A/N : Back with Chapter 3 where our dear Raven wakes up and proceeds to kill everyone in the academy...i'm joking.
Quite frankly i have an idea on how things will go. I have an initial plan that changes as i go along.
Recently i read an IS fic called an uncertain pilot which gave me some perspective on the nature and portrayal of in show relationships between Orimura junior and his harem of slug brains...which is why the idea of the Raven acting as a security measure still stands...how well i will implement it remains to be seen.
Regarding combat scenarios. XA-26483 like most raven's is skill wise quite far ahead of any IS pilot with a few exceptions. Years of training, experience and the surrounding circumstances demand that.
The students and most IS pilot we see in both anime and novel rely far too much on having the better equipment and are generally incapable of performing at the level that's required of them.
Even representatives who are supposedly the best of them are mediocre at best. Treating their machines like glorified toys.
Think Of AC4...Lynx pilots rely on their psychic abilities and superior craft to get the job done.
And are soundly beaten by your character who is a former raven...meaning skill and training along with instincts make a very sound difference at that level of combat.
But i digress... let's dive back in shall we?
Three months have passed since the unknown boy and the five IS? units have made their appearance in the academy and the world in general.
And what have the esteemed IS Academy staff managed to learn about the boy and the mech suits? Almost nothing at all.
Since there was still a few weeks before the semester started, most of the staff was on vacation and would return a few days before it starts to handle preparations and last minute checks.
For the units themselves they had uncovered nothing that Maya Yamada hasn't learned from her initial attempt and the encryption codes have been altered twice since then...which was odd considering they were inactive.
Capabilities regarding both mobility and combat wise were unknown. Chifuyu Orimura presented a general theory that holds merit based on appearance but further information is unobtainable.
Engineering staff was debating about that...whether it was of Alien design or simply AI controlled. Both theories were shot down.
After seeing the kid who aside from the enhancements was very much human.
And the latter because Artificial intelligence technology hasn't advanced that much to have such an ability to function.
Regarding the boy itself...they were even more stumped. Aside from a pair of blood and oxygen pumps placed right below the lungs and the prosthesis they had no idea as to the other implants.
They had taken the measure to house him in a small four by five meter chamber. A way to keep him isolated from the rest of the Academy, ensuring no one's in danger and tend to him at the same time
Just enough space for the bed, the electric sensors and two or three members of the medical staff to move around.
There was only one nurse currently in active duty and for the first time in her career she found herself running ragged.
Her full name was Mèng yáo Leung. A woman of Chinese nationality, she graduated from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, her degrees and qualifications being enough to give her a job at IS Academy. A job she took as seriously as possible.
At 31 years old she was a beautiful woman sharing the typical south east Asian appearance.
Slightly longer then shoulder length black hair tied into a bun and brown eyes, a somewhat flat face with the cheekbones being a bit high and slightly wider. Thin pink lips and a height of 165cm.
She wore a nurse uniform consisting of a typical blue nurse hat, a long short sleeved button up shirt, blue trousers and white shoes.
And right now she was ready to start pulling her hair. The reason for that was lying in a bed in front of her.
Medical scans revealed a layer of carbon nanotube fiber interlaced with the muscle fibers. Bones have increased density and have been coated with coltan-titanium alloy.
Not only that but multiple internal cybernetic augmentations were found throughout his entire body. They did their best not to do anything that would trigger a malfunction that would result in the child dying.
Base temperature was 39.4 degrees Celsius, which seemed normal so that meant much higher metabolism then normal people, most likely the implants.
Resting heart rate was 80 beats per minute and the heartbeat was also louder then normal.
They have also traced an unknown agent in the boy's bloodstream that allows for higher and faster oxygen flow.
Other then that, the nurse who was mainly charged with monitoring him found two items after removing the armored suit, which was a mystery in itself. The first was a pair of dog-tags that read:
Raven rank: A
Designated call-sign: Griever
Serial number: XA-26483
blood type: O
Aside from the 'Raven rank' which neither she or the others had any clue what it meant, everything else pointed towards the boy being a soldier...or at least have a military background.
The blood type meant they wouldn't have to test him for it or for antibodies which saved sometime.
They took a sample of the skin covering his prosthetic and sent it to the mainland, and asked for someone who specializes in the cybernetics field to hopefully treat him more efficiently.
They also found three slots on his right hand, they line up over his veins and have a match with medical needles used for transfusions and IV drips so they hooked him up as soon as they admitted him.
The second item was a photo. It had a few drops of dried blood on the edges but thankfully everything depicted was clearly visible. Ten individuals were standing in armored suits of different colors and similar to the boy's in front of a metallic grey wall.
A glowing sign that read 'Global Cortex the nest for Ravens' hung on the wall a few feet above them. All individuals looked to be in their late 20's to early 30's and held their helmets at their side. All of them had an expression of focus and complete neutrality as if it was natural for them.
Two individuals stood out however: The first was a woman near her thirties. Shoulder length dark hair with a slight red tint swept over one side, medium build and a stern expression similiar to ms. Orimura's. The second however? A young man that looked just like the boy resting right on the bed next to her. The suit and appearance matched.
The age however was off...the man looked to be at least 28 years old if not older yet the boy looked to be about 17 to 19 if the analysis is right. He and the woman shared a decent enough resemblance to call them siblings. He had family out there?
Just as she changed the young man's bandages she was called to the principal's office for a preliminary report.
"Rest well, we'll make sure you're in good health" she said to the unconscious patient leaving the photo and the dog-tags on the table at his side and left. Had she stayed a few more seconds she would have seen the boy stirring awake.
There were a few seconds of stirrings before he woke up with a start...he couldn't see. He didn't know whether his eyes were covered or non-functional.
His felt his hands were bound. Metal around the wrists. He couldn't move, he could barely feel anything..what was happening? He kept trying to move his fingers and toes...they were unresponsive, as if completely numb. He didn't give up though and slowly he could feel movement.
He didn't know how much time had passed before he could fully move the digits. He began trying to move the rest of his body...it took a bit more time but he was able to wiggle around.
He moved his fingers around, feeling soft fabric covering everything, including him. He was laying in a soft mattress. A bed. Towards the outside he felt metal. As he continued to regain his sense of touch he felt things...stuck on his arms. There was something poking in his right arm, on the elbow joint. Something was stuck on his head as well...
He started panicking when he heard small chains rattling on his wrists...he was still bound.
There was a warmness around him. He tried to use his nose but found it difficult. There was almost no smell, the air was sterile and felt slightly damp.
He tried to listen for anything. There was a whirring noise above him and a steady beeping at his right side.
Suddenly he heard light footsteps. In desperation he tried to move his eyelids and slowly felt them brush something. So they were covered. As quickly as he could he closed them.
There was a voice around him "I'm sorry i left you alone, the principal wanted to know how you were." He couldn't really make out the words but the voice was definitely female. The smooth and slightly deep voice meant she was of a decent age. She had an accent he couldn't recognize.
But to him that didn't matter much. Who or what was a principal and what exactly did they want from him?
"Three months and you're still in a coma... hopefully you will wake up. It'd be a shame to waste such a long life" Three months...he was in this state for...three months? How long was that? Why was that, why was he in this state?
He dared not move, lest they find out. This place was not familiar...nor were the voices and people as far as he knew. He needed to get out...he needed to find...who? His mind tried to draw an image. Faces that were important to him...faces that...what were they, where were they? Who were they?
"Well, it's getting late. I still need to take inventory and keep the rest of the faculty notified on your progress. At this rate you might make the first day. Make sure you get some sleep." He heard her chuckle at that last remark, she got up from whatever she was seating in front of his bed. He heard her take a few steps and then slide something twice before the sound of her faded away.
The tone of her voice suggested she cared about his well-being, could also be a front for another agenda. She said keep the faculty notified on his progress. That he might recover fast enough to make the first day. First day for what? And his recovery rate? Was he healing fast?
Suddenly his vision changed...
Flashback...year 0720 A.G.D. Time: 18:30...location: Crest Industries, LAWDAS surface-based weapons factory...what was this?
Instead of the darkness he was looking at a quintet of monitors...buttons and switches around him. Concrete Foundation, bridges connecting the landing platforms to a small building in the center acting as an elevator to the underground factory. Main screen had a HUD depicting various information about...whatever he was in.
He was holding in his right...no the robot he was piloting was holding a really large gun with what looked to be the magazine right above the handle and the trigger and shot blue lasers and created small explosions on impact. Two small...things hovered over him shooting small green lasers as well. He was flying all around trying to avoid missiles and lasers and rockets. There were red lasers targeting the ground before huge blue beams crashed down, decimating the area. The whole place was bombarded.
He accidentally strafed into one and his craft got blasted...AP 3186/8952, Laser rifle ammo 14/50, EO ammo recharging 26/50...what was all this? What was he doing, where was he? He saw a pair of trucks sitting near the edge and rushed there. Repair and resupply before the sounds of boosters threw him back in.
"Raven, unidentified target detected. Enemy forces withdrawing...finish off those you can" He heard the 'dispatcher say through his comms'
I want to wake up. Please i don't want to see, I DON"T WANT TO DIE...he screamed in his head. The beeping at his side got faster and louder but he didn't hear that.
All he heard and saw were sounds of battle. An alarm sounding around him, machines walking, hovering and firing at him, the beams slamming down into the ground...the enormous white behemoth chasing him and firing after him. He fired back, trading shots. As it stopped moving it fired the large cannon it held, taking a chance he rushed in..he took two out of the five energy blasts head on before his left hand, which had some sort of weapon mounted on the forearm lashed out. and a large, thick blue laser blade activated. He lashed out twice, taking advantage of staggering the monstrosity before backing up and firing three more times. The machine blew up and he flew around taking down the stragglers.
He heard his radio crackle "I can't believe you made it out! That was some great piloting." followed by a monotone, robotic female voice saying "Mission, complete. System switched to normal mode.."
Flashback end...
Mèng Yáo rushed in the moment the alarm in the patient's room went off...as she opened the door she saw the heart monitor showing erratic movement...the boy's brain activity was all over the place as well. He was going into shock...she began to administer 1mg of epinephrine to him. He was shaking around like mad, trying desperately to free his hands...thankfully he wasn't moving much on account that his muscles have atrophied and the fact the he hasn't moved ever since they found him.
She went to the side of the room and pressed an alarm button. She was the only of the nursing staff right now but most teachers had basic first aid education and could help her stabilize him. She saw Chifuyu and two others come running, looks of confusion on all of them.
Chifuyu being the first to arrive saw the situation "What the heck's going on with him?" up until now there were no complications aside from how to make sure how to treat him. No incidents or anything. So what changed now?
"He's going into shock, help me stabilize him!" And it was worse. His heartbeat was nearly about to stop. So they each did their part...as the nurse got ready for CPR, Chifuyu added an extra dose of epinephrine to his IV and the other teacher lifted his legs using a pillow. Chifuyu then started trying to hold the boy still, a task easier said then done with his spastic movements.
His left arm then broke free of its cuff and started swinging. They backed away so as to not get swatted by the offending limb and with a bit more effort both Chifuyu and the other member managed to get him still.
Mèng Yáo then put both her hands over the boy's chest and after interlacing her fingers began rapidly pressing down, making sure to keep a pace and let the chest return back to it's position every time. She found it hard to do so due to the patient's physiology. After hitting 40 and seeing no reaction she tilted his head backwards to open the airways and allow him to breathe easier.
Still nothing and his heart rate was slowly going still. She pinched his nose shut and used her mouth to create a seal over his...and began to breathe down. Nothing...she repeated the process twice before the monitor started a steady beep and a flat line appeared on it. "Quick get the defibrillator" she shouted and they rolled the device over to her.
She began charging it to 200V..."CLEAR" and she pressed the paddles down on his chest. His body jolted upwards a bit but there was no other reaction. She charged it to 400V and tried again...to no avail. The nurse tried twice more increasing the voltage up to 800V but the line never changed.
She let the device back on its shelf and sat on her stool, shoulders slumped in defeat...why? Why did this boy have to give up? He was young enough to have the world ahead of him. And he was an IS pilot to boot...a male IS pilot! He could have made history had he fought just a little more...
Chifuyu simply let her head drop and tensed her shoulders in defeat. The guy may not have looked like her and her brother but all evidence pointed to her theory being true: He was built to be a weapon, just like her. His sister too if the photograph was anything to go by
His face and DNA wasn't found anywhere and the extensive modifications he and the others in that picture seemingly underwent would never be accepted or sanctioned by any government that could have understood what it would bring.
Whatever this 'Global Cortex' was, they sounded very similar to the ones responsible for making her.
And she hated that. Unlike her who was tasked with being the perfect human he along with the rest were tasked with being the ultimate weapons. Their purpose was far worse...she at least met with Tabane and could start a new life for her and Ichika.
But the kid? This 'XA-26483' and what looked like his sister? They never even bothered to give them a name! Just a call sign and a goddamn serial number! How many other 'experiments' did they make before these two and the other eight? How many lives did they create and destroy before they were satisfied...
She walked over to the Chinese doctor and laid a hand on her shoulder "We did the best we could...you did the best. There was nothing else that could be done" she tried to console her.
Turning to the other teacher "Ms. Yamamoto, could you please report this to the principal and the rest of the staff?" she asked her.
She wanted to try and console the nurse who spent all this time to try and help this guy.
Whoever created him, they called him 'Griever'...she along with all others involved, they would grieve for him and Chifuyu herself would make sure to remember him.
His units would be locked away or even buried in secret with him. His enhancements aside he was able to bond with five IS's...a feat that she could guarantee would never be replicated ever in history.
And with what she heard from the tech's their bond was strong enough to alter their own encryption codes even in their inactive state to make sure no one else could access them. That spoke volumes of the time he devoted to using them.
Just as the two teacher were getting ready to leave the heart monitor ceased its flat-line and made a small and quiet beep...what?
"Look... that's..." Mèng Yáo whispered and all three of them saw it. A pulse on the heart monitor...how was this possible?
Another small beep...he wasn't gone just yet. "Come on, come on you little shit. Keep fighting...come back" Chifuyu quietly urged him on, rooted for him.
They saw his body jolt and heard a sound akin to a defibrillator going off...he had a defibrillator built in there?!
Twice more it went off with a few seconds gap between jolts and it produced the result they all hoped for as he let out a hoarse wheeze and his heart rate returned to normal.
He was again asleep...but he was stable
They immediately set about to keep him stable. Putting an oxygen mask and upping the flow from the tank to ensure he can breathe easier, they kept his feet elevated and put up a new IV drip to keep him stable.
And for the first time in a while Chifuyu started getting teary. "You had us for a moment there you little idiot...when you wake up I'll make sure to pay you back for that" she warned the unconscious adolescent and left the room with the other teacher in tow.
Mèng Yáo for her part tried to calm herself...maybe he unconsciously heard and made one last effort? Maybe whoever was up there listened to their plea?
Either way all it mattered was that he was alive and on his way to recovery. She set about re-cuffing his arm...she may have been happy for him but she was worried enough for both his and her own safety.
"Thank you for fighting... you'll see. You still have a life to live. And the academy will be there to help you every step" She said to him and left for the cafeteria...she needed both fold and a tea to recover from this episode.
Of course just like before she had just missed the boy waking up once again...timing issues.
He was startled awake...once whatever he was seeing ended all he could see around him was a faint light...he was hearing voices around him but they were faint and sounded really distorted, he couldn't understand a word of what they said...all that mattered was the light.
He could finally be with...who...exactly would he be with? Names and faces escaped him every time he tried to recall them...
He tried walking towards the light but his feet wouldn't respond. And just as fast he sunk into darkness again.
He suddenly woke up again. His eyes opened to the same blackness...there was...something different..this time. He could feel something on his face...covering his nose and mouth.
He could breathe normally if slowly...but he was breathing nonetheless. He tried moving his hands, only his left one responded but it felt really heavy.
Trying to think was difficult, his thoughts slipping away, creeping like rats. He felt like there were pins and needles all over his body...except his left hand...why was that? It wasn't as numb but if felt too heavy. He tried rotating his hand so as to grasp the chain that linked the cuff to the rail.
Weakly pulling at it to try and break the chain, he didn't notice that his hand was slowly crushing the chain. When he heard the audible 'clack' he flinched, thinking something went wrong he pulls tries to pull his hand away...only to move it much further then he thought he could...he broke his binding...how?
He'd find out later...slowly he traced his hand upwards towards his face and felt around the mask...it was held with strings around his ears...he traced the one on his left ear and slowly got it off of him and took the mask off entirely since the right side had no tension to stay on.
He simply let it fall from his hands, landing on his stomach...he then uses his hand to feel around his eyes...carefully so as to not cause any damage...he felt the fabric brush on his hand...cloth bandage...tied around his head.
I got to get out of here...wherever here is he said in his head as he tried to free his eyesight
At the teacher's lounge were the principal, Chifuyu, Yamamoto and Mèng Yáo.
There was a stillness in the air, a very tense atmosphere owed to the incident that took place just twenty minutes ago at the infirmary.
They were all quiet...and who could blane them? These past few months had been one giant headache. First with maintenance going slower and then being interrupted, courtesy of the biggest mystery since the disappearance of the first IS.
Chifuyu's brother having been proven able to pilot a machine designed to be piloted exclusively by females was a miracle in and of itself, which was why he was coming here in three weeks along with everyone else to start the year and his new life.
But this...this boy was nothing else if not a major anomaly. A loophole in the system. His unexplainable appearance in the academy aside, there was no feasible answer, no logical reason for him to be able to pilot one let alone five of these machines.
And all five of them were coded to him, to the point of bio metric ID lock and constantly changing security codes. Something unheard of regarding Tabane's masterpieces...and as it stands they seem to not be any of her's in the first place...which begs the question.
Who made those units? Not only did they look incredibly advanced, the extra parts seem to not be encumbering the suits in any way...but how much performance does extract to not only need an extra generator and a heat radiator?
And then the pilot...a multitude of genetic and physical enhancements, not to mention cybernetic augmentations including a built in defibrillator...he was one surprise after another.
Principal Nomina decided to break the silence "So... since no one else will refer to the elephant in the room i'll go first: What are we to do with..." She searched for a word to refer to him other then boy, male or patient...she settled for his alleged call sign "Griever..?" the name felt weird to her...why call him that?
Did he grieve for something or someone? Was it a joke?
Ms. Yamada took the reigns "We can't keep him here can we?" she said in a timid manner " We have no idea of his origins and he looks to old to be enrolled" And she was right. By what they could find the boy was anywhere between 19 and 22...to old to be in a high school by regular standards.
Chifuyu gave her own opinion "We can't just throw him out either...his capabilities along with any assets he posseses won't take much for any government or outside party to take notice. And they will all be gunning for him the moment his presence and value is made known" And that's not even including groups like the ones that made her and Ichika.
There will be bloodshed to get to him. Ms. Yamamoto though didn't agree "But the international treaty prevents IS usage for military purposes. The fallout will be too costly for them to do that, which was true...at least partially.
The nurse seemed to realize that "You're right...if it was just about the IS's. What about the pilot? You don't throw that amount of resources into someone just for data gathering. The boy was made for combat...in any and all conditions. Whoever modified him wanted to have a soldier that could take any assignment in any scenario, not just open warfare and succeed no matter the cost"
And that was true...depending on what kind of training he underwent he could take part in anything from wet work, espionage, assassinations, black ops, guerilla warfare, urban combat and the list goes on.
Principal Nomina sighed at their reasoning and gave it some thought. They couldn't keep him here because outside of the IS units they had nothing on him. Every search they made on him and the names they found came up empty.
At the same time they couldn't just leave him on his own because the damage that could be caused was horrendous at the very least.
So making up her mind she made her decision vocal "Enrollment it is then..."gasps, two looks of shock and a heavy frown were her answer.
"Principal you can't really mean that" Yamamoto tried to reason..."We have no idea how dangerous he is. What about the student's? One wrong move and there's no telling what might happen!" They knew full well what could happen.
But if what Chifuyu told her privately holds any merit and it usually does quite a bit then "We should be fine Kaori...besides there is still time to-" Whatever she was about to say died on her tongue the moment the alarm at Mèng Yáo's pocket went off.
"Bring up the surveillance quick!" The large monitor at the wall on their right lit up and it broadcasted the footage from the camera in the patient's room. And shock couldn't even begin to describe what they were all feeling yet alone thinking.
Not only had the boy awakened...he had torn off the sensors from his head and arms, he had also taken out the IV needle and the bandages off his head and was attempting to get out of his bed!
She turned to her staff "Get over there immediately and restrain him! He's as much of a danger to himself as any of us! I'll keep watching and notify you" And just like that they burst out of the door and bolted towards the infirmary.
He had finally managed to get the bandages covering his head off and as soon as he opened his eyes he was assaulted with the harsh lights shining right above him...putting his free arm up to shield them, he slowly opened up again and his sight began adjusting...
In the time that had passed since the women left...and he could have swore one of them was ready to kill him he exercised a bit more and started regaining movement in his head and arms... he'd have to see about his legs.
He tore off the cables on his arm and head and hissed a little when he took some of his hair with them. That made the monitors start beeping wildly...he didn't care for that. Had he paid attention he would've seen the silent alarm in the wall in front of his bed go off.
Grabbing his legs and swinging them over the bed he felt them touch the floor...instead of cold marble he felt warmth. As he went to stand he lost his balance and fell down just as fast..."No...no no..no" the word came out in hoarse whispering...but his desperation was still palpable...he couldn't walk.
He began crawling with agonizing slowness towards the door when his sight began being bombarded...words, numbers charts...rows and rows of data. He couldn't handle it...so he shut his eyes and screamed for all he could clutching his head...the sound that came out was hollow and silent as he could barely breathe...
/Sentinel Rx implant, fully active
/HeartSine samaritan PAD 840P Fully Automatic Defibrillator on standby
/Infolink telecommunications package online
/Mirage patterned M12 memory processor active
/Implanted Re-breather active.
/Cybernetic arm prosthesis fully functional
/Armiger reflex system, under repair
/Optical and retinal prosthesis at 90%, undergoing repair
/Wayfinder advanced radar system, rebooting...no data available.
-Mnemonic Recovery incomplete...process at 76%
/Gransys systems audio receiver and recorder, rebooting
And a lot more similar phrases appeared and disappeared in front of his eyes...he didn't notice the three women who nearly stepped on him as they rushed through the door.
"Get him back onto the bed...try to keep him still. He needs to be sedated..." No...he was not going back in the dark. He swung his left arm and hit nothing but air...swinging back however he was sure he hit something if the grunt he heard was any indication.
He couldn't do much more before a syringe went into one of the holes in his right bicep...
He felt dizzy...tired "No...get me out...please" he tried to fight for a minute more before the last word came out faintly as he drifted into unconsciousness once again...
Chifuyu hissed at the pain...that prosthetic had caught her at the ribs and she didn't expect the boy to be able to swing with that much momentum so soon.
As they managed to lift him back on the bed and cuff him once more...this time using titanium cuffs since nickel steel alloy was too easy for him to break, the nurse gave her a painkiller for her trouble. They also applied another wrap of bandages around his head and eyes.
"He couldn't be able to move at all if he had just woken up. Didn't you see anything Leung?" She asked the nurse who shook her head in denial.
"I've been going nuts staying around him all this time and not once has he woken up or moved while i was here." And she was saying the truth. She'd been with him nearly every second of every day, fussing over him and working to see if she could uncover anything.
"It must've started recently. Otherwise he'd be much more lucid and in better physical condition." She reasoned. There was no other explanation. She received agreeing nods by the other two women.
"That was some strong stuff you used to sedate him. What did you give him?" Yamamoto asked.
Mèng Yáo raised the syringe "A triple dose of Fentanyl. Much more potent and much faster acting then anything in its class when delivered intravenously." And wasn't that the truth. a regular dose can put someone under almost instantly. Yet a triple dose was administered and he still tried to fight it.
"So what now? We wait till he wakes up and start the questions?" Yamamoto asked.
She heard Chifuyu confirm as she worked to reattach the sensors to the boy.
"Hope you got a coffee pot cause we're gonna stay here a while" Orimura told her...and she groaned at the course of action.
A/N: And that's it for now... hopefully i did my idea justice and didn't screw this up.
I was gonna go for a more Hollywood recovery where he slowly woke up...alone and went to a bathroom and see himself on a mirror...suffering from temporary amnesia.
However a friend told me to watch a kill bill hospital scene and take a more 'realistic ' approach on this...as realistic as possible anyway.
I also took inspiration from the start of the cyprus hospital act in MGSV the phantom pain.
Next chapter will be where introductions are made and the Raven will finally take controls in his body.
Initially i planned to ship him with Eclair but this felt more appealing to me. I will have a relationship for our dear mercenary but that will come later...
Till then? I'll be seeing you all.
