Chapter Twenty-Five

Today was the day. The girls taking their placement exam for Hexside. Backstage in the auditorium, the girls were nervous.

"Oh man," said Danielle, peering out from behind the curtain. "Ooh, here's comes the stage fright."

"I-I'm not ready for this Eda," said Luz, a light spell in her hand. "Maybe we should go back."

"Nah, kid, you got this," said Eda, staring at the girls. "Just do what we practiced!"

"I agree," said Aster, staring at Danielle. "Those combos you did in practice were awesome. There's no way you'll fail."

"But what if... What if I mess something up? Or what if I do something wrong?" asked Luz, before gasping. "What if I die?"

"Die?" said Aster, tilting his head in confusion. "What's that?"

"Lesson for another day," said Danielle, not eager for that subject before taking calming breaths. "Calmati, calmati. Respira, respira."

"Hey. Calm down, calm down. I had to do the same thing when I was a witchling," said Eda, staring at the girls. "It's like a rite of passage. Granted, I was a little more skilled."

"Eda!" said the girls, staring at Eda.

"Right, right. Sorry, sorry," said Eda, getting the girls excited, well mostly Luz. "Now, get pumped."

"Pumped!" said Luz, getting excited.

"Get ready," said Eda, getting more excited.

"Ready!" said Luz, pulling her hood up.

"Now, go!" said Eda, shoving Luz towards the stage. "Your next after Luz."

"Whoopie," said Danielle, twirling her index fingers nervously.

"From the humblest of beginnings, a hero will rise. I have traveled from another realm and trained with a powerful witch to master dark and forbidden magic. I am..." said Luz, taking the hooded cloak off with a twist. "Luz Noceda!"

"Typical Luz," said Danielle, chuckling slightly with a smile.

"Right. The humans that want to be a witch," said Principal Bump, staring at Luz. "Against my better judgement, I've allowed the both of you to take this exam into Hexside. But can you even do magic with all your... human parts?"

"Oh, just watch when Danielle gets on stage," said Aster, hearing Principal Bump.

"I sure can. It's said that humans can't do magic," said Luz, taking paper and pencil out of her fanny pack. "But I discovered a lost technique that changes everything."

"Hmm?" hummed Principal Bump, watching Luz draw on the paper producing a light spell and a small pillar of ice. "Spells cast with paper? I've never heard of such a thing. But is it enough to pass the exam?"

"Luz should have taken some lessons from you," said Aster, staring at Danielle.

"We both have our own styles," said Danielle, looking at Luz's display before thinking. "Luz kept walking away when I wanted to help her with displaying the glyphs. She didn't even hear me."

"Uhh..." said Luz, getting nervous.

"Improvise," said Eda, whispering from behind the curtain.

"Um, I can do other things, what about... this?" asked Luz, flipping her eyelids inside out. "Bleep, bloop, bleep!"

"This is the reason why I can't handle medical shows," said Danielle, covering her mouth. "I get grossed out pretty easily with such things."

"Ow, ow! Eyelash! Eyelash!" said Luz, before slipping on the melted ice and trying to stand up again only to fall off stage and onto Principal Bump. "Sorry, sorry, sorry!"

"Luz…" thought Danielle, staring at Luz concerned.

"Whoops! Ah!" said Luz, activating an ice glyph that created a bigger pillar and lifted her up, making her eye level with Principal Bump. "I failed, didn't I?"

"Believe it or not, I've seen worse," said Principal Bump, dropping a pamphlet on Luz's head. "Welcome, Luz, to Hexside School of Magic and Demonics!"

"Hurray," said Luz, weakly before straightening up and sitting next to Principal Bump. "Go Danielle!"

"I'm up…" said Danielle, wringing her wrists. "Pray for me."

"Praying," said Aster, putting his paws up in prayer.

"Ciao, mi chiamo Danielle McIlreavy," said Danielle, nervously. "Posso fare glifi come Luz ma voglio mostrare qualcosa di diverso."

"Ooh, she's gone Italian," said Luz, watching Danielle.

Taking a deep breath, Danielle spins and conjures multi colored stars of light around her. Spinning in the opposite direction, Danielle conjures water that encases the multi colored stars before gripping the water in her hand and spinning it before cracking it like a whip.

"Wait…" said Aster, staring at Danielle's display. "Did she just create something similar to the Fleuve d'étoiles?"

Not done with her performance, Danielle twirls and rises the multi colored star water whip into a ring. Sending it high above her, Danielle produces a light spell and sends it to the middle of the ring before blasting a smaller light spell at it. The collision results in the bigger light spell to whirl hitting the ring and producing a watery rainbow veil to flow down around Danielle like an aurora.

"Wow," said Eda, staring at Danielle's performance. "She's really been practicing."

"That was amazing," said Aster, starry eyed.

'I think I should have taken some lessons from Danielle," said Luz, covering her eyes and slumping in her chair. "Why didn't I?"

"Come ho fatto?" asked Danielle, nervously rubbing her arm.

"I'd have to say that was quite a performance. And you can use magic much like us. How peculiar," said Principal Bump, rubbing his chin and staring at Danielle before handing her a pamphlet. "Welcome, Danielle, to Hexside School of Magic and Demonics!"

"Ho passato?" said Danielle, before going wide eyed and smiling. "Yoo-hoo, Ho passato!"

"Yes, you did," said Aster, twirling around Danielle. "I knew you could do it!"

"Sì, l'ho fatto, sì, l'ho fatto," said Danielle, grabbing Aster's paws and spinning him around before pulling him into a hug. "Oh, grazie mille Aster. Non sarei arrivato così lontano senza di te."

"Prego," said Aster, enjoying the hug and nuzzling Danielle's cheek.

"That's interesting," said Principal Bump, staring at Aster. "I've never seen a creature quite like this one."

"Oh… um…" said Danielle, slightly scratching her check. "Aster here is…"

"Aster been with her since a certain out of body experience," said Eda, jumping off the stage. "Made a contract of some sort with this spirit."

"I am not a…" shouted Aster, before pouting and laying on Danielle's shoulder.

"Don't worry," said Danielle, petting the top of Aster's head. "They'll find out eventually. Just how, that is."

"Fascinating," said Principal Bump, staring at Aster and Danielle. "This is going to be an interesting semester."

"Question Principal Bump," said Danielle, staring at Principal Bump. "Is it okay to modify the uniform somewhat?"

"Of course," replied Principal Bump, writing on his clipboard. "As long as it still shows you're from Hexside."

After having their uniforms given to them, Eda, the girls and Aster head back to the owl house. Both girls were nervous for their first day of school. Danielle was able to calm herself by altering her uniform some. The cowl now sported a white cord with white diamond shaped buttons holding it in place instead of being clasped in the front. The sleeves were shortened to fluttery cap sleeves and the pants were loosened and shortened to where they could be seen under the tunic which now had slits on its sides. Danielle had removed the belt entirely from the outfit. As for shoes, Danielle opted to wear her sneakers with her socks much like Luz. Danielle embroidered a tiny white titan head on the left side of her cowl with eight white stars around it.

The day had finally arrived. After having a hearty breakfast and Danielle waking up a little earlier to make packed lunches, they left the house. Eda and Luz flew on Eda's staff while Danielle conjured her wings and flew beside them, wanting to improve her flight and trying to get over her fear of heights.

"Mmm, we gotta go back," said Luz, pointing back towards the owl house. "This was a mistake! I'm gonna mess things up again and everyone will see, and…"

"Right, you gotta calm down," said Eda, staring at Luz. "What are you nervous about? You've been to school before."

"That's why I'm nervous!" said Luz, thinking about her old school. "At my human school, I didn't make a good first impression. This is a chance to be seen as something other than a screw-up."

"Hey, don't worry about what those dorks think," said Eda, staring at Luz. "If you want my advice, walk into class and punch the first kid you see. To establish dominance."

"Aw, I won't be doing that," said Luz, staring at Eda. "But thanks."

"Neither will I," said Danielle, flying nearby and giggling, feeling the hood shift around. "Aster, what are you doing in there?"

"King's not the only one now with a hoody buddy," said Aster, popping out of the hood. "I got two hoods to play around in."

"Yes, you do," said Danielle, before looking at her backpack. "Still can't believe me tapping the lantern design on my duffle bag changed it into a backpack."

"Last chance to back out, and earn a new Bad Girl Coven patch," said Eda, landing and showing a badge. "Quitting: It's like trying, but easier."

"Nah, I'll just earn it when I quit showering," said Luz, running off. "Bye!"

"Think again," shouted Danielle, running after Luz. "You're showering!"

"Hold up!" said Eda, taking off her hand and throwing it onto Luz's head. "Just try not to be too much of a goody Luz shoes or goody… your name is not easy to rhyme. You two got this."

"Thanks," said Danielle, grabbing Eda's hand. "Here's Thing."

"Thanks, Eda. In fact," said Luz, pulling out two sock puppets of her and Eda. "I have written a heartfelt sonnet to commemorate this occasion."

"Whoops! A gust of wind just got me," said Eda, flying away. "See you after school! Byeeee!"

"I don't blame her for flying away," thought Danielle, eyeing the sock puppets.

"You're gonna do great, kid," said Luz, playing with the Eda sock puppet. "Thanks, Puppet Eda."

"Hey, Luz! Danielle! Congrats on getting in," said Amity, seeing Luz and Danielle walk closer to the school. "And not being in the baby class."

"Thanks, Amity! Up top!" said Luz, raising her hand for a high five only for Amity's abomination to give it to her face. "Blegh. Wow, my first day at Hexside. A chance to discover my true magical potential. And maybe meet a hot yet vulnerable upperclassman."

"Mmm, yeah, not looking for love right now," said Danielle, before sensing King in Luz's backpack. "You got a stowaway in your backpack."

"Huh?" said Luz, staring at Danielle.

"Dream on!" said King, popping out of Luz's bag.

"King!" said Luz, staring at King.

"Boop!" said King, poking Luz's cheek before jumping out of the backpack.

"Why are you in my bag?" asked Luz, staring at King.

"You're a free ride to the second-best buffet in town! Nyah!" said King, hopping into a trash can and grabbing a half-eaten doughnut. "The trash cans here are filled with half-eaten gold!"

"Ew, King, gross," said Danielle, taking King out of the trash can and making him drop the half-eaten doughnut back in the trash can. "I know how to make doughnuts, just don't eat out of the trash."

"You can…" said King, starry eyed and squealing. "I'm still gonna pilfer some from here. I'm in the mood for some doughnuts."

"Ask, don't steal," said Danielle, staring at King.

"Okay, but if anyone asks, you don't know me," said Luz, walking away.

"Luz, wait up," said Danielle, walking after Luz. "King, please behave while you're here, okay."

"Just keep Aster away from me," said King, waving the girls off.

"I'm more interested in the school anyway," said Aster, wagging his tail. "I can play with King later."

"Luz!" said Willow and Gus, standing next to the main entrance. "Danielle! Wow, nice alterations."

"She'd make the Black Bulls proud!" said a Masculine Voice, within Danielle's mind.

"Hello, fellow Hexoleos!" said Luz, walking up to Willow and Gus.

"Ciao Willow," said Danielle, waving to Willow and Gus. "Ciao Gus."

"Hello, classmates!" said Willow, winking.

"You did it, Luz! Danielle!" said Gus, producing letters in the air reading Better Luck Next Time. "Sorry, I was, uh, covering all my bases."

"Huh?" thought Danielle, wondering what Gus meant.

"I can fix that," said Aster, floating over to the letters and changing it with his magic making the letters reading Congratulations you two! with stars. "Much better."

"That's sweet Aster," said Danielle, smiling.

"Her smiles are always so nice," thought Aster, staring at Danielle. "I want to keep seeing her smile."

"Aw, that's sweet," said Luz, seeing what Aster did.

"So, do you know who those witches are?" asked Willow, pointing at the nine banners hanging around Hexside. "Those are the heads of the main nine covens. Each one excelled at a magic school like Glandus, St. Epiderm, and, of course, Hexside. Are you prepared to enter these hallowed halls?"

"Yes, I am," replied Danielle, adjusting her backpack.

"Hmm, that's what I'm gonna figure out right now," said Luz, entering the school alongside Danielle and Aster. "See you on the other side, friends."

"See you later, Luz, Danielle," said Gus, producing more letters reading Goodbye Forever. "You know what? I'm uh, I'm a just get rid of these."

Walking down the halls, the girls and Aster head straight towards Principal Bump's office. Knocking on the door, Principal Bump ushers the girls in while watching a news program on a crystal ball.

"A terrible development at Glandus High School. Students and teachers were found unconscious and without magic," said the Male News Reporter, on the crystal ball. "The cause remains unknown."

"Oh no!" thought Aster, remembering what happened recently at the Emperor's Castle. "The Basilisks! I thought they were all caught."

"Ha! Take that, Glandus!" said Principal Bump, pointing at the crystal ball. "Looks like this year's grudgby match is going to be a forfeit."

"I hope everyone will be okay," said Danielle, looking at the footage.

"Hiya, Princy-B!" said Luz, pointing at Principal Bump. "Can I call you that?"

"Absolutely not. Now, today we'll be visited by the Emperor's Coven for a routine inspection," said Principal Bump, staring at the girls and Aster. "If we want to impress them, you'll need to join a coven track before they arrive."

"Actually, Principal Bump, I've made my own schedule," said Luz, unfurling a scroll. "First, Vet Care for Mythical Beasts, then Healing and Dealing, and then after lunch…"

"Studying multiple tracks at once?" said Principal Bump, laughing. "No one does that."

"Then we'll be the first," said Luz, linking arms with Danielle.

"But it looks like some really could compliment another," said Danielle, looking at the banners. "Like potions and plants that could make various medicines. Or beast keeping and healing, animals need healing too."

"While good points," said Principal Bump, staring at the girls. "According to the rules, a good witch needs to hocus-focus. You can only pick one of the nine tracks. And you do not want to embarrass me in front of the inspector."

"No, I don't," said Danielle, rubbing her arm nervously.

"But all the tracks are so cool!" said Luz, slightly whining. "Is there some sort of enchanted article of clothing that could sort this out for us?"

"Well, there used to be, but..." said Principal Bump, remembering a certain hat before shuddering.

"I'm afraid to ask," said Danielle, seeing Principal Bump shudder.

"I don't know if I can choose just one," said Luz, staring at the banners.

"Me either," said Danielle, staring at the banners. "As long as it's not abominations."

"Ah, right. That didn't go so well when you snuck in that day," said Principal Bump, staring at Danielle.

"No, it didn't," said Danielle, shuddering on the mere memory.

"Then I'll choose one for you," said Principal Bump, pointing at the banners. "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe! Ah, yes! The Potions track. You humans are filled with liquids, right?"

"Oh, I guess I have always liked pouring things into other things," said Luz, her leggings and sleeves changing to yellow.

"Shouldn't be that hard," said Danielle, her shorts and sleeves also changing to yellow including the cord on her cowl. "How different is it from cooking?"

"I expect you two to be on your best behavior. Based on the costly repairs from recent incidents, we could really use a donation from the Emperor's Coven. Now, off to class," said Principal Bump, floating the girls out of his office before hearing a child scream outside. "The Choosy Hat! It broke free."

"Cosa!" shouted Danielle, hearing Principal Bump outside his office.

Walking towards the potions classroom, the girls sit at a desk near the windows. Aster was on the lookout from Danielle's hood trying to sense any nearby basilisks.

"I should let Danielle know about the basilisks," thought Aster, thinking back to the H.A.S. meeting that day. "Her ophidiophobia will be worse if she saw it."

"Welcome to a new semester! Let's get stirring! Today we'll make... fog brews," said the Potion Teacher, grabbing a potion and throwing it on the floor. "Begin!"

"Okay… let's see," said Danielle, staring at the book and grabbing a vial filled with some liquid. "This should be the right one."

"Danielle, I need to tell you something," said Aster, jumping in front of her before seeing her magic flow into the spoon and changing the fog brew. "Uh…"

"What is it, Aster?" asked Danielle, before her fog brew exploded in front of her, coughing and fanning the fumes away. "Is that supposed to happen?"

"No," said the Potion Teacher, staring at Danielle. "Nor is it supposed to be white."

"Huh…" said Danielle, staring at the fog brew seeing it was white. "What did I do wrong?"

"You magic went into it," said Aster, looking at Danielle. "The moment you were stirring it, your magic seeped into the spoon and blended in with the brew."

"Does this mean it's no longer fog brew?" asked Danielle, staring at the brew before seeing smoke billowing towards her from Luz's cauldron. "Luz!"

"Ahem!" said the Potions Teacher, grabbing Luz's attention.

"Sorry!" said Luz, stirring her brew.

"Maybe we should take it with us and see what it does later," said Danielle, pouring the brew into bottles and putting them in her backpack. "Wouldn't want anyone to get hurt because of my blunder?"

After class was over, the girls and Aster head out into the hallway. Luz rotates her shoulder after stirring for so long.

"Ooh boy! Stirring is the pits. What else is on the schedule for today?" said Luz, looking at her list and seeing multiple potions classes. "Oh, man! I'm sorry, elbow!"

"I'm used to it," said Danielle, before Aster floated in front of her. "What is it, Aster?"

"Do you know what a basilisk is?" asked Aster, staring at Danielle.

"A mythological serpent that cause death to those who look into its eyes," replied Danielle, shuddering. "I do not want to meet one. Why?"

"Yes, it's a serpent but it doesn't do that in this realm. It drains the magic from witches and demons. And they're also shapeshifters, they could be anyone," said Aster, staring at Danielle. "What I saw on that crystal ball in Principal Bump's office is the result of a basilisk. I know from just seeing how those witches and demons looked."

"This is not good," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "We got to warn Principal Bump."

"Ahem," said Principal Bump, catching Danielle' attention, alerting her to seeing Luz with a crystal ball in hand.

"I think we got bigger problems than Luz holding a crystal ball," said Danielle, only to see Luz drop the crystal ball before bending down and grabbing it. "Got it."

"Oh my," said Principal Bump, seeing Danielle's hazel green eyes go white before passing out. "This can't be good."

"Danielle!" shouted Aster and Luz, checking on Danielle.

"Celine, can I borrow you for a moment?" asked Principal Bump, gesturing a student over. "Please take young Danielle to the nurse's office till she recovers."

"Okay," said Celine, hoisting Danielle onto her back.

Celine was a female biped demon in the oracle track. Has pale yellow skin with small ridges spread across, three claws on each hand, and horns in the shape of a crescent moon. Also has a singular, lavender eye on the right of her head. Her sleeves were long and covered her hands and had a yellow bow on her left horn.

"Wait up," said Aster, following after Celine.

"As for you," said Principal Bump, grabbing Luz's arm and dragging her to a specific room.

Unconscious, Danielle appears within a certain area of her mind. A white starscape was spread before her with some fog at her feet. Looking around, Danielle starts walking.

"Whoa, I know I like looking at the stars and such but I didn't think my mindscape would reflect it," said Danielle, before hearing a voice she recognized as the Young Lady.

"Deny no further… Deny no further," said the Young Lady, her voice echoing all over the place. "Deny no further… Deny no further…"

"Ow ow-ow," said Danielle, clutching her head. "Shut up… Shut up."

"Deny no further… Deny no further…" said the Young Lady, her voice grating on Danielle's nerves. "You are…"

"I'm me!" shouted Danielle, fading from her mindscape and waking up, her hand outstretched. "Huh…? Where am I?"

"You're in the nurse's office," replied Celine, sitting in a chair next to Danielle's bed. "Hi, I'm Celine."

"You're awake," said Aster, jumping off Danielle's chest and nuzzling against her cheek. "Thank goodness."

"What happened?" asked Danielle, sighing and petting Aster.

"It sometimes happens to ones that study in the oracle track," replied Celine, looking at Danielle. "You went into a trance or something similar to one."

"I think I was somewhere within my own mind," said Danielle, holding the side of her head.

"Sounds more like a mind dive," said Aster, hopping onto Danielle's lap. "Very different from a trance."

"I have to say, that is one interesting friend you have there," said Celine, staring at Aster. "He's not a spirit but something entirely different."

"Finally, someone figure it out that I'm not a spirit," said Aster, staring at Celine. "Thank you."

"Right," said Danielle, getting out of bed. "We need to warn Principal Bump."

"Warn?" said Celine, steadying Danielle when she was about to fall. "About what?"

"That news report from this morning," said Danielle, standing up. "Aster here confirmed it was a basilisk."

"A basilisk!" said Celine, backing up. "But they're extinct."

"Tell that to the basilisk," said Danielle, walking to the door before losing her footing and leaning against the doorframe. "I gotta warn Principal Bump."

Walking down the hallway at a fast pace, Danielle, Aster and Celine head towards the direction to Principal Bump's office. At one point, a scream was heard and they quickened their pace. Coming upon Luz, Willow and Gus in the hallway, Danielle approaches them.

"Guys, we got a problem," said Danielle, running over to Luz, Willow and Gus.

"What the heck is that?!" shouted Gus, pointing down a certain hall.

"That's no basilisk," said Celine, recognizing it from a book. "That's a greater basilisk."

Before them, down the hall was large serpent with a semi-humanoid upper body with pale yellow scales, green frog like eyes, and indigo hair pulled up in a bun. Was wearing a torn grey dress. Also has webbed ears and claws. Had a wedge at the end of her tail.

A teacher was running away from the greater basilisk before stopping and sending a beam of light at it. The greater basilisk just gobbles down the magic thrown at it and the teacher drops to the ground, drained of magic.

"S-s-s-serpe," said Danielle, trembling at the mere sight of the greater basilisk, the others screams drowned out.

"I knew this would happen," said Aster, seeing Danielle freeze up. "Danielle… Danielle…"

"More cute morsels!" said the Greater Basilisk, spotting the teens.

"We may be cute, but we're nobody's morsels!" said Willow, summoning a carnivorous plant.

"Time for a power-up!" said Gus, giving the plant buff arms with an illusion.

"Let's see how you handle a spirit," said Celine, a spirit curling around her.

"Don't! It'll just drain your magic," said Aster, only to see Willow, Celine and Gus fall to the ground magicless after the greater basilisk gobbled their magic.

"Eat this!" shouted Luz, activating the glyphs in her notepad and tossing it into the greater basilisk's mouth. "Danielle, help me with Willow and Gus. Danielle…"

"Aaah!" screamed Danielle, being grabbed by the greater basilisk's tail and feeling her magic being pulled when the greater basilisk tried draining it. "Fermare! Fermare! Fa male!"

"Danielle!" shouted Aster and Luz, Aster attacking the greater basilisk only to be swatted far away from them into some unknown area of the school.

"Aster!" shouted Luz, before staring back at the greater basilisk and Danielle.

"You have magic. Why isn't it coming out?" shouted the Greater Basilisk, before slithering away with Danielle in tow.

"Go," said Celine, slumping against a locker. "I'm be fine here."

"Danielle!" shouted Luz, grabbing a hold of Willow and Gus and running down the hall and kicking a door open. "Guys! I need your help! Aster!"

"Luz!" said Aster, floating over to Luz. "Where's Danielle?"

"Oh. You're back," said a Female Detention Student, glaring at Luz.

"I'm sorry for hurting your feelings, but please listen!" said Luz, before falling and dropping Willow. "Argh! Willow!"

"What happened to them?" said the Female Detention Student, gasping alongside two others.

"Something horrible is loose in the school," said Luz, opening a door to a different area of the school, showing the greater basilisk draining the magic of another student while still trying to get Danielle's magic.

"Fa male!" shouted Danielle, a flashing symbol appearing on her forehead. "Fa male!"

"Danielle!" shouted Aster, about to go through the door.

"Don't let it see us!" said the Female Detention Student, closing the door and upsetting Aster. "I think that's a greater basilisk. I heard about them in a class. My cousin at St. Epiderm said she saw one, but those things should be extinct."

"It must've attacked the other schools, and now it's come for us," said Luz, staring at the three before her. "We have to do something."

"But if Bump catches us mixing magic again," said a Male Detention Student, staring at Luz.

"He'd kick us outta school," said the Female Detention Student, staring at Luz.

"Hexoleos are out there gettin' hurt, and we're the only ones who can save them," said Luz, jumping down the first floor and staring at the three students. "We're troublemakers, right? So, let's go out there and make some trouble."

Meanwhile as Luz and the others planned, the greater basilisk went back to trying to drain Danielle of her magic. Danielle kept screaming, her magic feeling the pull. Crack marks near the symbol on her forehead were spreading and glowing white.

"Why won't it come out?" shouted the Greater Basilisk, putting more force on the drain.

"Aaaaah!" screamed Danielle, some of her magic leaking from the crack marks. "FA MALE!"

"There we go," said the Greater Basilisk, draining Danielle's magic. "This girl's magic… it's so pure… and so much. A grand buffet!"

"Fermati! Per favore fermati!" shouted Danielle, screaming. "Fa male!"

"Huh?" said the Greater Basilisk, seeing an activated ice glyph thrown underneath her producing an ice pillar that slammed her down the hall.

"From humblest of beginnings, a hero will rise. I've trained with a secret society to discover the power of mixing magic!" said Luz, jumping in front of the ice pillar. "I am…"

"Luz…" said Danielle, weakly and her voice hoarse before slumping in the greater basilisk's hold. "Correre..."

"Wah!" said Luz, the greater basilisk chasing after her down the hall. "Viney! Do the thing, do the thing!"

"Attagirl, Puddles!" said the Female Detention Student, riding on a young griffin with Aster and slamming the greater basilisk to the floor before grabbing hold of Danielle. "Jerbo, now!"

Viney was a young female witch a little older than Danielle. Has brown hair with four wefted bangs and a messy bun held together by a dark orange spiked hair tie, green eyes, and light skin. Wore the detention track uniform. Her cowl was ripped and held together by a large thumbtack while her shirt is ripped on the side and tied together. Wears a fishhook earring on right ear.

"On it!" said the Male Detention Student, conjuring some vines to open a door high above him, pulling it open.

"No, give back that child," shouted the Greater Basilisk, falling through the door.

"Not happening, you big bully," shouted Aster, before staring at Danielle and placing a paw on her cheek, seeing that Danielle was in pain and breathing heavy. "Danielle."

"Must find help," said Principal Bump, before seeing the greater basilisk fall into the auditorium through a door from the ceiling.

"Wooh!" shouted Luz, jumping into the greater basilisk before flipping off it and landing on stage. "It's all you, Barcus!"

"Where am I?" asked the Greater Basilisk, seeing a dog like Detention Student, place some potion on its hand and his eyes glowing. "What's he doing? What'd he say?"

"He's reading your palm, and your future looks bleak," replied Luz, Jerbo standing next to her while Viney and Aster watched over Danielle, and Puddles the young griffin cutting a rope with its beak that dropped sandbags onto the greater basilisk.

All of the magic the greater basilisk ate is released and returned to the proper witch. Everyone gasps as they get their magic back and wake up. Magic flies through the air as it returns to the other schools. In the auditorium, Viney lays Danielle against Puddles, who had laid down on the floor. Aster sees the cracks on Danielle's forehead close up, the symbol already faded away before being seen but stills sees Danielle in pain and breathing heavy.

"Danielle…" said Aster, placing a paw on her cheek. "Please, open your eyes."

"Mmm…huh…" said Danielle, weakly smiling and petting the side of Aster's face. "Aster… you're okay…"

"But you aren't," said Aster, climbing onto Danielle's shoulder and nuzzling into her hair and cheek. "I'm sorry I didn't mention the basilisk sooner. If I did, this wouldn't have happened."

"Va tutto bene... va tutto bene…" said Danielle, nuzzling into Aster's head. "Sono proprio qui."

"Aaw, that's sweet," said Viney, staring at Danielle and Aster. "But you need to rest."

"AH!" said Luz, hugging Viney. "You did it! You were amazing! You guys…"

"Are in so much trouble. Leaving your homeroom, mixing magic and…" said Principal Bump, approaching Luz, Viney, Jerbo and Barcus before pointing to the door in the ceiling above them. "Is that a secret hideout?"

"Yeah, it is. But let's think about this, Principal Bump," said Luz, walking forward and gesturing to Viney, Jerbo and Barcus. "Why would kids in the detention track need a secret hideout?"

"There's a detention track?" thought Danielle, staring between Luz and Principal Bump.

"I don't care to know the ins and outs of rascality," said Principal Bump, pulling out a rule book. "But if the Emperor's Coven can send an actual inspector this time…"

"Okay, you need coven money. But if you have to hurt your students to get it, what's the point?" asked Luz, gesturing to Vinery, Jerbo and Barcus. "They saved Hexside. They should be allowed to study what they wish."

"B-but…" said Principal Bump, hugging the rule book.

"Do the right thing, ya dingus," said Gus, from the door in the ceiling.

"Alright, I'm smart enough to know when I've made a mistake," said Principal Bump, staring at Viney, Jerbo and Barcus. "Which tracks would you like to be in?"

"Healing and Beast Keeping!" replied Viney, excited.

"Plants and Abomination!" replied Jerbo, while Barcus barked oracle and potions.

"Then so be it. But if any of you cause more property damage, I'm feeding you to the choosy hat," said Principal Bump, changing their uniforms to their preferred tracks before looking at the girls. "And you two?"

"Oh, I still can't choose," said Luz, looking to the side. "Maybe it's crazy but I wish I could study a little bit of everything."

"Same here," said Danielle, staring at Principal Bump. "Minus abomination, that is."

"What's going on? What is this? Whoa-ho! This is so cool," said Luz, seeing her uniform gain its new color, the right sleeve being two shades of green, her left sleeve being two shades of purple, her right pant leg being red and orchid, and her left pant leg being blue and cyan. "Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna study everything!"

"Awesome," said Danielle, seeing her uniform gain its new color as well, the left sleeve being yellow and cyan, her right sleeve green and purple, her left short leg being red and orange, and her right short leg being blue and brown. Even the cord had all eight colors added. "Yay… ooh!"

"Danielle, don't move," said Aster, staring at Danielle. "You need rest."

"You know, only one other student wanted to study every track," said Principal Bump, summoning a paint covered picture before magically getting rid of the paint showing a young Eda. "Unfortunately, she was never given the opportunity."

"I shoulda guessed," said Luz, chuckling.

"Doggie…" said Danielle, pulling Barcus into a hug before passing out. "Bath."

"Danielle!" shouted Luz, running over to Danielle's side while Barcus got out of Danielle's hold when hearing the word bath.

"She's running a very high fever," said Principal Bump, placing his hand on Danielle's forehead. "School is cancelled for the rest of the day. Get her straight back to the owl house."

"Yes sir," said Luz, about to pick Danielle up.

"Let me help," said Viney, hoisting Danielle onto Puddles. "It's the least I can do after what you've done for us."

"Thanks, Viney," said Luz, seeing Aster hop onto Puddles and laying next to Danielle.

"Unfortunately, Puddles can only carry two people max," said Viney, staring at Luz.

"Not a problem," said Eda, entering the auditorium alongside King, worried for Danielle. "Luz, you'll hitch a ride with me and King. Viney, right? Just follow us."

"Yes ma'am," said Viney, climbing onto Puddles and positioning Danielle better.

Leaving the school, Eda with Luz and King on her staff and Viney with Danielle and Aster on Puddles head straight to the owl house. Once there, just one look was enough for Hooty to open the door quickly. Carrying Danielle all the way up to her room, Eda places Danielle in her bed while removing her shoes and cowl. Aster curls up near her head and curls his tail around her forehead. As Danielle was passed out, within her mind she was floating unconsciously before the Young Lady, wincing in pain.

"Slow, it's going slow," said the Young Lady, seeing the small crack marks on Danielle's body. "She'll come to realize who she really is. We are one. You are me. You are Light. Do not deny any further who you are."

"No," said Danielle, muttering in her unconscious state. "I'm me, no one else. I'm not… I'm not…"

Somewhere far away from Hexside, after the greater basilisk was able to move, its body is found by coven guards and coven scouts. Emperor Belos sees the greater basilisk dead before him.

"What do you think happened to it?" asked a Coven Guard, poking it with their spear.

"Looks like it drained Light's magic," said Dark, leaning on Belos. "Such a shame but it got what it deserved. Mine and Light's magic are very volatile."

"Cremate the damn thing," said Emperor Belos, striking the greater basilisk's corpse. "Leave nothing behind."

"But Emperor Belos," said a Coven Guard, staring at Emperor Belos. "Such resources are rare. Like it scales, fangs, claws…"

"Are you questioning me?" said Emperor Belos, glaring at the Coven Guard before setting the greater basilisk's corpse on fire and walking away. "I'll be glad once I cleanse this perdition. With Light by my side."

Owl Pellet #6

(Set this afternoon)

After having checked on Danielle after Eda left to get some pizza in Bonesborough, Luz heads to her room. Rummaging though her bag, Luz takes out the packaged lunch Danielle made for her. Untying the cloth, Luz sees a lacquered wooden bento box with some utensils on top. Removing the utensils, Luz opens the bento to see that Danielle had styled her lunch Azura style.

"Azura lunch," said Luz, wiping a tear from her eye before eating her lunch. "She's too good for us."

Owl Pellet #7

(Set this evening)

"Danielle, what are you doing?" asked Luz, coming to check on Danielle.

"Eda gave me the go-ahead for some toys in my bag," replied Danielle, weakly, her voice still hoarse, some stars in hand while Aster laid on her shoulder. "I finally found you the matching comforter and pillows."

"You didn't have to do that," said Luz, staring at the four pillows and comforter.

"But I wanted to," said Danielle, grabbing a fox toy. "I swear, this kinda looks like vulpix."

"Actually, that's its regional variant. It's an alolan pokémon," said Luz, sitting next to Danielle. "Looks like you also got eevee, aurorus, frosmoth, and togepi. Almost a full team"

"I've never even heard of alolan pokémon," thought Danielle, staring at the vulpix plush. "Or regional variant."

"Pizzas here," shouted Eda, returning from Bonesborough with dinner.

"Think you can make it down?" asked Luz, looking at Danielle.

"I think I got it," replied Danielle, standing slowly only to lose her footing a little.

"I gotcha," said Luz, steadying Danielle.

"Me too," said Aster, placing his paws on Danielle's shoulders. "Let's go together. Slowly, that is."

"Grazie Aster," said Danielle, slowly walking with Aster and Luz. "Grazie Luz."
