Beep...beep...beep.
Beep...beep...beep.
"Jaina, wake up." A male voice spoke in a whisper moving within the brisk morning air. It sounded like it was floating within her mind and into her ears. Only she never heard this male voice before in her life. It didn't belong to Jaden or her father.
Beep...beep...beep.
Beep...beep...beep.
Jaina let out a groan and a moan before opening blue eyes, rubbing the eyelids to get the sleep out of them to read the clock. 6:00 A.M. She and Jaden still had a few hours before the Duel Entrance exams took place. All she had to do was win her duel exam and she'll be a first year at Duel Academy.
It didn't take long for Jaina to out of bed and begin her normal morning routine; bathroom, shower, hair, clothes and last breakfast for the rest of the day and she could feel the nerves with her body starting to tick away around her, only a few more hours when it came to the upcoming duel test to get her into the dueling school. She was growing anxious by the minute and was surprised that she had been able to eat breakfast at all.
Looking down at her deck as she sat in the kitchen and leaning back into the wooden chair, staring at the cards and the tin she found within the backyard yesterday. The cards that Jaina now has within her deck should be able to help her get into Duel Academy. Now all she had to do was believe in the old saying created by Yugi Muto; believe in The Heart of The Cards.
If the Heart of The Cards wishes me to win and get into Duel Academy, then I will. Jaina told herself with a determined mind and feeling courage and pride grow within her body and toward her duel monster cards. Let the heart of the cards be with me. Similar to how the saying is Star Wars was; may the Force be with you.
"I'm gonna make it into Duel Academy and have fun along the way!" Jaina cheered loudly into the open room with her fist raised into the air, a grin growing on her face, full of glee.
Yoko let out a small breath as he watched Jaina. "Still strange as ever." The twins had grown up more than he imagine. Beginning buried in the ground for so long and seeing Jaden and Jaina in current time showed the two humans had grown up and didn't seem to be in their signal digits anymore. Only neither Yuki sibling could be old enough to be considered adults.
"Well, better go wake up Jaden." Jaina said to herself, standing up from the table and walking up the stairs that lead to the bedrooms and knocked onto the wooden door a few times only she didn't get any kind of replay from Jaden's end and started to open the bedroom door. "Jaden it's time to wake-"
The female stopped talking as her blue eyes landed on the bed and noticed it was empty. The covers were a mess on the floor and the window was open wide, the morning air blowing into the room and making Jaina feel the chill of cold air brush over her petite body. Blue eyes staring blankly at the sight before her and blinked a few times before a thought came together within her mind about what Jaden must have done.
"Jaden, I can't believe you went to the Duel exams without me." She grumbled, placing her hands on her hips before bringing them up and crossing them against her flat chest, letting out a small puff of air in anguish. Then she turned around and closed the door behind her. "And you had the nerve to use the window again. Unbelievable."
Unknown to Jaina, at this point in time, Jaden was still in his room and sleeping under the blanket on the floor, having fallen out of bed during the middle of the night after having a dream of him becoming the greatest player of Duel Monsters since Yuji Muto. Due to not knowing this Jaina would unknowingly make Jaden late for his Duel exam.
Jaina quickly gathered her things; deck, duel disk, bag, and jacket. Then ran out of the house and down the sidewalk in order to catch up with Jaden, believing he was ahead of her on getting to the exam. She was running so quickly she didn't take notice of a few neighborhood kids getting ready to play Duel Monsters and crashed into them. She stumbled and fell to the ground with a few cards from her own deck coming loose and falling onto the ground.
"Jaina, what gives?" One of the boys that was around Jaden's age demanded, having hit the ground as well.
"Sorry," Jaina answered, lifting her head off the ground and pushing herself up to sit on the sidewalk and overlooked the group of teens that stood a few feet away. They used to play Duel Monsters together, until they didn't wish to play with either Jaden or Jaina anymore for some reason, almost every kid on the street or in school didn't want anything to do with the twin's. What did she and Jaden do to them? The twins didn't have a clue because neither could recall event might have happened for this reaction to occur. "I'm kinda in a hurry."
"For what?" The youngest of the group asked, only being ten and picking up the cards that Jaina had dropped.
"The Duel Academy exams." She voiced toward the group in glee.
"Well, good luck."
"Thanks guys." Jaina told them.
The oldest of the group took notice of one of the cards that Jaina had dropped and his younger sibling had collected, eyes widened as he noticed the cursed card. The one of two Duel Monsters which done horrible things to anyone that harmed either Yuki twin. Yoko. The card that alwayed caused trouble and put kids into comas whenever Jaina or Jaden didn't win a duel, even somehow caused physical harm to anyone the card didn't like around either twin. Everyone thought the Yuki twins destroyed those cards forever.
"Y-you're using...t-this card?" The oldest question with fear growing within him.
"Why? What's wrong with it?" Jaina questioned with confusion after seeing that the card was Yoko. The Duel Monster card she found yesterday buried in the back yard. She's never seen so much fear gather on their faces before. It reminded her about the way Jaden and herself were looked at by anyone they wished to duel with and the shouted words; Witch Twins, echoed with the female's mind.
"It's evil." He whispered in horror, handing the cards back to her. "Get rid of it."
"Evil?" She questioned in confusion, moving her head to the side in confusion and staring at the group. The female blinked her blue eyes a few times. "How can a duel monster card be evil?"
"Well, that one is...later." The group said before running off. Not wishing to say anything or stay around any longer with Yoko around. They were just glad that the other one by the name of Yubel hadn't been with him or they would've gotten hurt or put into comas. It would seem the Witch Twins were going to Duel Academy.
Jaina looked down at Yoko's card and stared at it for a long minute. Having heard the other kid's words about the card that she placed within her deck. Is that why she had it buried in the backyard with all of those cards because it was evil. Was this card the reason why no one dueled with Jaden and her? This was the answer to why the kids didn't like Jaden and herself. It made her feel scared to her very bones.
"Are you really the reason why no one would be friends with Jaden and I? Is that why I got rid of you in the first place because everyone was afraid of you?" Jaina asked the card, she knew it wouldn't talk back to her. The female slowly stood up from the ground and started to make her way to the Duel Exam.
So you don't have any friends. Yoko realized. He could feel Jaina's sadness and could tell that he didn't wish for her to be mad or sad with him. He wished for her to be happy. After all he was the protector... Maybe I should suffer more. Being buried for years in the ground was his punishment for what happened all those years ago.
Yoko realize he was the reason for Jaina's sufferings. This was why they sent Yubel and him away. The Duel Monsters were causing the danger. This confused him. Had he gone too far once upon a time and took out his anger on Jaina when it came to how he treated her friends. I'll make it up to Jaden and you. I promise.
This would be the start of his redemption
Sitting around and watching the entry Duels for Duel Academy wasn't something Ezekiel (Zeke) Phoenix would've consider to be part of the job. Sitting on a wooden bench next to Professor Banner and talking about his future job as teacher assistance for the upcoming year when it came to Banner's classroom. Zeke loved dueling like his younger brother Aster Phoenix, but ever since their father had when killed things changed ever fast. For the past several years it was hard to get back into dueling for Zeke when Aster decided to become the family's Avenger and find leads on the person who took their father from them. Which caused Zeke to becoming disappointed at his brothers choices in life-even though Aster was a great duelist and already made it into the world of pro duelist, the older sibling was worried that Aster would lose his dueling spirit once the youngest Phoenix brother's goal was fulfilled and never touch Duel Monster cards again.
Revenge and rage feels Aster's heart and there was nothing the older brother could do to stop it. Zeke didn't even know how to raise Aster without some help from D and Sartorius, but it was hard to raise younger brother when Zeke blamed himself for not being home when their father's murder happened. Zeke basically let Aster see all the horrors alone; the blood soaking into the rug, the body of their father completely lifeless, and the cards that laid scathed around the room.
One couldn't fix a trauma like that. No matter the time or place. So the distance began to grow between the two brothers. An impossible brotherly bond that was difficult to rebuild over long periods of time. Zeke hadn't been close with their father when Aster had-maybe that was why he couldn't bond with Aster- because of the age gap between them. Zeke was now twenty-one when Aster was fourteen, the youngest in the Duel League and Zeke was becoming a teacher.
But the two were still brothers, weren't they?
Zeke felt his phone buzzed within his jacket pocket and took it once. He noticed that D had sent him another picture of Aster, who won his current Duel Monster against some former student of North Academy, who was said to have been the number one duelist from last year pro duelers and Aster won. That wasn't any surprise to the older Phoenix brother in the slightest. Of course Aster would've won.
"I take it your brother won once again?" came the voice of Professor Banner from his side, holding onto his cat Pharaoh, a brown haired cat with some dark brown stripes across it's back.
"Yeah," Zeke answered, smiling slightly before putting the phone back into his pocket. "He's good at dueling."
"Does he know about you teaching at Duel Academy this year?" Banner asked, petting his cat that laid on his lap.
"I told him." Zeke explained to the teacher before letting out a small breath and shook his white haired head. "He didn't say much about it." Aster didn't say much about anything nowadays. The last time the two spoke was few months ago after Aster won another match against some big shot-whom Zeke could care less about the name at the moment-where he explained to Aster about his job at Duel Academy this year.
Good for you. Aster had told him with a shrug on his shoulders. You'll teach them and I'll defeat them.
But he understood what Aster was really trying to saying. Aster didn't need a dueling school to learn how to duel or be a pro duelist because the younger brother did everything like the Duelist of old. Dueling without any knowledge given at Duel schools, which started to come along after the public wanted to see dual matches and tournaments on television. Plus, many could make a living from Dueling by hit the news waves by storm. It wasn't just some card game anymore but a lifestyle.
"And he wasn't overjoyed?"
"You can say that." Zeke said, standing up and starting to walk away from Banner for now. He didn't wish to think his brother. Aster had started to become a touchy subject that no one talked to him about. Aster didn't even want to talk about him either.
I guess I really have screwed up a brother. Zeke thought. He let out a loud huff of air from his lips, looking up from the ground and noticing a female, maybe one of the duelist trying to get into the school. She walked by as the male take notice of the duel spirit hovering over the young girl. It had dark wings, three eyes, and long claws that could kill. His pale silver eyes had gone wide because he's never seen a Duel Monster like that before in his life. What kind of girl has that kind of card with their deck?
Yoko took notice of the male staring at him and game a playful smirked, knowledge him as Jaina walked by. So he could be seen by others, but not Jaina or Jaden. They didn't seem to be able to hear or see him yet. But they could in time.
Zeke blinked his eyes for a moment before his legs began to move after the female, curious about what that Duel spirit. He'd seen his father make cards with Duel Spirits in them when he was younger, but they were always the weak level monsters that looked playful and cheery, never any type of Duel Monster like that one before him. "Hey, wait."
"Uh, sorry sir." Jaina answered, sweet and a little confused about why the man was calling toward her. "I signed in with the people outside. Am I supposed to sign in with you as well?" Now confused about why they didn't say anything to her about this checking in with him.
"Uh, no. I was curious about the-"
"She can't see me." The Duel Spirit explained, shaking his head toward Zeke. "She'll think you're crazy...it's rare to see Duel Spirits."
"Uh, never mind." Zeke answered her, smiling a little with a small nod toward the line of duelists that were over on the far side, waiting for their duel exams. "Good luck in your duel."
"Thank you, sir." Jaina answered with a smile before walking away from him, almost skipping her way over to the line of duelists on the far end, standing behind a pale blue haired boy with glasses, who was going through his deck once more.
Zeke just let out a small breath he didn't realize he was holding.
Banner walked over from the bench, curious about the interaction between the female and Zeke. "What was that about?" The professor asked, holding the cat in his arms and keeping his voice smooth and soft when it came to looking for the answer, almost like he was a wise old elder that Zeke always told every secret or thought that was within his mind.
They both knew he could see Duel Spirits.
"She had an interesting Duel Spirit." Zeke explained as Banner stared at the female that was in line. Something flashed within Banner's eyes that Zeke thought he had been mistaken for something else within that very moment. Mainly because the Professors usual calm and nice nature seemed to disappear for a brief second.
"Really?" Banner finally spoke after a minute. Nothing but his normal and cheerful self-showed. "What was it?" He wondered, curious.
"Something with three eyes and wings," Zeke answered, before walking to see the other teachers.
Banner looked toward Jaina with something flashing within his mind for a moment. Keeping it to himself and hoped that the girl got into Duel Academy so that he could test the theory.
He was late. Jaden Yuki knew it with all of his being. Hearing the noise of the city the afternoon cars that were driving along the road as people walking to office jobs or leaving to have lunch. The teenage boy was running toward his future and couldn't stop or he'll be late. But he was already late because Jaina didn't wake him up and she went on to the Duel Exam without him.
Jaina, why didn't you wake me up on the day that I can't be late on? Jaden whined within his mind, forcing his legs to move as quickly as he could, not paying attention to anyone that he ran past. "All right. I got my deck, I got my gear, and I got two minutes to get to the Duel Academy Entrance Exam before they start." He breathed to himself as he ran, his red shoes hitting the pavement on the ground as he let out a small breath and almost grinned to himself. "Oh well, at least I'm not a student yet, they can't put me in detention hall for being late. Excuse me. Coming through...how are you doing?" He greeted people as he ran.
An older male was walking ahead of him, stopping in Jaden's pathed. He was male and wore some familiar clothes that Jaden had seen before, but his eyes and mind were elsewhere and didn't have time to place the male in front of him.
"Watch your back?" Jaden shouts, only for the guy to turn and Jaden hit the guys back before falling backwards onto the pavement below. Well, that hurt. He took notice that his cards and duel disk had gone into the ground and started to pick them up. "Sorry."
The older male observed the young duelist before him, looking at the Duel Monster cards and almost smiled to himself. "You're a duelist aren't you?" He asked, but he already knew the answer. Only this generation of duels would never have to go on the journey that he did.
Jaden turned around and said, "Yep, I'm just going to try out at the academy."
The male smiled, "You don't say?" His hand went toward his own deck because something deep within the cards was telling him that the boy would need a certain card if he was going to get into Duel Academy. Something about Jaden made him realize that one day the two will meet again.
"Yeah," Jaden said, laughing nervously to himself with eyes closed only to open them and take notice of the male that he was talking to. It couldn't be, but it was...Yugi Muto. The King of Games. Which made the male nearly speechless, "Yeah, Your-"
"Why don't you take this?" Yugi said, handing Jaden a Duel Monsters Card. As much as Yugi wished to talk to Jaden some more the two didn't have time. The boy needed to make it to the exams. Another time the two will talk and meet again. He knew that much. "Something just tells me that it belongs with you."
"Uh, wow." Jaden said in surprise, taking the card and starting at the gift he had been given by the King of Games. It was an honor and every Duelist dream to be given a card by Yugi Muto. Jaden would use the card given to him with pride.
"Good luck," Yugi told him, walking away from Jaden and having a strange feeling that the boy would have a great adventure ahead of him within the world of Duel Monsters. The journey that lies ahead would be Jaden to walk alongside many friends he would soon meet and duel against. The future was in his hands and Yugi Muto passed on the torch to him. For better or worst.
"Hey, wait." Jaden called out, only for Yugi to keep walking. "Thank you. I'll make you proud." He promised, bowing his head in respect toward Yugi and was given a thumbs up in return, which the older duelist was glad to hear from the new duelist. Jaden stood straight and stared in awe for a few seconds before looking down toward the card he was given;
Winged Kuriboh
Level One Light Monster
Fairy /effect type; if this card on the field is destroyed and sent to the GY: For the rest of this turn, you take no battle damage.
ATK 300 / DEF 200
The Duel Monster was a brown puff ball with small green arms and feet, each of these having a part of sharp and white claws. Its eyes were black with a small yellow base in the background surrounding them. And unlike normal Kuriboh cards this one had two white wings behind its puff ball form.
"Kooh" The Duel Monster cooed toward Jaden.
Jaden jumped in surprise the moment he heard the noise and asked himself; "What was that?" Looking around for the source of the noise and then back at his watch and noticed the time. Then he remembered where he needed to be. "The exam!" Taking off running down the street once more with the Duel Monster card in his hand. "I can't be the next king of Game if I'm late to the games."
A new beginning was about to start for the twins; Jaden and Jaina Yuki.
Jaina's duel to get into Duel Academy will be next chapter. We also met my second OC for Yu Gi Oh GX Zeke. I created him because I like the character of Aster and Zeke will have a role to play within this story but he main story line will be within season 2 of GX because that's when Aster will show up.
I also have Professor Banner here at the dueling exams for a reason. Plus, Zeke is a teacher assistant to Banner and can also see duel spirits. Banner's interest in Jaina will be explained later within the story, and yes, a part of an interest is because Zeke saw Yoko.
Next chapter Jaina will meet Syrus. Have a duel and we'll see what Chazz thinks of her for the first time as Jaden finally arrives at the exam.
