Eddie was sitting in the kitchen feeding Ellie some rice cereal when she heard the lock on the apartment door click. She smiled when she found Linda coming through the door.
"Hey Eddie. Hi Ellie-bug. How's my sweet girl?"
Ellie smiled as Eddie fed her another spoonful of cereal.
"She's doing good. It makes me sad that I can't chase her around the house. Her little legs carry her pretty fast. She's got Jamie chasing her around the couch most nights."
Linda laughed and took her jacket off. Going over to the sink, she washed her hands. Sitting down next to Eddie, she looked her in the eye.
"Eddie. I really need you to take it easy. You really shouldn't be picking Ellie up and putting her down. Here. Let me finish feeding her, you go and relax on the couch. Have you eaten anything this morning?"
Eddie nodded and then frowned.
"Uh Linda? I can't get up. Can you help me?"
Linda nodded and put the spoon back in Ellie's cereal. Helping her up from the chair, Linda helped Eddie walk over to the couch and got her settled.
"Do you want something to drink Eddie?"
Eddie smiled and tilted her head up, listening to Linda's voice.
"Yes please. Can you make me a green smoothie? It's just spinach and apples. It's really good."
Linda gave another laugh.
"Oh. Uh oh. Jamie sold you on some of his healthy stuff didn't he?"
Eddie nodded.
"Unfortunately. It's one of the few healthy things that Jamie and I both like. You've seen him. He eats like a rabbit."
Another laugh escaped from Linda as she finished feeding Ellie.
"I do know that. Your husband eats pretty healthy. Surprisingly for a man his age. Jamie tells me that you like eating broccoli and eggs. He said he tried to get you to eat spinach with eggs. You didn't like it. Can't say I blame you. I don't like them either. I was eating fried eggs with Sean. I don't advise it though. My cholesterol was a little high because of it."
Eddie winced.
"Tried it once. It gave me awful heartburn. Once Ellie is done eating, she usually passes right out and goes to sleep."
Linda finished feeding Ellie and cleaned her up. She was fast asleep by the time Linda took her out of her highchair. Carrying her to her crib, she placed her inside and shut the lights off leaving the door ajar so she could hear her if she started crying. Linda headed back to the living room and sat down on the end of the couch by Eddie's feet. She noticed a confused and pained look on her face.
"Linda something feels different."
Before Linda could ask what was wrong, Eddie pulled up her shirt a little. The two turned when they heard the front door lock click, and in came Jamie. He had a smile on his face, oblivious to what was happening at first.
"I came to see how my girls were doing…"
He trailed off and the smile slid off his face. He saw the worried look on Eddie's face and took two long strides over towards her once he set his jacket down on the kitchen chair.
"Linda what's wrong?"
Linda smirked and shook her head.
"You two have nothing to worry about. This little bump sticking out over here is your daughter's bottom. She's turning and stretching. She's probably pretty cramped up in there now."
Jamie hung his head and gave a nervous laugh.
"Dodged a bullet on that one. I just want her to be healthy."
Linda smiled and squeezed Jamie's shoulder. He was kneeling in front of the couch. Placing a hand over the swell of her belly he rubbed it.
"Your daughter is healthy Jamie. I'd be worried if she wasn't moving around as much. Have the two of you been monitoring how many times she kicks?"
Eddie half snorted.
"She kicks all the time. Linda, how did you get through the last few weeks of pregnancy?"
Linda smiled and squeezed Eddie's hand.
"Lots of rest and massages. Baths help too. I don't suggest you take it alone though. Have Jamie stay with you."
Eddie shot Jamie a look.
"Don't get any ideas mister. I'm not up to that."
Jamie shook his head and placed a kiss to her belly.
"I know babe. I want to make you as comfortable as possible right now. That is what's important."
Eddie pulled her shirt over her belly and sighed.
"Maybe you can help me into the tub when you get home later."
Jamie smiled and kissed her forehead.
"Anything to make you comfortable babe. I want you to rest today. Did you tell Linda what you did yesterday?"
Linda looked at Eddie and listened intently.
"I was on my feet all day yesterday. Moving stuff around in the nursery. Moving the baby's crib around. Moving chairs…"
Linda and Jamie frowned. But the frown was more of concern than disappointment.
"Eddie. It's ok to ask for help. That's why I'm here. You overdid yourself yesterday. Now. What do you need help with?"
Eddie's shoulder relaxed and she nodded.
"Well, there is some laundry to be done. I haven't had the time to do it between trying to take care of Ellie and resting. Jamie does what he can when he's home and some when he gets off work. But things are starting to pile up."
Jamie got to his feet and smiled.
"Good. I'll leave you two ladies be. I'm going to check on Ellie."
Jamie quietly stepped into the nursery and walked over to Ellie's crib. She was fast asleep her arms above her head. Reaching in, Jamie ran a finger against her cheek. She smiled and sighed. Jamie whispered to her.
"Daddy knows how to make you smile. You be good for mommy and Aunt Linda today ok? Daddy will be back later. Daddy has to go put bad guys away."
Turning her star night light on, Jamie left the room. Grabbing his jacket as he reached the door to the apartment, he gave Eddie a smile.
"Sorry to cut and run babe. I just came to check on you ladies. I gotta get back to work. Put away some more bad guys. Eddie listen to Linda. I need you to rest. I love you. I'll see you ladies tonight."
Linda waved him off. She knew he was talking about Eddie and Ellie.
"Don't worry about us Jamie. Ellie and Eddie will be just fine. When Danny gets here, I'll make sure he knows exactly what he needs to do."
Jamie nodded and went through the apartment door and locked up. The rest of the day was spent doing laundry and keeping Ellie entertained. Linda chased her around the couch a few times and fed her. Ellie ate, had another nap, and was changed at least 5 times before Danny arrived.
"Hey. There she is. How you feeling Eddie?"
Eddie shifted uncomfortably on the couch.
"Like a pregnant woman who's annoyed with everyone hovering all the time."
Danny didn't take any offense to Eddie's words.
"You look beautiful. Don't be so hard on yourself. So, what do you need help with?"
Sighing, Eddie took a set of plastic keys on a plastic key ring from Ellie who had one hand holding onto the couch.
"Thank-you sweet girl. Um, there's a load of laundry in the washer over there that needs drying."
The rest of the afternoon went quickly and before either of them knew it, Jamie had come home.
"Hey. I'm home. Where are my girls?"
Danny smiled and looked up as he fixed the pillow behind Eddie's back.
"Hey kid. Your out of popcorn."
Jamie rolled his eyes.
"Guess I'll have to go out and get some more."
Danny smirked.
"Your wife is very stubborn. But I reminded her that you would be very upset if you found out I let her do stuff on her own. She backed down. We sat and watched a couple of movies. She slept through most of the second one."
Eddie punched Danny's arm.
"I did not! I was resting my eyes."
Danny shook his head.
"Ok. But my ears don't lie."
Eddie frowned. That wasn't fair.
