Chapter 6
When Hana woke up her body was stiff, but she felt rested and ready for anything. As she was getting ready for the day, she noticed that her vision was clear and much sharper than before the fever. It was than that Hana's stomach made itself known, it was hungry and she needed to eat. And it never dawned on her to check what time it was because if she had, Hana would have stayed in her room to hide. Because the minute she entered the dining room everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at her. Hana was never a self conscious person but at that minute she wanted nothing more than to hide.
"What did I grow a second head or something?" Hana asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Hannah, have you looked in a mirror?" Riley asked taking a step towards the girl. Hana was about to reply when Patrick started taking pictures.
"I have to share your transformation, you damn half-blood…" Patrick said before Hana grabbed his shoulder and squeezed, making him grab the phone. Hana stepped on the phone crushing it.
"I don't think so Patrick O'Connor. With my awakening I am much stronger than I used to be." Hana said smiling softly at the older teen, making sure to grind the device up to a fine dust under her foot.
"And I thought Hana-Chan was strong before her awakening, but this is unbelievable." Suguro senpai said coming into the room with the rest of the Japanese team behind him. Hana looked up at her brother's students a smile on her face. She put her hands flat at her side and bowed to the older teens.
"Hello, my name is Hanako Okumura, formerly Hanako Sato. Please keep watching over me and my older brothers." Hana said in her native tongue, not moving out of her bow until someone put a hand on her shoulder.
"Which shrine are you from?" Miwa senpai asked watching as Suguro senpai lifted her upper body from her bow.
"Nogi-jinja shrine. I am a wolf maiden, and the daughter of the 19th head. It's also why Kiba is a Fenrir cub." Hana said smiling at the bald monk.
"While that explains why your battle cry is a wolf howl." Finn said putting a hand on her shoulder.
"It's to distract the demon while we are fighting. Also it's how I call Kiba out to the field during the heat of battle." Hana said as everyone moved to sit down at the table. Hana chose to sit down next to Rin who looked like he was having a relapse again. She grabbed his hand and started rubbing it in soothing circles, hitting the pressure point in a hope to help.
"Are you alright Rin?" Hana asked smiling at her older brother.
"I'm not going to lie to you, Bean…watching you go through everything…it's just reminds me what happened with the old man." Rin said pushing the food around on his plate. Hana sighed before picking up her chopsticks and took a bite of her rice, forcing herself to swallow. Hana was able to get five bites down before she had to bolt to the first floor wash room to throw up. When she came out Yukio was waiting by the door with a cup of peppermint, chamomile and lemongrass tea. She could tell by the smell.
"Thank you Flower…but next time don't push yourself. Do you have a few minutes to talk?" Yukio said before leading her to the common area. As they took a seat, Hana leaned her elbows on her knees, hands clasped in front of her face, breathing heavily as she tried to calm her stomach and nerves.
"Here, drink this…it will help Hana." Yukio said pushing the mug toward her. Hana sighed before picking the mug up, and holding it in her hands taking in the calming scent of the hot liquid.
"Don't worry Hana, Rin made it for you not me." Yukio said smiling softly at his little sister, she sighed before taking a sip of the tea. She felt the warmth spread through her body, along with the calming feeling that went with it. Since she was a little girl this tea has always been the only thing that calmed her down.
"Perfect." Hana said her tail wagging behind her, a pure snow white wolf tail, that matched Kiba's fur.
"I don't know how you and Rin stand it that sweet, than again dad was the same way." Yukio said as he watched Hana relax in her seat.
"Dad taught Rin how to make this tea…that didn't mean he liked it. Dad preferred sake over this tea any day." Hana said laughing for what felt like the first time in a while.
"That's true…do you feel up to trying to eat again?" Yukio said smiling at the pearls of laughter that rang out of his sister's mouth. Hana stood up her mug still clasped in her hands, before moving to rejoin everyone in the dining room. She retook her seat next to her brother, smiling the whole time she was trying to down play this morning events.
"Hana-Chan are you alright?" Suguro senpai asked leaning forward in his seat so he could look at her.
"Oh this is normal; the more stress I am under the more likely I am to get sick or just stop eating. I guess I'm just like my big brother in that aspect…" Hana said before taking a bite of her breakfast. She hadn't been trying to make everyone feel bad about how they treated Rin, but the looks she got from the twins, by that Hana means Riley and Ryan, told her that her big mouth had done it again. It was than that Rin started laughing, hand's clenching his sides.
"Hana, you hit the nail on the head. You are just like me…" Rin said in between his laughter, this soon spread to Yukio towards the head of the table. It had been a long time since Hana had heard Yukio laugh freely. But their laughter was short live when Rin bolted from his chair, towards the first floor bathroom. Both Hana and Yukio stood up to follow after their brother, but Ayato Sato beat them both out the doorway and down the hallway.
"Hana you need to eat, you to Yukio. Ayato can help your brother." Professor Sato said standing up from her seat. Right away Hana shared a look with her brother before moving to go comfort her brother, only for Finn to stop her with a stern look and a hand on her shoulder.
"Hannah our professor said to sit down and eat. I know you are worried but this isn't helping. What would Rin say if he saw you acting like this, sit back down Hanako Okumura." Finn said pointing at her chair, it took Hana five minutes to weigh her options. She sat back down in her seat but would not touch her food. Not because of the fact of the tomatoes in her salad but because Hana was worried about Rin.
"Hana- Chan you need to eat." Suguro senpai said, looking at her from his seat at the table. Right away Hana shook her head, while clenching her stomach as the worry she had for her big brother, started to get to much for her to handle. Right away Suguro senpai was out of his chair trying to see what was wrong.
"Hana-Chan what's the matter? I can't help if I don't know what is the matter…are you worried about Rin?" Suguro senpai asked bending down so he could look up at her, while wiping away the few tears that were slowly rolling down her cheeks. Hana couldn't help but nod her head before breaking down. Hana throw her self at Suguro senpai, crying non stop.
"I'm going to take Hana back up to her room." Suguro senpai said lifting her into his arms, clearly trying to provide her some comfort. He looked down at her plate, only to see that she had taken a few bites of rice and that was it.
"Bon, I'll have Rin send something up in a few minutes, but right now it would be best to get her out of here." Yukio said softly rubbing his little sister's back in soothing circles, knowing how much the worry and stress could affect Hana. It was than that Ayato Sato re entered the room with Rin. Right way Rin rushed to their side trying to see what was the matter.
"Bon what happened?" Rin asked, trying to figure out what was wrong with his little sister. Hana was still crying on Suguro senpai's shoulder trying her hardest not to upset her brother.
"Rin, let Bon handle this. Sit down and eat something, while we fill you in." Riley said standing up from his seat, his twin brother not that far behind him. That was before their aunt stood up, upset that breakfast had been turned into a crazy spectacle. But one look at the two half demons was enough to calm her anger, they didn't choose this life, this is what was given to them.
"Boys sit down. Suguro why don't you take Hannah up to her room, get her to rest. Rin have some tea while I explain everything to you…Ayato do you have the secret weapon ready?" Professor Sato said putting a hand on the crying girl's head, trying to offer her some comfort.
"Oh yes…I'll bring it up in a few minutes." The professor husband said. Just as Suguro senpai carried her up the stairs towards her room, when they got there Suguro senpai set her down on her bed, wiping away and tears that might be on her cheeks.
"You know that tears will do nothing but make your eyes hurt, Hanako. There are better ways to deal with your emotions and stress, and I don't mean by skipping meals or crying." Suguro senpai said kneeling in front of her, trying to get his point across to the young girl.
"Emotions are something I don't really understand fully. I was raised among men." Hana said wrapping her arms around her knees, after bringing them to her chest. And Hana was lying understanding emotions was something she had a hard time with. But this had nothing to do with her upbringing it had to do with the hurt and pain that she had to face as a child. That type of trauma was not something other people could truly understand if they had not lived it. Suguro senpai started laughing, he should have known that something like this would be brought up.
"Being raised by men have nothing todo with why you can't understand your emotions. You don't understand your emotions because you've been through a great deal of suffering." Suguro senpai said sitting comfortably on her bedroom floor. Hana was about to reject his statement when someone knocked on her door, right away Hana's mind went blank, as she grabbed onto her teddy bear and curled up in the corner of the divider and the wall of her bed. When Hana was a little girl after the death of her twin brother and grandfather, her grandmother would come into her room, with a thin leather belt every time she would get mad. Everything had always been Hana's fault, it was her fault that her mother, brother and grandfather were dead. It took Rin and Yukio close to half a year to get to open up to them.
"Suguro, Hanako I brought up my secret weapon. Oh what did she do to you?" Professor Sato's husband said coming into the room a tray in his hand, the man took one look at her before sitting on the edge on her bed a sad smile.
"You haven't figured it out yet little bear?" Mr. Sato said handing a bowl of chocolate pudding to Suguro senpai. She pecked her head up at Hana's grandfather's special nick name for her. No had called Hana little bear since she was before she was three years old.
"Figured out what?" Hana asked slightly uncurling from her corner. Hana couldn't put her finger on it but Mr. Sato reminded her of someone.
"Who I am, little bear. Think hard, who do I remind you of." Mr. Sato said reaching out to run his hand over her head, this was before Kiba jumped onto their teacher's husband.
"Uncle Kaito, why are you here? Is grandfather and mother with you?" Kiba said jumping all over his twin's bed. Luckily Suguro senpai had seen this coming and removed the tray that was across Mr. Sato's lap. It was than that Hana got a good look at what was on the tray, an omelette rice and a chocolate pudding with whipped cream and chocolate chips on top. Hana looked over at her twin brother, to see that he was licking Mr. Sato non stop, it was than that she noticed the scar running across his throat, it was the same scar that their both their mother and uncle received from their step mother after they showed up at the shrine. Hana know that her mother and uncle were the results of an affair their grandfather had after a fight with his wife. Later on he found out that the children conceived that night were the children of demons, a namanari. Right away his wife tried to kill them out of anger and desperation to keep the Vatican, on their good sides.
"You can't be our uncle Kaito because he died protecting our mother from grandmother. This makes no sense to me." Hana said clenching her forehead as it started hurt. She couldn't make heads or tails of the situation. Nothing made sense to her, and Kiba was not helping.
"No this is Uncle Kaito, Hana. He smells just like grandfather…if you can't figure something out trust your instincts. What is your nose telling you?" Kiba said turning on his twin sister. That started the whole conversation to be blown out of proportion. Both Suguro and Ayato had a good time watching the two fighting.
"Sensei are they always like this?" Suguro asked from his seat on the floor as the youngest set of twins kept fighting.
"You have no idea…than again me and their mother were worse by a long shot." Mr. Sato said leaning back again his niece's pillows. He could still remember his sister's horrible temper, getting the better of her, as far as he could see Kiba followed their mother in that aspect. The fighting twins would have kept up their battle if a howl hadn't rang out before a pair of hands grabbed onto the scruff of their necks.
"Hana don't get to mad at them." Mr. Sato said leaning forward so he could speak to his sister. But he already know what the outcome would be. Because Hana and Kiba had been fighting they would either be getting an earful from their mother or grandfather.
"Then why didn't you stop them Kaito, it's your job to teach my children right from wrong." A soothing voice said from behind Hana, but with the way the person was holding her, Hana could only try looking over her shoulder. The most she saw was a woman with curly brown hair and sharpe green eyes, that was before the woman gave her neck a squeeze, forcing her to face forward.
"Come on Hanae, you know as while as I do, that if I had made contact with Hanako than the Vatican would have started to dig up her past. They would know who her mother and father was. I kept in touch with her adoptive father, and told you everything I had heard." Mr. Sato said putting his hands behind his head, knowing how no matter what that would piss his sister off. Before either Hana or Kiba know it they were released from their mother's hold, so that she could chew out their uncle. Hana was no longer confused about who the man sitting of her bed was, as the spirit of her mother had confirmed what her brother had said.
"Man, mom is still scary…" Kiba said hiding behind Hana, who was sitting on her bed. Rubbing her stomach as it started to make itself known to her again.
"I literally would not know Kiba…Suguro senpai can I have that tray please?" Hana said looking over at the punk teenager. Suguro was watching the scene in front of him until Hana snapped him out of his thoughts, her stomach actually was being loader than the two fighting adults.
"Sure Hana-Chan. Take you time while eating, because we don't need you to get sick again." Suguro said handing the tray to the white haired girl, this seemed to draw the older woman's attention to her daughter.
"Hanako are you not feeling good?" The woman asked watching as her daughter started slowly eating her food, keeping the pudding from last.
"Not in the physical sense of the word mother; I suffer from stress and anxiety which leads to my stomach being tied in knots to the point that I can't keep food down. This time of year is pretty bad." Hana said taking a few bites of her omelette rice, before having to take a sip from the water bottle on her desk. Luckily by the time she put her hand over her mouth, Suguro senpai was pushing her trash can into her lap.
"Okumura did I tell you to eat slowly." Suguro senpai said rubbing his hand over his face. As the pressure in her abdomen got the better of her.
"Senpai it's got nothing to do with how fast Hana was eating, and more to do with extreme pain and pressure coming from her abdomen. The doctors were always confused as to why that was." Kiba said watching his sister curl up on her side hands griping her left side as she tried to control the contractions.
"What can we do to help her?" Suguro senpai asked looking over at the door, where Rin was standing. If anyone knew what would help it would be Rin and Yukio, as they had spent the most time with her.
"It's not that easy to explain but first off; stop trying to give her food. Second push more liquids like juice or tea. Third we just have to keep an eye on Hana in case she comes down with a fever." Rin said lifting my head off the mattress, so that he could sit down, next to someone he actually know. Hana was actually using Rin's lap as a pillow while her mother was rubbing her back trying to help, not knowing that was only making the situation worse. This was before Hana launched forward to grab the bucket on the floor next to her bed, to get sick again. Already Hana was getting tired of being like this, the only reason she hadn't blown up yet was because she just hadn't hit rock bottom. It was never a good thing when that happened, and if her mother's spirit didn't leave her alone soon, Hana would send her mother to heaven. Rin knowing his sister's short fuse was quick to save the woman.
"Um…ma'am I highly recommend that you leave Bean alone. Unless you wish to be purified." Rin said taking the woman's hand off Hana's back. In the almost ten years that Rin had known Hana he know no matter what if she was not feeling good, you don't rub her back as that will set her off quickly.
"And why should I listen to you…for all I know you could be here as a spy for the Vatican." Her mother said crossing her arms over her chest, not that Hana could see any of this because her head was currently buried in her twin's fur.
"Why would I Abe a spy for the Vatican when they want me dead. Look lady I don't know who the heck you are but no way in hell am I going to let you upset my baby sister. Yeah she might be turning 13 in a couple of weeks but she is my sister, and I know her better than anyone her expect for maybe Yukio." Rin said covering my ears with his hands trying to spare me any trouble. Not that it really worked because I could still make out what he was saying by the vibration of his voice in his chest.
"How dare you say you know my child better than her own mother…" Hana's mother said, it was than that Hana picked to stop the fight between her mother's spirit and her older brother. Hana was normally not a violent person to anyone other than Kiba, but this was getting out of hand.
"Stop it…how would my mother's spirit know me better than my half brother, when this is the first time I am seeing you. Rin has even said that he's been with me for almost ten years. You were with me what ten minutes before you died, an event your stepmother blamed on me. If you did know me, you would have known that I hate it when people rub my back, because it makes me over heat which starts this whole thing over again." Hana yelled at her mother, tired and worn out. But the shock look on her mother's face was enough to send Hana running to a safe place. Hana had always found tight dark spaces, where her grandmother couldn't reach her with the leather belt, a safe place to hide. And when the girls had been cleaning the second floor two days prior, Hana had stumbled across one such place. A small broom closet next to the second floor bath, because of the lack of use, no one could remember it. Which made it perfect for Hana to use. This was short lived as Yukio quickly found her by following the sound of her throwing up all over herself.
"Hanako what the matter?" Yukio asked from outside the closet door, knowing fully well that the only time Hana ran to a broom closet was when she A) felt like crap. Or B) was upset and needed to be away from others because she wasn't sure what might happen. Today like most days fell under the category of option B.
"Do you really have to be asking that question, Yukio?" Hana asked leaning her pounding head against the back of the closet door, Hana could hear the small chuckle from the other side of the door. Yukio was trying to hide that fact her hiding had just added more tension to the air.
"Okay, you're right I shouldn't be asking if you are okay…I should be asking which category this one fells under?" Yukio said listening the Hana's uneven breathing, he counted the space of time between the breaths trying to figure out her heart rate without actually seeing her. If he had to guess it was most likely on the high side, but the fact that he was trying to do his job as a doctor, he almost missed the double tap that told him which category she was in at the moment. When Hana's breathing had leveled out, Yukio knew that it was safe for him to open the closet door, but what he found was worse than when he had found their sister hurting herself at the end of her last year in elementary school. There luckily were no blood but it was clear that Hana had a high fever and that she was sick. Lifting the clearly I'll girl into his arms, Yukio rushed towards her room where their brother was waiting for them.
"Yukio, did you find…what happened?" Rin asked looking up from his spot at her desk, only to notice that Yukio was carrying Hana in his arms, something was clearly wrong.
"I need the first aid kit from our room Rin. Also grab my cellphone and then come pack a bag for Hana." Yukio said pulling the thin sweater which Hana was wearing over her tank top off before stripping her of the rest of her soiled clothing. It was than that one of the girls from the English team entered the room, she took one look at Hana before rushing to help. The girl started by pulling out a clean set of light weight clothing, before pulling the covers from under the unconscious girl towards the end of the bed.
"Yukio-kun I need you to take Hannah's temperature before I get her dressed." The girl, who he was just now remembering as Sophia Bond, said pulling the covers over the visible sick child. Before forcing him to sit in Hana's desk chair. It wasn't long before Rin rushed back into the room a giant bag under one arm along with the first aid kit Yukio kept in their room and his cell phone.
"Rin, I told you to pack a bag for Hana not us." Yukio said reaching out to take the first aid kit from his twin. With the thermometer in hand, Yukio went to work on taking Hana's temperature, which was 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 F). This was bad, Hana wasn't like Rin or their father, she could suffer from brain damage if they couldn't get her to cool down soon. That was when Rin hit him upside the head, bring Yukio out of his panic attack and back down to earth.
"Thanks Rin, is that her emergency bag. Sophia there are clothes in there you can change Hana into." Yukio said giving himself a few seconds to calm down. 'Panic leads to haste, and haste leads to waste.' As Hana would always remind him when it came to studying for exams. Yukio picked up his phone and called for emergency services, telling them that his little sister, who was staying up at the abandoned boys dorm was running a 41 C temperature and needed help right away. Yukio was able to answer all the questions that were asked all the while Sophia was getting Hana dressed in some comfortable clothes, Rin never leaving their sister's side tipping small amounts of water, as a way to help lower her fever. When the paramedics arrived they right away rushed to take Hana to the hospital, Rin and Yukio following right behind them. They both know that they were in for a long night. And for once Yukio was happy that Rin had brought the emergency bag.
