Eggman watched as Sonic began his attack at even faster speeds than his robot. He was worried but even with the increase in power his robot had the same power and was holding up against the powered-up Sonic.
Every connection made a heavy sound with a wave of air surrounding them. The battle was intense and Eggman and Miles could not look away. However, after a while Miles began to worry.
He noticed that the air and land around them began to blur or distort. With each blow, it got worse and Miles just knew this was going to be very bad if the fight did not stop soon.
"Sonic you need to finish him now!". He yelled but Sonic was so busy in his fight. He couldn't hear anything else.
Then suddenly Sonic was able to get a good clean hit on the robot's chest. The robot cracked a lot but it stayed standing. However, it was now buzzing and twitching like it was malfunctioning but it still tried to fight. Sonic realized it would be best to stop attacking and get out of there. He rushed to Miles, grabbed him, and ran to get a good distance away from the short-circuiting robot.
Even without Sonic there the robot continued to attack anything and everything. Even Eggman. Eggman knew it was time to stop him so he tried to turn off his robot but it didn't work. Instead, the robot began to twitch more, and eventually, a blinding light came from the chest and it exploded.
Sonic and Miles were far from the explosion but even so Sonic didn't expect it to be so powerful. Even at a distance, they could feel the shock wave it created. They both even fell over from the wave.
"Do you think that egg guy survived that?". Miles asked.
"Probably. He is a slippery one. We better go see if we can retrieve that stolen emerald." He said, grabbing Miles' arm again. Before Miles could say anything they sped off and within a few seconds, they were where the robot was. Instead of a robot, there was a deep crater with only a few mechanical bits to show he was even there.
"I guess the power was too much for it.". Miles said.
"Guess so." Sonic then looked in the crater, "do you see the emerald?"
They both looked into the crater but didn't see anything that even resembled the emerald. Then Miles looked up and yelled, "there it is!"
Sonic looked up and to his horror, Eggman had found it first.
"Too slow hedgehog. I better get going.". He said, beginning to fly off.
Sonic was so upset he punched the ground in anger. "No. I can't afford for him to even get one emerald."
Miles saw how upset Sonic was and went into deep thought. He was worried but he finally convinced himself it was worth the risk.
"Hey Sonic…". He said seriously.
"Yeah?". Sonic was confused
Miles took a deep breath and said, "...hold on." he grabbed onto Sonic's wrists and in that instant started rotating his tails. Then slowly they both started to lift off the ground.
"Are we flying? Are your tails making us fly?" Sonic said in complete shock.
"Yeah," Miles said quietly.
He was fully expecting Sonic to give some sort of negative reaction or scream and yell in fear but instead Sonic said, "That is so cool!" he said excitedly. "This is the awesomest thing I have ever seen!" He was genuinely happy and excited by this new discovery. "You think you can catch up to Eggman?"
Miles who was holding back tears of joy happily said, "that was the plan. Now hold on tight." In that instant Miles flew towards Eggman at a faster speed than his legs could ever go.
"Woohoo!" Sonic said having an absolute blast.
Meanwhile, Eggman had no clue on what was going on behind him. He was in utter shock when he heard Sonic's loud 'woohoo'. He turned around and freaked out at how close they were and by how Miles was flying. "What in the world!? What kind of monster are you!?" he asked.
"He is not a monster. This is Miles, my friend and the one who will help me stop you." Sonic answered. Miles then tossed Sonic onto the eggmobile, Sonic easily retrieved the chaos emerald and jumped out. Miles was there waiting for him and caught him. Eggman, not wanting to fight a losing battle, retreated while yelling, "I will get those emeralds."
"Yeah right!" Sonic said in a mocking tone.
Nothing else was said and Miles flew Sonic back to the island and back to the shore that had Sonic's boat. The minute they landed Sonic was still extremely excited by what just happened.
"That was the best! I had no idea you could do that!" Sonic said excitedly.
"I didn't tell you because I thought you would be scared of me if you found out." Mile explained.
"What? No, why? It is awesome that you can do that" Sonic assured him.
"I wish everyone else on the island thought that," Miles said in a sad tone.
"Well, they are losers who can't recognize a good thing. I mean this is the coolest thing ever. You are so cool." Sonic said.
"Thanks, Sonic but stop calling me cool. After all, you're way cooler than me." Miles said in doubt.
"I am cool but that doesn't mean you can't be too," Sonic said. "How about this you are the coolest friend I ever had." Miles was still not sure but he was extremely happy with being complimented and being called a friend again so he just took it without saying anything.
Just then people started coming out of the forest and they looked angry. They had weapons and were headed right for them. Miles was scared and Sonic saw this and got in front of him.
"Hey! What's going on?" Sonic asked the mob.
They stopped and an elderly person walked out and said, "that thing needs to be taken care of." he said, pointing to Miles who was really scared.
"What? Why?" Sonic said.
"That accursed creature has plagued us with misfortune since it was born. And now he brought a strange outsider that attacked our town and our home. No longer can we let it live." he said with the cheer of the crowd.
"That is not right. Miles has done nothing wrong. How can you just blame him for your troubles?" he argued. Miles was touched by Sonic standing up for him and was proud to have made a friend like him then the elder said something that even made him mad.
"For helping and associating with that monster you are just as bad. We can not let you live." Miles had enough. He got in front of Sonic and yelled in a voice Sonic never heard before.
"ENOUGH! He has nothing to do with this! Your only problem is with me and I will not stand for it. All my life I had been thought of as a monster and a freak but he helped me realize it is fine to be different and that being different can actually be a good thing." The elder tried to speak but Miles did not let him. "I am tired of being your punching bag and scapegoat for all the problems you caused yourself. I will no longer take the blame for things I never did or accept the harsh treatment you have shown. I will leave this island and leave each and every one of you behind and find happiness." Sonic was stunned by his speech and Miles was out of breath.
"And where do you expect to go? No place will accept a freak of nature." the elder questioned.
"He will come with me," Sonic said proudly.
The elder was not happy but to avoid getting anyone's hands dirty said, "fine. Get off this island immediately. If you are still here tomorrow you will not get another chance to leave." This was a clear-as-day threat to them. The elder waved everyone to retreat and many grumbled and complained but they all listened.
The moment they were gone Miles fell to his knees in relief. Sonic was surprised but was happy to see a smile on the fox's face.
"I can't believe I said that," Miles said happily.
"I am proud of you Miles," Sonic said, giving him a thumbs up.
"Me too. Oh uhm…" Miles began.
"What is it?" Sonic said in confusion.
"It is fine to call me Tails now," he said nervously.
"Are you sure? Didn't you hate the name?" Sonic questioned.
"I used to but now after everything that has happened, I believe these tails aren't so bad after all and that nickname isn't so bad either. Besides, if I'm honest I hate my real name more."
"Really? Why?" Sonic said wondering how he disliked his real name more than his nickname.
"Promise not to tell anyone?" Tails said.
"Promise," Sonic said.
"Well. My full name is Miles Prower," he said red with embarrassment.
"Miles prower? Like miles per hour." Sonic couldn't help but chuckle at the name which made Tails even redder.
"And that is why?" Miles said not amused by his friends chuckling.
"Sorry," Sonic said, trying to stop laughing. Once he calmed down he cheerfully said, "Alright then. From now on I will call you Tails."
Tails smiled. He then looked over at the boat and said, "well we don't have much time to pack and get going so we better get ready and set sail." Tails said somewhat excitedly. Sonic on the other hand was not.
"Right. Set sail." He said sarcastically.
"What's wrong?" Tails asked, noticing Sonic's deflated attitude.
"Nothing. Just don't like sea travel." Sonic said with a shrug.
"Then why were you in a boat? Tails asked.
"No other transportation. My home was only able to provide me with this." He explained.
Tails thought about it then he suddenly asked, "well what about air travel?"
"I guess that would be better. What? Do you have a plane?" He said, mainly as a joke.
"Yes." Tails said bluntly.
Sonic was stunned. He was not expecting Tails to actually have a plane. "Really?"
"Yep. I always dreamed of leaving this island someday so I built it. I never had the courage to actually leave though. Just small test runs around the island." Tails explained.
"Well then…" Sonic quickly packed up all the essentials as well as the basket he got from home, which he now leaves the emeralds in. "...let go."
To make the journey faster, Tails flew beside Sonic who was able to get much faster. Not his top speed but it was definitely faster. In no time they were going up a hill that led to a plateau. At the edge was a small building. They went up to it and inside, much to Sonic's shock was a bi-plane.
"WOW!"' Sonic said in amazement. "You built this?"
"Yep. Took a while but I did and I must say it is my best work." Tails said looking very proud of himself.
"I can agree," Sonic said still in aw. "And it looks new."
"I take good care of it. Never knew when I would actually use it to leave and not just around the island." Tails said, chuckling to himself.
"Well let's get going," Sonic said. He jumped up to the wing and planted himself in the second set. "Hey. Why are there two sets?"
Tails got beat red. "I made it that way in case I actually made a friend that would come with me." He was so embarrassed he hid his face. Sonic was surprised but was happy that Tails' hopefully thinking came true.
"Alright well get your tails up here and let's go." Sonic was extremely impatient.
"Right." Tails said quickly recovering from his embarrassment.
Before leaving he grabbed many tools that were laying around and put them in a storage compartment. He then flew up to the pilot's seat and began preparations to take off. In no time at all the propeller began to spin and they began to move. They slowly left the building and then slowly picked up speed. Sonic had never actually been on a plane before and was a little nervous.
"This thing will fly right." He said nervously.
"Trust me." Tails said full of confidence. Sonic instantly calmed down as they got to maximum speed and the plane started lifting off the ground. "Awesome," Sonic said as he noticed the ground getting further away from them. Then in no time, they were in the air flying.
Tails took a lap around the island to prove he was leaving and when he did Sonic saw his boat. In his head, he said, "thanks for the help but…" then out loud he excitedly said while jumping onto a wing, "...now the adventure really begins."
"H-hey." Tails said in shock. "Sonic, don't do that. It's dangerous."
"Yeah yeah. Sorry." Sonic said, getting back into his seat for a relaxing flight.
Meanwhile, on a floating island, someone was guarding a sacred relic but he suddenly got up and said angrily, "are they coming here now?"
