This story is set in the year 1984. I don't own the Dukes of Hazzard. (fic request for Steven St Peter Jr)
Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane was hiding out in his favorite speed trap, waiting for a victim to drive by. His dog, Flash started whining.
"You need to use the little girl's room, Flash?" Rosco opened the passenger door for her.
Flash got out of the car and trotted behind some bushes to do her thing.
"Come on, Flash, hurry up, darlin'." Rosco coaxed.
Flash came trotting back over to the car, but she didn't get in: she stood barking at Rosco.
"What is it, velvet ears?" Rosco scooted over to the other side of the car.
Flash trotted back over to the bushes, and Rosco followed her.
There was a little boy, huddled up against a tree.
"What are you doing here?" Rosco bent down next to him.
Flash went up and sniffed his hand. The boy petted her, but ignored Rosco.
"What's your name, son?" Rosco took his hat off.
The boy turned his head away, burying his face Flash's wrinkles.
Rosco stood up and headed back to his car.
"This is sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane calling his little fat buddy, come on."
"Did you write any citations like I said to, Rosco?" Boss asked.
"No, Boss, I didn't, but I will! Listen Boss-"
"You jackass! You've been out there for five hours!" Boss interupted.
"I'm sorry about that Boss, but there's a little boy hid out in some bushes an' he won't tell me his name."
"Drive him on down to the orphanage they'll know what to do with him." Boss replied.
"Oh, good idea, Boss." Rosco set the CB down and was about to leave, when Boss said:
"If you don't write at least six tickets today, I'm taking it out of your pay!" Boss shouted.
"Boss! That ain't fair I-"
"Rosco! Just write them tickets!" Boss shouted, and set the CB down.
"I oughta knock him into the middle of next week!" Rosco slammed the CB down and headed back to where his dog was still sitting with the boy.
"I'm gonna take you somewheres nice, with food an' a bed." Rosco offered.
"You can't do that!" The boy shouted.
"I jus' wanna help ya. Could you tell me where you live?" Rosco asked.
"I don't live no place." He replied.
"Do you live at an orphanage?" Rosco asked.
"No! Don't take me there, please!"
"If you tell me where you live, I won't have to." Rosco persisted.
"I told you, I don't live no place!"
"Who's your momma and daddy?"
"I ain't got none!"
"You ain't got none?" Rosco stood up. How am I gonna talk him into going with me to the orphanage?
"Is that a real police car?" The boy pointed at Rosco's patrol car.
"Yeah, that's an official Hazzard County Police car!" Rosco giggled proudly.
"Can I drive it?" He begged.
"You ain't old enough to drive. You can ride in it though."
"Jus' so long as ya don't take me to the orphanage." He crossed his arms.
"Alright, I'll take ya for a ride." Rosco offered.
"Neat, thanks!" The boy ran to the car.
"I didn't catch your name, though." Rosco started.
"Corey."
"Nice ta meet you Corey. My name's Rosco." Rosco got Flash back into the car and took off.
"If you don't live at the orphanage, where do you live?" Rosco asked him.
"I do live there, I just don't wanna go back." Corey sighed.
"Ain't they nice to you there?" Rosco asked.
"Yeah, but I want a family.? Corey sighed.
"I'm sure someone will want to adopt you sooner or later." Rosco assured him.
"Nobody will, on account of I've got down syndrome." Corey told him.
"What's that?" Rosco asked.
"It makes my face a funny shape an' I can't learn too good." Corey explained.
"Your face don't look funny to me, it looks right normal." Rosco looked at him.
"Ya really think so?" Corey smiled.
"I sure do." Rosco smiled back.
"Hey Rosco?" Corey asked.
"Yeah?"
"I'll make a deal with ya..."
"What's that?"
"If you take me on patrol with you once a day, I'll let ya take me back to the orphanage." Corey offered.
"Sounds good to me. You can be my little deputy! I always wanted a deputy that wasn't a dipstick!" Rosco giggled, thinking of Enos and Cletus.
Just then, Rosco saw the Duke boys changing a tire on the General Lee.
"See them boys there?" Rosco pointed at Bo and Luke Duke.
"Yeah." Corey looked.
"They's been 'causin' the law trouble since they was born." Rosco pulled up next to the General Lee.
"Aw, dang it it's Rosco." Bo sighed.
"Hurry up with that tire so we can get outta here." Luke urged.
"Maybe if you'd help, it wouldn't take so long." Bo grunted.
"Alright, you Duke boys! I'm giving you a ticket for impedin' traffic!" Rosco giggled as he made out the ticket.
"Rosco, we's pulled off to the side." Luke complained.
"That don't make no nevermind, you boys is gettin' a ticket!" Rosco tore it off the pad and held it out for Luke to take.
"Sorry Rosco, we just ain't in the mood today." Bo jumped into the drivers side and Luke quickly slipped in the passenger side.
With that, the Dukes were off, leaving Rosco in a cloud of dust.
"Freeeze!" He shouted, getting in his car and starting to chase after them.
"What'd they do wrong?" Corey asked.
"They didn't accept their ticket!" Rosco snapped.
"Ticket for what, they was jus' fixin' a tire?" Corey asked.
"You just don't understand how the law works, Corey." Rosco explained.
Then the General Lee went flying high, and stayed in the air for a good 6 seconds, until it dropped down on the other side of the pond.
"Ooh..." Rosco muttered as he put on the brakes. He knew he couldn't make the jump, and he didn't want to risk wrecking with Corey in the car.
"Wow." Corey sat in awe as he watched the Duke boys drive off.
"See how much trouble them boys is?" Rosco looked at Corey.
"That was neat." Corey was still staring at the dust cloud.
"Yeah, well, it's also illegal to evade arrest, an' them Duke boys know better 'an that." Rosco turned the car around and headed back for Hazzard.
He dropped Corey off at the orphanage and headed back to his speed trap. He had to get a few cites, or else his pay check would be dipped into: more than it already was.
