I'm sitting in history class. Mr. Tanner is droning on and on like usual.
"The battle of Willow Creek took place right at the end of the war in our very own Mystic Falls. How many casualties resulted in this battle? Ms. Bennett?" He asks.
"Um... a lot? I'm not sure. Like a whole lot." Bonnie says.
"Cute, becomes dumb in an instant, Ms. Bennett. Mr. Donovan? Would you like to take this opportunity to over come your embedded jock stereotype?" He asks.
"It's okay Mr. Tanner. I'm cool with it." Matt says with a smile. The class laughs. He always did favour the football team.
"Hmm. Miss Gilbert? Surely you can enlighten us about one of the town's most significant historical events. Elena?" He asks.
"I'm sorry. I- I don't know. " she says. I roll my eyes.
"I was willing to be lenient last year for obvious reasons, Elena. But the personal excuses ended with summer break." He says.
"I'm pretty sure my parents dying isn't just a personal excuse." I spit at him pissed off. "The number your looking for is 346 and 27 civilians."
"346 is correct, but their were no civilian casualties in this battle." He tells me trying to win this argument. I scoff.
"There were." Stefan says defending me. I smile at him.
"You are?" Tanner asks like the douche he is.
"Stefan Salvatore," he says to him. A lot nicer tone then I would have taken.
"Salvatore, any relation to the original settlers here at Mystic Falls?" Tanner asks.
"Distant," Stefan replies
"Of course, there were no civilian casualties in this battle." Tanner says getting back to topic.
"Actually, Evelyn is right. There were 27, sir. Confederate soldiers fired on the church, believing it to be housing weapons. They were wrong. It was a night of great loss. The founder's archives are, uh, stored in civil hall. If you'd like to brush up on your facts, Mr. Tanner." Stefan comes back with.
"Hmmm." Is all Mr. Tanner says.
I know he is steaming mad at Stefan. The bell rings and I walk over to Stefan.
"Thanks for having me back." I thank.
"No problem, you were after all right." He says. "Can I ask you a really personal question?"
"I guess," I reply hesitantly.
"Is Blaise's father in his life?" He asks. I'm surprised.
"That is a personal question. Um, no. He isn't. I was drinking at a party, so I don't remember him. All I know is Blaise must look like him because he looks nothing like me." I tell him. "Why?"
"He looks like someone I know," he replies.
"Oh, well, the likely hood of him being Blaise's father is slim. So, I wouldn't worry." I say.
The day goes quickly, and I go pick up Blaise. Aunt Jenna agreed to babysit while I'm at the party. I head back to the house and feed Blaise. I grab a few water bottles for me to drink at the party. Bonnie said she will drive. So, I wait for her to pick me up. We arrive at the party. I wonder off for a bit. Then wonder back.
"Just admit it, Elena." Bonnie says.
"Oh, okay, so he's a little pretty." Elena gives in.
"He has that romance novel stare." Bonnie tells her.
"Who does?" I finally ask.
"Stefan," Bonnie replies.
"Didn't Caroline call dibs?" I ask confused.
"This isn't first grade Evie," Elena says with a roll of her eyes.
"Sure, but it seems respectful to back off." I say.
"So, where is he?" Bonnie asks her.
"I don't know. You tell me, you're the psychic one." Elena replies.
"Right, I forgot. Okay, give me a sec. Grams says I have to concentrate." Bonnie tells us. I roll my eyes.
"Wait, you need a crystal ball." Elena says handing her and empty beer bottle. Bonnie goes to take it and completely spaces out. "What?"
"That was weird. When I touched you, I saw a crow." Bonnie says freaked out. I give her a funny look.
"What?" Elena asks again.
"A crow. There was fog, a man. I'm drunk. It's the drinking. There's nothing psychic about it. Yeah? Okay. I'm gonna get a refill." Bonnie admits.
"I'll come with." I say seeing Stefan walking up to my sister.
After Bonnie gets another drink, I go join Tyler. He offers me a bottle and I shake my head.
"It's sparkling juice. Don't worry. I know you still have to feed Blaise." He says offering me the bottle again. I take it. "I brought them for you to fit in better."
"Thanks Ty." I reply giving him a hug and taking a swing. "Cherry!" I squeal.
"Yeah, it's your favourite." He replies with a smile. We hang out for a little while just walking around, talking about life.
"Somebody help!" I hear my twin call. I run over to her and see Vicki.
"Vicki? Vicki, what the hell?!" Matt exclaims in a panic.
"What happened to her?" Ty asks.
"Somebody call an ambulance," Matt orders.
"Everybody back up!" Ty exclaims. "Give her some space."
I just stand beside Ty, so I don't get lost in the shuffle. After Vicki gets taken away by the ambulance I head over to Bonnie and Elena.
"Hey, we're gonna go to Main line coffee, wait for news." Bonnie says.
"I gotta take Jeremy home," Elena tells us.
"I'll met you there after I see Elena and Jer off," I say to Bonnie.
"Elena, Evie, there's no way I'm psychic. I know that. But whatever I saw or I think I saw. I have this feeling…" Bonnie trials off. I know it's a bad thing.
"Bonnie what?" Elena asks.
"That it's just the beginning." Bonnie says.
"Whatever it is we will get through it." I say with conviction.
I head with Elena to find Jeremy. We find him drinking a beer.
"You okay? I called Jenna. She's on her way." Elena says. Jer shrugs. I can tell he's a little lost. "Those people in uniforms last time I checked, they're the police. People are going to stop giving you breaks Jer. They just don't care anymore. They don't remember that our parents are dead because they've got their own lives to deal with. The rest of the world has moved on. You should try too."
I give her a what the fuck look. "Do you know how to move on, Elena? Because if you do I'm all ears." I say to her pissed that she could say something like that to our little brother.
"Well, you've got it all figured out, Evie. Why don't you tell us?" She says.
"No, she doesn't. She has never claimed to either. She's just doing what she always does and is there for literally everyone but herself. Thank god for Tyler I may hate the guy, but he has been there for Evie everyday and night no matter what I do to him. Tyler spends almost every night over, so she doesn't have to feel alone. I've seen you in the cemetery writing in your diary. Is that- is that supposed to be you moving on?" Jer says to her pissed defending me.
"Mom and dad wouldn't have wanted this," Elena says like she has a right.
"Well, mom and dad aren't here and as much as you pretend to be them you never will be." I say annoyed by her preaching. I turn to Jer and my face softens. "Jer, you remember when Liz got a divorce from Bill. I spent months at Caroline's house helping her feel better. Her first visit to her dad's I went with her, so she had a friend. From what I understand it won't feel great, but we will move on. Not forget it will always hurt but we will learn to live with the pain."
Jenna pulls up and my sleeping boy is in the back seat with her. I give him a kiss then head to the grill.
"Are you sober, yet?" Bonnie asks Caroline as I walk up.
"No," Care replies.
"Keep drinking. I gotta get you home. I gotta get me home." Bonnie says as I sit down with them.
"Why didn't you guys have me drive? We knew I wouldn't be drinking. I can't drink because of Blaise." I say.
"Because that would have been smart, and we aren't that smart." Bonnie says with a groan.
"Why didn't he go for me? You know. How some the guys that I want never want me?" Care asks us.
"I'm not touching that," Bonnie says. I shake my head when she looks at me.
"I'm inappropriate. I always say the wrong thing. And… Elena always says the right thing. She doesn't even try, and he just picks her. And she's always the one the everyone picks, for everything. And I try so hard, and … I'm never the one." Care says looking deflated.
"It's not a competition, Caroline," Bonnie says.
"Yeah, it is." She says.
"Care, it's really not. Especially if only one of you is competing. So what? Stefan didn't like you, big deal. Elena isn't every guys happily ever after. You saw what she did to Matt. You will find a man who only wants you. You may not think he's the right man for you, but he will offer you the world. So, pick yourself up and dust yourself off. You got a man to find." I say trying to pep her up.
"You're right," she says.
Bonnie heads to the washroom a little while later. I look up and see Caroline smiling at something. I look at where she is looking and find it's someone. Oh my god! He looks like an older version of Blaise. The exact same blue eyes and black hair. I can tell the smile that he's giving Caroline is fake. Blaise does the exact same one when he's unhappy with something. He gets up and leaves before Bonnie comes back.
"Ready to go?" She asks us.
"More then ready." I say anxious to get back to my Blaise especially after seeing that guy.
"Yeah, sure," Care says a little less enthusiastically.
I wake up a few mornings later and feed Blaise. I dress him then head downstairs. Elena is right behind me.
"Do I look like an adult? As in respectfully parental." Jenna asks.
"Depends on where your going." Elena says.
I put Blaise in his highchair and hand him a spoon. He starts banging away on the tray.
"Jeremy's parent-teacher conference. Hair up or down?" She asks us. She puts it up to show us.
"Sexy Stewardess," Elena says. Jenna puts her hair down.
"Boozy housewife," I comment.
"Up it is. You two are feisty today," Jenna comments.
"I feel good, which is rare. So, I've decided to go with it. Fly free, walk on sunshine, and all that stuff." Elena says.
"I'm always feisty." I point out with a laugh.
"Where's Jeremy?" Elena asks. I sigh and roll my eyes. Great she wants to parent him again.
"He left early. Something about getting to woodshop early to finish a bird house," Jenna says. Elena and I both give her a look that says what are you talking about. "There's no wood shop, is there?"
"No," Elena confirms.
"Yeah," Jenna says walking off.
"You know he probably went to see Vicki, right?" I point out.
"I guess he could have." She says with a sigh.
We both head to school. I arrive after I drop Blaise off. The day goes by quickly. The teachers all bring up the comet. After school I go pick up Blaise and head to the Mystic Grill. I meet Bonnie, Caroline, and Elena there."
"Well, I was talking to grams and she said the comet is a sign of impending doom. The last time it passed over Mystic Falls, there was lots of death. So much blood and carnage, it created a bed of paranormal activity." Bonnie tells us.
"Yeah, and then you poured Grams another shot and she told you about the aliens. So, then what?" Care asks my sister.
"So, then nothing." Elena says.
"You and Stefan walked all night? There was no sloppy first kiss or touchy feely of any kind?" Care asks shocked.
"Nope. We didn't go there." Elena says.
"You realize I was pregnant last year because of touchy feely?" I say to Care.
"Yeah, but Blaise is so adorable and worth it." she says to me. She turns back to Elena. "Not even a handshake? I mean, Elena we are your friends. Okay? You are supposed to share the smut."
"We just talked for hours." Elena stresses.
"Okay, what's the blockage? Just jump his bones already! Okay, it's easy. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, sex!" Care exclaims.
"Profound," Elena says. She gets up.
"Where are you going?" Bonnie asks.
"Caroline's right. It is easy. If I sit here long enough, I'll end up talking myself out of it. Instead of doing what I started the day saying what I was going to do." Elena tells us.
"Use a condom," I say. "Actually, maybe, I should come with you. Cause you don't even have his number."
"Fine, you can come." She says.
We head to the Salvatore boarding house. Elena knocks on the front door. It opens and we walk in. Blaise starts cooing so I look down at him.
"Stefan? Stefan?" Elena calls out.
A crow flies into the house. We turn around to see the guy from the grill. I look at Blaise then at him and see the resemblance is uncanny. He gives Blaise a look of shock. Blaise just continues to coo at my in my arms.
