Chapter 10
The next day was the first real day of school work the class had together. Kenichi found most of it to be more of a review, however there was still enough that was different to keep him interested. He especially liked Modern Hero Art History, and not because it was taught by Midnight, or Kayama-sensei as she was supposed to be called in class. The class actually discussed the intricacies of how heroic fashion effected the public and vice versa. There was a lot of discussion over the evolution of hero costumes that made it very interesting.
He'd looked foreword to modern literature, but that had died a painful death when he realized that every book they would be exploring was about heroes. He liked heroes as much as the next guy but it was a bit much. What happened to the classics? The new classics were all about heroes and their battles with villains at least a hundred years ago. Kind of interesting, but it would get old fast.
English was much easier since he remembered his past life as an American. He could read, write, and speak it fluently. So, that class was actually super annoying given Hizashi-sensei's, Present Mic's, theatrics. Math was math. 'Nuff said.
It wasn't until lunch time that the expected questions from yesterdays revelation happened. Kenichi had collected, and paid for, a massive lunch cooked by the pro hero Lunch Rush. He easily had enough food to feed a half dozen people. It looked even more ridiculous when he sat next to Momo and their two massive lunches combined into one huge pile of food. He'd barely gotten his first bite in before a fair number of class members sat next to him and Momo as well as across from them.
It looked like most of the class had chosen to sit at the table with himself and Momo. The exceptions being Bakugo, Todoroki, Mineta, Ojiro, Sato, and, surprisingly, Aoyama. He'd half expected the guy to be trying to dig up information on his Quirk. Then again, it seemed like Aoyama had been forced into being a spy so he might only be doing the minimal amount required of him. There was no telling and he planned to continue to keep an eye on the guy.
Mina was the first to speak up from the clearly curious collection of students, "Wow! You two eat a lot huh? Family trait?"
Momo blushed a little at having her eating habits pointed out but Kenichi just grinned, "Something like that. Both of our Quirks require a large intake of calories to function at their peak power."
That proved to be the perfect opening for Mina, as he'd intended. She quickly pounced on it and asked, "Speaking of Quirks, what, exactly, is yours? None of us missed your strange reaction to shaking Midori's hand."
Izuku blushed and stuttered over the nickname given to him by Mina. Kenichi sighed and nodded, "I believe I've explained this before, but for everyone's benefit I'll do so again to make sure everyone understands." Seeing everyone nod in agreement or focusing more on him, Kenichi began, "I call my Quirk Biokinesis. It gives me absolute control over every aspect of my body and genetic code. For example..."
He numbed the nerves in his left hand before he lifted it up and quickly transformed his fingers so that they were tipped with wicked looking talons, "I can do small things like this." The talons shifted away, "I can also control my muscle strength, bone density, visual acuity, and so on. All at a genetic level so any changes I make are permanent until I take them away. I can also completely shift my appearance to match anyone. Though it helps if I've touched them."
Everyone looked enthralled with his description so he moved on, "When I touch someone a minor aspect of my Quirk lets me fully understand their genetic code. So if I touch someone I can completely shift into them. It also gives me some basic information on an individual's Quirk." He made an offhand gesture to Midoriya, "In the case of Midoriya-sans Quirk, it was a rather unique and disturbing thing for me to experience. It completely threw me off so I said some things I shouldn't have and definitely didn't mean."
He definitely shouldn't have said anything but he meant every word, "Now, this doesn't mean there's anything wrong with his Quirk, it's just how I perceived it. I'm used to people who've had fully functioning Quirks all their lives, but after talking to Midoriya-san I believe my disturbance with his Quirk comes from its late awakening."
There, that should throw off the students from the things he said and fit with the story All Might and Midoriya were trying to sell. At least for now. Once other Quirks started to awaken their story was going to have as many holes as a block of Swiss Cheese.
"Another benefit of touching people and knowing their genetic code is that I can use that information to heal them, in a limited fashion. I don't technically heal, it's more like I replace the broken bits."
Ida seemed to jump on that, his arm waved robotically as he asked, "What do you mean by that Yaoyorozu-san?"
Kenichi faced the serious student and smiled, "Call me Kenichi," He looked over everyone, "That applies to all of you, it's much less confusing for myself and Momo that way." He turned back to Ida, "It's simple really. I can't actually heal wounds. If you get a bruise, Recovery Girl could give you a Quick kiss to heal it. Meanwhile, I couldn't do anything for you. However! If you were to say, lose a finger in an accident. I could regrow your finger for you and it'd be just like the original. Think of it almost like personalized cloning. I can regrow and replace broken or lost pieces. So I'm great at super serious injuries but crap at minor ones."
Everyone looked pretty impressed by that. Though Jiro spoke up, "So, every time you touch someone you learn about their DNA or whatever and can then change into them, right? So, doesn't that mean that if you changed into them you could use their Quirk as well?"
Everyone looked surprised at the Question, then focused on Kenichi to await his answer. His didn't make them wait long, he nodded his head, "Yup. If I shapeshifted into you Jiro-san, I would be capable of using your Quirk. However! I wouldn't be anywhere near as proficient with it. Just like you did, I would have to learn how to use it properly and I would need to train with it to make it stronger. At most, I would be able to use the basics of it without training. Any of your advanced moves or techniques would require training. Not to mention any support gear that might be needed."
Everything he mentioned was one hundred percent true. He definitely needed to practice with Quirks he copied. Last night he'd been unable to restrain himself and had tried out Float amped up by the Stockpiling Quirk. He'd managed to slowly hover up a few inches before he lost control and launched himself into the ceiling. He fractured his skull, three vertebrae, and broke his wrist when he crashed to the ground. He'd have been in the hospital right now if he didn't have his regenerative abilities. Needless to say, he stuck to the basic Float Quirk after that. For now.
The group ate in silence for a bit as they digested the information he'd given them on his Quirk. Midoriya had actually pulled out a notebook and was making further notes about Kenichi's Quirk. Though he, thankfully, kept quiet on Kenichi's ability to copy and use people's Quirks without needing to shapeshift into them first.
They didn't talk about much else before lunch was over and they made their way back to the classroom. Today was the first Heroics class and they were all at least a little excited. As they waited for their teacher to show up, they heard thundering footsteps coming down the hall. Soon a voice that all of them recognized called out, "It's meeeee..."
"No way!"
"It can't be!"
There were many exclamations of surprise and looks of excitement among the class as the door was thrown open and All Might in his muscle form threw the door open and flung himself into the classroom, "Coming though the door like a normal person!"
Because normal people had invisible wind ruffling their capes while striking powerful poses in a Silver Age hero costume. There was plenty of excited chatter as the students all talked about his costume, his posing, or his complete lack of actually entering the classroom normally. All Might continued to switch through poses as he addressed the class, "Foundational Hero Studies! Through this class we'll be building up your hero foundations through various trials! You also get a ton of credit for it!"
He faced the class and whipped out a thick plastic card with the word 'BATTLE!' emblazoned on it, "Let's jump right in with this! The Trial of Battle!"
That got the more combat oriented students blood pumping. Bakugo looked especially excited, "To go along with your first battle there's also this!"
So saying he pulled out a remote control and pressed a button. Shelves slowly slid out of the wall revealing numbered briefcases, "Your costumes! We prepared your gear using the information you sent in to us to match your Quirks!"
That got everyone excited even further. Though Midoriya was the only one not to collect a briefcase, instead he picked up his school bag and held it close. Kenichi honestly thought the costume that Midoriya's mother made him was the most heartfelt one he had through the whole series.
"Everyone go get changed and meet me at Ground Beta! Remember, everything you bring into the battlefield is vitally important!"
With his final words said, All Might vanished in a blur. The students quickly gathered their costumes and made their way to the changing room. Kenichi kept an eye and out wasn't surprised to see that everyone's costumes matched what he remembered. He hadn't been interacting with them long enough to make waves that would change their initial outfits. That would change in the near future though, he was sure.
As for his own costume, it wasn't anything too spectacular. He wore a pair of black, modified, military style BDU's. The modifications were stylish crisscrossing straps that connected from the middle of his back to either side of the crotch while hanging low enough to swing below the thigh pockets. The cloth was designed to be blade resistant as well. It was purely cosmetic, but a heroes outfit needed to have some style to it. Otherwise he would have stuck with plain BDU's. His pants were tucked into matte black leather boots with thick rubber soles and steel toes that rose to past his ankles to the middle of his shins.
On his torso he wore a black sleeveless armored combat vest with a multitude of pockets on the front and a simple hood. It sported a heavily stylized biohazard symbol on the back that looked to be made of DNA helixes in dark green. In low light the symbol would be much harder to see. Around his waist, he wore a utility belt that contained a plethora of hard flip top containers filled with a variety of items that could prove useful. Lastly, hanging from his utility belt in the middle of his back was a thick face mask that included eye protection, air filtration, and even a small air supply that would let him breath in airless conditions for up to five minutes. The lower half of the mask looked like a monstrous mouth filled with dagger-like teeth.
He glanced over at Mineta and grimaced. He didn't care what anyone else said. There was no way anyone, not even his precious Momo, could convince Kenichi that Mineta was not wearing a diaper. It was a horrendous design choice and would make everyone's first impression of him as a hero disturbing. A first impression that would take a serious amount of effort to make anyone forget. Kenichi chose to ignore the pervert and joined the rest of the class in walking to the entrance of training ground beta.
Kenichi glanced over at his sister and grinned broadly. Her current hero outfit was radically different from her original design while still sticking with her color scheme and giving her all the bare skin she needed for her Quirk. Instead of a leotard she wore multiple pieces of clothing. Her top was an armored crop top with no back. It was held in place at her shoulders and with a thin strip of cloth that attached to the back of her shorts.
For the lower half of her outfit she wore short shorts that were long enough to not be indecent while exposing as much of her thighs as possible. Around her waist was a utility belt similar to Kenichi's filled with simple items that it would be a waste of time and effort to create or to save time by not having to create them. Her knees were protected by armored pads while her feet were decked out in practical armored boots, no heels for her! Lastly, she had a thick watch-like device strapped to her left arm that was a voice activated computer. With it she could quickly ask for any information she stored on it and then view it to make an item.
The whole outfit was red and trimmed in white just like her original had been. The biggest benefit of the outfit was that she actually had more exposed skin without treading into dangerous territory and showing off a large amount of cleavage. They both greatly approved of the design and she still looked amazing in it so she didn't lose an ounce of her appeal while looking more professional.
All Might stood at the entrance to training ground beta and patiently waited for the students to join him. He was honestly in the best mood he could remember since the fight with All For One that had crippled him. He felt like he was twenty years old in the prime of health. Aches and pains he hadn't even realized he had were gone. He thought he'd been happy and grateful when he discovered Midoriya-shonen, but meeting Yaoyorozu-shonen had been one of the major turning points in his life that had brought him out of the dark and back into the light. While he could still only perform his heroic duties for a few hours a day while using the embers of One For All, he could at least be in his muscle form for his classes without worry, as long as he hadn't used all of his strength for the day. It was also nice to be able to drop into his skinny form as a bit of a disguise. He loved his fans, but it was nice to be able to go to the grocery store without having to sign a dozen autographs while looking for his favorite breakfast cereal.
When he caught the sound of the students approaching, he quickly looked up and observed their costumes. Quite a few of them were impressive, though not necessarily for the right reasons. He'd read over the information they had on the students Quirks as well as viewed their performance during the practical exams. So, he couldn't fathom what purpose wearing a full suit or armor could possibly serve Aoyama-shonen.
Kaminari-shonen, and Jiro-shojo looked to be in street clothes with some minor accessories for their Quirks. Meanwhile Ojiro-shonen was wearing a simple white gi with a minor modification. He didn't even want to contemplate what Hagakure-shojo's 'costume' implied as it was just boots and gloves.
His gaze traveled over Bakugo-shonen and he hide an grimace. He was not a fan of heroes that carried items specifically designed to cause as much damage and harm as possible. He knew that sometimes accidents lead to a loss of life or worse, sometimes the only option was to take a life to save more. It was ugly but it was the truth of the world, a truth he constantly worked his best to keep from coming true. However, making support gear where its only purpose is harm? It rubbed him the wrong way.
He didn't have much else to say about the remaining costumes. Though, Ashido-shojo could have definitely chosen a less eye watering color scheme and design. He finally turned his gaze to the two students who had changed his life. First, he looked over Yaoyorozu-shonen's outfit and only felt that it was a bit too militaristic looking for his tastes and much too dark being mostly black. Perhaps lighter colors with less of a focus on militarism.
Lastly, his gaze fell upon his successor as he jogged out of the tunnel leading into the training ground. Even with his formidable willpower he wasn't completely able to hold back a snort of amusement. The clear homage to himself was far too obvious! He covered his mouth and faked a cough to hide his snort of amusement.
Once everyone had gathered he smiled broadly while placing his hands on his hips, "I'm liking everyone's style! Very cool!"
Ida quickly raised his hand, "Sensei! Will we be having mock battles in the city like we did in the exam?"
All Might shook his head, "No, today we will be doing indoor urban combat! Villain activities that make the news most often are the ones visible in the public eye. However! This makes up a much smaller portion of criminal activity than you would expect. The truly dastardly ones hide their crimes from the light of justice by being indoors! Drug rings, weapons caches, fighting rings, and all kinds of criminal enterprises happen indoors. For this training session you will all be battling indoors as two member Hero and Villain teams!"
All Might was immediately inundated with questions. He couldn't follow them all but when he heard Uraraka-shojo asking if there was a threat of expulsion, he internally winced. Children and potential heroes shouldn't be afraid that every lesson could be their last. School was a place meant for teaching, a safe place to make mistakes and grow from them. Clearly the incident with Aizawa had left a scar on the students. All students should be able to trust their teachers to do what's best for them. It says so right in the manual!
All Might cleared his throat, "Stop! I don't have Super Hearing!" He quickly pulled out a sheet of paper that he'd conveniently written the planned exercise out on, "For this training mission we will have a pair of 'Heroes' and 'Villains.' The Villains have a nuclear device and plan to detonate it in fifteen minutes unless their demands are met. The Heroes must capture the Villains or the device before the time limit expires. If the Heroes manage to capture both Villains or touch the nuclear device, they win. If the Villains capture both Heroes or time runs out, the Villains win. Teams will be chosen by lottery!"
They quickly began drawing lots after Ida's question about the team selections was answered by Midoriya. Kenichi watched with interest as he highly doubted that many, if any, teams would be the same as before. They all quickly drew and while Kenichi couldn't recall any teams but the Midoriya versus Bakugo match, he was gratified to see that they had different pairs this time.
Team A, Ashido Mina and Sero Hanta.
Team B, Ida Tenya and Uraraka Ochaco.
Team C, Shoji Mezo and Hagakura Toru
Team D, Midoriya Izuku and Aoyama Yuga
Team E, Kirishima Eijiro and Ojiro Mashirao
Team F, Jiro Kyoka and Asui Tsuyu
Team G, Todoroki Shoto and Tokoyami Fumikage
Team H, Mineta Minoru and Bakugo Katsuki
Team I, Yaoyorozu Kenichi and Kaminari Denki
Team J, Yaoyorozu Momo and Sato Rikido
Kenichi grinned to himself, it looked like things might be a bit fun. Though he had thought, just for a moment, that he and Momo would be on the same team since they drew near last with only two matching letters left. He was both sad that they hadn't and glad that they hadn't. As much as he wished to work with his sister, he knew she needed to work with other people to spread her wings. He also felt really, really sorry for whatever team she went up against. They were going into an urban environment with enclosed spaces right after Momo realized she could produce gasses. There were only a few people he could picture having the ability to get past her. Hopefully he wouldn't have to be the one going up against her.
He patiently waited as the first match-up was determined. All Might drew the first balls. The hero team, Team D. The villain team, Team H.
Kenichi blinked at that. It looked like some things were just plain fated to happen despite the odds.
AN
For the record, the teams and matchups were 100% randomly generated. Even the fact that Midoriya and Bakugo are fighting was random. I'm also glad that Momo and Kenichi didn't end up on the same team. Those two together is beyond broken. Seriously. Momo is by far the greatest ultimate support hero for whoever she is working with. Add in Kenichi's flexability with Quirks and his body with her support gear and I honestly can't think of anyone within the known MHA canon that could stand up to the pair of them.
Moving on.
I should be posting chapters of this more often once more as I've gotten a good number of chapters written for my DxD story that I can begin posting now. My plan is to go back and forth between them... As long as I can stop thinking of other fun story ideas that distract me. No, seriously. I've got a bunch of other partial ideas. Some stupid, some interesting, some just plain distracting until I write them down.
Anyway, if you want to read more head over to pat-reon slash thomasdarkrose and you can read up to chapter 18 of Biokinetic, or up to chapter 12 of the new version of Fabricator. Though I plan to post the first couple of chapters of Fabricator v2 today.
Until next time!
