Severus Snape
June 1st, 1977
Severus was waiting outside the gates of the Malfoy Manor. After the battle of Hogsmeade, he had once again written to Lucius, writing about his decision to join the death eaters under the dark lord. Lucius had ignored the first letter, for Nott had in a letter told his father about Severus's defeat at the hands of James Potter. So, Lucius thought that Severus had made that decision in anger. But when he got another letter from Severus, Lucius understood that his friend hadn't made his choice lightly. He then invited Severus to his house.
An elf came to the gate and opened it. He said, "Master is waiting inside. Follow me." Severus followed the elf, who took him to Lucius's office. When they reached the office, the elf waited outside while Severus went inside. Lucius saw Severus enter and said, "Severus Snape. So, you have finally decided to join us then?" Severus said, "I have. I will follow the dark lord and do as he say." Lucius said, "What changed your mind?" Severus said, "I would rather not reveal my reasons. Suffice to say I believe in the dark lord's cause and am willing to follow him to achieve his cause." Lucius stared at him for a few minutes, as if waiting for Severus to reveal his reasons. Seeing Severus wasn't going to say anything more, he said, "Very well. Come then, we need to go to the dark lord for you to become a death eater."
He then took a small coin from his drawer. He held it in his hand and said, "Hold this coin Severus." Severus did as he was told and Lucius said Morsmordre, which activated the portkey. Where the portkey took them, Severus didn't know. But it looked like they were inside a house. Lucius said, "Follow me Severus." Lucius then took Severus through corridors and stairs to the top floor of the building. All the while, Severus was feeling something different about this place. It felt as if he was no longer in England. And he was right. However, he forced all these thoughts out of his brain as he saw Lucius stop in front of the room. Lucius waited for a few moments before opening the door. They went inside the room.
The room was huge, with several people inside. Sitting on the throne, was the dark lord himself. Around him were several members of the inner circle, telling him about the raids on other villages. Voldemort saw Lucius and signalled him to come forward. He said, "What news do you bring Lucius?" Lucius bowed and said, "My lord, the ministry is in turmoil. The undersecretary has told me that the auror force is low in numbers and is not trained enough. People are pressuring the ministry to do something. The minister apparently has been talking with Dumbledore for more Auror recruits." Voldemort said, "That's good news Lucius. And I see you have brought Severus Snape with you." Lucius said, "Yes, my lord. He has finally decided to join your noble cause." Voldemort looked at Severus. Severus soon felt immense pressure being applied to his occlumency shields. He tried to hold his shields but he couldn't hold them for even a few seconds. Voldemort broke his shields and looked through his memories.
When Voldemort saw his memories, he saw everything. His childhood, his time at Hogwarts, his rivalry with James and his love for the dark arts and potions. But when he saw that Snape had rejected joining the because of the mudblood Lily Evans, he casted Crucio on Snape. The pain Severus felt from the curse was something he had never felt before. Never before had he felt pain this tremendous before. When Voldemort stopped the curse, Severus fell on his knees from the pain. Voldemort bellowed, "You rejected my cause because of a mudblood!" Severus weakly said, "I have realized my folly my lord. I was foolish. I seek and beg you to forgive me for my foolishness." Voldemort said, "Tell me how things are at Hogwarts." Severus was still in pain when he said, "The attack has led to a lot of students refusing to come back next year. Potter, Black and their gang are grieving the death of their friends. Dumbledore is trying to make the castle wards better. The two new DADA professors have left as well and he is looking for another."
Voldemort said, "Lucius, find where those 2 professors are. They have been a huge thorn and need to be removed. If not for them our previous two attacks would have been even more devastating. Do this and you will be rewarded." Lucius bowed and left. Voldemort then looked at Severus and said, "You will have to prove yourself to me, Severus. You will have to prove that you believe in our cause and will do anything to achieve it. You have to prove that you will follow me and do whatever I deem necessary. Rodolphus, take Severus on today's raids. If he doesn't do what he is told, kill him." Rodolphus bowed and said, "As you wish my lord."
Severus eventually proved himself to the dark lord by successfully doing several raids on various towns and making several potions for the dark lord. But he fully proved himself and became a part of the inner circle when he told Voldemort about the prophecy. But to his horror, when Voldemort decided to attack the Potter's, he realized that Lily would die. He begged the dark lord to leave her alone. He said he wanted to make her regret what she did to him, to which Voldemort said that if she didn't interfere, he would leave her. But not trusting this, he ran to Dumbledore and told him what Voldemort had planned. He begged Dumbledore to save Lily. Dumbledore in return asked Severus to become his spy, which Severus reluctantly agreed to. And so, he became a double spy for Dumbledore, telling him about Voldemort's plan. He also started improving his occlumency. But instead of trying to strengthen his shields, he worked about another way. He instead began covering only some thoughts. Thoughts that he wanted Voldemort to see, he placed them on the front. And this worked perfectly, for Voldemort never found out about Severus being a double spy.
