day.
ALONSO
Come, there is something that I want to show you.
SCENE 3
EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF ENCANTO - AFTERNOON
Alonso guided Mirabel up a steep slope right outside of town.
MIRABEL
Where are we going?
ALONSO
It is a surprise. You will see.
Alonso led her to the top of a tree where they had an overhead view of the town.
MIRABEL
What a view! No matter how often I see this, it always amazes me.
ALONSO
Here is the best part.
Alonso pointed at the roof that he fixed previously. Mirabel noticed that the shingles Alonso put down created a familiar image.
MIRABEL
Is that Encanto?
ALONSO
Yes, it is.
MIRABEL
You managed to color-coordinate the shingles into a mural. That is incredible. You are very gifted, Alonso.
ALONSO
I wish my family would say that.
MIRABEL
Your family? I thought you were a solo traveler.
ALONSO
Yes, well, that's...
MIRABEL
Did you run away from your family? Are you really a traveler? Aren't your parents worried about you?
ALONSO
I am sure they would, but...
MIRABEL
But?
Alonso paused to figure out how to best approach the topic.
ALONSO
It is about time I told you everything. I lost my father when I was young. They say he died in combat and fought bravely in battle. Not long after, my mom got extremely sick. The doctors were not able to save her, and she passed away. I do not have any memories of either of them. My grandmother raised me by herself. She was the sweetest person I know and allowed me to be me. But she was getting old and did not have long to live. Before she left, she handed me this telescope.
Alonso showed Mirabel a golden telescope with various emblems and etches.
MIRABEL
It is beautiful.
ALONSO
It is. It is the only keepsake I have. It belonged to my grandfather, who died way before I was born. My grandmother never talked about it. She said his death was a painful memory, so I never asked further. When she passed on, my grandfather from my father's side took me in. Let us say our relationship is not that great.
MIRABEL
Did you have a falling out with him?
ALONSO
Not really. My grandfather expects excellence from me. I did everything to make him happy, but he was never satisfied. I wish he could be proud of me like my grandmother.
MIRABEL
You know, I used to be the same way. I never really had a good relationship with my family.
ALONSO
Are you kidding? I have seen your family. Sure, they are eccentric, but I can tell they love you.
MIRABEL
Yes, but it was not always like that. I was jealous of my cousins and sisters because they all had gifts while I had nothing. So, to compensate, I did everything I could to make them appreciate me for who I am. But every time I tried to, I ended up making things worse or making a complete fool out of myself. At my lowest point, I did not think I belonged at all. I felt ignored and cast aside even though I stood next to them. It made me feel unwanted.
ALONSO
I did not mean to bring up bad memories.
MIRABEL
It is okay. Well, it took a nasty argument and me spilling my feelings out to feel like I belonged in my family. It created a literal rift through the mountains, which I believe you came from.
ALONSO
You went past the cavern, too?
MIRABEL
I only made it up to the river. I have heard many stories about that river and its importance to my family. It is where my Abuelo died protecting my Abuela and where the miracle was born. Of course, it happened way before I was born, but it is still a special place to me.
Alonso crossed-referenced Mirabel's story with the legend his grandfather consistently told him throughout the years. His blood went cold when he connected the dots together.
MIRABEL
Is everything all right? You look like you have seen a ghost.
ALONSO
I-It is nothing. Let us start heading back down to town. It is starting to get late.
Alonso walked past Mirabel and extended a hand to her to help her down. As Mirabel reached out her hand, images of what may have happened at the river decades ago haunted his vision. The weight was too much to bear, and he retracted his hand.
MIRABEL
Alonso?
ALONSO
I am sorry. Let us keep heading down.
Concerned, Mirabel carefully and cautiously walked behind him. The two remained silent during their hike down. Meanwhile, Sebastián awkwardly and clumsily walked through the forest, trying to figure out how to navigate the woods. Just as he was about to explode in frustration, he caught of glimpse of two people walking. He stared at the people as hard as he could. He knew one of them was Alonso from the comically large backpack. The other looked like a woman he had never seen before. Using this as his opportunity, he quietly and stealthily followed them like a predator hunting his prey.
