Chapter 5: The feelings we have

Jamie sat in the same chair he'd been sitting in for the last 12 hours. He'd only gotten up to use the restroom or bring food back and eat it in the room. He'd been waiting for Eddie to wake up. He saw Eddie take in a breath and he squeezed her hand, careful of the iv in her hand. Clearing her throat, Eddie creased her brow.
"Jamie? What's going on?"
Jamie felt tears coming to his eyes, but he kept them at bay. She was alive. He hadn't lost her. He pushed the call button on the remote on the bed. Doctor Roberts entered the room.
"Good to see you awake Officer Janko. Do you know why you're here?"
Eddie looked around the room, she was very confused.
"No. What happened?"
Doctor Robert's took a rolling stool and sat next to the bed. Jamie scooted his chair out of the way.
"You're partner here, Officer Reagan, brought you in. He got you here just in time. You had Appendicitis. It explains the fever. Had he gotten you here five minutes later, you would've been dead. You've got him to thank for your life."
Doctor Roberts left the room and now the two partners were alone. Jamie and Eddie both spoke up at once.
"I think we should get new partners."
Jamie smiled.
"I'll be sad that we won't be partners anymore. But I want to be clear about one thing. One thing I'm certain of is; I don't want to lose you Eddie. I've been in love with you since the first night you came out on patrol."
Eddie felt her mouth hanging open. Then she finally found her voice. She adjusted the oxygen in her nose.
"I've been in love with you for a long time. I know I've never acted on it because its strictly forbidden by the brass. Even if you thought I was 4 feet tall with an attitude. The other night when you saved me from choking to death on that onion ring kind of put it into perspective for me. So where do we go from here on a personal level? If you think about it, we've been dating for over three years now. You were and are such a pain in the ass sometimes."
Jamie smirked.
"Just keeping you on you're toes Eddie. In all seriousness though, how do you feel?"
Eddie moved slightly.
"Exhausted. Like I could sleep for a week."
Jamie moved closer to her. He placed a soft kiss to her lips. Then one to her forehead. Eddie continued her conversation.
"Mmm. That was nice. Will you stay with me tonight? Even if it is in the chair or the hard couch by the window?"
Nodding, Jamie rubbed her hand.
"I'm not going anywhere. You ok? You're breathing sounds a little rough."
Eddie grabbed for Jamie's hand.
"I'm ok Jamie. I'm just tired. I just need to sleep. Stay with me right here until I fall asleep?"
Jamie nodded and watched as Eddie's eyes drifted closed. It was a few minutes before her breathing evened out and he knew she was asleep. He knew he had to inform his father of the situation between him and Eddie. They were doing everything right. Getting new partners was a good idea. That way they could pursue their relationship further.
