Balance

Chapter IX

The Last Stand.

The Earth Empire has invaded the United Republic! After Kuvira demonstrated the power of her spirit energy weapon, President Raiko surrendered the city, but the Avatar refused to give up without a fight. Korra held Baatar jr. Hostage, hoping to force Kuvira to back down, but the plan failed, and she fired on Team Avatar's hideout. Can anything or anyone stop Kuvira and her mecha-giant?

Republic City, Rubble.

The floor lifted showing Naruto and Bolin lifting the slab and having the others walk out. Once everyone got out, Naruto and Bolin dashed out letting the large slab fall. Tenzin used airbending to go up a building and saw Kuvira's Colossus walking through the harbor as her army went over the bridge. "Kuvira's heading our way with a platoon of mecha-suits."

"What should we do?"

"We got help," Naruto said as the Bijū, the size of a one-storied building, walked over. "At the very least they can make an opening to get inside as they never fought against metal that size before."

They then grew to their full size and jumped on top of nearby buildings. As the Colossus got into the city, Kuvira's eyes widened as seeing the spirit she saw at her camp but eight more. Matatabi jumped over and crashed into the chest as Son Goku jumped up and slammed down on its shoulders. Kurama got to the back and held it down as Shukaku, and Isobu grabbed the legs. Gyūki used his tentacles to hold the gun pointing straight up.

Saiken sprayed acid on the stomach creating a small hole before Team Avatar, Lin, and Su went inside.

In the cockpit, Kuvira on a platform surrounded by switches and levers looked at a man, "Initiate lockdown. Find the Avatar and whoever else is with her."

Down below, Naruto knocked a guard out and tossed him off the railing. "We need to move fast," Korra said as they stood by a ladder leading up. "Su, Lin, climb up to the arm and try to disable that weapon. Asami, Mako, Bolin, get to the engine and see if you can power this thing down. I'm going after Kuvira."

"And I'll come to make sure no one else attacks," Naruto said as he grabbed the ladder and looked over. "Ready?" Korra nodded before Naruto let her go first before following and looked up at her ass. "Well, the view's nice in here."

They all went to the areas before going to different ladders. In the engine room, spirit vines are electrified and feed power to the tank. Suddenly, a hatch is cut open with lava shuriken before Mako, Bolin, and Asami get up. A guard shoots metal plates at Mako and dodges before throwing a fire blast at him.

Asami reached for a lever and pulled it down as Bolin was fighting another guard. Dodging electricity, she went to the other and turned it off before electrifying the guard with her glove. "That was easy." She said with a smile. Only for nothing to happen before going to the controls and starting hitting a couple of buttons. "Got it!"

She said before going to the next one and finally turning the engine off.

Over with Lin and Su, they're continuing their ascent on their cables. They land on a small ramp and walk through the tunnel to see the cannon's operations. Close-up on them as metal plates are shot at them. I'll deal with this guy. Disable the weapon!" Lin said as she ripped a wall to shield them.

She jumps to the ground and confronts the guard. Using a metallic extension of her armor, she blocks additional plates and moves toward him. She shoots a metal cable but the guard jumps backward and fires a fragment of metal at her that he ripped off the wall, but Lin kicks it away.

Suyin watches the weapon operate, seeing bullets loaded into metallic holes. She uses her bending to bring down the chain of holes and watches as they tumble downward. The vine cartridges hit the bottom of the arm and explode, sending a mass of expanding purple energy screaming upward; Suyin is forced to jump toward the tunnel's entrance and duck to avoid the blast. After the explosion passes, she gets back up and smirks, seeing the cannon has been disabled as Lin got over. "Nice work."

"The outside may be platinum, but we can do a lot of damage here," Su said before they started bending the gears.

Outside, Gyūki felt the arm slack before pulling it off and tossing the cannon to the Spirit Wilds. He dropped the arm on a building as the sisters walked out.

Inside, Naruto metalbends the door to the cockpit and looks at Kuvira. "Are you going to fight me?"

"Nope, Korra's called dibs." He then metalbends the guard out the window before looking back at Kuvira. "But if she really can't do this, I'll take you on."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence."

"Anytime honey."

Korra immediately attacks with blasts of fire and air, knocking out the soldier; Korra lands, and the Avatar and Kuvira begin to duel. She throws fire at the military leader, who dodges. She fires back with liquefied metal, which Korra manipulates and throws back at her, throwing her into the control panel. Kuvira quickly gets back up and charges, but Korra ducks.

Kuvira turns and fires metal plates, but Korra dodges them. The metalbender shoots one of the radio speakers at the Avatar, who uses airbending to throw it out of danger. She bends an arc of fire at her foe, who jumps up and lands, bending the platform down, launching Korra into the air, who hits the roof and is locked in when Kuvira bends metal around her.

The military leader bends the Avatar around the roof before throwing her into the control panel, smashing it. Just as Kuvira sets to attack again, Korra gets out of the way before being hit. She prepares to launch three metal fragments.

Korra throws a blast of fire with a punch and dodges several metalbending attacks from Kuvira; they fly past her as Kuvira rotates into the frame. As soon as she does, Korra attacks her with airbending before sending a kick at Kuvira amplified by firebending. They miss as Kuvira dodges, spins around, her three orbs of metal floating next to her head, and sends multiple fragments of the metal at Korra.

As Korra firebends at her Kuvira blocks the attack by reforming a shield with the metal from her orbs, Korra stops firebending and jumps into the air, metalbending the shield down and kicking a gust of air at Kuvira, who tumbles backward and slams into the windows and control panel. Briefly staggered, she sends the shield at Korra.

Korra ducks easily under it and physically attacks Kuvira, locking her legs around Kuvira's neck and flipping her over, throwing her backward onto the control platform, hitting the platform two times before rolling to a stop. Korra bends the metal beneath her, tossing her briefly limp form into the air. As Korra jumps into the air to land a crushing blow.

Kuvira, now fully awake, sees the oncoming Korra. Korra and Kuvira act simultaneously in midair, Korra airbending at Kuvira even as Kuvira bends a panel of the floor at Korra. The two blows land at the same time and both Korra and Kuvira are tossed away from each other by the combination of attacks, landing at opposite sides of the cockpit of the Colossus in clouds of dust yells.

The cockpit shook before the two rolled and fell out of the opening Naruto made and fell to the ground before Chōmei grabbed them and moved back before landing by the Wilds. "It's over. You're gonna call off your army and surrender to President Raiko. Then you and-uh!"

Korra stopped as Kuvira bends a chunk of rock at her, catching her in the face and sending her flying across the pile of debris. Naruto flew up to Chōmei and looked at the Bijū." Let them fight… Honor thing."

"OK."

Korra comes to a stop face down in the street; with a groan, she lifts her head and sees Kuvira escaping down the street, limping badly. After a glance behind her, Kuvira takes off down the street toward the Spirit Wilds in the distance, her arm braced across her body.

He saw Korra go in before seeing a glow. "Shit Chōmei!"

"On it!"

Chōmei flew over and grabbed the gun that was overloading and flew straight up before getting high enough to let go as it exploded, the beam still shooting straight down.

BOOM!

The gun exploded in the air as a yellow beam shot out from the middle of the Wilds. "What the hell?" Naruto flew down before looking at the light. "A new spirit portal?"

Spirit World.

Naruto ran in and saw Korra talking to Kuvira. Korra tells her where they are and explains that the energy from her weapon created a new portal and sent them there. Kuvira expresses bewilderment as to why Korra would save her life after the things she has done. Korra replies that she thinks she saw a bit of herself in Kuvira; Kuvira rejects the presumption angrily, and Korra explains the similarities in their personalities, their determination, and occasional thoughtlessness.

Kuvira, falling to her knees in the flowers, tells Korra that this is her fault and that if she had surrendered, this would not have happened. Korra retorts that Kuvira brought her downfall on herself, having had full knowledge of the wrongness of her actions while doing them.

An angry and distraught Kuvira accuses Korra of being absent, thereby forcing her to do something, as Suyin had chosen not to step in and take over the Earth Kingdom while it was in chaos, "abandoning" her people. She expresses the opinion that she had no other choice, that since no one else would act to save the country, she had to act herself.

Korra, after a short pause, tells Kuvira that she thinks she understands her; Kuvira had been an orphan, and the feeling of abandonment tormented her. As a result, when she saw the Earth Kingdom thrown into chaos, she refused to abandon it to the same fate as herself. Her goal was to create a country sufficiently strong to ensure that it would never be threatened by any opposing force in the future.

Korra claims that she understands her predicament and knows how Kuvira was adopted by Suyin. Kuvira said that Korra could not possibly understand, as the Avatar is adored by millions, while she was rejected by her parents as if she meant nothing to them. Crying, she says that she could not allow the same thing to happen to her nation when it needed someone to guide it.

Korra sits down with Kuvira in the flowers, telling her that she can relate, as she would have given anything to regain some semblance of control after being poisoned by Zaheer.

Real World.

The three walked out before three mecha tanks aimed at them. "Release Kuvira., or we will attack."

"Stand down," Kuvira ordered her men. This battle is over. I owe the Avatar my life. Her power is beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve. I'll accept whatever punishment the world sees fit." She said before Zira and Lin walked over to handcuff her. "And Su, I'm sorry For all the anguish I've caused you and your family."

"You're going to answer for everything you've done."

Air Temple Island, A Few Weeks Later.

Bolin presides over the marriage of Varrick and Zhu Li on Air Temple Island. Varrick, in his typical manner, tells the cameraman to focus on him, as it is "[his] big day!" Bolin gives a short discourse on the sometimes-fickle nature of love and the bond between the two before Pabu climbs onto his shoulder with the vows tied in a ribbon around his neck.

When Bolin finds a section in the vows written by Varrick stating that Zhu Li will have to scrub the calluses off his feet twice a week, he refuses to read any further, but Zhu Li tells Varrick that she doesn't mind any of that, so long as she has him. Bolin concludes the ceremony with 'You may now do the thing', and Zhu Li happily kisses her new husband as the crowd applauds.

Varrick breaks down into tears, telling Zhu Li that the reason is she just makes him so dang happy!

Later in the evening, the dinner party is in full swing; Tahno, the former pro-bender, plays trombone as the people, including the new couple, dance. Mako compliments Wu on his newly developed leadership abilities

Good to see you, Prince Wu…"

They turned to see Naruto walk up with Korra both in their formal wear. "Or should I say, King Wu?" She asked as they stopped. "You ready to get back to Ba Sing Se and finally take the throne?

"Yeah... About that. I was thinking of stepping down as King and getting rid of the monarchy altogether."

"Are you joking?" Naruto asked, raising an eyebrow.

"For once, I'm not. Now, I know what you're gonna say: I'm being lazy, I'm afraid of responsibility, I'm putting my singing career before my people, but it's none of those things. I think the Earth Kingdom would be better off if the states were independent and had elected leaders like the United Republic."

"That's pretty wise and mature of you." Mako blinked at that.

"I think it's a great idea. The Earth Kingdom should evolve, and I'll do everything in my power to help you make that happen. And Naruto as well, right?"

"I guess… That'll be a little muddy at first if people who are like your aunt, no offense, get elected."

"Looking forward to working with you, but for now, the dance floor calls!" Wu smiled and danced to the dance floor.

Later, Naruto and Korra look at the new portal in the middle of the Wilds before hearing Tenzin. "I spoke to President Raiko. Tomorrow, he's announcing a plan to expand the city Rather than rebuild downtown."

"I thought that was happening already to replace the buildings that became unlivable?" Naruto asked before looking back at the light.

"I bet Aang never could've imagined there'd be a spirit portal right in the heart of Republic City." Korra sighed as Naruto wrapped an arm around her.

"Korra, you've transformed the world more in a few years than most avatars did during their lifetimes."

"But I feel like I've only just begun. There's so much more I want to learn and do." She said as Naruto looked down.

"And you will… hopefully there's no bullshit after this for a while… I mean with the help of the Bijū there was no damage here-" He stopped as each Bijū in their small forms ran past holding bottles of saki before jumping in an alcohol fountain. "Though that's a miracle in itself with them involved. Get out of there!"

"Make us!"

"You don't know how happy I am to hear you so full of hope again." Tenzin said to Korra.

"It's been a bit of a bumpy ride, huh?"

"I've come to realize life is one big bumpy ride," Tenzin said as she sighed.

"I know I was in a pretty dark place after I was poisoned, but I finally understand why I had to go through all that. I needed to understand what true suffering was so I could become more compassionate to others, even to people like Kuvira."

"That's not going to work on everyone though," Naruto said, getting their attention. "Sadly there's going to be someone once in a while who wants to watch the world burn if they don't take it over, the Fire Lords who started the war up to Zuko's father can be a testament to that."

"Excuse me, Tenzin."

Asami in a red dress walked up to them. "Varrick is looking for you. Something about wanting to borrow a glider suit to fly off the tower."

"That doesn't seem like a good idea." Tenzin jogged away at that, as the couple looked at the light.

"Wanna take a quick vacation?" Naruto asked the two.

Later, the three in their regular clothing walked into the new portal and disappeared inside going to the Spirit World.
