Chapter 17: Nightmares

Eddie whimpered and then moaned. Jamie woke when he heard her talking to someone. His sleep addled brain took a few seconds to figure out what was going on.

"No… Please… Stop… I can't… Hurts too much… Can't push anymore… Jamie… Help me…"

Jamie reached a hand over and smoothed some hair away from her face. It was damp with sweat.

"Eddie, baby wake up. It's ok."

Eddie opened her eyes and was breathing heavily. Jamie pulled her into his arms and whispered into her ear.

"It's alright sweetheart. It was just a nightmare. I'm right here. Just relax and breathe."

But Eddie wasn't having it, her brain was still in panic mode, and half way in the nightmare.

"No. It hurts too much. Help me please. I can't have this baby alone."

Jamie pressed a kiss on the back of her neck.

"Your not going to have this baby alone babe. I'm right here. Right now, I need you to relax. Your not in labor. Not yet. We've still got a little ways to go. Keep breathing. Can you breathe with me? Take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. In and out. Concentrate on the sound of my voice and breathe. Close your eyes babe. Do you feel the rise and fall of my chest? Breathe deep babe. I'm right here. In and out. That's it."

Jamie could feel Eddie shaking in his arms. He'd been reading that pregnancy brought about strange dreams. But the nightmares were something completely new. She'd had several of them a night for the past week. He placed her hands over the swell of her belly and then his own just below them.

"Jamie… I'm scared…"

He'd known this was coming. If he was completely honest with himself, he was scared too.

"I know you are sweetheart. I am too. But you know what? We're in this together. You are so strong. I've watched you throughout this entire pregnancy in awe. You take things in stride. I'd wish the nightmares away if I could. I'm here for you every step of the way."

Eddie nodded but was now worried.

"What if she gets stuck on the way out?"

Jamie shook his head no and kissed the back of her neck again. This letting it deepen. Eddie felt her breath catch in her throat. Moving away from the back of her neck, he rested his chin on her right shoulder and sighed.

"Babe. There are too many variables. We can't focus on what we can't control. Look, I've gone over all the things that could possible go wrong. But my gut tells me it'll be just fine. Now we both read that since this is a first time birth, it can take longer than others afterwards."

Eddie still wasn't convinced. Pulling a large book off her nightstand, she flipped through it until she found what she was looking for.

"What if this happens?"

Jamie looked at the photo carefully and frowned.

"Slim possibility Eddie. Possible. But slim. There hasn't been a case of that in over forty years. Medicine has advanced more than twice since then."

Eddie shook her head and flipped to another page and jabbed her left index finger at another photo.

"What about this one?"

Again, Jamie shook his head and closed his eyes. Opening them, he closed the book.

"Let's put the big book of scary and worry away babe. I want you to relax. I'm going to check on Ellie."

Helping her sit up, he placed a couple of pillows behind her back and then got up. Placing a quick kiss to her forehead he walked out of their bedroom and into the nursery. He smiled as he leaned over the crib and run a hand through Ellie's soft brown hair. Jamie froze when startled herself awake momentarily, but let out a breath when she settled again and closed her eyes.

"Sleep tight baby girl. Sweet dreams."

Quietly padding out of the nursery, Jamie made his way back to the bedroom and found Eddie was wide awake, she had a smile on her face. He gave a small laugh.

"What?"

Eddie shook her head and kept smiling.

"I'm hungry babe. You know what I could really go for right now?"

Jamie gave a small smile and shook his head.

"Eggs and broccoli."

Eddie smiled and nodded more.

"Yup."

Jamie gave a laugh and nodded his own head.

"Why Janko, I do believe that is the healthiest food option yet. Coming right up. Anything else?"

Eddie looked at him sheepishly.

"One of your green smoothies and something else…"

Jamie nodded but stopped in his tracks.

"Yes on the first one, but unfortunately no for the second…"

Eddie frowned and sighed.

"Ok. But hurry up with the food. The baby and I are very hungry."

Jamie shot her a smirk and exited the bedroom and went into the kitchen. As he grabbed for a pan from the cupboard, he whispered out loud.

"Spoiled for life."
