Prologue A Worrying Situation

It was another tedious day for Princess Luna. Dealing with the daily complaints of the Nobles. How they didn't need to pay the more than the peasantry for imported goods. Really, they always had the same silly complaints about everything. But the concerning thing for her was that she only had ten more years.

Ten more years before her sister returned. She didn't hate the idea of her return, she just wished her sister was herself. Instead of some nightmare version. Not only that, but she couldn't help Celestia. After all, she could not wield The Elements of Harmony anymore. Worse still, her apprentice Starlight Glimmer had abandoned her studies. Who knew what had become of her? But what could she do now? Young ponies with intense magical abilities were not easy to come by. What was she going to do?

"Are you alright Aunt Luna?" a voice asked.

Luna looked up from her niece Sunset Shimmer. She a young caring alicorn who had lost her parents at an early age. She lived at orphanage for the first eight years of her life. A lot of the fillies and colts made fun of her for being a blank flank. The adults tried to help Sunset by giving the offenders extra chores to do. But that just made them angrier. They would often wait until the caretakers were out of sight to verbally abuse Sunset. Saying that No pony would ever want her. Then one day Luna was visiting the orphanage to make sure that the young foals had everything they needed.

"Hey it's the freaky Blank Flank." said a young male voice.

"Please just leave me alone. I just want to be left alone." Said a crying filly.

"Yeah maybe we will. After all, we've got a chance to get of getting out here, but who would love somepony like you." Said another young filly in a cruel voice.

Luna turns the corner to see three foals, they're all around the age, but two had their cutie marks and the last one didn't. And most surprising of all was an alicorn. Luna decided to step in.

"Is there a problem here children?' Luna asked.

"N-no Pr-p-princess." The two bullies said together. They didn't want to get in trouble with the highest authority in the land.

"Fine. I am sure you two have somewhere else to be, I suggest you go there. Be respectful of others in the though, as you don't know how things can turn out. I hope you two have a nice day." Luna said.

The two foals ran off. leaving Luna with the much younger alicorn.

"It's alright. Everything will be okay now." Luna said reassuringly as she wrapped a wing around the filly.

"W-why did you help me?" Sunset asked slightly confused.

"Because everypony deserves to be loved." Luna said with a smile.

That was seven years ago. Sunset was now 13, and a major part of Luna's life. She could talk to her about almost anything. She was also the only one that knew the secret of Luna's sister. Well maybe it wasn't so much a secret as she was just the only pony who knew it wasn't a myth. But that also made it hard for Luna to keep her thoughts private.

"I'm fine Sunset." Luna said with a smile."Just tired of dealing with the nobles."

"Like I'm going to fall for that?" Sunset asked."You're thinking about her again aren't you?"

"I have to protect my little ponies Sunset, I just don't know how." Luna said worry obvious in her voice.

"You always do what is best for everypony Auntie, you'll come up with a solution." Sunset said reassuringly."Things always have a way of working out. I didn't think I would ever get a home much less a family, now look at me a princess who has the greatest Aunt anypony could ever ask for."

Luna got up from her desk and gave her niece a nuzzle. Sunset gladly returned it. They had both been a little more than lost souls and were glad that they found each other, but Sunset could tell Luna still missed her sister. And not just that, but that she needed somepony else in her life as well. But who or what she had no idea.

"Why don't you go for a walk?" Sunset suggestioned."It should help clear your head. Maybe stop by the school? Just to see how things are going."

Luna didn't understand why, but something just told her to take the advice. She was passing by The Stellar Unicorns Academy when there was a magical zap. And what look like a magical lighting bolt filled the day sky. Then a second later, there's a crashing sound from the building and a huge dragon head popping out of the building. It was the old dragon egg test at her school. Except instead of just getting a reaction from the egg, somepony had done the impossible: they actually hatched the egg.

She flew into the examination where most of the ponies had been turned into potted plants, there was a gigantic dragon where the egg should have been, and a young filly emitting magic levels that an adult alicorn would have trouble getting. She went up to her and put a hoof on the filly's shoulder. The filly's eyes stopped glowing and she looked up in shock. The examers turned back into ponies, the dragon turned back into a baby, and the child's guardian was turned back into a pony as well.

"Well, I don't believe I've ever met a pony with your amount of magic ability before." Luna said gently to the foal.

"Huh?" Twilight asked.

"But your going to have learn to control those abilities. I would like to take you on as my apprentice." Luna continued in a friendly voice.

"Huh?" Twilight asked.

"That sounds like a wonderful opportunity Twilight." Said her guardian.

"Miss Kind Heart?" Luna asked confused.

"Twilight is another orphan Princess Luna." Miss Kind Heart informed her. While whispering something to her.

"So what do you say Twilight? Because there is one more thing." Luna asked as she pointed to the foal's flank.

"My Cutie Mark?! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!" Twilight said while prancing around the ruler of Equestria. Though once she calmed down she accepted Princess Luna's offer.
