"Earth to Eddie…"
Eddie had been picking at her food for nearly twenty minutes. Which worried Jamie because Eddie loved food, no matter what it was. She managed to look up at Jamie.
"What?"
Jamie sighed and took another bite of his food.
"You haven't heard a single word I've said. Have you?"
Eddie gave Jamie a confused look and stuffed a piece of steak into her mouth. Swallowing, she answered.
"Sorry, what were we talking about?"
Sighing, Jamie put a hand on Eddie's shoulder, but then quickly took it away.
"This whole thing with Ellie is consuming you Eddie. She's going to be ok. I already told you that. She'll get a new heart and go to a good and loving family. You're getting attached aren't you?"
Eddie avoided Jamie's soft gaze and defended herself.
"I am not Reagan! I'm just concerned about her is all. She's all alone. She has no family. I've got her back. Every family so far that's come through doesn't want to deal with the fact that she has a bad heart."
Jamie managed to get Eddie's attention and kept her gaze as he tried to keep reassuring her. He knew she wasn't going to let this go though.
"Eddie I get that you want to make sure that Ellie get's everything she needs. But Child services has her covered. We have to start to move on. I'm going to keep telling you, you can't save every puppy in the pound."
1 week later
"Jamie? Could you get me some tea?"
Jamie looked over at Eddie.
"You sure you're feeling ok Eddie? How about I get you some soup while I'm at it?"
Eddie gave her best confident smile.
"I just need to eat something Jamie. As soon as I eat I'll feel better."
Jamie left the car and went inside the diner. Eddie closed her eyes and sighed. If she was honest, she felt like crap. She'd been feeling so-so the last couple of days. But it was manageable. She felt cold. She wrapped her jacket around her tighter. Then there was that pain again. It was sharp. She could barely hear Jamie when he got back to the car. Her head felt strange.
"Oh my god Eddie. You're burning up!"
The food he'd gotten for the both of them long forgotten as he put the car into gear. The whole time to Saint Victor's Jamie kept speaking to Eddie to try and keep her awake.
"Eddie? Can you hear me? Open you're eyes for me. Come on!"
Pulling into the emergency entrance, Jamie got out of the car and went around to the other side of and opened up the passenger side door, undoing Eddie's seat belt and scooping her up into his arms, running in through the emergency room doors.
"I need some help!"
A bunch of nurses and several doctors came to Jamie's aide. One took Eddie from his arms and placed her on a stretcher. He was the one to speak to Jamie.
"I'm Doctor Roberts. What happened to your partner?"
Jamie began following them down the hallway.
"I don't know. She said she was feeling kind of sick. I went to get some soup. She said she just needed to eat something and she'd feel better. By the time I got back to the car she was unconscious and had a fever. What's going on doc?"
Doctor Roberts shook his head and put a hand up.
"Officer Reagan, I'm sorry, but I cannot have you go any further. You can have a seat in the waiting room. I'll come and update you as soon as we know something."
Jamie took his hat in his hands and went to sit down in one of the hard chairs. He didn't even realize he was tapping hit foot against the floor making his left knee bounce. He sat for an hour and there was still no news. The pit in his stomach grew. He decided to go and visit Ellie up on the fourth floor. The elevator opened up and he walked towards the desk with the overwhelmed woman with the frowned permanently pasted to her face.
"Officer Reagan. No Office Janko today?"
Jamie swallowed the lump in his throat.
"No, she's uh busy today. Can I go and see Ellie?"
The woman nodded and pointed towards the room Ellie was in. Making his way over, he took a breath and opened up the door. The nurse, Erica smiled at Jamie as he stepped into the room.
"No Eddie today?"
Jamie shook his head no as he sat down in the rocking chair holding his arms out for Ellie.
"She's busy today."
Erica kept smiling and placed Ellie into Jamie's arms.
"She's becoming quite attached to you Officer Reagan. It's a shame that all these families have come through and they feel like she's a burden. She's a beautiful baby."
Jamie ran a finger over Ellie's cheek and she gave what amounted to a smile.
"If I may ask, where is she on the transplant list?"
Ellie was staring straight up at Jamie as he rocked her. Her tiny hand grabbing onto one of his index fingers.
"She's status 1. Now its just about waiting for a heart. Hopefully a couple of months. We're keeping her comfortable on pressors and keeping her well hydrated. Despite all this, she seems to be a very happy baby. By now she probably knows your smell. You would make a great father."
Jamie sighed. Maybe someday. Carefully getting up, Jamie handed Ellie back to Erica.
"I'll be back tomorrow. I have something I need to do. I'll tell Eddie that Ellie misses her."
Erica waved goodbye and Jamie head back down the waiting area in the emergency room. Just as he parked himself in one of the hard gray plastic chairs, Doctor Robert's came out from behind the emergency doors.
"Officer Reagan?"
Jamie stood up and put up his hand. Doctor Robert's came over.
"How is she doc?"
Doctor Robert's took a seat next to Jamie and nodded confidently.
"Eddie just came out of surgery and she's in recovery. She had Appendicitis. It was very close to bursting. She would've died had you not gotten her here on time. She's lucky. You can go and see her now."
Doctor Robert's led Jamie down to Eddie's room. He almost held his breath as he entered the room. Eddie was hooked up to several monitors. She had oxygen in her nose.
"Hey partner. You gave me a scare. The doc said it was your Appendix. They got it out in time. I don't know what I would've done if something else had happened and I lost you…"
Without even realizing it, Jamie reached a hand up and pushed some hair away from Eddie's face. He'd do anything for her. He needed to tell her how he felt, because tomorrow wasn't guaranteed.
