Six weeks had gone by and Jamie and Eddie were no longer partners on the job. They were happy that their relationship was no longer undefined. But there was something that was missing. The family knew they were dating. Officially now. All the dates they had before they weren't defined they were just going out for drinks as friends. The couple was currently taking a walk through Central Park. Jamie was fiddling with something in his pocket. Eddie noticed and stopped walking.

"Jamie? You've been fidgeting for the last twenty minutes. You ok?"

Swallowing, Jamie slowly got down on one knee and took the box from his pocket and opened it.

"Edit Marie Janko, I have loved you since the first day I met you. I can't imagine spending one more day without the most beautiful, funny, and intelligent woman I have ever met. Will you do me the great pleasure of becoming my wife?"

Eddie sat for a moment and could only stare at Jamie with tears in her eyes. She noticed there was an audience around them. Some older and some younger. She knew she didn't want to drag this out any longer. She loved him more than food if that were possible.

"Yes!"

The crowd around them cheered as Jamie placed the ring on her finger. Standing back up, he brushed off his pant leg and held out an arm for Eddie to take, but not before pulling her in for a kiss. When they pulled apart, the crowd had disappeared.

"Ok, now we break the news at dinner tonight with the family."

Eddie stopped again and stared.

"Sunday dinner? Jamie I dunno…"

Jamie took both of her hands and held them. The smile was still plastered to his face.
"What? They already know we're a couple and that we're dating. They'll be happy for us. We're going to pull out all the stops tonight. By reciting our vows."

Eddie took a deep breath. She was nervous about this. But she had Jamie with her. They could do anything together. Eddie squeezed Jamie's hand.

"Let's go tell Ellie the news."

When the couple arrived at the hospital, the woman behind the desk looked up and gave a rare smile. Jamie was the one to speak.

"We came to see Ellie."

The small smile stayed on the woman's face and she pointed toward the room Ellie was in. Going in, they found Erica was just finishing up changing Ellie's diaper. She was fussy. Smiling, Erica placed Ellie into Jamie's outstretched arms. Lowering himself into the rocking chair, he began to rock slowly back and forth. Ellie seemed to calm as Jamie ran a finger over her tiny cheek. Jamie turned his gaze up to Erica.

"She looks better today."

Erica smiled and then looked through Ellie's extremely thick medical chart.

"Her numbers are up, and her pressure is better. If her numbers stay stable, we may take out the feeding tube. There is more good news. A couple came in this morning, they took one look at Ellie and they knew she was the perfect baby for them. They didn't seem bothered in the least about her medical condition."

Jamie felt a lump in his throat. Him and Eddie had just started the lengthy process of paperwork to try and adopt Ellie, knowing full well it would take awhile to go through. His heart broke at the news, and Eddie definitely wasn't taking it well at all. She spoke through a shaking voice.

"You mean someone is going to foster her? Jamie and I, we just put in the paper work to start proceedings in adopting her."

Erica pulled up a chair and motioned for Eddie to sit down.

"They also put in an application for adoption. But the two of you are the second one's in line if they fall through. So there is always a chance."

Jamie placed a kiss to Ellie's forehead and vacated the rocking chair having Eddie sit in it, placing the tiny baby in her arms. Eddie felt her tears begin to roll down her cheeks and she peppered kisses all along Ellie's tiny head. Casting a glance up at Erica, her eyes were shining.

"But she knows us. Jamie and I. We're practically her parents!"

Jamie put a hand behind Eddie's neck and massaged it gently.

"Babe, its ok. It'll all work out. You'll see."

It was another hour before the couple said their goodbye's to Ellie. Eddie was still devastated on the car ride over to Frank and Henry's house in Bay Ridge. Her head against the passenger side window.

"I can't help it Jamie. I see Ellie as my baby. I really think she see's you as her daddy."

Jamie smiled at the thought. Ellie had grown quite attached to him. She practically had him wrapped around her tiny hand.

"Don't worry babe. Things will be just fine. You'll see. We're here."

Eddie looked up at the brick house as they pulled up.

"This is a nice house Reagan. You grew up here?"

Nodding, he got out and went around to the other side and opened up the passenger side door. Helping her out and shutting to door, they walked hand in hand towards the front door. As he put a hand on to door handle of the front door, he felt Eddie's left hand shaking in his.

"Babe relax. It'll be fine. They love you."

Swallowing Eddie nodded following Jamie into the house.

"Hey everyone! We're here!"

Jamie stuck his head into the dining room with Eddie by his side and Henry was the first to see them.

"Jamie! Oh good! You brought Eddie! I want her to try my Lasagna. Everything is almost set on the table. Want to get some silverware and napkins?"

Jamie nodded and hoped that no one had seen Eddie's engagement ring, which had originally been his grandmother's on her hand. No one had. Walking into the kitchen, the couple was greeted by everyone else.

"Hey! Jamie! You brought Eddie. Good to see you!"

Jamie and Eddie were quick to get the napkins and silverware and set them up on the dining room table. The food all set on the table. The prayer was said and everyone started dishing out the food. Jamie took this time to clink his fork against his wine glass.

"Ok everybody I have an announcement to make."

Everyone's attention was now on Jamie and Eddie. Eddie felt her face flush a little. Danny was the first to speak.

"Let me guess, the two of you are pregnant."

Eddie dropped her fork onto her plate.

"What? No! I'm not pregnant. We just have an announcement to make. Jamie?"

Jamie shot Danny a look and then continued.

"No. Not yet. Eddie and I are getting married."

The whole table erupted in congratulations. Frank was the first to speak up.

"I want to be the first to welcome you to our family Eddie."

Eddie felt her cheeks become flush with slight embarrassment even though she didn't know why.

"Thank you commissioner."

Frank corrected her.

"You're not on duty Eddie. You can call me Frank."

Erin put in her two cents worth.

"Or dad…"

This solicited a chuckle from the rest of the room. Jamie added his own thought.

"There is something else. You know that baby Eddie and I saved awhile back? Her name is Ellie. We've put in papers to start the adoption proceedings. We're second in line behind another couple who also want to adopt her. But the woman at the office assured us if that fell through that we would be next in line. So there might be a chance. We also wanted to tell you guys our vows. But maybe its a better idea if you heard them at the wedding."

Erin nearly choked on her wine.

"V-vows…?"

Danny chuckled.

"The two of you wrote vows?"

Jamie nodded and squeezed Eddie's hand.

Jamie and Eddie were laying on the couch with the tv on but not paying much attention. Jamie was running a hand through Eddie's messy locks. She moved her head slightly and looked straight into his eyes.

"Jamie? If Ellie goes with that couple, she's going to forget all about us. She knows our voices. We're practically her parents."

Sighing, Jamie kept running a hand through Eddie's hair and then looked back at her.

"I know this is eating at you Eddie. I really do. It'll be ok. You'll see."

Jamie saw the look on Eddie's face.

"How can you just be so calm about this Jamie? Are you worried about this?"

Deep down, Jamie was worried. But if he kept a positive attitude, things would turn out right. Sighing he added his own thought.

"I'm keeping a positive attitude. To answer your question yes. I am worried. Ellie wormed her way into my heart. Her tiny smile every time I rock her to sleep. When you were in surgery to remove your Appendix, I took a video of her. She grabbed a hold of my finger with her right hand and smiled at me."

Jamie dug his phone out of his pocket and showed Eddie the video.

"How'd you get her to smile Jamie? She's too young to laugh. She looks like she has a pretty good grip on your finger babe."

Jamie shook his head and gave a slight laugh.

"I don't know. She likes it when I run my finger along her cheek. I have other videos if you want to see them. Pictures too."

Eddie's face lit up as Jamie scrolled through the photos and landed on one that she immediately fell in love with. The nurse Erica must have taken most of them. Ellie was laying against Jamie's uniform shirt as he sat back in the rocking chair with her. He was smiling at the camera. Her smile grew.

"How did you get her to stay so still?"

Jamie rubbed Eddies back and placed a kiss to her forehead.

"She was actually falling asleep when Erica took this. I visited Ellie lots of times. I actually caved after the second day you went to go see her. I'd come after you left. I couldn't get her out of my head either."

Eddie kept the smile on her face and looked back into Jamie's eyes.
"I knew she got to you too. Don't deny it Reagan."
