Strong bonds. It's what Jamie and Eddie had. Not just on a physical level, but spiritual

as well. Jamie sat vigil at Eddie's bedside every day. It had been 28 days and she still

hadn't woken up. Each member of the Reagan family took turns being with Eddie, all

talking to her. Doctor Carson, Eddie's neurologist said that she likely could hear

everything everyone was saying. Speaking to her would help her heal, and hopefully

help her wake up. Henry was currently sitting with Eddie, talking to her.

"Jamie needs you sweet girl. So does Ellie and this new baby. That's why you need to

wake up."

Jamie had just come back into the room. He'd gone down the hall to get coffee and

brought one back for Henry.

"Here you go pop."

Henry looked up at Jamie and spoke.

"She just moved her hand, Jamie."

Jamie sighed and shook his head.

"It's just a reflex. She does that sometimes. I thought that too pop. That her hand

moving meant that she was slowly waking up. The doctor reassured me its just a reflex."

Jamie and Henry turned to Eddie as the machine's she was hooked up to begin to

protest. Jamie saw her eyes open wide and her hand reach for the tubing taped over her

mouth. Placing his hands over Eddie's he shook his head.

"Baby don't do that. Let the machine breathe for you. Relax. I'll go get the doctor."

Henry put a hand on Jamie's shoulder and got up from his chair, exiting the room. Jamie

sat back down and took both of Eddie's hands in his, trying to calm her down. Her eyes

were wild with fear.

"Eddie, honey, its ok. I'm right here. You're alright. You're in the hospital."

Eddie's eyes seemed to roam down to her lower abdomen. Her eyes filled with tears.

Jamie continued his one-sided conversation.

"The baby's just fine. Perfectly healthy."

Jamie watched as Eddie tried to reach for the photo on the bedside stand.

"Ellie is at home. Happy and healthy. Linda is watching her. Everyone has been taking

turns watching her, and before you give me that look, I'll explain: everyone has been

wearing a mask in the apartment and washing their hands. Linda made sure they follow

everything down to the T. I promise."

Eddie felt a tickle in her throat and Jamie could see her coughing. The tube in her throat

was irritating to say the least. She didn't like it. Again, she tried reaching up for it. Jamie

placed his hands on top of hers.

"Ah. The doctor is coming in a minute to take that out. Ok? Until then, just let the

machine breathe for you."

Eddie glared at Jamie and tried to move the covers from over her. She didn't realize

how awkward it was to move her arms and hands around. They felt like lead. Jamie

breathed a sigh of relief as Doctor Carson entered the room.

"Glad to see you awake Eddie. You had your family really worried there for minute. Now

that your awake and breathing on your own, you don't need that tube down your throat

to help you. What we're going to do here is deflate the tiny balloon on the end of the

tubing here, and then I want you to blow out a breath as hard as you can as the nurse

and I pull the tubing out, ok?"

Eddie nodded and coughed as the tubing came out. The coughing fit lasted for what

seemed like a minute before she could finally catch her breath. Doctor Carson listened to

her heart and lungs and gave a slight nod. Eddie tried to speak up.

"W-water…"

Doctor Carson shook his head.

"I want you to whisper for now Eddie. Your voice is going to be pretty hoarse for a little

while. I want you to rest some more. Your throat is going to be sore for a while. I

suggest soft foods for now. Until your throat is better."

Eddie sighed and nodded. Doctor Carson exited the room and it was her and Jamie.

Jamie reached over and poured a glass of water for Eddie, a straw in it so she could

drink. Holding the cup up to her, Jamie watched as she took the straw and slowly started

to drink.

"Better babe?"

Eddie nodded and pushed the cup away.

"Better. No more…"

Setting the cup on the side table, Jamie leaned over the bed and pulled Eddie in for a

kiss. The kiss turned deep for a moment before they broke for air. Then she felt warm

kisses down her neck and to her shoulder, ending with both their heads leaning against

one another.

"You've been in a coma for the last 28 days Eddie. I thought I was going to lose you. I

don't know what I would've done lost you and the baby and I had to raise Ellie alone…"

Eddie looked down at her hands. She didn't know what to say at first. Then a determined

looked crossed her face.

"I'm ok Jamie. I'm here."

A watery smile graced Jamie's lip.

"For the last 28 days, I was your nightwatchman."

Now it was Eddie's turn to smile.

"You've also been my medic. A very handsome medic at that."

A sly smile now replaced the watery one that Jamie had been previously wearing.

"Oh, and when your better? What do I get in return for being your handsome medic?"

Eddie gave her own sly smile and whispered in his ear.

"How about I show you something extra special, when we get home."

Jamie was already liking the sound of where this conversation was going. He'd have to

wait just a little longer to see what she had in store for him. They both had strong

bonds, physically and spiritually. Nothing could separate them.

To Be Continued…

A/N: What do you guys think? Next chapter we'll see Jamie and Eddie bonding with Ellie
