The next morning Sonic woke up to a delicious smell. He shot up and saw Miles cooking eggs over the fire.

"Morning. Do you want some breakfast?"

"You bet.". Sonic said excitedly. He looked over the fire and saw them scrambled.

"I hope you like them scrambled since that is all I know how to do." Miles chuckled nervously.

"I do. Thanks."

Miles was happy and finished cooking. He then served the food and they ate in peace. Sonic however finished too fast.

"Alright! Let's go.". He said getting ready to run off.

Miles froze mid-bite and looked at Sonic with confusion. Sonic saw this and said, "oh after you're done. Sorry."

Tails then continued to eat. After a few minutes, he finished and Sonic once again was ready to go.

"Alright. You ready?" Sonic was super pumped and couldn't wait to get the day started.

Miles looked really uncertain but said, "I-i think so."

Sonic could tell the fox was nervous since he didn't know who they would run into. He walked up to Miles, patted his back, and said full of confidence. "Don't worry. I got your back. I promise."

Miles was not so sure but it did seem to cheer him up a bit. "Ok. Let's go."

"Alright. Where too?". Sonic asked.

Miles pointed into the forest and Sonic got hyped. He grabbed onto Miles' wrist without thinking and began running at full speed much to Miles' shock and fear.

Mile's instantly started yelling and Sonic came to a halt. He let go of Miles who dropped to his knees in relief while also trying to catch his breath. The sudden speed knocked the wind out of him.

"Sorry. We can go at your pace.". Sonic said, chuckling to himself. Miles was still catching his breath and gave him a thumbs up in agreement.

After a minute of Miles calming down the two set off for somewhere again. Miles never actually said where they were going but Sonic had no reason to doubt him so he just followed. After what seemed like forever Sonic was actually beginning to get impatient.

"Are we there yet?" He groaned.

"Yes," Miles said, looking at his own compass.

"Do you seriously walk this much each time you want to go to this place?" Sonic said not believing the fox was doing this so often.

"Well, the beach is a bit farther than where I normally camp out but yes," Miles explained.

"Seriously!" Sonic was surprised. while complaining he let out, "Isn't there ANYONE you can depend on, on this island?"

Miles stopped in his tracks. He turned to Sonic with a very depressed look on his face. "No." was all he could say.

Sonic didn't know what to say after that. He instantly knew he put his foot in his mouth. Obviously, there was no one or he wouldn't have come to him, to begin with.

"Not even one?" Sonic accidentally said in a very depressing tone. Miles could only shake his head no. "Sorry." was all Sonic could say. Miles did not answer but they both continued to walk.

It got very quiet after that and Sonic frankly was nervous to even say anything else. The last thing he wanted to do was put his other foot in his mouth, so he stayed quiet.

After a few more minutes Sonic was able to see a small shack covered in shrubbery. Sonic was amazed by it but also surprised it was still standing seeing as it looked a bit run down. Miles went to the door and pushed it open.

"In here." He directed. Sonic walked over and was stunned to see what was inside. There were tools, machines, and metal equipment everywhere he could see. He didn't know what half of the items were but still, he was in a daze.

"Did you make all this?" Sonic said after coming out of his daze.

"Yeah. As I said. I like to make things." Miles said while giving a little giggle.

"You definitely weren't kidding." He said, taking another look around. "So can you make that reader you mentioned?"

"Give me a few minutes," Miles said gathering many tools and already-built machines.

The moment he began disassembling one of them Sonic said, "Woah, are you really ok with doing that? I mean you already finished that right."

"Yeah but I can always make another one. It's fine." Miles then continued his work.

Sonic stopped talking and watched the fox work but after a few minutes, he got bored and had a look around instead. There were blueprints, tools he didn't even know the name of, and other machines he wanted to try out. However the minute he even tried Miles actually raised his voice a bit and asked Sonic not to touch anything. Sonic was tempted but seeing as the fox actually spoke out he was nervous about what these things could do. So he backed away slowly.

Sonic decided to take a set and for the next while, only the sound of Miles' work was heard. Sonic then looked at his bandages and had to ask.

"So why do you bandage your tails?" Sonic asked.

Miles stopped working and turned to look at his tails. "I try to hide the fact I have an extra tail." He said.

"Because of what those idiots say?" Sonic asked.

"Yes. Everyone finds them weird and creepy so they call me a monster or a freak." Miles said with tears forming in his eyes.

"Well, they are bigger idiots than I thought. How could they not see how great you are? I mean you made all this. You helped a complete stranger. If anything they are the ones who deserved to be called monsters or freaks."

"R-really?" Miles said, getting misty-eyed and giant tears began to form.

"Really. Who cares if you have two tails, it's what's inside that counts, and Miles you have shown to be a great person and friend."

"F-friend," Miles said with tears falling from his eyes.

"We are friends right?" Sonic asked. Miles could only cry. However, unlike before these were tears of happiness. He has never had a friend before and no one had ever accepted him before. To him, this was a miracle. Sonic walked up to the fox and patted him on the shoulder and smiled. "From now on we are friends."

Miles jumped onto Sonic to give him a hug which Sonic found awkward and didn't know what to do. After a moment of processing the situation, Sonic asked, "OK. You good now?"

Miles released him and whipped the tears away

"Yeah. Sorry. Oh, I am almost finished with the reader. Just give me a couple more minutes." Miles said getting back to work.

"Good job," Sonic said happily.

"Not quite. Still not sure it will work but if I am doing this right it should." Miles said. After a minute Miles asked Sonic, "do you still have the emerald?"

"I was supposed to bring it?" Sonic said nervously. "Oops."

"It's fine. I forgot to tell you to grab it." Miles said. "Well, this is mostly done. Once I can scan the energy readings from the emerald we have I think I will be able to locate other emeralds that give similar energy readings."

"Miles you are awesome," Sonic said.

"Thanks." was all Miles could say since he was super happy by the compliment.

"Well just give me a moment," Sonic said, zipping through the door into the forest. Within a few minutes, Sonic was back with the emerald in tow. "Here you go."

"OK." Miles then began pushing buttons on his scanner while muttering, "If I do this…then this…oh got to adjust this…" Sonic couldn't really keep up but then Miles excitedly said, "There! I think it worked. Now we can use these energy readings..." He showed Sonic the device "...to hopefully locate other emeralds." Sonic had no clue what he was looking at, only that it apparently works. Miles looked back at it and adjusted a dial. "If this is right then there should be a similar energy reading that way." Miles pointed in a direction that excited Sonic.

"Great! let's go check it out." Sonic began to rush out.

"Wait for me!" Miles said while quickly getting ready while Sonic was running in place. After he was done they ran off to where they hoped the emerald would be.
